This (below) sounds like we're revisiting the idea of a CANNON-like line of

I like your thought process.  3D printing might just be the ticket to 
getting this scale up to speed.  Being a diesel guy myself, I would be 
really interested in a model such as a GP38-2.  That way a frame / 
chassis structure could be produced and used for an entire line of 
locomotives.  The GP38, GP38-2, GP39, GP39-2, GP39X, GP49, GP59, GP40, 
GP40-2, GP50, GP60 all used the same frame and all had the same length 
of 56' 2" and all had truck center spacing of 34' 0".  One frame could 
be used for all 11 models.
