[Elecraft] What do I do when "When all else fails" fails?: (boot and reload problem)

2022-06-11 Thread Stephen Dubin via Elecraft
Today when I pressed the "power" button on K3; instead of the friendly startup
message,  I got four blinking green lights followed by an evanescent blank
orange main screen.  I invoked the "hold in "down/change" knob while pressing
"power" which gave interesting but not useful results.  So,  I connected my
computer with the K3 utility program and checked to be sure I had (on my
computer) the latest firmware.. I then followed the directions in the help file
for "What if all else fails,"  to attempt downloading of fresh firmware.  After
holding in the "power" button for 10 seconds, I go the predicted flashing red
"TX"  light and the "MCU LD"  on the screen. I operated the utility program (*
apparently successfully)  to "send all firmware  to radio" and the green stripe
progressed across my computer's screen with the following sequence of messages:
Elecraft K3 Utility Revision 1.16.7.25
OS Version 10.0 Build 19044
K3 MCU revision ??.??. RS-232 speed 38400 bit/s.
Sending firmware file C:\Users\dubin\AppData\Roaming\Elecraft\K3
Firmware\hmcu0567.hex to MCU
Waiting 6 seconds for reset to complete
Error code 0xE245: No response after reset
MCU verification failed. Reload MCU.
Click "Close" to close this window I did this procedure two more times with he
same  outcome.\ What do I do now that "When all else fails" seems to fail? I
will sincerely appreciate any help ( especially if it works) to get my beloved
K3 working. .

Flex and SCS have firmware upgrades to improve handshaking speed when

Improvements to the VARA software are imminent, if not already released. "

We had a huge surge of orders on May 17th from both Dayton, on-line and

[Elecraft] KX3 PX3 PSK31 SPLIT

2021-04-03 Thread stephen shearer

OK,  I tried...

Can I set up the internal PSK31 for split?

I tried, the best I could do is RIT.
It would be nice to TX and have split to tune RX.
PSK31 works, but is touchy.  It would be nice to leave the TX freq alone
(so the other station doesn't have to chase you) as you move the RX freq
to keep any lock.  Stronger signals "seem" to less of a problem.
BTW, the PX3 with keyboard is very nice for digital modes as "function"
keys provide text memories.

(has anyone else made use of this feature?)

Decode ON (for one) makes SPLIT N/A ??

Anyone tried this on K4?

OK, yes - put it on the "to do" list...

I have had the "same" issue with my KX3.  Adjusting the TX EQ, CMP, and
Mike gain.
See:
https://observer.wunderwood.org/2015/09/09/transmit-audio-and-compression-with-the-elecraft-kx3/

OK, I would like to see for the K4, a built-in APP that will adjust all
three by (speaking the phonetic alphabet ?? or other) and specifying
wide, normal, or DX.  Well, I can dream.  I have a couple of different
headsets and even from Heil, they all have different elements.  Need
different settings.  How nice (for Field Day for example) to be able to
sit down in front of the radio and have the radio, tune to your voice...

It must be possible???

Re: [Elecraft] Where are the K4 reviews?

2021-03-30 Thread stephen shearer
"Group 1, done by May" ??  Would be nice.  I am not going to hold my
breath. The few (2?), "I got a UPS package", were from orders entered
the first day.  Group 1 was not closed until Jan 2020??

"I Think" some of the communications from Elecraft are "hung up" with
the Ferengi print from the online event keeping Elecraft from
re-publishing any of the online event communication until the end of the
30 day "hold".  If I was running the online event, I would want
exclusive "use" of any publications for the full 30 days.  So, 16? Apr...

Yes, I could pay my $10 and see all the doc.  I was unavailable during
the actual event, so I didn't sign up at all.

The last I looked, the KX3 is back ordered, too.

I would not mind an additional 6 month delay, IF I was told it was
because Elecraft was moving to TN so that they could save 10% over
current cost/taxes in CA.  I don't expect a move to happen. So, 60 days
till the end of May, can they do it?

I placed my Group 1 order a week or so before Thanksgiving 2019...

The natives are getting restless and it would be good to hear something
official from Elecraft. It's been too long since we've heard much of anything.
I would like to know if I can expect my Group 1 order, submitted on August 8,
2019, has any chance of getting to me before summer, 2021 begins or is it
likely that I will have to wait another year. I could have asked much the same
question a year ago never expecting that a year from then, there would still be
no K4 sitting on my table by now. By the way, when I submitted my order the
expected shipping date was estimated to be November or December, 2019. That's
pre-pandemic.

[Elecraft] K4 K-POD vs KX3/PX3

2021-03-15 Thread stephen shearer

OK, I own a KX3/PX3 and have a K4 on order.

I like my KX3/PX3 and I am looking forward to having a K4 with the K-POD.
I "see" the K-POD more as a remote KNOB.

What I do like with PX3 is the ability to use the programmable  keyboard
function keys (or any key you program) to either provide a macro
function or a "send text" function and having 50 of each type.   This
function is in addition to the message buttons on the KX3.  I "can"
operate a CW/RTTY/PSK contest exchange with serial number with just the
KX3/PX3 and a USB keyboard (and paper log sheet).  No computer required.

Will the K4 have this same function?  I may have missed it.  If the KX3
can do it, it should be "easy" for the K4 to do the same...

I can see the logic of not having function keys for a USB keyboard.  If
the K4 is being used for ANY contest or expedition, the K4 would "most
likely" have a computer attached running software like N1MM+ (and
function keys for text or macros). As I am not likely to backpack the
K4...  and I probably have answered my own question.

73, steve WB3LGC

I do like the function keys for the PX3, although full function
computers are now about the same size and weight as a small keyboard,
with more functionality.

In DATA mode, it is ~350Hz (closer to 400Hz for flat data).

Is this an Elecraft problem with settings (firmware) or is there a

Subject: [Elecraft] KX3 battery upgrade?

The KX3 is my favorite of my HF radios right now. But one of my annoyances
is the internal battery limitations.

I always wind up carrying an external 6_Ah or 10_Ah LiFePo4 battery into the
field when I use this radio, an external charge controller, and solar panel.
It's not a big problem, but it also should not be a big project to improve
this situation. The KXBC3 has enough real estate to include a lithium
battery charger, and even a solar charge controller in its space. The amount
of battery energy that could fit in-place of the NiMH cells could
approximately triple the capacity of the AA cells.

So I have these questions:

1) How many of you out there might buy an upgrade which replaces the
KXBC3 board with a lithium battery manager, and a associated battery pack?

2) Are there any 3rd parties already making anything like this?

Terry,

I am most likely at the end of the group, too.
I originally ordered a K4.
I change the order this past spring, to the K4D.
I "don't need" a K4, even.  I have great fun wit a KX3 + PX3 + KXPA100...
I wanted a home station so that the KX3 was my portable station.
I looked at the "D" upgrade as, an "Easter gift" and "the boss" approved.
Yes, I would like to have it for Christmas even if it is a year late.
And it my be Easter 2021...

And as my wife says about buying a dress, it isn't just the dress, it is
also the accessories...
The accessories will be added this coming Christmas.  Computer,
Monitor(s), upgrade the coax, and maybe 500 watts + AC power upgrade

Folks who "think" that they have a good match and that the nut just needs to be

[Elecraft] KPA1500 Power Supply Fan Noise

2020-06-27 Thread STEPHEN R ZUMBRUN
Hello, all and Happy Field Day. Say I just wanted to comment about Elecraft
service and the help they provided me to make a mod to my KPA1500. My KPA1500
power supply fan was rather noisy. I had seen discussion on the reflector about
this so I contacted Doug at Elecraft service. He ask if I could solder. I
informed him I could and he sent me a new 22 ohm, 3 watt resistor and i swapped
it out with the 10 ohm, 3 watt resistor on the LED board of the power supply. I
am much pleased with the sound of the power supply fan now after the
modification. My amp is an early serial number and the new amps come with the
22 ohm resistor on the LED board. So...if your power supply is a bit noisy you
might consider this mod and contact Doug at Elecraft Service. The Elecraft part
number of the resistor is E500128. 73, Steve W0SZ.

[Elecraft] K1 Problems

2020-06-20 Thread Stephen Roberts
I'm suddenly out of a signal. I get hiss but no signal. I'm using a k1 fil 2
40/20 board.

I was getting weak gain on the 40m side so went in to peak the L1/L2 L5/L6
Inductors.
I messed about with them but was unable to peak them as I heard no change in the
volume of the hiss.

I also tried C2 Gain tweak and not joy there either. I hear no change in the
hiss volume
as I turn it.

I rigged up my 7300 with a dummy load and xmitted on 7050 and 14050 and heard a
signal
but still no effect by changing L1/L2 or L5/L6

I pulled the band board looking for any issues with soldering or whatever and
found
nothing. Put the board back in and now I get zip. No receive at all, just
hissing.

It was working fine yesterday although I felt the gain was very low and needed
adjustment
which led me to this point in time.

Suggestions on how to get it going again?

Re: [Elecraft] NOT the feedline (was KPA-1500 faulting on 6m; SWR issues)

Hello Peter

I suspect RFI as well. I do not have a KPA1500, so my advice is not
worth much, but the fact that the fault only occurs when a signal is
being radiated sends me a red flag.  I had a similar problem here with
my SPE amplifier power output. I was measuring it on an LP-100A
wattmeter.  It turns out that 1.8 MHz energy from the SPE amp radiated
from my vertical antenna and  was getting into a new wire doublet
antenna and coming back down the ladder line into the shack. The ladder
line was about 7 inches from the power coupler for the LP-100A. RF
caused the readings to go wacky and it looked like my amplifier was
going postal!  The problem was high rf fields next to the power meter
coupler.

Ferrite balun heating can be seen with a VSWR meter if you set the power
at some intermediate level, key the amp up with a steady carrier, and
watch for VSWR creeping up.  Loose pins in coax can also be a problem.
They can heat up and disconnect or start arcing. Those problems do not
typically show VSWR creep. They happen all at once usually.

The KPA1500 works fine into a dummy load. (No RFI)  That is a big
clue.   Good luck and I hope you find the problem. Maybe an RF sniffer
would detect the ingress point?

This is the only condition on 6m where there is no fault. Brand new
coax,
old coax, brand new antenna, old antenna, with balun, without balun.
Always

faults except when feeding the pure resistive dummy load. If there's any
reactance it trips or gives false SWR info.

I would also add, why would a 2:1 SWR trip out the amp at 25 or 30 Watts
of drive? On the regular HF bands I can use the internal tuner to
take out

a 2.5 or 3:1 SWR and it still sends 1400-1450 Watts up the pipe..

To remove any doubt, a 1.5kw or close dummy load at the end of the
coax to

replace antenna, would confirm the amp issue.

On 1/6/20 12:27 pm, Peter Dougherty wrote:

Paul, please re-read what I wrote. The 90W figure is with the amp IN

I generally like to run about 1200W on 6m, but even if I turn my K3s
drive down to 20 Watts, it will STILL hard-fault regularly. NO AMOUNT
OF DRIVE from the K3s will stop these problems. If the amp is set to
deliver power it's going to fault on 6m, regardless of what the ATU is
set for (bypass or inline), and the KPA will miss-read the SWR of the

antenna system.

The resistance figure is 50.8 Ohms, and the reactance is -11 according
to the AA-230. The only difference between "works reliably" and
"faults out all the time" is one is a resistive-only load, the other
has a reactive component.

Agree...  the adapter has a PTT input.  I was planning on making a

I tried the splitter cable (I may have gotten the wrong one) it didn't

Re: [Elecraft] K1 issues with RIT and ATT Led's

2020-04-07 Thread Stephen Roberts
Several responded and it was a couple of things. First was that the main IC
wasn't seated completely. I removed it, checked the pins and straightened them
a bit. That apparently brought the LED's back to life so when I powered up I
could see them initialize. Then I went to the menu and turned them on. Didn't
even know there was a menu choice that controlled the LED's. Felt kinda dumb
when I was told about that. Oh well, I'll take an easy fix any day...

[Elecraft] K1 Issues with RIT and ATTN LED's not functioning

2020-04-06 Thread Stephen Roberts
I recently purchased a K1 and found that the LED's for the RIT and ATTN don't
function correctly. When I turn on the rig the LED's cycle correctly then go
out. When I push either of the buttons and turn the RIT or ATTN on, neither of
the lights come on.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and JS8CALL

2020-03-14 Thread stephen shearer
I use KX3 for wsjt-x and JS8Call.  I just connect the KX3 audio
(headphone jack) to the USB sound card.  I use the waterfall to "hear"
what is going on and I like the quiet.  I have not noticed hum.  I have
a few snap on toroids on the audio lines in case.  I use 12" audio
cables from the KX3 to the sound card and a 3' USB cable to the RPi.  I
run 80 watts, often...

Michael,

I have good luck using my KX3 with a Raspberry Pi 3B+ and also the new Raspberry Pi 4 for both
JS8Call and WSJT-X. I use an inexpensive USB audio adapter/sound card and standard stereo
1/8" (3.5mm) male to male cables connected between the MIC and PHONES jacks on the KX3
and the sound card. To listen to the receive audio and monitor transmit audio, I split the
PHONES output using an 1/8-inch "Y cable" and feed one side to the sound card and
the other side to a powered speaker. For CAT control and PTT via CAT I use the standard
Elecraft USB serial cable from the ACC1 jack to a Raspberry Pi USB port.

In Settings on the Radio tab, under CAT Control, I choose the K3/KX3 or KX3 as
the rig and /dev/ttyUSB0 as the serial port. You'll also want to match the
radio serial port settings, typically, 38400, 8, 1 and none. On the Audio tab,
under Soundcard, I select Default:CARD=device for both Input and Output.

This method may result in some low-level 60 and 120 Hz audible ground loop hum
when AC powered, particularly with the powered speaker connected, but the
transmit signal, at least in my case, is clean. You can certainly use a
SignaLink or equivalent unit for better isolation and level control, but I've
found that the little USB audio adapter/sound card works fine and is a really
compact solution for portable operation!

the connectors from Elecraft, the program is loaded on the Pi and seems to
operate properly, but doesn't seem to work with the KX3. I will need to get a

Re: [Elecraft] K4 news?

2020-03-05 Thread stephen shearer
As I wait for my K4D… I just upgraded from a K4 and added a K-Pod as the
Easter Bunny and I decided it may not be delivered until after Easter
(early Apr) anyway. So, I am in a planning stage.

BTW, the upgrade was easy. I sent an electronic message to Sales and
Madelyn Gomez emailed me back and a message and a link to pay. Simple

Things seem to run slow since I retired.  It take me time to figure out
where I "stashed" parts I know I have to do even a small project... My
old desk mike needs connector wires re-located on the pins to fit the
K4.  I have upgraded my headset and even purchased an adapter to work
with my KX3 (I was going to make one).  I may just order a Heil/Kenwood
mike cable, too.

Maybe by the time it gets here, I'll be ready...

The KX3 + amp works...

YES,

I am using a KX3.   I use the "bar" on the right and set 20db of

Mike gain is now set at aprox 40, rather than 3-4 (one step makes a BIG

I can set "ALC" correctly.

I call this the "gain chain" problem. It depends a bit on how you are set up
but try the following. Go into the menu on the K3S and turn down the LIN OUT value. I
have mine set at 2 I believe. Once you do this you should be able to more finely control
the drive level.

This is likely to fix your problem at once.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Shipping Delay

2020-01-16 Thread stephen shearer
One of the software projects I worked on...  The lead eng reported it
will be done in two weeks, for about six weeks.  Then WE looked at
what/how we were doing the job and took a different approach.  it WAS
done in two weeks, but needed six weeks of data (micro code) entry.  An
intern did the data entry.

I don't see (from what I read) the delay being a software/firmware
issue, but a hardware supply issue.  AND, I would like to see the
supplier getting the product right (no replacements needed).

I did get "the" K4 email today.

Re: [Elecraft] CW skimmer

2019-12-31 Thread stephen shearer

OK, I am most likely late to the discussion...

Yes, it would be nice to have all the software under the hood. But, I
know I am going to need a computer for Fldigi, wsjt-x, and js8call. So I
might as well add skimmer there (if I want it) too. I don't use skimmer
now.  I like contests but I want a slower pace.  Beside at my QTH, just
entering a contest almost guarantees first place (not quite, but
almost).  I also like keeping my software up to date and by putting it
"in the box" I will loose that control.  I "see" a USB connection to the
computer a simple interface.  The LAN connection should provide even
more capability (1G ??).

Since my shack computer will not be W10, I hope function software for
the K4 will be Linux compatible (as it has been for K3's).  I moved from
W10 to "windows" Mint in 2019 and haven't looked back. I have also been
using a Raspberry Pi with my KX3 for wsjt-x as a remote station (remote
to living room) and it works very well...

I wish all a Happy New Year (as tomorrow is "January"...)

73, steve WB3LGC

back to my research on a computer for the shack as my KX3 portable ops
have been using a laptop and I want the K4 to be a fixed station.

I may continue with the Raspberry Pi, to begin, as it works...

Walter,

Someone did comment (maybe a different thread/group) about reading
Scouter and Boys Life at the barber shop and noted that ARRL has NO ads

A troop in our area uses radios to allow groups of older youth to hike in
separate groups. The fast group (always the youth, oddly) checks in every 15
minutes. If they can’t make contact, they stop until they can. With a license,
they can switch from FRS/GMRS to amateur bands and hike with a bigger gap.

JOTA is on the third full weekend of October every year. This year, we had over
9000 Scouts participate in the US.

https://k2bsa.net/jota-usa-reports/

From running a JOTA station a couple of times, I believe that prospective hams
have just as wide a range of interests as active hams. We need a shotgun
approach with each pellet (metaphor falling apart here) being someone who is
excited about that activity. You don’t have to be an expert—I ran the “send
your name in Morse Code” station and I’m not a CW operator—but you do need to
represent how that activity could be exciting.

Hands on, do everything hands on. No butts in seats for PowerPoint. Anybody
ever say “I think I’ll go home and watch a nice PowerPoint preso tonight”?

Here are some photos from our JOTA station this year. I’m the guy with the
white hair. Oh, that doesn’t help. White hair and beard. Note the empty log
sheet in front of the KX-line. HF was pretty dead. Must do digital modes next
year.

I mean this sincerely. I'm NOT in grumpy-old-man mode, though I can do that
very well. The majority of QSOs with new people are about as interesting,
enduring and deep as a short chat in the checkout line at Safeway. Many aren't
even that interesting. PSK ops just throw on a brag tape and walk away. It's a
pleasant few minutes, but it rarely leads to anything more. It does happen, but
who in their right mind would spend thousands of dollars and hours on the
outside chance it does? The opportunity for superficial chit chat with
strangers was NEVER on my mind at 14 when I got interested in ham radio so it's
a bit much to expect teenagers today to care about that.

Ham radio has always been chock full of quick award-qualifying or contest
contacts. Worked All Continents, countries, states, provinces, counties, grids,
lighthouses, summits, guys named Fred. Go back as far as you want in QST and
it's full of honor rolls, contest results...and SKs. It's nothing new to this
period in ham radio. But ham radio has also been full of interesting challenges
too. It's never been a very homogeneous hobby. I have no predictions except
things are rapidly changing and that will continue in whatever direction those
entering the hobby take it. The Baofeng Techs will change it as much as us
Heathkit Kids did. Change is good.

Re: [Elecraft] Latest rumors on K4

2019-12-21 Thread stephen shearer
I agree the field testing is a very important step for both the rig and
the manual.

A step that should take as long as it takes...
Software bugs are one thing but finding hardware issues are better found
before the  product starts shipping mode.
I am sure I am at the end of the shipping list, so I hope to see the
manual (on line) long before I see the rig...

I don't remember the kickoff of the KX3.
I didn't purchase mine until ~1+ year after shipping started.
I wanted to be sure all was OK...
This time, why wait.
I was thinking about a K3s last year but "something" put me off ordering.
I am glad I waited as all the "options" are included and I can add
"stuff" like the upgrade to K4D etc.

Can "anyone" say Christmas 2020?

I am amused by the creative financing method used by Elecraft. (smart)
Where else would you find "investors" loan the operating capital at zero
interest for almost a year and to have only ever seen? serial 001 of the
product.
You will also note the "1st Shipping Group" is still open for orders
(the real capital).
And "and are targeting our first deliveries for January 2020." has
deliveries (plural) so, at least 2 K4's will be delivered by Jan 31st...
Waiting... as long as it isn't "Christmas in July"...  on the
other-hand, I might be able to convince my wife to upgrade to a K4D, by
then.

One of the purposes of Field Test is to refine the manual.

While the K4 does contain a processor, it is dedicated to the K4 and
its functions, so don't expect anything like a PC or other general
purpose computer.
You will be able to download firmware updates, but I don't know if a
separate PC will be required - I expect it will, so don't throw out
your shack computer.

what I am waiting for is the manual.  It will/should answer many of
my questions.

Maybe before the K4 is shipped?

Like, with a LAN connection on the K4 and an internal PC (of some
sort) will I be able to download updates direct to the K4?
or, will I need a separate PC and use the USB port on K4 to do the
admin "stuff" ?
There are plenty of single board computers that would fit the need,
if required.
I expect to use a SBC for FT8 and JS8, as it works nice now on my KX3

only six minutes long   a very very good video.

Not one sentence about amateur radio. Not one ad, not one picture, not one

get a "hands on" understanding of solar physics, electronic equipment,
electromagnetic fields, solar weather, and the harsh environments that are
Intersolar and interstellar space.

Early involvement should come with hands on experiments, internships, summer

programs in the communications, computer technology and defense industries.

A sequenced set of building block project kits (Elecraft style would be
ideal) that introduce basic principles and result in a receiver, a
transmitter, and an antenna could provide a gateway, and present hams should
underwrite making these available at a low cost and with available "Elmers"
to help. This equipment could be used for radio astronomy, communications,
physics experiments, meteorology, and contesting. Contesting should be
portrayed as glamorous "yacht racing in space" and much cooler than on the

I believe we are at a second "Sputnik" point in the quest for the high

What do you think?

Re: [Elecraft] DZOTA: Dead Zones On The Air

2019-12-10 Thread stephen shearer
Don't forget the east coast "National Radio Quiet Zone (NRQZ)"...  I
have a star party (https://www.ahsp.org/, on my list of things to do)
and I checked on the use of HF radio in the zone.  Unless I was looking
at the wrong place, you can use radio in the zone unless you are at the
telescopes or UHF/microwave. I only found a reference to a "permit" for
fixed ham station like repeaters.  Can you say East Coast Dead Zone...
is there going to be a DZSOTA ??

Thanks to the "tin-hat brigade, we have an even worse situation here
in the Santa Cruz Mountains -- no cell coverage at all. For years,
this kept me from a smart phone, but I now know this was a very bad
decision. Many reasons why, but mainly that they work for internet
access on WiFi, they function as a pretty nice "ad hoc" camera, while
on the road (and waiting in a doctor's office) I have access to news
outlets of my choice via my cell data plan or the office's guest WiFi.

We buy our cell service from Page Plus Cellular, a third party company
reselling Verizon service at monthly Pay As You Go rates for the
amount of data that we need. For us, 2GB/month is more than we're
likely to need except when traveling, at a cost of about
$30/phone/month. Accounts are flexible, so it's no big thing to buy
more data in months we might be traveling. The Motorola phones we
bought about three years ago cost us about $350 each.

mike gain was too high and starting over works...  FT8 is working

Re: [Elecraft] K4: savable profiles?

Joe, welcome to "Elecraft" and Mint...

I have been using Mint since March ??   I used another form of Linus
with another laptop.  Liked it but don't remember why I went back to W7
(then).
Not new to computers, just tired of W10 messing my system settings.  I
think I update Mint a few times a week but since it doesn't mess things,
all goes well.

I am currently using my KX3 with a "headless" Raspberry Pi running
wsjt-x for FT8.  I was in the kitchen this morning, stuffing the turkey
and operating FT8 80m on my laptop with a VNC link to the "shack"...
Yes, any excuse to eat.  My parents, parents, parents... did come to the
"new" world on the Mayflower back in 1620, so it IS required and my
father said that his side of the family was here to meet and help the
new settlers...

I have enjoyed the Elecraft rigs.  I built a 10w K2, I have the
KX3/PX3/amp(what ever the number is), and looking forward to having a
"full time" shack radio.  The KX3 combo will become my full time
portable rig, no shack time...

The reflector is a great place to ask questions...

Will the K4 have the ability to save (and then select from) various
"profiles" so that a user can go from, say, 20m 100-watt CW to 80m 10-watt
FT8 with all the saved settings (power, mode, bandwidth, audio in/out
levels) taking effect simply by selecting the chosen profile?

[Elecraft] Tony CW transceiver for socially isolated kids

I have seen advertisements for FRS walkie talkies with Morse code. It may be
done using the PTT button, but I'm pretty sure there is a tone. Price was

[Elecraft] Reflected power

2019-09-16 Thread Stephen Rabinowitz
Many thanks to all of those who responded to my message and shared their
experiences and thoughts: Dave WO2X, Mike VA3MW, Bob K4TAX, Jim K9YC, Victor
4X6GP, and Alan N1AL. With a dummy antenna (Cantenna) on 7MHz, and a 1.1:1
match, using 10w drive the KPA-1500 puts out 605w at first, then settles
down two seconds later to 384w with 8w reflected power. With 25w drive, the
initial output is 1431w, settling down to 1105w after two seconds, with 20w
reflected power. So, the fault seems to be in the antenna, not in the
amplifier.
The same initial power surge occurs on 14MHz using the dummy antenna. I
don't know if it originates in the transceiver or the amplifier, but it
doesn't have much effect on reflected power except with the defective
antenna. Answering some of the questions that were posed, the double bazooka
in this case is the high power version from Radiowavz, two years old. A
common mode choke from DX Engineering sits between the end of the feed coax
and the antenna. Several Mix 31 snap-on chokes from Palomar are on various
short coax jumpers in the shack, and the ground system is very good.
The double bazookas I use on 80m and 30m work well and are from
iacantennas.com. I am ordering a 40m version from them to replace the one
that seems to be faulty. I will try to report the result after I install it.
Many thanks again to all,
73, Steve K2SN

[Elecraft] Reflected power

2019-09-15 Thread Stephen Rabinowitz
My KPA-1500 switches from operate to standby due to reflected power more
than 200w whenever drive power exceeds about 8 watts on 7 MHz. The forward
power at that point is about 400w. The antenna is a double bazooka that
shows an SWR of about 1.2 on a RigExpert AA-230Pro antenna analyzer. A
Telepost LP-100A digital wattmeter shows SWR 1.3 with Z=52, R=49, Ph=17, and
X=15. The KP1500 tunes to an SWR of what it labels 1.1 on that frequency.
The latest firmware, version 2.27 is installed. This problem does not occur
with double bazooka antennas on 80m or 30m, or with Yagis from 20m to 6m. It
seems to me that there is a brief surge in reflected power at the very onset
of the transmission that triggers the response, but that the reflected power
quickly decreases to normal levels of just a few watts. Any ideas for
dealing with this problem would be much appreciated.

[Elecraft] MD2 microphone

I don't know whether anyone can help, but I am trying without any success
to get the MD2 microphone working with a SunSdr2 transceiver, which is able
to provide the necessary bias voltage I believe. What I am lacking, and
have not been able to find online is the original manual for the microphone
giving pinout and bias details - for I'm sure that there is something that
I must have missed.

Re: [Elecraft] Craziest / most rewarding QSOs

2018-09-14 Thread Stephen Dubin via Elecraft
Rather apropos to the current season, I remember a particularly rewarding QSO
that I had a couple of years ago during a severe linear windstorm (derecho?).
Our mains power had been out for about 18 hours. I fired up my KX1 (on
internal batteries, it reported a mighty 1.8 watts into my OCF up 15' on 20 m.)
at about 20:00. My CQ call was answered by a gentlemen in Ohio who identified
himself as a clergy person. After comforting me with compliments about how good
my signal was, he ended the QSO by wishing me, "May God richly bless you and
give you light." About 15 seconds, the lights came back on.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] RS232 xcvr control when serial ports are occupied

2018-07-15 Thread Stephen Rector via Elecraft
I'm following up here with the verified solution to my issue.

To recap - When I used a KXSER cable to connect my KXPA/KX3 to my Ciro Mazzoni
Magloop antenna controller, that left no port available for me to control the
KX3 with RS232 using the program FLRig. The best solution I found was to use a
DB9 Y-connector in conjunction with a breakout board for the DB9 branch going
to the antenna controller. On that board, I patched only the RXD and ground
lines: pins 2 and 5, from input to output.

With this configuration, the Antenna controller has its TXD pin left
unconnected. As many here noted, this is of necessity since only one TXD driver
can exist on a common TXD line. So, for the controller to work, FLRig must be
running and connected to the radio. Since FLRig polls the KX3 control
parameters, the Antenna controller receives the VFO data it needs on its RXD
line. Apparently it doesn't matter that the controller is not doing the
polling, as long as something else is.

If I wanted to return polling autonomy to the antenna controller, I would have
to disconnect the Y-junction. But I think I will keep things in place. Just
because FLRig is running on the computer, doesn't mean that I can't use the KX3
standalone as I usually have in the past. So this is an acceptable solution.
I'll probably post it on Ciro Mazzoni's user site for others' benefit.

Thanks all for the help and pointers!

Steve, NU7B

Don:

I tried a 3.5mm Y-connector at the KXPA and this did not work. But based on
your feedback and also that of N6TV, I see that I have multiple TX drivers on
the TXD line. Even if there is no TX from the antenna controller, the
low-impedance of its TXD driver will load the line. Bob also thinks the
controller may be polling for info, much like the program FLRIG does. One
correction to your info Don, I think TXD is pin 3 on the DB-9, and not pin 2.

The KXSER cable DB9 shell appears to be molded - it's not obvious how to
disassemble it. So I will need to go into the controller to disconnect TXD
there. I'll report back on whether or not that works, next weekend.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] RS232 xcvr control when serial ports are occupied

2018-07-08 Thread Stephen Rector via Elecraft
Hi Don:

Yes - it occurred to me after sending the post that I might be able to create
the split at the KXPA with a stereo Y-cable/connector. I am using a KXUSB to
the computer, with a KXSER cable going from the the antenna controller to the
KXPA. It is the KXUSB that presently has no place to connect to.

So - I think I can try a 3.5mm stereo y-junction at the KXPA. Hopefully
impedances won't be an issue at 38400 baud...

I did look for RS232 multiplexers - they seem to exist for industrial
applications. The documentation seemed to be sparse on the web.

Anyway - thanks for the pointer :)

[Elecraft] [KX3] RS232 xcvr control when serial ports are occupied

2018-07-08 Thread Stephen Rector via Elecraft
Hy home station is a KX3 + KPXA100, and I can control the radio via the RS232
port on the KXPA. However, recently I added a Ciro Mazzoni magloop to the
station, and its controller plugs in to the KXPA serial port to sniff for
frequency information, allowing re-tuning on the fly. This leaves no RS232 port
left for remote control of the radio.

How do I modify this arrangement to add an extra serial port for KX3 control?
My first thought is that, since the antenna controller just sniffs for data, I
could add a DB-9 Y-cable to provide the extra port at the controller serial
port location. However, packets could still collide ...does the protocol handle
this? Is there some sort of multiplexer available?

Thanks,

Steve

Re: [Elecraft] What to check when FT8 won't transmit (K3, Signalink)

2018-06-05 Thread Stephen Dubin via Elecraft
Here is a link to the instructions from Signalink:
http://www.tigertronics.com/pgmsetup.htm#WSJT-X

Part of that file says:
WSJT-X

    Click File, then click Settings.
In the new window that opens, click the General tab and enter your call in
the My Call text box.
**  Click the Radio tab and select "None" in the Rig drop-down menu.  Select
"Vox" as the PTT Method.  Note that your radio's VOX setting should be OFF.
This setting simply allows the SignaLink USB to control PTT
Click the Audio tab and select "USB Audio Codec" for both the Input and
Output sound card.  If using Windows Vista/7/8.x/10, then you'll need to select
"Microphone - USB Audio Codec" for "Input" and "Speakers - USB Audio Codec"
for "Output".
Click the OK button to close the Settings window.
Set the "PWR" slider on the WSJT-X main window (right-hand side of screen)
to the second notch from the top (roughly -5.1db).  Note that if you lower this
slider too much the SignaLink USB will NOT switch into transmit!  See details
below.
WSJT-X is a complex program so please take some time to read the WSJT-X
users guide!

That is why I set VOX on in the Software, and off on my K3. Pretty much
anything else generates an error box. What is confusing to me is that it worked
OK this way before and only fails when my daughter is watching  :-{

Steve,

I believe setting VOX on in the software will not work unless you have
VOX turned on in the K3.
You can use PTT via CAT command in the software and leave VOX turned off
in the K3.
Alternately, turn VOX on in the K3 and tell the software that you are
using VOX in the K3.

Steve,

I don't have a quick answer for you, BUT ---
Understand that the TX light on the SignaLink only says that the
SignaLink itself is producing audio.

It detects the audio stream in the box itself and sets its TX light on.

If the K3 TX light does not turn on, then investigate the station setup
is initiating transmit. There are several possible ways (use only one
or the K3 may get locked in transmit).
Are you using PTT from the Signalink?
Are you using VOX in the K3?
Are you using PTT via CAT command from the software?
Something else?

[Elecraft] What to check when FT8 won't transmit (K3, Signalink)

2018-06-05 Thread Stephen Dubin via Elecraft

Just to see whether I like it (I didn't), I set up for FT8 with K3, Signalink
and WSJT on Windows 10. I installed Meinberg when I had trouble receiving. I
made a shipload of contacts and decided to go back to CW. Recently my daughter
(KM4UDF) who is recently licensed said, "Aw C'mon Daddy, show me FT8."  I used
same settings as before -- as well as I can remember. I double checked using
the "Wilhelm Doctrine."   "Time,is"  says my system time is good. Software has
VOX on and K3 has VOX off. Receiving (on 40 meters) went well with many CQ's
and QSO's reported on the program. When I hit the "TUNE" tab on WSJT, the red
"TX" light will light on the Signalink box, but K3 will not transmit. Changing
position of "POWER" slider on software doesn't help. Changing MIC on K3 made no
difference.Antenna SWR reads 1.1:1, Signalink has not been unplugged from K3
since time everything worked. Other modes (CW, Sideband) work fine.
My main question is, "If receiving works OK and Signalink "fires" when TUNE
button on software is hit, what (hopefully systematic) steps should I take to
see why K3 does not transmit now; although it did before. Is this a special
curse on folks who swear off FT8 and then try to return?

Re: [Elecraft] FT8 DXpedition Mode test.

2018-03-08 Thread Stephen Shearer
Don, OK I had to test this again and look at the manual.  I "thought" I
tried shift but brain cells are getting old...

I used fldigi to see a nice 0-4K audio spectrum.
I went to 40m (shouldn't matter), set DATA A, set BW=4.0, Adjusted FC
from low to high 1.28 to 1.64 with *1.5.
FC ... If I change it over its full range the lowest it goes is
375HZ (and that may be 10dB down?).

If I change BW=3.0, same but High end varies.
With BW=4.0, only high end varies.
If I make BW=1.7, I can move low end up but not below the ~400HZ...

I have latest firmware, MCU 02.90 DSP 01.52

If I use USB...  BW=4.0 FC=*1.5  I have an audio range from 200Hz to
3500Hz ??

I even went back and zeroed my RX EQ.
I guess I can't use DATA A with FT8 in DXpedition Mode.
It won't matter with other modes as only DXpedition mode needs RX at
300Hz...

And I may have been the only one using a KX3 for the test?
*I think the answer is that the problem is not **with me, its firmware
limits...*

The WSJT-X software does other "tricks" to move the TX freq keeping it
within the TX bandpass, 1500Hz +/- 500Hz (it looked like...)  Note, not
relative to "issue", just info.

BTW, thanks for all you do for the Elecraft community!

The K3/K3S has the same behavior, but it is not a problem.

[Elecraft] FT8 DXpedition Mode test.

2018-03-07 Thread Stephen Shearer

1.   I had fun.
2.   I read the Guide before, during, and after the test.
3.   I started to 20m and was confused.  Partly because I was not
hearing the FOX and was seeing stations below 1K with "R-12" reports.
4. On 20m, it did not help that XE1GK was calling CQ on top of W1/KH7Z
   +/- 1HZ (I did see KH7Z a few times with reports).  Being in W3 I
would not "expect" to hear a W1, but the XE1 was -1 to -15 didn't help.
5.   I saw CQ on 30m.  Since I could see both sides of the QSO, I was
"starting" to figure out the change in freq to below 1K.
6.   On 30m, now that I was calling, I figured out the Split Operation
   Rig/Fake It set-up.  I changed to "Rig".
7.   On 30m, I realized, now that I could "see" the FOX that my RX
   bandpass did not cover 300Hz.
8.   My KX3 with "Data A" has a wide bandpass of 400Hz to 3500Hz and
shifting the RX down was not going to work with the software shift
   for the report, I "guess"...
9.   I changed my KX3 to USB, removed CMP and RX/TX audio EQ.  The
lower RX cut-off would receive the FOX on the assigned freq.
10.   I looked at the KX3 manual C5 for a way to set the passband low
end cutoff while in Data A mode.  Nothing found.  Does the K3s have
   the same problem?
11.   On 40m, I now knew what was going on...  I heard the CQ, The FOX
answered my GRID and the software moved me between 300Hz and 900HZ
(the manual does say that) but until it happens, I was not sure what
it meant. The FOX never "RR73" 'd me.  I was running 10 watts.
12.   On 80m it was the same as 40m.  I was running 15w (with a fan
blowing on the heatsink).  I never finished a QSO.
13.   I had fun and thank you for the DXpedition effort.
14.   I need to see what Elecraft has to say about the "Data A" low freq
   cut-off setting...

Re: [Elecraft] PX3 & thumb drive... SD card works

2018-02-25 Thread Stephen Shearer

PX3 doesn't "seem" to have a size issue...  aka my 128M vs 16G thumb drive.
As I said I would, I tried an SD card (Class 10 and 16G) with a USB
interface.
The SD card worked ("M" showed on the screen of the PX3) for both the
USB2.0 and the USB3.0 interface device.
SO, something is different between the SD card with an USB interface and
the USB "drive" even if both are FAT32 formatted...

See if "we" get any input from Elecraft as I also CC'd a PX3 developer.

I had an issue where a thumb drive was needed to upgrade firmware in
an Agilent digital scope but we didn't have appropriate thumb drives,
so I took a 1 TB USB spinning hard drive and partitioned with the

Re: [Elecraft] PX3 & thumb drive...

2018-02-25 Thread Stephen Shearer
Yes, not class 10 takes longer...  My thumb drives ARE formatted FAT32,
I checked.  My OLD drive that works is a USB2.0 the new drive is a
USB3.0 speed disk.  YES - I read the manual before I started this topic.
NOW, the class 10 comment in the manual... class 10 is marked on SD
cards.  I am wondering IF the software developer is using an adapter
with an SD card rather than an "thumb drive".

*I have SD/adapter(s) and I will give it a try.*  I just like having
fewer parts to loose when portable...

The problem isn't the speed of the thumb drive (aka class 10) but that
the USB 3.0 and larger USB 2.0 thumb drives DON'T get "seen" by the
PX3/P3 - no "M" on the screen.

73, steve WB3LGC

What is a class 10 SD card?   BTW, my USB3.0 "Flash Drive" is 150 MB/s
(read speed? up to...) and SD cards and USB thumb drives are not rated
the same - different association.

Answered by The WikiAnswers^® Community
Currently, the SD Association recognizes two Speed Classes: "Speed
Class" and "UHS Speed Class." Speed Class applies to SD, miniSD,
microSD, SDHC, miniSDHC, microSDHC, SDXC and microSDXC cards. These are
denoted by a class number within a C-shaped logo. The higher the class
number, the faster the card. In order to bear the SD Speed Class logo,
card manufacturers have to adhere to the minimum standards set out by
the SD Association.
Class 2 is the slowest SD card speed. Class 2 has a write speed of about
2 Mb/s and is suitable for standard definition video recording. Class 4
and Class 6 have write speeds of about 4 Mb/s and 6 Mb/s, respectively,
and can be used for HD video recording. These three classes of SD cards
are designed to operate under the normal bus interface.
*Class 10 SD cards have write speeds of 10 Mb/s and up and are designed
to operate under the high speed bus interface. *

Note the Class 10 reference. There are many that are not class 10. You can

Re: [Elecraft] PX3 & thumb drive...

2018-02-24 Thread Stephen Shearer
It isn't a problem of file name..  The PX3 won't see the new thumb
drives.  It reads the OLD drive just fine.  I don't have a problem with
the name as I edit with the contest name in the filename and then
copy/edit to the one the PX3 reads.  works great, except 16G drives - no
go.  73 steve

There was a bug in the last firmware update that has not been fixed. The

that it tries to read the data back in from. Until the firmware is
corrected, you need to manually edit the saved file name to have it match
the expected read from name. It has been a while since I did this, but I
will pull my thumb drive and post the two different names shortly.

[Elecraft] Looking for a small VGA monitor for the P3 available in UK

2018-01-26 Thread Stephen Prior
I have recently rearranged my operating position and have lost the space
where my old Sony 15 inch monitor used to act as an external display for
the P3. Has anyone bought (and are happy with) a much smaller VGA 1024x768
monitor, say 7 or 8 inches in size? There are plenty on amazon.co.uk but I
am suspicious as to their quality and also their immunity to nearby RF
fields.

Suggestions welcome, but looking to resource this from UK based stock and
only models that have actually been tried out and found to be okay.

Thanks and 73,

[Elecraft] [KX2] Cannot turn off switch cw tones

2017-11-20 Thread Stephen Prior
I was playing with the new features in 2.81 and enabled the tones by
holding down APF (plus Rate and A/B) at start-up. All works great, the
double tap on PTT gives the freq. etc. However, having established that it
works, I'm now stuck in the mode. I can go into Setup and turn SW tones to
off but when I turn the KX2 off and then on again, the SW tones is now set
back to 20!

I have read everything I can find, but I cannot see how to get out of this
so that I have no tones of any description.

Any advice gratefully received!

Re: [Elecraft] Wire size for the ground on the KX2

2017-06-17 Thread Stephen Hanes
Fred,

I guess that I was making the assumption [not good!] that the input would be
protected by a gas-tube discharge device, such as those made by Alpha-Delta ---
I try to always use one of these at the input of any radio. Of course, what is
still needed is to discharge the excess charge, and that is what I addressed in
my first note.

But be wary however. That, in itself, may not and often does not offer any
protection at all. Each little charge from rain or snow static may be
minuscule, but they charge the input capacitance of the device in the radio and
eventually it breaks downbetween the input and the chassis.

Just grounding the chassis or ground plane on a PCB does nothing to change
that, it's the charge across the input that matters.

I believe, but do not know for sure, that Elecraft designs all have a static
bleed across the antenna connection. Possibly someone who knows can enlighten
all the rest of us. If you want to be sure and don't want to take your radio
apart, wire a 100K-200K 1/8 W resistor across a

PL-259 [or BNC]. Put a T-adapter onto the radio, resistor on one leg, antenna
on the other.

A number of years ago, our Cal QSO crew in Alpine county fried two PROIII's
from snow static for lack of a bleed. Total ham experience on the crew was in
the 300 year range ... You'd think someone would havethought of it. [:-)

Re: [Elecraft] Wire size for the ground on the KX2

2017-06-17 Thread Stephen Hanes
Jim Brown,

Another reason for connecting a ground wire to ‘mother earth’ would be a
variation on your reason, and that would be to provide a means to discharge
excess charge (‘static electricity’) before it can damage your equipment. This
buildup of charge can occur if the antenna is subjected to only moderate winds,
even if no thunderstorm is nearby.
