Probably, a shapeways TT scale freight car body costs about $20 and an S
scale car would have a lot more volume. however if one wanted a fleet of cars
the $200 might be worth it to use as a master for casting your own from resin.
It depends on how good one is at creating 3D parts in a computer versus
creating them the old way on the workbench. Someone who knows the software
could probably do it faster in the computer but someone like me could do it
faster by hand.
Shapeways parts don't come out smooth enough to cast from unless they have
greatly improved them in the last few months, my TT scale shapeways cars have
a gritty texture due to the way they are printed. Someone that knows how to use
the software could always experiment by drawing up a set of S scale 57 foot
mechanical reefer parts and seeing how they printed? ....DaveBranum
