Nothin' to apologise for... and I don't really have a problem with 'close
enough', as long as it truly is "close." In the case of certain prototypes
such as the PRR round roof box and SAL round roof box... they aren't close
enough for me.

In the case of the SHS rebuilt box cars... my four are painted as SAL cars.
BUT... the ends are wrong - SAL's rebuilts did NOT have ribbed ends. And I'm
facint MAJOR surgery and more $$$ to correct them. This is why I believe FLAT
PANEL kits would be the way to go in many cases since the parts would be easily
changable, even after assembly depending on the method used for assembly. I
believe it would even be possible for the individual panels could be offered
pre/factory painted. Someone was selling pre-painted, metal box car SIDES on
ebay a year or so back... I bought one in S painted for SAL... and all I need
is a good core kit to put it on, and the addition of the ends, roof, frame,
etc, and I'll have me another great-looking model. But this way, I get to pick
and choose the type of each one of those details as I build the model... and,
I'm sure, it will be much less work to assemble, even with what few parts
modifications may be needed to get the panels and other parts to fit correctly,
than having to cut and rebuild a RTR model. MODULAR KITS... they've been
talked about for years! They may not be feasible for every type prototype car,
but surely it would work, at least, for box cars.

You got me there and I apologize. You see the problem we all see. It takes
more than one mold to make a car prototipical. You make the original and then
you have all of the prototipical parts that need molds made for. That is the
main reason for close enough. You have to add the partsfor each different
railroad in the mix. You got the money . Oh I'm waiting on the sergent coupler,
I'm Drulling right now.
  thanks,
  aLAN

If the "he" in your comment is a reference to me, then you just lost your
bet... because all I have is SHS models... nothing else. An SW-1, FOUR rebuilt
boxcars, two flat cars, two piggyback trailers and two cabooses... NONE of
which are dead ringers for the prototype they are painted to represent.
Prototypical accuracy and scale accuracy are very close relatives in my book.

I bet he does not even have 1 s-helper car. My s-helper caboose has all of
the detail he wants except the coupler. It still is high rail for now. He needs
to get the sergent coupler, but is it available in "S" I doubt it . Then He can
be called a true Scale modeler.
  I had to say that.
