Re: [Emc-users] G Code Generators
Hello, now it works, just three suggestions: 1) add spindle speed field and add a M3 SXXX at the beginning. If we don't start the spindle, facing is not possible ;) 2) Change the Cutting Speed IPM lable in Cutting Speed IPM or mm/min so if one is using mm knows that the field indicates mm/min and not inches/min. Maybe Feedrate is better than Cutting Speed. 3) Maybe you could add a field Safety Height, so the first movement will not be for example G0 Z0.1000 but G0 ZSafetyHeight, the second move will be for example X-1.1000 Y0. so the tool will reach the initial point at the safety height, after that you can give a G0 Z0.1000 and a G1 Z-1.000 to go to the defined depth. There is a fourth suggestion, but it is only a graphic idea. Would be nice to have images that show what are the parameteres you are setting. When you click on a field the image changes and shows you what is that field, something like this: http://imagebin.org/12032 http://imagebin.org/12031 Those are taken from EdgeCam. Nice work, I think more of them could be made and they could be very useful to do all those small milling tasks that are too simple to use a complete Cam and annoying if manual programmed. Maybe I could help you to program some of these. After about a year of development, many new features are available in this release. The documentation (particularly the HTML documentation) is greatly improved, and a partial translation of the documentation into the french language is available. Please join us on IRC in the usual place (irc.freenode.net / #emc) if you have any questions, or just to help us celebrate! I am the release manager for the emc 2.2.x release cycle. As a result, you'll need to add my gpg key to the list of keys that will authenticate packages on your system. Do so by issuing these commands in the terminal: gpg --keyserver pgpkeys.mit.edu --recv-key 96935D7D gpg -a --export 96935D7D | sudo apt-key add - after the second step you will be prompted for your password in order to run the administrative command apt-key add. If you don't perform this step, you will get a warning about unauthenticated software when installing bugfix releases. Because (minor) changes to configuration files are needed, your existing install will not automatically be updated to 2.2. If you want to run 2.2, you will have to change to the EMC 2.2 repository by following these instructions: Run System/Administration/Synaptic Package Manager Go to Settings/Repositories In the list of Channels are two lines for linuxcnc.org. For each of them: Select the line and click Edit on the Components line, change emc2 or emc2.1 to emc2.2 Click OK Close the Software Preferences window Click Reload as instructed Click Mark All Upgrades Click Apply A new EMC 2.2 Live CD will be released in the next week or so. Re: [Emc-users] Max speed too fast
Well, it is hard to say, I think there is a limit to the base period (at least I saw that in my machines) and it is about 1 to 15000 ns. If I decrease it, everything froze. Said that, an approximated formula that gives you an idea of the needed base period is: BASE_PERIOD = 1 / ( INPUT_SCALE * MAX_VELOCITY * 2 ) * 10^9 The value of INPUT_SCALE * MAX_VELOCITY is the max number of step per second you will need, you double this value to be sure you will be able to obtain the step per second you need. The inverse is the time in second between a step and the successive at the max speed doubled. You multiply for 10^9 to obtain ns. With your data, you should be ok with a Base-Period of 12500, and that should be ok for your machine. Dont' forget to update the STEPGEN_MAXVEL value accordingly to the MAX_VEL value. It should be a little more than the MAX_VEL. Also remember that in the formula above, you should put the STEPGEN_MAXVEL value and not the MAX_VEL... I hope this helps. When I set the max speed to 1.0 (I think that is 1 ips or 60 ipm) I get an error saying that the velocity is too high. I the motor/encoder/gecko drive require 2000 steps per rev and the lead screw is 5 tpi and I have a 4 to one timing belt pulley reduction between the motor and the axis so the input scale is 2000 x 4 x 5 or 40,000 steps per inch. This requires 40,000 steps per second for 1 inch per second. I am using a 2 GHZ machine and I think I can get a higher step per second output by changing the base period and the associated periods but I am a little fuzzy on the relationship. I saw this explained here sometime in the last few months but I can't find it in my inbox. How do I relate max steps per second to base period? What is the minimum base period for a given cpu clock speed? Can someone refresh me on maximum speeds and minimum base periods etc. ? BTW I really don't need 60 ipm but it looked like a good max speed and the servo will do it with a squarewave generator input to the gecko drive. I could live with half that or so as the max traverse speed. Thanks, Cecil - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc. Still grepping through log files to find problems? Stop. Re: [Emc-users] Interactive machining
However, I see application for the much simpler Interactive work. My example would be a 3 axis mill, om which I want to do a simple set of tasks like face off some stock, drill a bolt circle, then maybe mill a couple circular pockets around it. Yes, one could go to the CAD system, draw it all, then process it to Gcode, then load and run that. Actually you can do it very well using python and the filterfeature of EMC...just write a GUI with tkinter to create what you need (like G-wiz) and write some code in python to generate the g-code and sent it to the output...it will be received from EMC2 and you will have your work ready to be machined. I've tried it and it's usefu (I've written a small GUI to create NURBS curves and send them to EMC2 for experimental purpose)l. I'm not very good at python yet...so my GUI surely sucks...but it does what I need for now, it will be improved when I've the time to improve my python skills. A very good example is the script holecircle.py by Jeff Epler, find about it at the end of this page (Program filters section): http://www.linuxcnc.org/docs/html/gui/axis/index.html the script is inlcuded in the official version of EMC2 if I remember well. Re: [Emc-users] Interactive machining
I tried and used the TCL preprocessor and I think it does the same things as O-Word, but it has far more possibilities and it is really more readable than O-Word, but O-word is read internally by the interpreter while with the TCL preprocessor and the filter for .gcl files a complete G-code program will be sent to EMC2. I think that the point is not to have a command to move directly the machine, (like $emc-move({ X = 0})) because the same result can be achieved using the common G0 or G1 g-code commands in the preprocessor, I think that the real point is, as told also by Sven, to have a way to get feedback from emc2. The ability to get a feedback from EMC2 (or HAL) while working, would permit the interactive machining as requested by Ron. for example: if (hal.pin.0 == true) G0 X20 else if (hal.pin.1 == true) G0 Z20 ecc.ecc. You can also use the NML messages for issuing MDI commands to feed your program in line-by-line. (I just verified that, at least in the development version of emc 2, this doesn't kill blending altogether, though it's likely that blending degrades more quickly when fed by MDI than by file) Personally, I lean towards using filters because then I benefit from the preview plot. Using tcl as a gcode preprocessor: http://axis.unpy.net/01167315565 To make .gcl files openable in axis, put this in your inifile: PROGRAM_EXTENSION .gcl TCL-preprocessed gcode gcl = /path/to/gcode.tcl and make gcode.tcl executable While these preprocessors look really useful, they don't support what Ron thinks of, which would be a programming language which is able to feed commands to emc2 as well as get feedback from emc2. Assuming a perl binding, this could mean =my $emc = new CNC::EMC2; $emc-move({ X = 0, Y = 0, Z = 10 }); $emc-straight_probe( { Z = 0 } ); if ($emc-probe_tripped) { printf(%d %d %d\n,$emc-trip_x,$emc-trip_y,$emc-trip_z); } else { # do something else } my $dialog=new Dialog; # do whatever is needed to open a dialog which allows jogging # of all axes as well as direct entering of target positions, # to select {max, min}[xyz] surface_scan($minx,$miny,$minz,$maxx,$maxy,$maxz); ... = See the difference? _Many_ people, including me, are certainly more comfortable at writing complex code in a more readable language than G-Code. And at that, probably also a language easier to understand at first glance that TCL (I don't understand your gcode.tcl filter script, even though I can read C, C++, Pascal, Ruby, PHP, Perl, lua, Basic, ... easily). Speaking of the above: lua would probably be a really good choice if you want to implement a scripting language inside emc2. Regards, Sven - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc. Re: [Emc-users] [geckodrive] EMC vs. Mach3 Constant Velocity??
Hi, You should try the continuos mode using G64 P- in the g-code program. With the parameter P you can specify (optionally) a requested tolerance. The NIST specification says: In continuous mode, sharp corners of the path may be rounded slightly so that the feed rate may be kept up So I think this is what you need. I'm also modifying the EMC2 source code in order to let it accept a new G-code that defines nurbs curves on plane. Those will be approximated by biarcs, as suggested first by Jeff Epler. Biarcs are couple of tangent arcs. Each biarc is tangent to the following, this results in a curve with continuous tangent, allowing a high feedrate than small segments. The modify is still a work in progress... Hi, then try to do show pin from halcmd and see if the pin halui.program.run pin exist. It is possible that some of the halui pins you see in the documentation are not yet available in the official release but only in the last development version. Re: [Emc-users] halui.program.run?
Hi, First, in your .ini file, I think you've to add the line HALUI = halui just below the line [HAL], so you will have: [HAL] HALUI = halui # The run script first uses halcmd to execute any HALFILE # files, and then to execute any individual HALCMD commands. # # list of hal config files to run through halcmd # files are executed in the order in which they appear HALFILE =core_stepper.hal HALFILE =standard_pinout.hal HALFILE =halvcp.hal This because the hal files are executed in the order in wich they appear, and I think the same happens with halui, so you're trying to execute standard_pinout.hal before you've the halui pins you're using in it. Second, in your pinout.hal, note that in the commands linksp, linkps, the suffix ps or sp means signal-to-pin or pin-to-signal so when you use them be careful on which order you put the names after. For example, the line linkps program-run = halui.program.run tries to connect a pin to a signal but you put in the order a signal and after a pin. Also, remember that the command net, needs a name for a signal to use to connect two pins. So for example in the line net parport.1.pin-12-in-not halui.program.run the signal name is missing. Try to add this line to your standard_pinout.hal file and remove/comment all others regarding program run: net runsignal parport.1.pin-12-in-not halui.program.run try and see if that work. Also, it is a very good idea to update to the 2.1.5 release instead to use the old 2.1 Regards, Manfredi My websites: www.m24-pro.com www.emc2cnc.altervista.org From: Alfred Smart [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: Alfred Smart [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Manfredi Leto [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [Emc-users] halui.program.run? Looks exactly like I would want it to work. It would be nice if this could be automated in M06 handling if no tool changer is defined, but any working recipe would work for me I guess. Hi Sven, I've added this scheme to the emc2 cvs trunk. I can't test it right now but maybe I can set up something one of these days. G43 with an H index -1 is now a transient tool whose offsets are specified on the G43 line. The length offset is specified with the K word (and X offset with I word for lathes). So G43 H-1 K0.5 would do the same thing as G43 H3 if tool 3 has a length of 0.5 in the tool table. Like I described above I think this will let you use probing to measure and set up length compensation for a newly inserted tool in a fairly straightforward way. (Since H-1 was previously disallowed, this will not break any existing programs.) Re: [Emc-users] writing a new device driver
The first is how to make a new configuration file visible when first starting the emc script (./emc) in the configuration browser. I copied the standard stepper files (under the configs/stepper directory) into a new directory configs/myConfig, but they are not visible. if you copy a configuration file in the /home/../emc2/configs it will be available in the configuration browser without changing other things. EMC2.1 should ask if you want to copy a sample configuration file in your home directory in order to be able to modify it. If you want it in your own directory, you can add the directoryt in the path that you find in the emc script. But, for my experience, when you modify the script, it will be changed every time you make an upgrade for a new release of emc2, so it is a bit annoying to re-modify it every time. regards, Manfredi _ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! [Emc-users] jog-scale question
Hello, why if I set a value for jog-scale from a .hal file, using for example: setp axis.0.jog-scale 0.1 when I start EMC2 and Axis, if I use hal meter to look at axis.0.jog-scale pin its value is 0...and external jog doesn't work. Now using Show Hal configuration I can change the value of the pin, for example to 0.1 and now external jog works. Is there a way to set the jog-scale value from the .hal file so that it remains the same after emc2 starts? If not, how could I set the jog-scale value? maybe using PyVCP? Re: [Emc-users] Via motherboard
Hello I have used a ITX (smaller than ATX) board with a VIA 800 MHz. I can say that with the VIA CPU the system with Ubuntu and EMC2 was at its limit. After I replaced the VIA CPU with a PIII 733 I purchased on ebay (inexpensive...5 euro or something like that) and now the system with EMC2 run much much faster. Now I think I will replace the PIII 733 with a PIII 1000 when I will find one at very low price... So my opinion is, if you want to buy one of these VIA based motherboard, try at least the new CPUs more than 1 GHz. for example, this one is a ITX with a 1.3GHz VIA CPU http://www.mini-itx.it/product_info.php?info=p106_VIA-Epia-SP13000-LVDS.html I think an ATX would cost less, specially if you find it on ebay. regards, Manfredi My website: www.m24-pro.com From: Sepehr Kiani [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: Enhanced Machine Controller (EMC) emc-users@lists.sourceforge.net To: emc-users@lists.sourceforge.net Subject: [Emc-users] Via motherboard Date: Mon, 12 Feb 2007 13:16:14 -0500 Hi, Has anyone tried one of these boards with EMC? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813185043 It's cheap and I can cram it into my controller box easily. thanks, -- = Sepehr (Sep) Kiani, Ph.D. Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://pergatory.mit.edu/skiani = - Using Tomcat but need to do more? [Emc-users] Using Program Filters with EMC2 and Axis.
Hi, I would like to use the emc2 program filter feature... I've read the axis documentations here: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/html/gui/axis/index.html In the program filter section there is an example with a script (holecircle.py) that should create g-code for drilling a series of holes along the circumference of a circle. I've downloaded the script holecircle.py, I've added the following lines to my .ini file: [FILTER] PROGRAM_EXTENSION = .py Python Script py = python At this point I tried to open the script using Axis, but nothing worked, the script was simply displayed in the Axis text area. So I wrote to Jeff Epler who told me that it doesn't work because this program filter feature will came with the new version of EMC, the 2.1. So, thank to Jeff who really helped me I've downloaded and compiled the beta version of EMC2.1 (called pre-2.1). I tried it, I was able to start all GUIs like mini, tkemc etc...but not Axis. Anyway, now I've read in the EMC user manual chapter 8 (USING THE AXIS GRAPHICAL INTERFACE) precisely in 8.8.1 that program filters can be used, so I just added to the .ini file the lines (different form those in the Axis documentation...): [EMC] PROGRAM_FILTER = python PROGRAM_EXTENSION = *.py Python Script I tried to start the EMC (thr official version 2.0.5) and I tried to open the holecircle.py script with Axis. Hi, I'm using a LV-602 mini itx board by commell, bought used on ebay 50 EUR: http://www.commell.com.tw/Product/SBC/LV-602.HTM VIA C3 cpu at 800 MHz and 256 Mb RAM. The good thing is that the cpu is not soldered on the board but is mounted on a 370 type socket, so you can change it and mount a PIII up to 1.1 GHz (they are cheap now on ebay...). I run linux ubuntu with emc2 live version (in persistent mode) booting from a 1Gb USB pen without any problem. I've tested the compact flash boot in another embedded system and it works nice, better than the USB (faster...). So my next step is to buy a CF-IDE adapter and a 1Gb or 2Gb CF to use it on my board. I'm not a linux expert, but with the help of other people on forums and other websites everything went well. CN13000's only problem is that the parallel port is on a connector inside so you end up with a ribbon cable snaking out the side ;) -- Lester Caine - G8HFL - L.S.Caine Electronic Services - http://home.lsces.co.uk Model Engineers Digital Workshop - http://home.lsces.co.uk/ModelEngineersDigitalWorkshop/ Treasurer - Firebird Foundation Inc. - http://www.firebirdsql.org/index.php - Take Surveys.
