yes there is. but not to quell the author of it is actually lacking alot
of words and place names. I was hoping to make a more up to date version

Existing resources are probably better than reinventing the wheel, even if it

Hi :)
Side-by-side is fairly easy on Win7 and Ubuntu 12.04.  Not sure about others 
but it's got to have originated somewhere and is probably on the cards 
elsewhere.  Not sure about synchronised scrolling though, that part sounds like 
a good item for a feature-request / bug-report.

So, in Ubuntu 12.04 and Win7 just grab the first document's window and drag it 
to the far left as though you are dragging it off-screen.  When a weird shadow 
fills half the screen let go.  Whatever size and shape the windo had been it 
now fills half the screen.  Do the same to the 2nd document's window but drag 
it to the right.  Errr i choose left first just because it feels more 
comfortable to me.  If you try to drag it off the top of the screen then the 
window tries to maximise.  


Of course you could use Alt Tab to flick between any windows on the workspace 
you are on and that can be a good way to compare quickly.  


Most Gnu&Linux distros also let you flick between different work-spaces quickly 
so changes jump out at you that way too.  Windows users probably aren't 
familiar with the spinning cube (which i can never get to work).  Of course 
Ubuntu kinda lost that quick flick between workspaces in 11.04 using Unity 
(unless i'm missing a key-combo (which is highly likely))

for students in Calc? Why not in Writer, Draw, or Impress?

I would like to handout worksheets to students with their names already printed 
on it.

I have a workbook in Calc with two spreadsheets.  The first spreadsheet is 
simply a list of names (NAMES).  The second spreadsheet is a form with, among 
other things, a name field (FORM).  I would like to print FORM as many times as 
the NAMES field contains, and of course have each form with each individual 
name on it.

I have googled this and seen many results but they all refer to using Writer.  
Can this be done using just Calc?

Further more I am running 12.10 but with GNOME as my default shell. I
had a friend remove alot of the unity elements as in my opinion its just
so messy and hard to work with!

Its good to see that there are now .DEB packages for installation
because for awhile there wasn't. I'm thankful for all the suggestions,
it just seems I need to get a good grounding in Terminal theory now. I'm
glad I made the change over to Ubuntu as there is so much more support
out there for it when compared to other distros. I'm only having some
compatibility issues with it at the moment (My android phone is not
being detected even though I have done so much config for it lol)

Halleluiah! Right-justify and center tabs have been fixed for Impress in 
Version 4.0.0.0.alpha1+ (Build ID: 
d6579884752c298a18b7cdfcc7d1614b55c9c7c) that was put up 06-Dec-2012 04:19.


I use presentation slides each week for our church service, and the 
header on each slide has a center tab and a right-justify tab.  So, when 
version 4 is released officially, I will be able to update the software 
on our computer that drives the video projector.

Hi :)
Just thought people here might be interested to know of last week's 
announcement from MariaDb.  It is a drop-in replacement for MySql so hopefully 
any databases you have created in MySql should be easily opened by MariaDb.  I 
would still do a back-up though in order to ensure Murphy's Law plays in your 
favour.  (ie if you have taken the trouble to do a back-up you wont need it and 
will probably feel like it was a waste of time.)


MariaDb and MySql are fairly hefty good back-ends that are even more useful 
when using Base as the front-end.  Other good back-ends include Postgresql 
which might actually be slightly better at integrating with Base as they helped 
us a bit with some sort of connector or something apparently.  These are all 
great if you have tons of data but possibly a bit more than you need for a 
small and simple address list of just a few hundred (or so) people.

the next version of Debian which is currently in testing, and may well
be released as 'stable' in quarter 1 of 2013, but that’s just my
guesstimate.

 The above is the normal situation when LibreOffice is part of a 
Debian distribution. There is another thing to consider. The Debian 
version of LibreOffice has its own set of bugs that are different from 
the bugs that LibreOffice from the LO website may have. Besides, the 
Debian versions are always several versions behind those in the LO 
website. For example, the Debian stable version due out this spring will 
likely be 3.6.x. The website should have 3.6.4 shortly with 3.6.6 due 
out in the week of April 8-14, 2013. (They would like to have 4.02 out 
about that same time.
 I think I had the same problem with Ubuntu (a Debian derivative). 
Since with my writing and QA testing I need to use LO from the website, 
I have to remove the Ubuntu version completely using Synaptic. 
Unfortunately this has to be done every time I go to the newest version 
of Ubuntu. Fortunately, that is only once every 2 years. Daily upgrades 
from Ubuntu do not bother my versions of LibreOffice.

redundant operation on the desktop integration stuff.

Hi :)
Errr, when you are at the top of a column and don't know how far down it goes 
you can always use
Ctrl down-arrow
to get to the bottom, or at least the first break.  Being fairly paranoid i do 
Ctrl and down-arrow again just to make sure the list doesn't resume after a 
short break of a few empty cells.  If it does i get to the top of the new 
start.  

If you also press the shift key while doing that it selects all the cells 
between the start and where-ever you have ended-up so far.  Just shift and 
down-arrow adds one more cell to your selection.  Shift and up-arrow takes the 
last cell off.  So, as long as you avoid taking your finger off the shift key 
you can rapidly select quite a messy column even if it has tons of breaks in 
it.

Hi :)
Ahhh, tabbed auto-complete is really helpful.  


On a unix-based command-line, so that's any Gnu&Linux just start typing a 
command or pathname or file-name and after about 2 or 3 characters press the 
tab key.  It then lists all the relevant things that start with those 2 or 3 
characters and copies everything you have typed so far onto a new line so that 
you can ignore all the suggestions and carry on typing if you want.  If there 
is only 1 suggestion then it just fills in all the rest for you.  Errr, i dunno 
how to select say the 5th option except by using the mouse to copy&paste.  The 
keyboard short-cut for paste doesn't work but mouse paste is always good :)

Hi :)
Errr, Amiko is well worth watching btw.  It's rare to see an interviewer that 
manages to get people talking rather than kinda taking over and doing most of 
the talking themselves.  She makes it much easier to understand what is going 
on by avoiding technical terms and encourages interviewees to keep-it-simple 
too by giving them a clue as to what level of understanding to pitch the 
interview at.  If you listen to her voice on the "What is happening on the 
space station today" she clearly does know the technical words so it's even 
more interesting to see her dodge them when interviewing.  When i first started 
watching i assumed she was hopeless until i realised what she was achieving, 
getting people to relax and opening up with interesting answers.  Brandi is 
pretty good too but has a completely different approach.

I just checked for updates and Libre Office reports that my system is up to 
date. 

However I went out to the LO site and found the newer rev. SO I downloaded it 
and installed and ran into the exact same problem today with fonts missing from 
files that were fine yesterday.

Also that did not fix the help file problem at all. 

Would there be any place or way to send the screen shots and would they be 
helpful?

Hi :)
Average walking speed for most people is generally considered to be around 
4miles/hour so you are either very fit, or walking downhill a lot.  It is 
important to eat properly and get plenty of exercise and not smoke but many 
people here are office workers.  

I cycle to work but then my work-place moved a lot nearer.  On push-bike i can 
get up to around 20 miles/hour if the road is clear.  It used to take me half 
hour to get to work but now takes around 10mins with most of that being stuck 
in traffic.

Hi :)
I think there is some confusion here.  


Compile means something specific in OpenSource and is not the same as "get 
together" or "acquire".  Compile means taking the raw source code and 
installing that onto your system.  It's nice to watch the newly made youTube 
video to help with that but this whole process is wy more than most people 
will ever need to do.  


It's much easier to get the Debian-family installer from

and then these instructions to unzip/unpack it and then install it.

If you want to create your own installer from the source code then i think 
that's called something like, doing your own "build" and hopefully this link 
might help

Again this is wy more than most people will ever need.  Mostly these days 
LO is installed by default on most fresh new Gnu&Linux systems or grab it from 
the repos using the package manager.  

Gnu&Linux distro fall neatly into about 6-8 different families.  Many of the 
newer ones are in the Debian family including ones such as Mint, Ubuntu.  
There's also a Redhat family, Slackware family.  Even different families often 
use the same installers so there are only about 4 different installers needed 
to cover all the different distros.  

You really don't need to create a differrent installer for each different 
release of each different  distro.  That's the kind of craziness that hardware 
manufacturers seem to think in their ignorance = or at least the excuse that 
often gets used by people who should know better.  

As i understand it the main advantage of compiling the code from scratch is 
that it streamlines your version of LO and tailors it to your specific set of 
hardware.  So it should run faster and is just more cool when you mention it to 
your mates.  Unless you compiled your own version of Ubuntu then you really 
don't need to go this route.  Ubuntu is not really designed to be compiled from 
scratch.  It's meant to be an easy install where everything magically works 
without havign to do much.  There are other distros that are much better for 
this sort of thing, such as Arch, Tiny Core, Slackware and they have loads of 
help geared towards helping people compile pretty much anything they want.

It should (?) be easy to find the number of rows without having a big time 
consuming operation to do it, database engine APIs often provide a function 
for this.  Yes, please put in a change request.

I am missing this feature for my TOCs since I moved from MSO to OO
several years ago. It allows a clean layout of long line like here:

From the new feature list I also would expect this should work in LO
3.5, but I cannot get it to work, too.

Actually, in the tab pane of the paragraph it is possible to set a
tab in the margin area and when entering text, the paragraph mark
jumps to that position, but the line break still occurs before that
tab at the end of the paragraph.

I also tried to use a paragraph with right indent and so set the tab
stop in that area before the page margin (As I remember this is the
way it worked in MSO). Also here, the tab can be set but without
having the desired effect.

I don't want to write a note.
It's more like writing a table of content (not really a toc but something
like this), with longer text and a page number left.
A short example what i try to do:

text text text
text text text   page

As far as I know, this is possible in MS Word and the Feature List of LO 3.5
(detailed information under [1]) states that this is also possible.

I've tried everything, but now i start to think, that this behaviour is not
working (I use LO 3.5.4).
I wonder if I had misunderstood this feature.

When a tab stop is set behind the end margin, the tab uses this value and
does not go to a new line. A compatibility option has been added, thus only
new documents will behave this way.

Hi :)
I think you do the same thing.  It should also work the same way for Impress 
and Draw too.  A lot of things that people try to use Calc for are easier to do 
in Base but only if you have some experience with it.  At some point people 
that use Calc would be doing themselves a favour by struggling with Base for a 
non-urgent task
