I don't know the maximum distance but the SP freight house here used heavy
steel plates to span from the dock to the boxcar doors. I'd guess the gap was
about 2 feet or less, I can't recall ever walking thru it as a kid so it must
have narrow enough to keep me out of there as I roamed all over the yard
