Bill,
I make custom joiners at rail transitions.  I've made both insulated and 
soldered transitions with joiners.  My rail joints aren't as good looking as 
some (very smooth without kinks, though).  Another compromise.

I ordered a bag of the Grandt line tie plates way back when and they are too 
wide.  Otherwise I might have ordered about 10,000 of them (or whatever) and 
installed them everywhere.
