Install them with the LED shining toward the center of the board and the
polarity will be automatic.

OK, I may try paralleling R10 with something. I never operate at night
with green electrons, here in the shack, while the K3 is in the Elecraft
hospital, I'm on thoroughly brown electrons from NV Energy. This may
solve my seeing problem.

Skip,
The backlight is intentionally dim to conserve current draw. You could
reduce Front Panel R10 a bit to make it a bit brighter.

Frank,
The K2 had backlighting since Day 1. You could turn on/off the
backlighting by selecting the menu LCD Nite or Day.
For the K1, it was an option that was developed some time after the K1
was announced.

Thanks to all who offered suggestions and advice and particularly to Don

worked through the problem.
There may be something useful in the experience, so here’s what it was:

I have to wonder if you haven't run into the problem I had with my K3S
about four weeks ago. Same symptoms. The cause was a shorted filter
cap for the LCD bias on the display board. Details are in the mailing

Ted,
A blank display is quite unusual. Does "Elecraft" display when the K2
is powered on?
First check the DC voltage at the anodes of D6 and D7. In receive D6
should be near 8 volts while D7 anode should be near zero volts.
If there is voltage at the anode of D7, the K2 is going into tran

I just finished my second K2 build. All tests are well within the values

Look for unsoldered connections on the front panel board.
Turn the RF Gain fully counterclockwise to see if the LED Bargraph

For the LCD display, peek under the LCD to see if pin 1 of the U1 socket

George,
Intermittent operation like that would suggest something is loose. The
most likely place is at the housing for the counter probe. Many
builders have trouble inserting the crimp pins into the housing and end
up distorting the pins so the good contact becomes quite "iffy".

John,
Most K2s will do that on occasion. It normally happens when the
firmware is doing many tasks.
If it is frequent, then you may have a problem, but just occasionally,
no problem.

Hello John,
The display of my K2/100 #3255 behaves in similar fashion sometimes, albeit
not often. I was at first concerned that this quirk might be a symptom of
some serious problem, but the results of two tone IMD transmitter tests and
receiver noise floor measurements I made showed no change
Hello All,
My base K2 is completed and KSB2, KNB2 and KDSP2 modules are installed and
working well. I'm relieved. Thanks to Don for his reassurance along the way.
I've noticed a quirk with the display of my K2 and can't find it mentioned
in the archives. While tuning with the VFO, the display w
Ron,
Upon re-reading your post, the voltage you measured at U3 pin 7 is about
what would be expected with a 13.5 volt power source.
Did you measure the U6 pin 5 voltage on the lead of the chip or at the
socket. If you measured at the socket, try at the chip lead because you
may have a pin ben
Ron,
Do you have the Control Board P7 jumpered between pins 2 and 3 (marked INT)?
If so, what is the voltage at P7 pin 3? How about pin 2? - both should
be about 0.3 volts below your supply voltage. What is your supply
voltage when the K2 is powered on? (Measure at the anode of RF Board

I'm building a K2. The [DISPLAY] button shows a voltage of less than 2

Bob,
You likely have an unsoldered or poorly soldered connection on the Front
Panel Board.
Separate the front panel from the board and you can probe most
everything on the front panel board.
Do a visual check and you may be able to find it - check pin 1 of the U1
socket, that is a common one
Hi, Bob!
That sort of behavior is almost always caused by a missed solder joint. The
lead lying in the plated solder pad hole made good enough connection for a
while, but it is getting more oxidized over time and so the contact is
getting worse and more intermittent.
Don, W3FPR, will certaily p

Mine turned out that way as well, and I've advised folks to be aware
of it before they put the front panel on "for good" so they can put a
piece of tape across the top to mask it if it bothers them.

Wayne,
If there are no stripes - REMOVE nothing from either the diffuser or the LCD
display. The white tape/paper never should come off the backlight assembly.
After you finish all the soldering, and before putting the front panel on,
remove the thin clear plastic film from the front of the LCD.

I'm new at this. Ignore my previous message! I did a search of this list and

Leave everything on the LED and LCD alone! Check for a clear protective
coating at time of mounting the circuit to the front panel, per manual.
Right?

I am building K2 04858 and have arrived at the display installation in the
front panel. I have a couple questions and am too impatient to wait for the
Elecraft gang to open up about noon [here] Monday so I turn to this group.
1. When does the kind of flimsy white tape/paper come off the diffuse
thinking of what would be fun...
How about an outboard unit associated with the K2 that delivered a pan-adaptor
replicating display. I haven't a clue how complex such an endeavor might be,
