That could do, kind-o-ugly to have to paste all that stuff around the image to
make it work, though.

I found another solution that works fine for me, with less LaTeX code to paste.

Figure placement and rotate

Hi,

I have a document with some rather large figures. It seems this doesn't work 
well with LaTeX idea of how to place these figures. In short we disagree, so I 
want to use the "definitely here" option.

Since I also want to rotate the picture to maximuma readability of the text in 
the figure, I check rotate, but this disabled the location hint. Is there any 
way I can use both options?

The current workaround I use is to rotate just the graphics, but causes the 
figure title and graphics to have different orientation, which looks somewhat 
bad.

Thanks for your help.  I fixed the problem by both deleting the 
HiResBoundingBox line and also checking the "Clip to Bounding Box" 
option in the Graphics-->Clipping window.

Hi there,

I originally generated eps files using Matlab, and when I embed them in 
my lyx document, everything is great when I convert it into a pdf.  
Unfortunately, the original eps files were way too large, so I had to 
find a way to compress them (decreased resolution and then rasterized 
it). This resulted in the new eps file's bounding box becoming way too 
large.  I manually edited them so that the bounding box fits the image 
better, and it looks fine in GSView. When I insert it in my lyx 
document, it looks fine too in the preview.  When I go to convert it to 
a pdf, though, it results in some sort of overlapping problem where the 
figure seems to have much more whitespace and this whitespace obscures 
other figures/text around it.  Any hints on how I can fix this?

Running your own software may or may not be in violation of the user
agreement for the public access computers in some libraries - it's worth
checking.

Because of this, it might be worth lobbying libraries to install LyX
and its optional dependencies, pointing out its superiority to MS Word
for certain tasks. Admittedly though, the average library is probably
not going to see many library users use LyX, except in special cases
like where the library is frequented by clued-up academics.

It all depends what kind of writing you do. The styles that ship with 
the standard LaTeX distribution tend to be weighted heavily to the maths 
and the physical sciences, so you might want to go to your local CTAN 
mirror and check out other styles (MLA, Chicago, Harvard etc.) although 
some of these can be achieved through other styles (e.g. I use jurabib 
to emulate Chicago).

You need to click the "TeX" button and type in the LaTeX code for the

LyX in Mandrake 10.0

After upgrading to Mandrake 10.0, all my PDF files created with pdflatex 
 come out with some ugly fixed-width font (well not exactly fixed 
width, since the letter-spacing varies randomly). I'm obviously missing 
some package, but don't know what it is (not pdflatex, as that is 
installed).

Anyone else here using Mdk 10.0?

best) they've run through Word, but of course I use LyX (last semester I 
went over the top, combining all the citations from the various papers 
into one massive BibTeX file and writing a glossary and index!). While I 
was explaining how important it was that the odd-numbered pages came out 
on the right, the guy asked "How come you always give us such clean 
copy?" "It's not me, it's my software," I replied!

I'm not familiar with this package, but the general procdure in LyX is 
to go to Layout>Document>Preamble and add the line

\usepackage{name-of-your-package}

This will allow you to use any commands the package provides (though 
this will require entering raw LaTeX).  Some packages do not require any 
extra commands (e.g. \usepackage{pandora} will automatically change your 
fonts to the Pandora fonts).

I don't know, but FWIW I normally export to TeX then use a free latex2html
Perl script.
You can call latex2html from within LyX; in fact, if it's installed, LyX 
should detect it automatically. You may want to change some of the 
options, though - see the copious documentation that comes with 
latex2html.  A simpler alternative is Hevea.

Unfortunately the HTML produced by latex2html or Hevea is not up to the 
standards of HTML purists.  I'd recommend getting Tidy (which you can 
download from www.w3.org) and running it on the output, especially if 
you want "strict" HTML or XHTML.

A couple of years back I would have said it was a nice feature, but 
there are far more features with higher priority.  Now, most of the 
features I was waiting for have materialised, so if there are developers

You need to write a layout file.  It's best to start by copying the

The kind of stuff LyX can handle, like margins and alignments, goes in 
the first part, but if you want complex LaTeX stuff, it needs to be 
defined in the Preamble section.

Run Edit->Reconfigure in LyX, and the next time you run LyX your new 
layout should show up.

Help->Customisation has a section "Decalring a new text class" which is

add aCopyright environment, or start with Book (Koma-script) and edit it 
to make it behave more like Book.

Which part 'failed'?

The part where the output is decent! in Acrobat, I get a below average 
quality, even if I zoom in.

That's probably the font part.  Try changing your font to "ae" or "pslatex".

You need to find (or write) a BibTeX style file that fits your purposes, 
then you can select it from the bibliography button.  You can also 
sometimes use preamble commands to modify how the style is implemented - 
Jurabib has an impressive range.  If you don't specify a style, you get 
BibeX Plain, which uses the bracketed numbers for references.

Well, LyX isn't for everyone - I happen to think it's the best thing 
since sliced bread, but if you want something more point-and-clicky, I'd 
suggest checking out Scribus before you splash out on an expensive DTP 
program.  It doesn't have all the functionality of its commercial 
cousins, but it's getting there slowly.  I'd still recommend persisting 
for a while with LyX, though - it kind of grows on you.

As with any package, the first thing you need to do is make it available 
to LaTeX. Put it somewhere inside your LaTeX distribution (on my 
computer this is /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/ but it could be different 
on yours). Then run the command "texhash" (without the quotes) to update 
LaTeX. Note: you may need to be logged in as root/admin to do this.

Using it in LyX depends on whether it's supported by LyX.  If it is, 
then all you have to do is click Edit->Reconfigure, then restart LyX and 
you can use it just like any other document class. If it isn't, then you 
will need to put LaTeX commands in your Preamble (in LyX 1.3.* you get 
there from Layout->Document).  If there's any documnetation with the 
package, read it and see what it asks you to do.  If not, try putting

 \usepackage{parallel.sty}

in the preamble and see what happens.

It's a bug in the Mandrake RPM.  Just do "rpm -ivh --nodeps" and it

Definitely, and probably not too difficult to implement, so long as 
reLyX can handle the TeX it produces. (don't ask me to do it though - I 
know even less about C++ than Java!).  I like OO, and use it a lot for 
some things (mainly the spreadsheet and, of course, dealing with all 
those bloody Word docs people send me) but I'd still rather use LyX, 
given the choice.

LyX will detect any BibTeX styles you have installed.  If you want more, 
just download them from CTAN and don't forget

Incidentally, I recommend the Jurabib package, which I recently used to 
write a course book using Chicago format.  It takes a while to work

If you have to do this, we have a bug.
I did have to do it with some documents I imported from 1.1.6 - I don't 
remember if I did with 1.2.  Unfortunately I don't have any 1.1.6 
document left (at least not ones with bibliographies) so I can't 
reprodcue the behaviour.

Jurabib: my own question answered, plus another one

In case anyone is interested in using Jurabib in LyX (see my earlier 
question), here's how to do it ...

Insert something allong the lines of the following in your preamble:

1. It is necessary to invoke babel in the preamble - having it set in 
Edit->Preferences->Language doesn't seem to work.
2. The options here are for a humanities paper using Chicago Manual of 
Style format. There are plenty of other configurations possible.  With 
no options specified, you get the standard ones for legal papers. Check 
out the examples on the Jurabib homepage.
3. Don't use the lookat option, as it will generate errors.
4. The last line is important, otherwise you'll wind up with all your 
citations in the body of your text.

One glitch, though.  I've noticed that in an article citation, the date 
appears between the volume number and the issue number; e.g.

_Journal of Religion and Film_ 5 October (2001), no. 2

Does anyone know what's causing this problem?

You can find the solution in the LaTeX documentation. You've got some 
posibilities:

index?  For example, I can make "simulacrum" and "simulacra" have the 
same entry by usng the same index label, but I can only then have one

or

(OK, not a wonderful example, since these will appear next to each other 
anyway, but it becomes more useful if I need to have, say, "Albigensian 
- see Cathar").

the paragraph environments, they come from whoever writes the LaTeX

Yeah, ok, maybe "your" was not the right word. and perhaps tuning all
the features is also a bad idea. However, tuning some of the more
important ones shouldn't be too hard, surely? things like section
numbering style, font size and type & indent for the different
sections...
There is already quite a bit you can do - font size, for example is 
included in document settings (though you only get a choice of 10, 11 or 
12 points - if you want anything bigger, you need to use a class like 
poster or manually fine-tune the whole of your document).  Expanding the 
rangeof font faces has been on the table for a long time, but it's a 
larger piece of work than it looks - LyX just comes up with the fonts 
that are common to just about any TeX installation, and adding more 
fonts would require it to search the user's TeX directory to see what 
had been installed. As far as I can tell (C++ is beyond me!) it wouldn't 
be rocket science, but it would be donkey work.

Numbering style is still handled by the document class, though it 
wouldn't be hard to over-ride it in a similar way to bullet styles, I 
suppose.  Again, indentation of headings is automatically done by the 
document class.

It seems you're looking for one of two things.  Either your needs would 
be best met by some kind of style editor, so you could create LyX layout 
files on the fly (which would, I agree, be very nice) or you need the 
ability to micro-format everything as you type.  In the latter case, 
LyX is probably not the best program for you, and I suspect that 
anything based on LaTeX wouldn't be either.  You either need a very 
clever frontend to TeX which doens't rely on LaTeX, or you need a good 
conventional word processor (e.g. OpenOffice) or DTP program (Scribus is 
getting there slowly, though it's still not in the same league as the 
big commercial DTP programs).

Easy - just click the TeX button and insert your LaTeX into the red box 
that comes up (assuming you're using a relatively recent version of

known to abuse my faculty member borrowing priveleges by keeping it out 
of the library for a whole semester (along with Unix Power Tools and 
Programming Perl).

a lot of LaTeX by osmosis.

Implementing character styles has been mentioned a few times, as has 
replacing the "hardwired" font selection with something more flexible, 
based on what fonts are actually installed in LaTeX.  I've also 
mentioned that using the OpenOffice Word filter would be nice, but again 
that's a major project, since AFAIK it is not available as a standalone 
application like wv.

I realise that people get very defencive about software they have worked
on, and I really don't mean to cause any offence, but 1,4&5 are pretty
vital features to me. What do you guys think? AFAIK they should all be
able to be added without too much work (not that I've actually looked at
the code myself, i don't have the experience, or the know-how).
Some of them could be implemented without too much trouble; others, I 
think, would be require a lot of work. Some may not even be practical at 
all; for example, allowing users to fine tune *all* aspects of 
formatting really means being a front-end to TeX rather than LaTeX.  It 
could be done, but you would then have a different program altogether, 
perhaps. I use LyX for most of my writing because it relieves me of the 
fine-tuning, and I'm fortunate enough to want to produce the kind of 
documents that LaTeX is designed to produce.  When I need to fiddle with 
the details of physical (as opposed to logical) layout, I use 
OpenOffice.  They are both valid ways of doing things, but I'm not sure 
how good it is to try and mix them.

BTW, I'm sure that if a benevolent millionaire were to pay a team of LyX 
developers to implement every feature request anyone has come up with 
here or on Bugzilla, someone would write in to complain about LyX being 
bloated and say there is a need for a lightweight front-end to LaTeX ;-)

I am trying to run LyX on my old P166, but it gets too slow. So, I was wondering if:

1 - Is there a lighter version of LyX or a lighter program that works just like it?
LyX itself is about as light as you can get - it's LaTeX that eats 
resources, but you only need that when you preview or export.
2 - Can I convert .rtf to .lyx? There is a rtf editor (Ted) which is pretty light; If that is possible, I can work with it and then convert its files to .lyx later.
Not directly, but I saw a program once that converted RTF to LaTeX. 
OTOH, RTF has such minimal formatting that it's probably better to 
convert it to plain text, then redo your formatting in LyX.
3 - Is there any other solution to this problem?
I'd suggest investing in some RAM. CPU speed is not so important, but a 
decent amount of RAM is essential, unless you want to cook dinner while 
you're running latex.

Not sure I understand what you mean by "pain" Andre... cos I thought that one of
the coolest features of the Qt version was being able to navigate thru folders
and files much quicker than in the xforms version.. and this took away a lot of
the pain, for me at least! :-)
Oh yes!  It's nice knowing what will happen when I click on a file, too ;-)

I can't help you with the Arabic side, but I have a general guide to

The short answer: File->Export->HTML

The long answer:
LyX does not produce HTML itself; it uses whatever converters are
installed on your computer. The most commonly used is latex2html, but
you can specify others such as tth or hevea.
In using latex2html, it's worth learning how to tweak the options that
control whether, and at what level, pages are split, navigation tools
etc. and specifying those (in Edit->Preferences->Converters).  For example
latex2html -no_subdir -split 0 -show_section_numbers $$i

will give you a one-page document, retaining the section numbers from
LyX (the default is to remove them).  There is a lengthy documentation 
supplied with the latex2html package.

Personally I find latex2html is best used in combination with stylesheet 
tweaking.  It is _not_ suitable for sophistiacted website design - you 
want an HTML editor for that (Bluefish, Quanta+, CoffeeCup ... take your 
pick).

Thanks, but that replaces all apostrophes with quotation marks - what I 
need is something to replace straight quotes (").  Nevertheless, I think 
I've got the idea - I'm not that familiar with sed, but I can probably

Failed to make it clear that one does not need to look for a "LyX-like

One way to avoid that impression is simply by not supporting MS Windows at
all. Maybe not the best, but certainly the simplest.


True, but I think now the Qt version is up and running, a native Windows 
version is a realistic goal.  Whether it would be worth the effort is 
uncertain - that's something for interested developers to decide.

There are a number of ways to reset the base font size.  Here's one I 
haven't tried but saw somewhere:

\def\@normalsize{\@setsize\normalsize{13pt}\xpt\@xpt}

Another would be to export as LaTeX and change the first line to read 
something like

   \documentclass[13pt]{exreport}

If that doesn't work for your class, then you may have to hack the class 
file, I suppose.

A quick kludge is to block the whole text the go to Layout>Character and 
 select Increase under Size.

The default DVI viewer is gv, which you may not have installed. 
Otherwise, change it to kdvi.

The document text is shown using a unicode font, so you don't need to mess
with font encodings: if you have iso10646-1 fonts, LyX will be able to show
any language that you can input.

The text in menus/dialogs is shown using an 8-bit encoding.
You can control which encoding is used by setting the LANG environment
variable (in the future, it will also be unicode).



OK - got it.  It's only a problem with documents I wrote on the xforms 
version, but hell, I can live with that.

That is correct. This is the one major limitation of the Qt frontend at the 
moment. The fault, if fault is to be aportioned, lies within Qt itself I 
understand. Perhaps more fairly, they do not deal with many projects such 
as ours which do not use their classes in the core of the program and so 
have not had to develop the flexible interface to their library that we 
require in this instance. I also understand that they are now aware of our 
problem and are addressing it.

In the meantime, what you have got has taken an enormous amount of creative 
'hacking' by John Levon to get it into the state it is now. Personally. I 
think that the man deserves a medal for his efforts ;-)

I'll second that!


If you require the flexibility you describe, then you are stuck with the 
xforms frontend for a little while longer.

I'll sacrifice flexibility for usability and aesthetics for the time 
being.  There is no problem with the output, as I can set language and 
charset differently in Layout-Document, so I guess I can live with the 
limited GUI for a while.

independently of the language, but this doesn't seem to be the case in 
Qt, unless I'm missing something.  For example, I write classroom 
materials, administrative stuff etc. in English, but frequently have to 
insert Turkish names, so in older versions I would set the lnguage as 
English but set the encoding as iso-8859-9.  As far as I can see, in 
1.3.0-qt, I can set the font but not the charset.

The Qt frontend behaves very differently in this respect.

 

All hail to the GUI-independence team!  Even without the Turkish charset 
problem, I was itching to get away from x-forms (though I hear the 
version with xforms 1.0 is a bit more workable).  The new dialogue boxes 
are very pretty too, and much more functional.  Great job, guys.

Wow - I finally managed to compile 1.3.0 with the Qt frontend and it is 
a joy to use.  Congratulations to all the developers.

As an added bonus, I finally get to use Turkish characters, and I don't 
have to change my keyboard layout to do so.  I don't know if this is a 
fix between the last prelease and the stable release, or if it's a 
result of compiling it on my own machine.

LyX now comes with a choice of frontends:
* the one you are used to which uses the xforms library.
* a new one which uses the Qt library.

If you want the Qt one, then you have to build it from the .tar.gz sources. 
AFAIK, nobody has created an rpm yet.

Yep, it took me a while to find all the necessary Qt stuff.  Now I get 
past all that when I run configure, but it fails, saying it couldn't 
find the XFree86 headers.  I have XFree86-devel installed - what gives?

Could be.  I tried to compile with Qt, but ran into problems I mentioned 
earlier (it's probably a problem with my RPM database - I'm getting that 
"everything already installed" message when everything is obviously not 
installed, or at least not installed properly).

I believe John Levon's patch fixes this, so downloadable binaries
should probably include it

Reading the bug, credit is due to JMarc/Mike Fabian. And it would appear 
(reading the bug) that Robin hasn't actually been able to test it properly, 
for one reason or another. 

Various reasons - I can't compile CVS programs at home because my tiny 
hard drive fills up.  Until recently my Linux box at work was so slow 
that compiling anything of any size would slow it to a crawl, which 
didn't please people who were waiting for print jobs.  Now I have an 
upgraded box I'm working on it, but it'll take some time.

So he can hardly be overly upset that an 
untested patch hasn't made it into cvs ;-)

 

I wasn't upset, just felt I should point it out - the bug was marked as 
fixed, if I remember rightly.

1.3.0pre3 keymap problems

I've just installed 1.3.0pre3 from the i386 RPM.  It still has the 
Turkish keymap bug from 1.2.* (bug #413, IIRC).  To get Turkish (Latin 5 
/ iso-8859-9) characters to work at all,  I need to change my normal 
keyboard layout from Turkish to US and use the Turkish keymap. Even so, 
the uppercase dotted I comes out as a quotation mark (as in 1.2.2). This 
is because for some weirtd reason it's not encoded as an uppercase "i". 
I believe John Levon's patch fixes this, so downloadable binaries 
should probably include it.

Compiling lyx 3.0 - missing binary?

I ran ./configure --with-frontend=qt (after the autogen stuff) on LyX 
3.0 (CVS) and got the following error message:

configure: error: moc binary not found in $PATH or /bin !

What is moc?

Indeed, any attachments other than .lyx or .tex.  We had a discussion 
about banning all attachments some time back, but we need people to be 
able to post example files, and I'm pretty sure these particular types

I can print a webpage in Konqueror, but am unable or unsure how to export 
from Lyx to Postscript.  When I click on file (after creating a test 
document), then export, the following options are available:  ASCII, DVI, 
Latex, and PDF.  

I wonder if my installation is incomplete.  To install I did an "apt-get 
install Lyx" (in Debian/Linux).  I assumed that this would install everything 
that I needed to use Lyx.  But according to the tutorial I should be able to 
click on view->DVI (after creating a test file), and a new window should pop 
up.  Nothing happens.

The tutorial says I need a dvi viewer (e.g. xdvi) and a postscript converter 
(e.g. dvips).  Perhaps they have to be installed separately?  I searched the 
Debian packages and could not find xdvi or dvips.  


Do you have gv (Ghostscript) installed?

arrived today.  Works fine on Mandrake 8.2, though unfortunately bug 413 
(Turkish characters not coming out correctly) seems to be there still 
(I've posted this on bugzilla).

Usually one cannot read from incoming directories (just write to

If you make the column fixed width, you can insert extra lines using

Many system upgrades ago, I had a neat little script called psbooklet 
which would take a PostScript file and turn it into an A4 booklet (sort 
of a combination of pstops and psbook).  Now I can't find it anywhere on 
the net.  Does anyone know a download location for this script, or any 
equivalent program (I tried psheft, but couldn't get it to compile).

AFAIK there are two versions, one is GPL (but no LGPL!), so you can use it with
GPL applications. 

That's not a problem anyway - a GPLed program can utilise external 
proprietary programs (xforms wasn't GPLed until very recently).

wv works OK for most Word documents, but can choke on some MS encodings. 
 It also, IMHO, tries to be too faithful to the physical format of a 
Word doc (which is usually ugly anyway).  One rather roundabout solution 
with awkward Word documents is to load them into Star Office / 
OpenOffice and tidy them up (converting them to OpenOffice's native 
format then converting back to Word might get rid of some glitches).

Btw, does anybody happen to know a program for converting HTML to
LyX/TeX/LaTeX? Can't find from the Herbert's page.


There's a Perl script called html2latex which works reasonably well. 
You may have to hack it to get it to find your Perl installation, though.

I did it with CSS.  latex2html generates a style sheet, so you can just 
alter the settings for whatever CSS paragraph type your code is rendered 
in. Inserting
font-family: Courier; typewriter;
should do the trick.

What do I need to set so all users can view their .lyx documents as .pdf 
or .ps?

Do you have the same problem with exporting?  Is it just with PS/PDF, or 
do you also get an error when exporting as LaTeX?  In the former case 
I'd suggest checking permissions on ghostscript, in the latter, ditto 
for latex.
