I've been working on my version of the Showcase Miniatures "sunkist shed". The structure is built, painted, weathered, and most of the details have been added.
Last night (Friday) I finalized installation of SMD LEDs to light up the building. I used SMD resistors for the first time (I have been using SMD LEDs for a while now). When I first started using the SMD parts, I wasn't sure how to go about soldering magnet wires to those tiny parts, but it is really no big deal. I use the standard Radio Shack 30W soldering iron. The key is to use something that holds the tiny part in place while you solder. The parts are so light that just touching them with the soldering iron will make them stick to the solder on the iron! I tried using double-sided tape, but its glue isn't strong enough. About a month ago I was in the glue/ducktape section of Lowes and found this silly-putty like material. You rub it to heat-activate it. It is intended for hanging up small pictures on the wall without having to drill or nail holes into the wall. Great for apartment dwellers. Well, it works great for soldering SMD components, too! Just press the part into the material, and solder away (actually, all you need is a quick touch of the solder and the iron). I plan to partially decorate the interior of the structure. To that end, on Thursday I placed an order for some stuff from Model Tech Studios (http://mts.inline.net/merchant.ihtml?id=19&step=2). This company has been quietly adding more and more S-scale details, small structures, one-evening projects, etc. I ordered about four things to go in and around the structure. I will report back when I get their stuff to see if it was worth the money. Enjoy, - Peter.
