This message is attacking an IDEA, not any PERSON....
I think the excuse that SDRE music is 'too intelligent' for the masses is
more elitist hogwash, i.e. we are the chosen ones with the great
intelligence and are somehow special or set apart from the masses because
we like SDRE. Of course it's natural to want to believe htis because it
compliments yourself at the same time as explaining why SDRE isn't
mainstream. Plus it plays to your own personal fantasies. Well I know a
lot of people who wouldn't be put on the bright side of the SDRE-l
IQ-ometer who nonetheless like SDRE, so the answer may be a bit more
obvious than this ego-masturbatory theory.
i.e. - Diary/LP2 - too loud/confusing for mainstream music (meaning of
course, the Pop charts, which are basically what define mainstream, given
Limp Bizkit is/was leading album sales per week ahead of Backstreet Boys
last I checked)
HIFTBSO - more accessible but nothign to make it stand out in particular
to the mainstream (which is also going through a boy-band phase) - a well
done album with good lyrics again but as far as cross-genre pollination it
also isn't satisfying any societal yearnings. It COULD have been a
mainstream album, but a niche mainstream - alternative is what it woudl be
grouped under, and while there are alternative stations, they themselves
are not as large as the Pop Charts. Plus there are tons of albums put out
each year that COULD have been mainstream albums, by many bands, but
don't. It's an elusive concept, dictated by record companies and
starbucks managers, I don't know, but HIFTBSO just didn't punch through.
So that's my possible theory. A bit painfully obvious. I remember when I
was a kid and into indie and I thought it was the greatest thing and that
I was 'special' because I could UNDERSTAND so much more than the masses -
now I look back and see how painfully bad a lot of the music I listened to
was. Kids, if you're special or intelligent, it's not because of the
music you listen to, and your intellect does not choose your music types.
......besides, do you really want the geek who sits at the front of the
class by the teacher's desk in your math class and who pulls off Straight
A's every report card to have a SDRE tape next to his pocket protecter?
