Peter, There is usually a gap between the car and platform. You should be
able to find it were Stan said or at the PRRT&HS page. When a car was right
up to a platform it was either dedicated equipment, used only by that
shipper or an older siding originally set up for smaller equipment. There would
be
a "close clearance" sign at the pinch point to warn trainmen of the
situation. Hope this helps

Although not directly related to S-scale, for those of you who are/were
real railroaders and for those of you who know, what would be the
maximum distance between the edge of a loading ramp/platform of an
industrial building and the edge of a boxcar door?
I have seen photos of where the boxcar is right up next to the
unloading/loading platform, and I have seen photos where a wooden board
was used to span the gap.
I am trying to determine how to place my structure and its distance from
the track.
Thank you for any info,
- Peter.
