Thanks Editor. All I ever seem to obtain when I try to stimulate conversation is an editorial wet blanket. I take no blame for this sites lapses into suspended animation - I do my bit, be it Modi or Library books, to generate conversations. But our boundaries have been set too close and even though many others have said so, we continue to stifle free expression and thought.
I know I give the impression of being a sh*t-stirrer, and I must admit I do enjoy creating ripples of logic that cause the theist boat occasionally to rock. But there's more to it than that. I want our youth, wherever they might be, to develop minds that question, analyse and formulate answers. That's why the thought of a Club Library only populated with Enid Blyton and Biblical type books worries me a lot. And that's why I'm throwing in a few books of Science. I hope others will contribute with books for children that elucidate Chemistry, Physics and Biology in terms of real life (not exams). When they read things on this site like "God created clean air" I hope they will ask the question: "Was the air really that clean when Earth first came to be?" They will then go on to discover that our atmosphere has always and will always be in a state of flux. They might then go on to ask "If HE did create clean air , surely he created plastic bags and pollute air too?" Their beautiful unpolluted minds will then wonder at how we are to allocate only certain aspects of creation to creation..... No, Editor, my choice of book is not bait but necessity in the face of aggressive creationism, as is often seen on this site. The freeing of a child's mind is indeed a great gift. And the authors you have chosen will I hope sit proudly next to mine (you're donating too, aren't you?) but I shan't be reading one of the authors you mentioned. Not after I read his speech to the Catholic Society of Exorcists (!!!!) in Rome. I have met these charlatans before. They need to be put in gaol for exploiting the weaknesses of mentally ill people and their families on a grand scale in India, Brazil, and other places. If they tried their nonsense with schizophrenia etc in the UK or Canada or the US etc etc, they'd be doing time. More submissions please? Hope I was polite with that one. Phew! Saligao-Net is dependent for its posts on all its members. That includes you. So if you take a dig at inactivity and obituaries, then it means we are all (including you) are not doing enough. Please step on the gas! Just btw, Saligao-Net is also active on Facebook. I guess younger, Facebook-prone members find that a more convenient place to cyber-meetup. Are you there? Any books are food for thought. But four books are far from sufficient to build a library. And a priority before the SI (apart from gaining more members), is to get an active library going. Agreed, this is a tough job. As for your offer (bait?) of Dawkins and Hitchens, I must concede I'm not great fan of them. They come across as teenagers who have just discovered the impact of their disbelief. A Pope Francis, a Leonard Boff, a Tissa Balasuriya or even a Fidel and Frei Betto in discussion, do more for me to raise questions about the role of religion and society. Agreed, this is a matter of personal taste. Thought I'd ignite things a bit by seeking suggestions for books I can donate to the Club Library. I shall be in town shortly and have 4 books that I think young village minds (and some elderly ones too) will gain much reward by studying. They are by Dawkins and Hitchens, and I am sure will be displayed in places of great prominence and received with much gratitude. Any other suggestions? Please keep it polite. -- -- Saligao-Net is at http://groups.google.com/group/saligao-net To post to this group, send email to [email protected] To unsubscribe email [email protected] --- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Saligao-Net" group.
