think about it this way:
when "how it feels.." first came out, it debuted at something like #156
on billboard.. it even scored #8 on the heatseekers chart.. i think
they even sold around 10,000 copies in that first week.. but that was
basically it.. all of the fans that had waited so long to get that
little gem finally had it.. but that had to be the peak of sales..
there was even a considerable marketing push, with lots of press.. i
digress..
the point is that sunny day or any other emo band will never be
mainstream.. fugazi has labels after them all of the time because they
sell a TON of records.. they've been together for over 10 years and
have a huge fanbase.. but, even if they were to sign with a major
label, they still wouldn't be "mainstream".. the kids just wouldn't dig
it without some 13 year-old girl in tight pants singing about her
"baby"..
