I pulled my FA's out of a roundhouse stall last night. One ran
intermittently and the other wouldn't budge for awhile. I tore into the
one that ran first. It has a Digitrax 163 decoder plus a Soundtraxx
sound only unit. I cleaned the wheels a little and put some Aero Lube
on the bolster screws. That helped considerably but I still wouldn't
consider it a great runner. I might have to resort to additional wheel
wipers. These units only have 4 wheel pickup.

The second unit finally started to move with a little push. I am
hearing a little click-click sound. Perhaps like the drive shaft hitting
a out of place wire. So I removed the shell. I twisted the motor shaft
and there is a hang-up in the drive line--enough to where the rubber
tubing connecting the motor to the transfer gearbox would slip. I
stopped there for the night, but each of those units have five seperate
gear boxes--one on each axle and the main one that delivers power under
the floor. I recall that the SD-40's had issues with a gear in that
main transfer box, so that will be my emphasis tonite. I've ordered a
set of the former Hobby Town universals should I need them, since the
originals have been problematic for a long time. I think I have some
NWSL parts around also. So I'll be up to my S scale knees with work
before the year ends. I saw no sign of any distortion of the zamac
casting, but, of course, that could also be causing the problem should
that be happening even in a small way. Stay tuned!
