Comment(by SimonKing):

 Hooray! When I reverted libsingular rings using the old coercion model and
 confined the changes to matrices and categories, I only get few doctest
 errors:
 {{{
 sage -t  devel/sage-main/sage/matrix/matrix2.pyx # 5 doctests failed
 sage -t  devel/sage-main/sage/rings/finite_rings/integer_mod_ring.py # 3
 doctests failed
 sage -t  devel/sage-main/sage/rings/ring.pyx # 2 doctests failed
 sage -t  devel/sage-main/sage/rings/morphism.pyx # 4 doctests failed
 sage -t  devel/sage-main/sage/categories/cartesian_product.py # 1 doctests
 failed
 sage -t  devel/sage-main/sage/categories/modules_with_basis.py # 1
 doctests failed
 }}}
 That seems manageable.
