Peter,  I have a feeling that the model's distance might be different 
than the prototype.  Banta makes a clearance gauge that  is very 
helpful.  The real problem occurs when you have some curvature in the 
track but not the platform.

In my hometown, some of the grain elevators had little drop down walking 
platforms so workers could enter the cars.  These platforms would be 
raised when the car was made ready for moving.  I would guess the 
clearance would be really tight.  Locally I once photographed the 
unloading of web paper rolls.  After the car was positioned and door 
opened, a forklift would drop a steel plate that had a chain attached.  
One of the forks held the loop of chain.  After the bridge was made the 
forklift could then enter the car--remember to position the blue flags!  
Actually I'm not certain the blue flag was used for non-railroad employees.
