Well, I think my office is a real version, hmmm. You gots me wondering now

I would assume it is a real version wouldn't you? It is a Dell Inspiron 1545

I am not sure about that one! I usually save my ppt as an outline which is
RTF format. I was thinking, is you office a real version or a shadowed
copy for a school or office which actually is not the whole office sweet?
It is like microsoft works or something because I had that problem when I
had my computer for school. They did not give us real office sweets. I
had to ask them to put MSoffice on my computer. Heather - Original

I did see the conversion for .RTF, but for some reason or another and not
just with the powerpoints but with any document; I try and save it in a
.RTF format and it refuses to take the extension. If I could get the
extension and format to take then I would try that. Do you or anyone else
have any clues as to why the .RTF file extension will not take?

What we have been doing and it is on my accomodation plan is the
instructors have been having to convert the Powerpoint into a readable
format. My Spanish instructor last semester I believe saved the
Powerpoints going through the save as option into an outline format
which was readable in a word document. I am not quite sure how he
accomplished this, but I had no problems with that format and no other
assistive tools were necessary. I do not have Kerswell or anything of

Good evening. I am a student as well, and use PPT's on a routine
basis.

You have several options; the best option is to scan it using either
Kurzweil or Open Book. If you don't have either of those programs, I
suggest you have the school help you obtain one. There are cheaper
options,
from companies such as Nuance, that will allow you to take a PPT file
and
turn it into a Word file, say, which you can then read. It will do
this,

maintaining all the layout and graphical information.
I can help with steps in any or all of these solutions, please let me
know

what options are available to you.
Warmly,
Melissa
P.S. It will be important to find a working solution for this issue,
as you

will encounter power points almost every day.

Dear blind-inter...@amazon.com subscriber,

Amazon.com is releasing a new version of Kindle for PC that adds accessibility
features designed for blind and low-vision customers.

Kindle for PC with Accessibility Plugin is a free, downloadable application for
your Windows PC. It provides the following accessibility features:
text-to-speech reading with adjustable voice settings, voice-guided menu

With this software, for the first time ever, the entire collection of English
language books in the Kindle Store can be read aloud. With over 750,000 English
language titles, Amazon offers the largest selection of accessible ebooks. In
order to use the text-to-speech feature, an external screen reader program must
be installed and running on the Windows PC.

The free download is available at www.amazon.com/kindle/accessibility.

There is a Firefox add-on called ePub reader that is
Accessible with Jaws. I use it all the time to read ePub formatted e-books.
I believe too that this works on the mobile browser application as well. So
in theory, you could use it to read books on your mobile device. I haven't
played with the mobile side of things, but you could always give it a shot.
Also, all the Apple I-devices can read e-books with VoiceOver if you want to
go that root.

Please, don’t assume it works by our design. We have a different view on an
application being accessible. The Kindle PC application (menu and dialogs)
is accessible with the Screen Reader, the books themselves however, are not.
The books (those which the publishers have allowed), are read using Text To
Speech provided by Kindle. In the case of other books, the application is
still accessible (menu and dialogs), but the books are not at all.

The quality of this speech from the Text To Speech they provide and the lack
of control leaves much to be desired. We have expressed to Amazon and
Kindle, that screen reader users would like to use their screen reader for
speech, Braille, and control of navigation. This current solution, while a
commendable effort, is very misleading to say the least. For those of you
try it out, I encourage users to try it and then point out your opinions to
them directly.

Regards,
Eric

How do you arrive at the conclusion that you are sending attachments? The
reason I am asking is that some anti-virus programs sometimes indicate that
email messages have attachments when they in fact do not. So, that gives
rise to the question of what anti-virus program you are using? I recall

[JAWS-Users] Further Problems With PPT format and Converting

2011-01-19 Thread Josh
Friends,
I tried the format in which Greg suggested Outline. I followed step - by -
step what was advised. However, I have converted two PPT documents and both of
them return four readable pages. I know that one of the Powerpoints has fifty -
five slides to it and the other has I think 19 slides. I sent the converted
documents to my instructor for review, but with it only giving me four pages on
both I feel that some information is being left out. The following is the steps
in which I did.

Steps for converting the PPT to Word doc.
alt f, pressed the letter u, pressed the letter h, tabbed twice to a list view,
scrolled down to outline format and then tabbed to ok.

I tried it both with pressing enter while outline was highlighted and when
outline was highlighted I also tried the tab method to ok. Either way it
returns a four page result. Am I missing a step to get the full document to
convert? As always any help offered is greatly appreciated. Take care

P.S. This does seem like the method in which my instructor last semester used.

Here is a new and presumably Jaws accessible application.

I would prefer a fully portable e-book reading device such as my sighted
colleagues have available to them and will probably so inform them, I
don't much fancy sitting at a computer for my recreational reading but
there may be many on this list who will find this of interest and value.

 Dear blind-inter...@amazon.com subscriber,

Amazon.com is releasing a new version of Kindle for PC that adds
accessibility features designed for blind and low-vision customers.

Kindle for PC with Accessibility Plugin is a free, downloadable
application for your Windows PC. It provides the following accessibility
features: text-to-speech reading with adjustable voice settings,
voice-guided menu navigation, large font sizes, high contrast reading
mode, keyboard navigation, and accessible shortcuts.

With this software, for the first time ever, the entire collection of
English language books in the Kindle Store can be read aloud. With over
750,000 English language titles, Amazon offers the largest selection of
accessible ebooks. In order to use the text-to-speech feature, an
external screen reader program must be installed and running on the
 Windows PC.

The free download is available at www.amazon.com/kindle/accessibility.

We welcome your feedback at kindle-pc-accessibility-feedb...@amazon.com.

 Sincerely,
 The Kindle Team

2011-01-19 Thread Mark
Hi Victoria,
Typing alt t will bring up the tools in IE. Then arrow down to pop up
blocker submenu and press enter. From here you can unblock the pop
up.

God bless,
Mark
 Dear Victoria,

I am sorry, I am not familiar with Windows 7. Neither am I all that
 familiar
 with adjusting Internet Explorer.

As I remember you can use the Jaws cursor when you hear the pop-up sound
 and
move with it to near the top of the screen where there is a place to right
click and allow the pop-up and the download however you would be better to
go through the Security settings of Internet Explorer I think it is near
 or
at the bottom of the tools Menu. I can't tell you exactly under which tab
but it is in the security settings. Enable pop-ups there before you go to
the Site to download the application.

You might put this out to the general list, I am pretty sure someone will
 be
used to this sort of problem and be able to give more precise
 instructions.

Hi Dale, Thank you very much for this notification! I had no idea that
 this accessible Kindle software exited.

May be you could help me? When I tried to download it, it was blocked by
 my Pop Up blocker.

Do you know how to tell the Windows XP3 Internet Explorer 7, to allow a
 download that has been blocked?

Is there any keyboard command we can use, as soon as we hear the Block
 sound, to continue the download?

 Many thanks! Vicky

Not all electronic books are created equal in the site of the cyber gods.

Kindle is a format not necessarily the same as other e-book formats.

It is the old Betamax/VHS wars all over again.

access to all of the audio books they all claim to support.

I expect the same is true with e-book readers.

Is Epub the same format as Kindle? Are all titles available to ePub
equivalent to those available to Kindle?

Will we, the consumer ever actually get what we want or will we continue to
accept and actually purchase what they, the providers insist we should have?

And when will we, the blind, have access to the promise of universal

The universality of binary 1s and 0s is being very deliberately subverted

Kindle will certainly hear from me on the subject but it is a message which

There is a Firefox add-on called ePub reader that is
Accessible with Jaws. I use it all the time to read ePub formatted e-books.
I believe too that this works on the mobile browser application as well. So
in theory, you could use it to read books on your mobile device. I haven't
played with the mobile side of things, but you could always give it a shot.
Also, all the Apple I-devices can read e-books with VoiceOver if you want to
go that root.

Please, don't assume it works by our design.

For those of you
try it out, I encourage users to try it and then point out your opinions to
them directly.

ePub is pretty ubiquitous. You're going to find it with pretty much all the
online booksellers. Amazon pushes Kindle hard, but it's definitely not the
only e-book format out there. They just try to make it seem as though it is.

There are also a bunch of e-book format converters out there free and for a
price that can do the job of converting particular formats. With different
degrees of success of course. Some more accessible with jaws than others
too.

Is there something I need to turn off. I'm anxious to see if this message
sends attachment. Can anyone help please.

Re: [JAWS-Users] my aim program is frozen

2011-01-19 Thread Siobhan
Hi James. See if you can go an download the latest aim. Also, kill the
process. Go into task manager by using control shift escape. Arrow over to
processes. There's a list view. You're looking for aim.exe delete, hit yes,
then try and either opening aim again, or installing the latest version.
Note: if you kill the process but it's there, hit delete again. If it gives
a can not determine process error something to that effect, the process has
already been terminated. Hope that helps.

Are you sure you closed AIM? If you cannot get it to close, launch the
Windows Task Manager (Alt-Control-Delete), scroll to AIM on the Applications

should be able to uninstall it.

Here in lies the problem though.

Not all electronic books are created equal in the site of the cyber gods.

Kindle is a format not necessarily the same as other e-book formats.

It is the old Betamax/VHS wars all over again.

Same with Audio books. I am discovering that not all of our MP3 reading
solutions, Victor Stream, Plextalk, Olympus DM4 so far tested give good
access to all of the audio books they all claim to support.

I expect the same is true with e-book readers.

Is Epub the same format as Kindle? Are all titles available to ePub
equivalent to those available to Kindle?

Will we, the consumer ever actually get what we want or will we continue to
accept and actually purchase what they, the providers insist we should have?

And when will we, the blind, have access to the promise of universal
accessibility that the printing press now four or more centuries ago gave
seeing people who only needed to take the initiative to learn to read.

The universality of binary 1s and 0s is being very deliberately subverted
with the specific intent to limit who has access to written material. This
is not the coincidental barriers of things like Adobe PDF but a deliberate
restriction.

Kindle will certainly hear from me on the subject but it is a message which
requires far broader broadcast.

This goes around and around and around. Tape was thought to kill the music
industry then the cassette then the Internet. Video home equipment was going
to kill the cinema and so Internet sharing and pirating while the movies
make more money than ever before.

Regards,
Eric

2011-01-19 Thread Steve

Hmmm,

You actually need to send the actual word document itself as an attachment.
I'm not sure if Outlook 2010 has an automated way to handle those documents.

If not, when you copy the body of the word document, i.e. with the document
opened, select the entire document with control-a then copy it to your
clipboard with control-c, you could then create a new email message and
paste the text contents in with control-v. When you do it that way, you are
just sending the body of the document either as .html or as .txt, depending
on how you have your email client configured to send outgoing messages.

What difference does it make which keystroke you use to launch Windows Task

The best way to open the task manager is to press control+shift+escape and

Are you sure you closed AIM? If you cannot get it to close, launch the
Windows Task Manager (Alt-Control-Delete), scroll to AIM on the
Applications tab and tab to the end task button to force it to shut down.
Then you should be able to uninstall it.

hello Jane, Betsy and lisa:
I have no idea what my coworker is talking about after I perform CTRL f and
type in the search term and boxes/squares appear.
However, after I select all or back space and delete the text the
squares/boxes disappears.
Am I typing to fast in the search field and accidentally putting in squares?
Can you do that with jaws on the internet in a search box?
Anyways, remains a mystery to me because why would squares appear.

Dear Victoria,

I am sorry, I am not familiar with Windows 7. Neither am I all that
familiar
with adjusting Internet Explorer.

As I remember you can use the Jaws cursor when you hear the pop-up sound
and
move with it to near the top of the screen where there is a place to
right
click and allow the pop-up and the download however you would be better
to

go through the Security settings of Internet Explorer I think it is near
or
at the bottom of the tools Menu. I can't tell you exactly under which tab
but it is in the security settings. Enable pop-ups there before you go to
the Site to download the application.

You might put this out to the general list, I am pretty sure someone will
be
used to this sort of problem and be able to give more precise
instructions.

It provides the following
accessibility

features: text-to-speech reading with adjustable voice settings,
voice-guided menu navigation, large font sizes, high contrast reading
mode, keyboard navigation, and accessible shortcuts.

With this software, for the first time ever, the entire collection of
English language books in the Kindle Store can be read aloud. With over
750,000 English language titles, Amazon offers the largest selection of

Friends,
I tried the format in which Greg suggested Outline. I followed step -
by - step what was advised. However, I have converted two PPT documents
and both of them return four readable pages. I know that one of the
Powerpoints has fifty - five slides to it and the other has I think 19
slides. I sent the converted documents to my instructor for review, but
with it only giving me four pages on both I feel that some information is
being left out. The following is the steps in which I did.

Steps for converting the PPT to Word doc.
alt f, pressed the letter u, pressed the letter h, tabbed twice to a list
view, scrolled down to outline format and then tabbed to ok.

I tried it both with pressing enter while outline was highlighted and when
outline was highlighted I also tried the tab method to ok. Either way it
returns a four page result. Am I missing a step to get the full document
to convert? As always any help offered is greatly appreciated. Take care

P.S. This does seem like the method in which my instructor last semester
used.

the lack of control leaves much to be desired. We have expressed to
Amazon and Kindle, that screen reader users would like to use their
screen reader for speech, Braille, and control of navigation. This
current solution, while a commendable effort, is very misleading to
say the least. For those of you try it out, I encourage users to try
it and then point out your opinions to them directly.

Eric

Here is a new and presumably Jaws accessible application.

I would prefer a fully portable e-book reading device such as my
sighted colleagues have available to them and will probably so inform
them, I don't much fancy sitting at a computer for my recreational
reading but there may be many on this list who will find this of
interest and value.

It provides the following
accessibility features: text-to-speech reading with adjustable voice
settings, voice-guided menu navigation, large font sizes, high
contrast reading mode, keyboard navigation, and accessible shortcuts.

With this software, for the first time ever, the entire collection of
English language books in the Kindle Store can be read aloud. With
over 750,000 English language titles, Amazon offers the largest
selection of accessible ebooks. In order to use the text-to-speech
feature, an external screen reader program must be installed and
running on the Windows PC.

Re: [JAWS-Users] squares in a search box

2011-01-19 Thread Lisa Belville
Hmm, What's the difference? I've always used the control plus F command
with JAWS and IE and I get a JAWS search dialog rather than an IE dialog. I
type in what I want JAWS to search for and press enter. If it finds what I
want, I just press escape and the dialog goes away. I can use F3 or shift
plus F3 to repeat the search for the same item.

I know that the control F is used to search in IE if JAWS isn't running, so
I'm wondering if this is just duplication on behalf of JAWS or what?

Hi Kimsan,

These squares are presumably what the person sees, perhaps visual effects
or something due to the interaction of JAWS with the page. Now, there's
also JAWSKey+ctrl+f Find if you'd like to use that. Type in what you're
searching for. Press ENTER or activate the find button. if it's on the
page, it will be found. If it isn't, it won't and you'll get a bong sound
back.

Hello:

I will try to explain this some how and hope someone will understand.

This is all happening on the internet. I activated the virtual find by
evoking CTRL f. Now I typed in my search but my sighted cohort told me
there
were some boxes that needed to be deleted from the search field and that
is
why nothing is coming up for the search. Lets say I am searching for
news,
but the person says there are some boxes before news and I need to
delete

them before proceeding. What are these boxes my sighted cohort is talking

JAWSKey + ctrl + f works wherever there is a 'virtual cursor'. Ctrl+f
means different things to different programs! I'm just giving out an
alternative keystroke to do much the same job.

Actually, it does work pretty well with Jaws. The text-to-speech is a bit
elementary, much rather have Eloquence, but I've tried a few books with
success.

Please, don’t assume it works by our design. We have a different view on
an application being accessible. The Kindle PC application (menu and
dialogs) is accessible with the Screen Reader, the books themselves
however, are not. The books (those which the publishers have allowed),
are read using Text To Speech provided by Kindle. In the case of other
books, the application is still accessible (menu and dialogs), but the
books are not at all.

The quality of this speech from the Text To Speech they provide and the
lack of control leaves much to be desired. We have expressed to Amazon

solution, while a commendable effort, is very misleading to say the

[JAWS-Users] Windows 7 and possible Jaws problem

2011-01-19 Thread Trevor Dawson
Hello all,

I am running windos 7, 32 byt with the latest version of Jaws. All works
well except in the Search Menu. When in the search menu, I type what I am
looking for on the PC, all indicates what I am looking for has been found.
However, moving down with the arrow key, several items are read and then all
goes quiet. Jaws Speech will not start again for up to 10 minutes as if
another search is being conducted. On the Screen all search results is
being shown. This would indicate that Jaws is not reading what is already
there. But, the puzzling thing is, then a message will come up after I do an
Alt, Tab, which says, Please wait for the program to respond.

Has anyone had this experience? A Computer technician has watched this
happen, he can't provide any explanation. If the problem is not Jaws related
further
checks can be conducted.
Regards

Trevor.
