Ed,

You are definitely correct that today's items are far superior to what was done
the line five decades ago. Still, I have seen modeler do marvelous work with
old AF freight cars, and I still enjoy reworking an AF gon or a box car into
something more prototypical. It is astounding what can be accomplished if one
seeks, for example, a car closer to the X-29 or an ARA car very similar to the
PRR X-29. Yes, one can purchase a brass model from Bill Lane. Or one could.
Brass is a bit too pricey for me in the current economy and will probably be
off limits financially when I retire in the next year or two.

So now and then a rework of old AF stock is not a bad way to spend my time. I
believe I could rework an old AF steamer if I could obtain the proper wheels
and motor to do the job. Just speculation though, never tried it.

One interesting fact--and a development I never expected to see--is the sudden
almost overnight suspension and possibly disappearance of quality stuff. I
believe Don Thompson just remarked that the 2-8-0 might not be offered again.
When they're gone, they will indeed be gone. That has happened to PRS kits. I
hope SHS, SSA, and others find a producer in China or even one here in the US
if it can be accomplished. So the temporary--I hope--suspension of producing
quality items will not be permanent. Things were really going well for a few
years. Meanwhile, perhaps so redos of old stuff isn't such a bad idea.

Tom
