Dear FriendsSome vested interest has created a sort of phobia that congress is
for catholic people and BJP is for the hindus. In the begining lots of people
from across the border came to tell people that Gujerat is burning because they
know we goans will be carried away by the words that flow from sacred mouth. I
went on the net to really find out about Gujerat and found that what was said
was not even half way true. There are villages in gujerat that looks like
cities .Even Delhi may lack what I saw. Computers in the school, every house in
a particular village had toilets . Schools were clean and internet facilities
in the village etc etc some of the villages were green with fields showing
bumper crops. What we see in Goa is people build houses in fields and others
just sit at the tinto and criticise. Our mouths are always open. we never
investigate and that is why some people fool us with stories that are not true.

All I ever seem to achieve when I attempt to generate intelligent conversation
is to awaken the arch-creationists and their editor-in-chief.

Modi's clean-up campaign we hope will help the village. But his election was
not to be applauded.

Were he to be successful in his endeavour to improve infrastructure and control
corruption, the village will benefit directly... but we were directed to take
that conversation elsewhere. How petty!

I take no blame for the suspended animation of the site; as many have said, we
need to broaden the boundaries of conversation.

And when we publish loudly made statements that irritate every fibre of logical
thinking such as 'God gave us clean air', our arch-creationists and their very
silent editor should expect a little feedback. Here it is:

1. when earth was first formed its atmosphere was not conducive to life. Do our
children know this? Do they know just how 'polluted' the atmosphere was when
single-cell organisms first appeared?

2. Creationists must surely believe God created pollution too...plastic bags,
toxic fumes and all. Or is there some arbitary allocation process at work that
only creationists understand? Are our children thought to question things in
these ways or do we think
a Enid Blyton and book of prayer library will suffice?

No dear editor. My selection of books is not bait but necessity. It is loudly
proclaimed creationist noises that make it important to broaden the boundaries
of this group, and to introduce books of science into the library which would
otherwise only consist
of Enid Blyton and a couple of bibles.

And having just read Pope Francis' speech to Catholic exorcists - yes,
exorcists- in Rome, I personally wont waste my time reading him any more, even
though he was recommended by our controller. Catholic exorcists still 'treat'
schizophrenia in Goa and Brazil
by exorcising spirits. They'd be gaoled if they tried those nasty tricks in
secular scientific societies nowadays.

More balance and a less prescriptive editorship, please.

Hi Dilip,

Just a few suggestions. Hope you find these as polite as your mail...

Saligao-Net is dependent for its posts on all its members. That includes you.
So if you take a dig at inactivity and obituaries, then it means we are all
(including you) are not doing enough. Please step on the gas!

Just btw, Saligao-Net is also active on Facebook. I guess younger,
Facebook-prone members find that a more convenient place to cyber-meetup. Are
you there?

Any books are food for thought. But four books are far from sufficient to build
a library. And a priority before the SI (apart from gaining more members), is
to get an active library going. Agreed, this is a tough job.

As for your offer (bait?) of Dawkins and Hitchens, I must concede I'm not great
fan of them. They come across as teenagers who have just discovered the impact
of their disbelief. A Pope Francis, a Leonard Boff, a Tissa Balasuriya or even
a Fidel and Frei Betto
in discussion, do more for me to raise questions about the role of religion
and society. Agreed, this is a matter of personal taste. FN

I see Saligaonet has lapsed into suspended animation once more, pending the
next obituary. Thought I'd ignite things a bit by seeking suggestions for books
I can donate to the Club Library. I shall be in town shortly and have 4 books
that I think
young village minds (and some elderly ones too) will gain much reward by
studying. They are by Dawkins and Hitchens, and I am sure will be displayed in
places of great prominence and received with much gratitude.

Any other suggestions? Please keep it polite.
