Hi bob, The way I've found to be easiest is to take a couple short pieces
of the two rail sizes and join them with a rail joiner then set them upside
down on an anvil like surface and hit the bottom of the joiner with a small
hammer till it steps enough to align the tops of the rails. Then slip it off
and install it on the layout rails. Once in place solder in the stepped joint
locks everything up nice and secure. A little filing to clean it up and it's
