I've tried several different ways to join different sizes of rails and I
see where Bill solders his joints. I've done that using the railjoiner
of the largest size, sometimes with a bit of brass shim under the
smaller size. This has worked out fairly well. Also, in a couple of
spots early on I've just filed away the larger rail to match the
smaller. That also works out better than one would think. In most of
my situations I'm combining #126 with #100. In one situation I'm going
from #126 to #70.
However, I've toyed with the idea of cutting both the rails at a 45
angle and then soldering to maintain both the height and the matching
of the head. Has anybody tried that?

Usually, I will extend the plates for about 6 ties beyond the
joint. I usually also solder these joints to make sure the tops of
the rails remain aligned.
Have fun!
