    Hi Pieter, I'd suggest trying dead frogs first  as most locos have no 
problem with them so they might never need to be wired up. 
 My problem with using battery power is the locos hafta carry batteries which 
take away room that could be used for bigger speakers or more spread out 
wiring. I find there's already too much in most loco by the time one  adds a 
decoder and speaker and the wiring so adding batteries is the last thing I'd 
want to do. 
 Our nickle silver track gives us a power distributing system much like most 
advanced real trains use, you won't find batteries on bullet trains or busy 
commuter lines but you find lots of wiring.
  I guess as the battery technology advances at some point S scale garden 
railroading might be attractive but I think I'd really rather build my track 
and scenery in a controlled environment just so it wouldn't deteriorate so 
fast....DaveBranum
