  I don't think it ever has, the industry just wants us to think that so we 
will spend more. A successful model railroad is a matter of experience, skill, 
artistic ability, knowledge of the prototype, lots of time,some suitable space, 
dedication, and more experience.
  While we're talking about pricing I gotta mention the DPH modern boxcars, I'm 
a value oriented buyer and they are the best product I've bought in the last 
few years. $44.95 RTR and state of the art, I bought one of every model and 
road number. Someone was saying they don't mind spending $60 -80 for a kit but 
I do, give me more of the $44.95 RTR cars and the what scale to model debate
