OK, I tried to do something similar: spkg-install is defining DARWIN64,
which is either "-m64" or "". It is exported, and subsequently used by the
Makefiles of meataxe and of David Green's programs.
I updated the spkg at
http://sage.math.washington.edu/home/SimonKing/Cohomology/p_group_cohomology-1.1.spkg
which is preliminary, since it does not yet test for parallel build.
But it tries to deal with the 64 bit issue. John, can you please try
again, with parallel build disabled? And could you please verify whether
on the 64 bit machine the option "-m64" is really used?
