I'm going to float a guess that the parts for a 50 ft boxcar created as a "flat
kit" by Shapeways (3D printing company) would be over $200. That raises a
couple of questions, even if Michael O. is willing to donate his CAD time
(which is a considerable number of hours).
1. Would you pay $200 for a flat kit?
2. Would you expect all the detail parts to come with it?
3. Is someone going to cast this as a commercial venture?
It might be more feasible to work out some kind of work split with an
established vendor like Jim King. Maybe Jim can comment on what it would look
like for him if he got CAD drawings for free. Maybe Michael O. could use
Shapeways to verify that the drawings produced a buildable car, and Jim or
someone could take it from there.
BTW, Shapeways has a "store" so that if they have produced parts once, others
can order direct from them.
