    Hi Bill, They only do it that way because they have to. when they have the 
choice they prefer centrally supplied power. The further away from the power 
supply the more likely a railroad will use loco stored energy than power plant 
supplied energy and model railroads don't go very far from the wall plug. 
   Now if a radio system was sending commands to a live steam loco or to a 
diesel electric powered loco I'd be a lot more interested in using
