I use the KRC2 as you describe (though I've got a highly modified bandmap
and use it for driving my microwave rover station) .. I use the BCD output
to drive my LO synthesizer and the discrete outputs to throw relays and
stuff, works fine for me

Well .. I just spent the weekend integrating a K3 with a set of
transverters for 144/222/432MHz ..

Assuming you have the KIO3 and the KXV3, it's a piece of cake. You'll have
to bust open your transverter to determine whether it's been configured for
split or combined IF and what drive level it's expecting (your description
of the connectors tells me it can be configured either way). If it's split
you'll need the KXV3, if not you can likely use the HF output connector
(possibly with a switched attenuator for TX). PTT can be had on the ACC
connector if you're using 0dBm IF levels, else it can be taken from the
rear panel PTT OUT jack. If you need to do more complicated things, there
are a few other handy open-collector outputs on ACC (like DIGOUT0 and 1)
that can come to the rescue ..

[Elecraft] TX INH missing?

[John D'Ausilio]

It's the night before the contest and I'm working out the last of the
details for my new rover low-band configuration using the K3, and I was
about to test the behavior of the TX INHIBIT signal on pin7 (hoping that it
inhibits TX while providing normal external PTT). Anyway, I go into the
config menu and scroll to the TX ones, and there's no TX INH in my menu!
I've recently updated to current firmware, but it's a relatively old K3
(#655 I believe). Could anyone shed light as to where I might find TX INH
in my menus?

[Elecraft] k3 band up/down skips transverter band

[John D'Ausilio]

I'm getting ready to go out roving for the first time with a K3 as the IF
radio for my low bands (6-432). I've programmed in transverter bands 1-3,
but for some reason the rig skips 144 and goes to 222 on band up (and
similarly skips 144 and goes to 50 on the way back down). If I direct freq
enter a 144MHz frequency it correctly selects xv1, it just won't go there
with the band up/down.

Any ideas?

"sealed calcium" sounds like a marketing term to me ;)

I suspect they're claiming the plates are calcium/lead alloy, which
does make for a longer life battery than e.g. antimony/lead or
tin/lead .. also claims to reduce water loss

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the KRC2 .. red-headed stepchild of
the Elecraft line ;)

I use a KRC2 with a K2 to switch 6 microwave bands in the Jitney ..
903 through 10G. The radio displays the correct frequency with the GHz
lopped off. I reprogrammed the KRC2 (no programming required, just run
a commandline utility) such that it turned on 2 source and 2 sink pins
per band, with another pair of source and sink which turns on for any
microwave band. The outputs of the KRC2 can do a few hundred
milliamps, but the total package power is probably limited to under an
amp (e.g. use drivers for stuff that uses more than a few 10s of mA).
I drive two 1P6T relays plus some logic and a bunch of DEMI relay
boards.

It's not out-of-the-box, but it's been very reliable .. you'll likely
need to be able to do simple "glue" circuitry, diode or gates,
drivers, etc to make a complete solution

I use a pair of Jacobs Accuvolts .. and they're pretty noisy on 6M
(the lowest frequency in the rover). One of them is on all the time
and lives in an RF-tight box with industrial filtered feedthroughs,
the other is keyed by the sequencer for the low-band station so it's
only enabled during transmit ..

I've been running a pair of K2s + 5 XV transverters + KRC2 in my rover
for 5+ years now .. the only time I had problems was when the leaky
roof in the previous rover vehicle dripped too much water in one of
them, we had to open it up and prop it on the dashboard with A/C
running for 15 minutes to dry it out and then it worked fine again

They've not had an easy life .. some of the roads I rove on are pretty
interesting ;)

You probably need to open up the XV and look at how it was set up ..
jumpers move around depending on whether it's used with Elecraft or
foreign equipment, different attenuators, etc
Is the transverter power control working? e.g. if you select the band
on K2 does the XV light up?

If it's all set up properly, the pair of cables from K60XV and XV50
carry 28MHz between K2 and XV, antenna connects to big connector on XV

Well, for those following along I've figured this out ..

Backstory: I rove in V/U/uW contests with 11 bands, using a pair of
K2s as IF radios, a stack of XVs for low 4 bands, and a collection of
surplus, commercial, and homebrew stuff for the microwaves through 24G

Last winter's project was a move of the IF from 144 to 145MHz, but I
did this by tuning the K2 up to 29.1 and didn't pay attention to the
fact that it's only supposed to go up to 28.8 .. the net effect being
reduction in RX and TX both. I discovered this when I was working on
the level conversion project .. I couldn't get much power from the uW
K2. The low-band K2 was fine, with it's IF at 28.1, and that's when I
realized what was going on.

I ended up applying Sverre's 10M filter mod and tuning 10 up to 29.1
.. I now get +2dBm at 29.1 and just a tad under +1dBm at 28.1, which
is exactly what I need :)

[Elecraft] [K2] K60XV 0dBm output

Hi List ..

My winter project for the Jitney is to convert my 144 IF levels to
0dBm up to the transverters to avoid horrible disasters that were
happening with +30dBm IF levels ;)

I've got my microwave station ripped out of the Jitney and on the
bench, and I'm going through everything setting levels before I start
modifying stuff. I noticed that I could only get about -6dBm maximum
out of the K60XV in tune mode and discovered that that limitation was
caused by the autotuner being enabled so I fixed that.

The most I can make come out of the thing in tune mode now is about
-4dBm (0.4mW) ... and this is with the transverter band output levels
set to 1.27mW (+1dBm). R6 in my KAT2 doesn't seem have any effect
(it's at 470R now). I'm measuring with my trusty but idiosyncratic
General Microwave 476 power meter, which is pretty much right on the
money at 28MHz.

Anyone have any ideas where to look? I'm going to go grab the VHF/UHF
K2 and check it next ..

[Elecraft] XV144 - power input to RF module

[John D'Ausilio]

I'm considering modifying the XV144 I use in my microwave rover by
removing the RF power module. It looks like I should get around +10dBm
or so from the driver stage alone, which is just what I need to drive
the mixers in my transverters while being low enough to prevent major
damage on sequencing failure, etc. Has anyone done this and measured
the output?

I used Don's circuit on my low-band K2 (driving one each
50,144,222,432 XV) and an external sequencer in the Jitney .. the last
step of the sequencer enables TX in the K2. Steve's solution does it
in one board and doesn't require any mods to the K2, and it's
relatively easy to isolate 0dBm ..

I also use a filter similar to Steve's .. happened to have one of
Diz's universal low-pass filters
(http://kitsandparts.com/univlpfilter.php) in the kit box and built it
up for 10M and that eliminated a number of weird behaviours on TX ..

[Elecraft] KRC2 + K3 - wiring?

Seems to be a conflict .. the KRC2 manual sez ground wire between KRC2
p1 and K3 ACC p5 (which makes sense), KRC2 errata say to use K3 ACC p6
(which is DIGOUT0 and doesn't make sense to me). In any case, I've
wired the first way and AUXBUS from KRC2 p6 to K3 ACC p2. I'm getting
ERR PTT and weird behaviour .. almost as if I'm on 1 and 4 rather than
2 and 5 on the ACC connector, but I've checked and rechecked - the
diagram in the manual matches the numbers stamped in the connectors
and everything seems sane there also.

Anyone got any clues before I give up and put the K2 back in the jitney?

[Elecraft] OT: How to reply to a thread, and why it's important

Sorry for the spam, but I quit smoking tobacco last week and I'm in a
foul mood, and this is one of my pet peeves (along with HTML mail) ..


Those who use a threading mail program (Gmail is a great example) see
a thread as a group of messages all clumped together to make it easy
to read in context. You've probably noticed that often times a reply
to a thread will show up at the top level rather than in it's
sequential place in the thread .. creating a new, different thread
than the original. Then some people might reply to the "new" thread
while others reply to the original thread .. maybe yet another "new"
thread gets created. Ever wonder why?

Well, it's because some people do not use the "Reply" button, but
rather copy/past a subject line into a new email and post that. Seems
sensible at first blush, but doing so breaks threads .. bad netiquette
and unnecessary to boot. The key is in the (generally invisible) mail
headers. Every email has 'em, and you can make them visible in all
email clients one way or another (in gmail click on the little
dropdown box at the top left of any message and "View Original"). The
headers of interest for this topic are the Message-ID, In-Reply-To and
References headers.

Here's some of the headers from a recent top thread message on the
Elecraft list:

Notice how the In-Reply-To header from Tom's reply has the Message-ID
from Lee's original message? That, dear friends, is the key to
threading .. and those headers are only generated when you hit the
"Reply" button! When a user tries to get around the Reply button for
whatever reason, those headers are not generated and the thread is
broken..

So .. please use Reply often and responsibly, and help clean up all
the broken threads. It's true that reckless use of Reply (and Reply
All) can result in embarrasing situation when mail which is intended
to be private ends up on a list, but you should always examine the
generated reply before hitting Send anyway :)

This is a secret not many are aware of .. not only do they have very
nice cables (comprised of many fine strands) but also distribution

to get the sides repainted (why do they only make stainless steel
refrigerators with black sides?). Unfortunately I was unable to

I can tell you that moisture is a problem :(

last rove we spent all of Sunday driving around in pouring rain.
Unfortunately, the Jitney leaks a bit, and as the day went by more and
more water was accumulating here and there and one drip was landing
unnoticed on the low-band station K2. It started acting very weirdly
as you can imagine. We opened it up and propped it against the dash
with the A/C running + heat, and by the next stop not only was it
working much better but the overall gain seemed to increase quite a
bit!

Also, keep in mind that the level is only 0dBm .. it doesn't take much
of a problem to make that 0dBm go away :)  Make sure you use good
quality BNC connectors, especially when you start daisy-chaining XVs

I don't know that the XV432 fan is going to do you a lot of good. The
PCB on the '432 has holes cut in it to provide airflow through the
chassis while the others do not. Ultimately it's the bottom panel that
serves as the heatsink for the power amp module, so I'd think raising
it up and putting some airflow on that panel would be helpful.

[Elecraft] Delay between key in, key out on XV

I've been searching around and I can't seem to locate any information
on whether and how much delay there is between key in (or 8R) and key
out on the XV series transverters. I need an early PTT for my
about-to-be-integrated outboard T/R relays .. I've got a external
sequencer solution, but I got to thinking that if there's at least 50
or 100 ms delay coming out of that I could get rid of the diode on the
key in connector and use the 8R to fire a driver for the T/R relay.
Anyone know?

But satellite broadband is not a panacea .. I've been on all the
commercial services, and they work fine (mostly) for 'normal' users -
browsing, downloading stuff, etc. Forget about it if you do anything
involving upstream data, or encryption of any sort (including https).
Even downstream can suffer pretty horribly (depending on where you
live) at certain times of day when the load is near peak.

Thankfully I've moved back to civilization and have a cable connection
with 2 Mbit upstream and 10 down :)

I don't know if others have had the issues I've had with the XV
transverters, but I thought I'd report on my efforts this weekend ..

I run a stack of 4 XVs driving high-power TE amps in my rover.
Antennas are short yagis spaced relatively close to each other on one
mast. I've experienced failures of the PHEMT due to the large amount
of RF present on the unselected transverters, whose configuration
leaves the gate of the PHEMT connected to the antenna connector in
that state.

I suspect bandpass filters would probably eliminate the problem (I
have one on the 6M station and it's not given me any problems), but
space is at a premium in the rover. I decided to modify the XVs in the
following fashion:

I remove the jumper from the antenna connector to the pad leading to
the common on K1, and attach it to the W3 pad that's connected to the
NO contact, then cut the trace between the NO contact and W3 (leaving
W3 and the N connector connected to the output circuitry).

I short the K1 common to ground.

K1's NC contact is conveniently already tied to the input circuitry,
and I add W2 for split output.

Cut trace to K1 coil and reroute to 12V (powered when XV selected).

This repurposes K1 to short the input circuitry to ground whenever K1
is not energized (XV not selected). It's an easy mod for 6/2/222, but
a bit of a PITA for 432 (W3 is under K1).

I've also modified my TE amps by removing the T/R relay, and am adding
external T/R after the amp.

I'm pretty sure "adopted" means exactly that.

I guess the remaining question is when was it (or will it be)
published in the Federal Register.  It becomes effective 30 days
after that happens.

Heya Jack ..I took the "easiest" path and just connected on the PC
side of the KRC2 .. 2,3,5 to the PC, 6,8,9 to the XV and added
necessary jumpers (all but ALC). Only thing I'm worried about is the
total cable length on AUXBUS, from K2->KRC2->XV is about 4 feet ...

I'll know later today when it moves off the bench and into the jitney :)

needs the RS-232 communications for your use. This means that  you

So .. not a moment too soon. I've completed the new XV144 to use as
the intermediate IF in my rover microwave setup. Now I've already
configured the system  such that the K2 connects to a KRC2 with a
custom map, and the KRC2 switches around all sorts of stuff for me.
Last time out I ended up using an IC706 as the IF rig when the
equipment I was going to use didn't work. So now this time I'd like
all these things to play together .. the K2 driving an XV and the KRC2
and Roverlog.

Looking at the KRC2 manual, it sort of indicates an either/or
scenario, and jumpers determine whether the PC side of the cable gets
AUXBUS ans 8R and other control signals. Since I want a PC on there,
can I just parallel the K2 end? I was using a straignt serial molded
9-pin cable between the K2 and the KRC2, now I'll have to build one
(or maybe just hack into it and splice).

Look at the break delay setting .. I use a pair of K2s with my V/U/SHF
rover, and set the break delay to about 300ms to get the same effect
as a hard key (so my amp relays don't get thrashed). I'm assuming
that's why you would need hard PTT .. but maybe I'm wrong?

Assuming you meant 22 mW, you should indeed use the 251 mW setting of
the jumpers. The 1 mW setting is for 1 mW maximim. You'll be able to
use the input level control to tweak the transverter to full output
for your drive level.

I actually posted the start of this thread here a couple of days ago ..

They've got valid points for EME, but they don't apply so much to
typical VHF/UHF contest work. I've only got one rove in using the
Elecraft stuff .. the low band station worked great once I got the
right combination of IF cables and Ts. Strong signal performance was
great, conditions were so poor that there wasn't much weak signal
around :(

The high band station ended up using an IC-706, but that was a failure
in the 144-28 xverter .. we used the K2 as the bandswitch, because I
had integrated everything from 903-10G using a custom-mapped KRC2

I'll have more to say in the fall after I get more experience and
tweak out some bugs, but so far I like it

I used to have a K2 and I share the same comments you have mentioned as
well as Shawn's one.  Aside a number of minor things, I was mostly
annoyed by the bad ripple of the IF filters too, which is not a trivial
thing. They kept the filters area still at a 'very kit level' , maybe it

would have been better to put some extra effort there.

Another major draw back for me it was the 10Hz step tuning, which with
the very tight DSP set at maybe 50Hz BW it didn't really ensure a proper

operation in CW/weak signals. Yes one could eventually set the RIT as
the 'fine resolution tune' but then the split function was lost and, in
my case, I could not compensate the doppler anymore thus being obliged
to use another rig in TX...

to bias any soul. Aside this, I also have to report that building the
radio was definitely a nice experience bringing a lot of satisfaction
and excitement during its progression.

The KRC2 is an inline device, it has 2 DB9's on it. You cable from the
K2 to the KRC2, then from KRC2 to downstream serial stuff like
computer. I believe you cable to the KAT100 in parallel with the KRC2
.. check the KRC2 manual. I think you'll need a seperate serial port
for the steppir controller though ..

[Elecraft] mutiple XV daisy-chaining

So, how do you do it? I originally set mine up to use all BNC
plumbing, tees and female barrels with a right angle at the end. This
is giving inconsistent result, presumably because of inaccuracy in
spacing and stress on the plumbing. Today we've been trying various
combinations of stubs to the plumbing, but it seems like attenuation
is killing us (cables range from 12-24", RG-58). It seems like that
milliwatt is pretty easily lost in cabling/plumbing. So, those of you
with multiple XVs, how do you do it?

I've got a bit of an odd problem going on, now that I've finally got
everything integrated into the Intergalactic Roving Battle Jitney in
preparation for the weekend's event ..

I have one of my K2s set up for the 6 microwave bands from 903 to
10368. TRN1-TRN6 are all set up the same, with the frequency

I'm no metallurgist, but I'd do some testing to make sure that temp
doesn't make the copper weird and brittle. Seems to me that I've had
magnet wire go brittle in the flame of a butane lighter. Wiggle around
a stripped piece and make sure it doesn't snap off easily ..

[Elecraft] XV432 on the air!

Finally got around to building the XV432 this weekend .. pretty much
goes together just like the other XV's, took me about 6 hours. Fired
up just fine, got it tweaked and on the air last evening.

I'll be drilling the prototype combination end-panel this evening, and
if all goes well I'll post a pic of the 4-band stack installed in the
Jitney tomorrow sometime.

[Elecraft] K2 dial calibration

Trying to use Wayne's procedure for calibrating my dial using WWV on
10 Mhz. So I tuned it in using Spectrogram with 500/600 hz markers to
match the tones. Tweaked C22 till VXO and BFO matched up. Ran cal PLL
and cal FIL. Now I hear the signal fine, USB/LSB/CW, tuned in fine,
but the display is off over 5 Khz! I'm not sure what I'm missing, but
evidently it's something :)  Any suggestions out there?

[Elecraft] XV relay buzzing in high power environment

Got my XV50 integrated into the Intergalactic Roving Batttle Jitney
(TM) yesterday, and I'm QRV with 400 watts .. K2 feeding XV50 feeding
TE Systems amp. I got a hold of a buddy of mine about 30 miles away
for some on-air testing while I diddled around with SSBA/C settings.

Problem is if I enable *any* level of compression, the XV "buzzes" on
voice peaks and my signal sounds crappy. Best results were with SSBA=3
and SSBC=1-1 (using an MD-2 desk mike). Evidently some of the RF is
making it's way back inside the XV. Cabling is all good, shielded
cable to key the amp/Accuvolt, normal shielded auxbus cable. Even with
the 1-1 setting I get the buzzing whenever I drive the amp much above
300W.

Anyone else seen this and/or have any suggestions? I'll be setting up
144 and 222 this evening, but they don't have quite the power
capability of my 6M station .. I'll report in the next day  or two
whether they show the same behaviour ..

[Elecraft] XV power control

Recent model K2, just built the K60XV for it. VRDET looks fine .. half
a volt at the low end up to about 3.5 on the high end, and the
meter/display increase smoothly. When I connect one of the XVs to it,
the XV out pegs at about 150mw indicated and if I back the poiwer down
to min it still shows 4 bars on the XV. I've gotta find my Accuvolt
and build it so I have something to measure a milliwat with, but in
the meantime does anyone have any ideas/suggestions as to what may be
wrong? Seems to me that if VRDET looks OK then the K2/K60XV must be
working .. but all three XVs show the same effect which makes me
suspect the K2 .. I have another K2 but havn't done the KAT mod on it
yet, I suppose I can do that as well to isolate things ..

[Elecraft] XV combo side panels

XV owners .. I'm going to be fabricating a set of replacement side
panels for the XV series next week. They will replace the existing
side panels to allow a stack of 4 XV's to be mounted together, spaced
so that BNC T-s and barrels will connect the in/out if ports, and will
have a bend and mounting holes at the bottom to allow the stack to be
attached to a desktop (this is all for my rover). Since we'll have a
template, it occurred to me that maybe other XV users might be
interested in this project. If so, please email me OFF-LIST and let me
know you're interested. Don't have a cost estimate yet, but I can't
see how it would be that awfully expensive ...

Assumption: you're talking about the Elecraft XV-50

The XV outputs 20W independent of the drive configuration. It can be
driven with as little as 1mw of 28Mhz power. Assuming you use a K60XV,
the existence of the 100W bit doesn't matter .. without K60XV you
would use the original output connector, see the XV series manuals for
more info.

The KPA is integrated, the new amps are outboard. My understanding is
that you'll need the KPA in any case to drive the new amps to full
output. It's not really a question of "better", they serve different
purposes ..

When I last used a solderpot, my understanding is that you generally
*don't* have flux in the pot .. just solder. When tinning a wire, you
dip it in paste or liquid flux and then into the pot. Solder
manufacturers sell bar solder (with no flux) for use in solder pots.

Noise increase should be unmistakable. Make sure the MMIC isn't in
backwards :)  If you have a key attached, and happened to transmit
into it, just order replacement MMIC (get 3, about $10 delivered :)
from Elecraft.

[Elecraft] Rover progress - transverter builds

Moving along in the direction of the mostly-all-Elecraft rover
station, I've completed the 50 and 144Mhz transverters and should wrap
up the 222 this evening. As expected, the Elecraft transverters were
enjoyable to build and worked the first time (once I corrected my
jumper config screwups). I did find a small problem with my K60XV
during testing .. the input coax center conductor had detached from
the BNC connector.

Initial tests indicate performance at least as specified (and maybe a
bit better). Going to do noise figure and sensitivity testing next
week, but casual beacon listening and comparison to a DEMI/TS-850
looked very promising.

The physical layout is very nice also .. K8ISK and I are working on
building new side panels which will attach to each of the 4 XVs and
tie them into a single unit, spaced convienently to allow BNC T and
barrels to connect them together (might even extend them to the K2,
which would make a monolithic 160M-70cm station with the footprint of
the K2).

Current plans are to drive the beast to Dayton for show+tell and
shakedown prior to the June test .. if it doesn't end up in the flea
market it'll be at the FDIM hotel. Contact me closer to the date for
personal tours :)

[Elecraft] transverter power out stability

Just finished up an XV50 over the weekend. While trying to align the
thing, I noticed that the power out drifts down, slowly at first and
then gaining speed, with key down. Further investigation showed that
the K2 was the culprit rather than the XV. I remember some threads
about power output level stability a couple years ago .. did they
affect the transverter output as well? Going to troubleshoot some more
this evening, but wondering if anyone else has seen this behaviour ..

Problem is, would there be anyone there for him to work? I go into the
Novice bands every once in a while, and activity there (other than the
occasional net) is very scarce. Better to steer him to the qrp freqs
and teach him QRS :)

[Elecraft] K2 as IF for V/UHF and uW

I'd love to hear from people who have been using the K2 as an IF for
v/u/micro contesting. I purchased a rover vehicle recently and I'm
thinking about abandoning the riceboxes it came with and move to
transverters for the low bands.

Current setup has dual FT-100's, which drive TE amps for 50, 144, and
432 directly and 222 using a 28Mhz IF. The microwaves (through 10G)
are all run with 144Mhz IF from an IC-706.

I'm thinking a couple of K2s with some switching of control and IF so
they can share a set of Elecraft xverters (hopefully including one for
432 eventually - hint, hint :) That would cover the bottom 6 bands
directly .. I'm tending towards an SDR solution for the top 4 anyway
that would give me a nice bandscope display.

Anybody out there roving with a K2?

Might be a bit dated, but very thorough and pretty easy to read, with

So, now that I'm back from the beach and it's actually quiet so I can
hear stuff ... :)

The birdies are everywhere! All bands, every few clicks on the encoder
I encounter an audible one, and I suspect there are other above and
below my hearing ability. Any KX1 gurus have any ideas on how to
troubleshoot? Maybe I lost some decoupling somewhere?

[Elecraft] KX1 Birdie Hell

Working the fox hunt tonite .. 20 is pretty quiet here at the beach,
and tuning around I hear weird birdies on specific frequencies. A
frequency will be clear, and make a 10 hz step and there's a bird
there. Then, halfway through the test the noise level drops
considerably and the birdies are everywhere! Something seems to have
changed .. this is the longest workout my KX1 has had since being born
earlier this year and maybe there's a bad solder joint somewhere? No
test equipment at the beach :(
