Most of all I make sure the track works well first, especially turnouts. I
always test track with one particular fussy car or one of the Pacifics which is
temperamental for this. If there is the slightest problem, this car or loco
will show it up. Once the track is fixed, I know that every thing else will
roll. I keep these two pieces of equipment in their testy state just for that
reason. Fixing them to roll like everything else would be an idea but I like
having something to benchmark with.
I use Poly S Railroad Tie brown. This is one of the specs of the S Scale
Workshop. I thin it 50% using Windex. I hand brush it on after the track has
been mounted on the cork roadbed and clean the rail head immediately afterward.
I attach the track using Lepage's Water Based contact cement. I don't really
weather the ties or distress them (not that you can distress plastic ties all
that easily) as I find that by the time I add ballast, grease spills etc. it
really doesn't matter.
It could be that the Acrylic Matt Medium that I use for the ballast seals
everything in well as I have not had any problems with the paint on that
slippery plastic.
After the scenery is done, the last thing I do is paint the sides of the rails
and the tie plates Floquil Rail Brown, another group spec. This too is by
hand, usually a number 0 or smaller brush. It goes quickly and there is no
worries about overspray. Once again I clean the rail head immediately. I use
a track cleaning eraser. If you wait a day or two, it is harder to do.
One day I will take the time to add a very light rust wash to the sides of the
rail to get that look.
I hope this helps.
cheers,
Andy Malette
