Re: [AI] Seeking R B I circular.

2008-07-22 Thread rkg
Hello Kanchan,
Perhaps, our Indian banks affected directly from the narrow and rigid
attitude of their employees, even in large scale specially at highest level.
This is great unfortunate for our Indians that having internet facility in
most branches of Indian banks, they usually ask to concerned VH customer to
show the RBI CIRCULAR DATED 4-6-08. I myself have provided the copy of
this great RBI circular to several those VH persons, who don't know computer
operating.
Therefore, I request you and other concerned persons to make dialogue with
RBI for calling a meeting of heads of all Indian banks for implementing this
circular by their all branches without any delay and for taking immediate
appropriate departmental action against concerned employees / officials, who
creat unnecessarily problem to inplement this circular.
Regards,
Rakesh.

[AI] SMiShing on the rise

2008-07-22 Thread prateek aggarwal
NEW DELHI: Phishing is now spilling over to your mobile phone. The
next time you receive an SMS from your mobile operator informing you
about a service you have subscribed to and asking you to call a
certain number to unsubscribe, beware, it can be a phishing message.

Just like computer users who click on spam emails and are taken to a
fraudulent website posing as a legitimate one, SMS phishing (or simply
'SMiShing') similarly dupes the mobile user to visit a phished site by
sending an SMS pretending to be from a trustworthy entity. If one
falls in the trap, it can lead to leakage of sensitive information
such as user names, passwords and even credit card numbers.

While SMS phishing or SMiShing misleads the user to visit a website,
'vishing' on the other hand directs the user to call on a number, for
instance the customer care number of a telecom service provider, which
instead is routed to a hacker. Voice phishing or 'vishing' uses a
combination of voice over Internet protocol (VoIP), SMS and the
Internet to dupe the receiver into dialing a phone number and collect
sensitive subscriber information for financial gain.

As mobile phones become general purpose computing platforms, they are
increasingly being subjected to new vulnerabilities like SMiShing and
voice phishing. According to Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG), an
International agency which tracks phishing incidents, India ranks
third with about 9.39 per cent of the total phishing incidents that
were reported globally, last year.

India's computer emergency response team (CERT) recorded 1,237 cyber
security-related incidents in 2007.

According to Gartner, phishing-related losses have been estimated at
$2.8 billion with a single victim losing $1,244 in 2007. Says Trend
Micro country manager for India and SAARC Niraj Kaushik, The number
of phishing crimes that are reported in the public domain is much
lower than the actual number of incidents that happen. Victims often
do not report due to lack of a centralized complaint registering
mechanism. Moreover, tracking the perpetrator is difficult.

Though the government launched a 'do-not-call' registry to keep
unauthorised callers at bay, the losses resulting from mobile phishing
are increasing constantly. In one of the cases, an Airtel customer was
misdirected by a caller pretending to be from Airtel customer care.
The caller informed that she had been subscribed to a caller tune and
to cancel it, a certain number will have to be dialed. When the
customer called the said number she was instead directed to a hacker.

According to Informa Telecoms Media (ITM) study, sponsored by
McAfee, 83 per cent of mobile operators are hit by mobile device
infections annually . With corporates increasingly adopting business
mobility, SMS phishing and vishing attacks pose a serious problem.

According to a global survey by Nokia, more than 71.2 per cent of
corporate subscribers by 2010 will be using SMS and SMS based
applications for business mobility Mobile commerce is another
industry, which can be severely hit by SMS scams. New Mcommerce
services like money transfers, bill payments and remittances via
mobile are on the rise.

Currently, 16 per cent of mobile phone subscribers already use mobile
banking services, says a survey by Harris Interactive, a global
research firm. As more and more applications get launched, security on
the mobile will become a major concern lest telecom operators take
notice.

[AI] Tech Dose of the Day: Flex, Cairngor, etc.

2008-07-22 Thread Vishnu Ramchandani
Flex
Dosed by Baskar P – M E Team (from MphasiS Software Services)
What is a Flex?
Flex is an open source free framework for building rich internet applications
that can be developed and deployed on cross platform and will work consistently
on all major browsers, desktops, and operating systems. Flex is primarily a
developer's tool and the way you develop Flex applications is entirely
different than the way you develop Flash RIAs. All Flex development is based
upon a framework that provides you with reusable and extendable UI components,
data retrieval services, event handling functionality and much more.
How does it work?
Building Flex applications can be free. All you need is the free, open source
Flex SDK, which includes:
• The Flex Framework - the predefined class libraries and application services
• The standalone compiler
The following two languages can be used to build RIAs:
• MXML is an XML-based markup language that is primarily used to layout
application display elements.
• ActionScript is an ECMAScript-compliant object-oriented programming language
that is primarily used for application logic.
If you are using the Free SDK, you will use the standalone compiler to compile
your code into a SWF file. Flex Builder can be set to compile your code
automatically and also create the necessary browser detection and other
relevant client-side code.
During compilation, your MXML code is translated into ActionScript code and
then all the ActionScript code is compiled into binary SWF files. The SWF file
can be uploaded to the web server, where it is then served up based on user
request.

Cairngorm
Dosed by Vaidehi Kumari – M E Team (from MphasiS Software Services)
What is a Cairngorm ?
The Cairngorm Micro architecture is a lightweight yet prescriptive framework
for rich Internet application (RIA) development.
Cairngorm is an implementation of design patterns that the consultants at Adobe
Consulting have successfully taken from enterprise software development (with
technologies including J2EE and .NET) and applied rich Internet application
development using Adobe Flex.
What is its usefulness?
The Cairngorm micro architecture is intended as a framework for Enterprise RIA
developers. Cairngorm has been used, and can continue to be used, for the rapid
development of applications built with Flash MX and Flash Remoting. However,
the implementation of the design patterns (the patterns that have been selected
for the micro architecture) and the future roadmap for Cairngorm development
are firmly aligned with the feature set - advertised and anticipated - of the
Adobe Flex platform, and the emerging ecosystem of tools (such as Apollo)
around the Flex platform.
The benefits of the Cairngorm architecture are realized when developing complex
RIA applications with multiple use-cases and views, with a team of developers,
and with a multi-disciplinary development team that includes designers as well
as creative and technical developers.

[AI] Some useful Web sites

2008-07-22 Thread Vishnu Ramchandani
www.keybr.com

So who types faster, you or your friend? Well, head over to this site and find
out. Keybr gives you a simple typing test which calculates your
words-per-minute speed. And it’s not as simple as it sounds: Points are
deducted for errors, and a lot of the given text is pure gibberish, so typing
by anticipating the next word isn’t going to work here. Try it out and compete
with a friend: Fastest finger’s first!

www.ebuddy.com

This site is a chatter’s paradise: eBuddy is a browser-based instant messaging
collaborator where users can access various accounts, such as MSN or Windows
Live, Google, Yahoo, AIM and Myspace. The resource provides a uniform
interface, similar in appearance to the Windows Live Messenger client. It also
offers an option of different pop-out windows for each account, or can put them
all together in a single tabbed window. Quite a handy and easy-to-use tool,
especially if you frequently switch between different computers.

www.zebrakeys.com

This Web site offers 50 free lessons for those wanting to learn how to play the
piano. Targetted at ages 13 and upwards, ZebraKeys divides its tutorial into
four parts: Preparation, Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced, with multiple
lessons in each category. Along with the lessons, the resource also offers
reviews of equipment, articles on pianos, and a discussion forum for
keyboardists.

turnpaige.com

This resource is all about young readers. Turning the Paige offers discussions,
recommendations and reviews on books for ‘young readers, and readers that are
young at heart’. And yes, the site makes navigation simple by dividing the
reviews according to series, genres, age levels, etc, and even provides
easy-to-use ‘top 10’ lists.

Press enter on the go button.
The link that says click to enter will appear.

Re: [AI] NCERT books.

2008-07-22 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
PDF file which so opens is that containing links to individual chapters, or
that's what I found at least!

You have to download each chapter individually and compile it into book
format, if you like as I have done for a number of my friends at times.

by going to URL suggested by me you are saved the pain of selecting class etc.
as well as you get an entire book.
Well, if there is any other method better than URL suggested by me which is a
link dump, I would welcome it.

 Phani, Vijay, Amer

I am not surprised that you are stil having problems with Banks. I had
 told
you that the ground level fight will go on for quite a while. If IBA
 issues
the circular then things will be better but it will not end the problem.
Anyway I am mailing each of you the RBI circular as a pdf file. If this
 does
not help then follow Harish's instructions.
Please write a formal complaint to RBI with all facts, dates and names and
 a
copy to me. I will follow it up at the highest level.
Unfortunately we are going to have a new person in charge of this
 department
very soon but there are some other sensative people who can be
 approached.

Deputy General Manager from his higher authority. On hearing about my personal

registered his grievances as Case No.45/2007 at Society for Child Development

parts:

Letter No.1:-

Dear KoddakkalShivprasad,

I am extremely thankful for your support and
cooperation given to me for seeking my rights as a
disabled employee.

By the Grace of GOD, I got my promotion this year, and
have now been posted to Lucknow around 2000 miles away
from my hometown. I had already served a full 5 year
term in Lucknow and this is my second positing.

Although they were unhappy that I could get my
promotion through the reservation policy, probably
they did not want to give it easy to me and hence this
treatment.

For the time being I am accepting it and shall take up
the cause at the appropriate time.

Thanking you,
with kind regards,
I remain,
Yours sincerely,

easwhar

Letter No.2

Dear Shri Shivaprasad,

Though you had registered my name with the Legal Aid
Cell, I had proceeded further through them. However,
your circulars and other information relating to
reservation for PH persons etc. were brought to the
notice of my management. Further, there were
evidences regarding the results produced by my team
for the work rendered and the Management was convinced
that there has been foul play in my case.
Incidentally, the automatic promotion which was denied
earlier, deliberately, by my senior officer once again
was in the negative and I did not receive the benefits
even for the 2nd consecutive year. Although the
Management was able to see the results from our
performance, the automatic promotion etc. were not
given which they felt was true injustice to me.
Hence, they were able to give the due credit in this
form.

I sincerely once again thank you for all the pains and
effort taken to help me in this case and you too are
part of my success.

regards
easwhar

We may send our gratitude to appreciate Legal Aid Cell at
www.disabilityindia.org and it’s head Dr.Madhumita Puri for their sincere
efforts and dedicated service to physically challenged people to get their
rightful promotions etc.

Hi Prateek,

Your first step should be to find out which linux distrobution system
you need to work with.

If it is indeed yubuntu, then you can work with the open source screen
reader orca.
But, if you work with any of these distros, then you need to use
emacspeak.

*  Debian Linux
*  Mandrake Linux
*  Red Hat Linux
*  Slackware Linux
*  SuSE Linux
*  TurboLinux

Block Quote Start
Emacspeak is a speech interface that allows visually impaired users to
interact independently and efficiently with the computer. Audio
formatting --a technique
pioneered by
AsTeR
-- and full support for
W3C's Aural CSS (ACSS)
allows Emacspeak to produce rich aural presentations of electronic
information. By seamlessly blending all aspects of the Internet such as
Web-surfing
and messaging, Emacspeak speech-enables local and remote information via
a consistent and well-integrated user interface. Available free of cost
on the
Internet, Emacspeak has dramatically changed how the author and hundreds
of blind and visually impaired users around the world interact with the
personal
computer and the Internet. A rich suite of
task-oriented tools
provides efficient speech-enabled access to the audio desktop and
evolving semantic WWW. When combined with Linux running on low-cost PC
hardware, Emacspeak/Linux
provides a reliable, stable speech-friendly solution that opens up the
Internet to visually impaired users around the world.

I dont know if there are any blind professionals for linux in India, but
you can join the blind linux mailing list to clarify your doubts.
