Dick it will be interesting to see how long the 'rest' of the gearboxes
will last...my RSD seems to be doing okay also. I did tear into my RS-3
just before Christmas. I apparently had poked out some window glass.
So I took the opportunity to install a new Tusanami decoder, and new LED
lights. She also is back in operation doing just fine with the larger
motor/flywheel and the NorthYard trucks.
When you compare the brass RS's to the plastic version there is not that
much difference except in the cab's roof profile plus the usual thicker
plastic parts. What is missing on the brass unit (and plastic) is the
chain and related components to what I believe is the hand brake
mechanism located under the cab. If you compare the Alco models to the
Overland RS-11 series you will see what I'm talking about.
While I was working updating equipment I also undated a decoder in my
gas electric and again installed a surface mounted LED drilled into a MV
lens to replace the usual headlite bulb. What I haven't figured out is
how to hold the MV lens while you trying to drill into it. I then took
the old Digitrax 120 decoder from the gas electric and installed it into
the fuel tender of my gas turbine. It will only be used to control the
backup light--I'll finish that tonite.
I still have three brass engines that need some kind of servicing and/or
updating. Next will be a Overland FA. I have two A units that have run
as a pair for years. I serviced one a couple of years ago and they
haven't worked as a team since (something about leaving well enough
alone! comes to mind). I think I've tightened up the gearboxes a little
too much. At that time I'll probably update the decoder in those units
also--I think only one has sound.
