IMHO, it would be good if we could remove the small amount of python that
was in this package, we could start building this as soon as Fortran is
built. This would allow us to start building ATLAS much earlier (before
building Python).
We really should update ATLAS too.
I do wonder if such a large change is appropriate without updating ATLAS.
It will make an update even more difficult.
Given ATLAS takes longer than any other package to build on many systems,
getting it building early, which means avoiding Python, would seem a good
idea IMHO.
