My friendly local hobby-shop owner feels that the available S-scale turnouts 
are unreliable.

Hi Dave,
I am not sure just what you mean by the parts being bigger for S scale 
turnouts. I am using the same code rail in S as I did in HO in the early 80s. 
Code 100 and code 70. The components are the same size just guaged wider than 
HO. 

With that said I have learned from pictures on this group that you can take a 
code 100 Shinohara (SP) in HO guage and cut it down the middle to widen it to S 
Scale. Just a great idea. 

I have handlaid all my track but I do plan to play with that idea. I think it 
is pretty cool.
