Hi Everyone
I think we need to start focusing on how to get the Saligao Institute library
functioning again. Agreed!

We could get a group of volunteers to take turns to open the institute doors
and the library once or twice a week was done then every Saturday, by people
like Mr. Nolasco, Ms. Eva, Mrs. Blanche & the others. (cant remember, memory
loss again) and keep a record of books that are borrowed/returned . I am keen
to get the children's library started again even if very few children avail of
the opportunity to read the books there. It's worthwhile encouraging even those
few and i know some SI members will agree with me and volunteer to help as they
did in the past. I am sure they will.
Besides the children's library the teenagers and adults too need to develop the
reading habit and have access to books.
For all this to materialise first a librarian should be paid to catalogue the
books already there in the library, Oh the library still exists? one of the
mails questioned that so I am now confused. establish a system and train us to
enter new books that are donated in the future.
The more books the better, the more choice the more opportunites for the young
to "develop minds that question, analyse and formulate answers" as Dilip said.
The SI would then become a good place to debate on writers and books, "a matter
of personal taste " as Frederick rightly says.
Not an impossible dream,is it? No it isnt! after all, the Library at the
Saligao Institute was a fact once upon a time.
Warm regards
Yvonne

Hi Dilip,

Just a few suggestions. Hope you find these as polite as your mail...

Saligao-Net is dependent for its posts on all its members. That includes you.
So if you take a dig at inactivity and obituaries, then it means we are all
(including you) are not doing enough. Please step on the gas!

Just btw, Saligao-Net is also active on Facebook. I guess younger,
Facebook-prone members find that a more convenient place to cyber-meetup. Are
you there?

Any books are food for thought. But four books are far from sufficient to build
a library. And a priority before the SI (apart from gaining more members), is
to get an active library going. Agreed, this is a tough job.

As for your offer (bait?) of Dawkins and Hitchens, I must concede I'm not great
fan of them. They come across as teenagers who have just discovered the impact
of their disbelief. A Pope Francis, a Leonard Boff, a Tissa Balasuriya or even
a Fidel and Frei Betto in discussion, do more for me to raise questions about
the role of religion and society. Agreed, this is a matter of personal taste. FN

I see Saligaonet has lapsed into suspended animation once more, pending the
next obituary. Thought I'd ignite things a bit by seeking suggestions for books
I can donate to the Club Library. I shall be in town shortly and have 4 books
that I think young village minds (and some elderly ones too) will gain much
reward by studying. They are by Dawkins and Hitchens, and I am sure will be
displayed in places of great prominence and received with much gratitude.

Any other suggestions? Please keep it polite.
