This shade tree diesel mechanic dropped the trucks and main gearbox last
night. I worked on the trucks first. I installed some phosphor bronze
wipers on one truck and when checking the axle mounted gearboxes found
them working just fine. The other truck already had a stainless steel
looking wheel wiper (factory) installed. This set of axle mounted
gearboxes didn't run as smooth. Some of that might be due to the wider
wiper causing a slight amount of drag. I also went in and reamed the
axle holes a bit. It's improved but still not as good as the other truck.

I twisted the flywheel (custom made by Jack Troxell many years ago) and
found the same hitch as before. This either means the motor or the
transfer gear box is the problem. After dropping the gear box and
cracking it open I see three gears, a small nylon one on top followed by
two larger brass ones. Sure enough the smallish plastic guy is split.

So tonite I'll be searching my reserve stash of parts to see if I have a
replacement. I suppose replacing the whole box with one from NWSL is a
possibility or perhaps they have a replacement gear available. This has
become a pain in the butt, however it can be dealt with!
