Ed,  I can't see any way of determining if there's any distortion.  If 
you look at the basic shape of the boxes they resemble a walnut--not 
much is flat or straight.  I did run a fine file through the axle 
bearing area, but that really wasn't the problem from what I can tell.  
If there's any crimping it must be in the top shaft that runs between 
the two boxes.  I did notice some 'humping' of the two boxes when you 
twist the main center shaft--sort of like a Chinese dragon festival 
without the fireworks !  I was trying not to remove those fragile 
universal couplings on one end and the press fit brass coupling on the 
other.

I plan to fix the main gearbox first then go into the truck again as I 
start the reassembly process.
