It would be better the story or the content related to blind can be
known overhere through mail.

Also it would be helpful for people of other languages if its
translated or atleast to English.

Thanks and regards,
Silpa.

Veteran actor Anupam Kher, who essays the role of a blind man in his
upcoming Marathi film ' Chhodo Kal Ki Baatein' , says the movie and his role
are a tribute to the visually impaired people.

The film, directed by Pramod Joshi, marks Anupam Kher's debut in Marathi
 cinema.

When you play the role of a differently abled person then you discover how
brilliantly they live their lives. This is a tribute to all the blind or
visually impaired people...hope everyone would like it, he told reporters
at the music launch of the film here .

It was Anupam Kher who at the last minute suggested that his character in
 the film should be blind.

Everything was difficult as I had not done preparation for the role which
was decided at the last minute.

I did not want to do it in a cliche manner; I wanted it to be realistic. We
did not want to have a blind man with a stick; this man is full of life--
happy and smiling, Anupam Kher said.

In the film, I play the role of a person who talks about vision but is
blind. I took this decision of playing blind character just minutes before I
started shooting. We intend to spread the message that one should live life
to the fullest, the award winning actor said.

The 56-year-old Bollywood veteran depended on his director for getting
 nuances of the Marathi language.

I am doing a Marathi film for the first time. I am not that good with the
language but my director was a very good coach and he guided me well. I
understand Marathi but I am not that good at speaking the language, he
 said. - PTI

Hi, Purnima and Mr. Bhavani,
considering the fact that I'm not a criminal lawyer, you will have to

Refer the CHAPTER XXII of IPC OF CRIMINAL INTIMIDATION, INSULT AND ANNOYANCE.
Sections 503, 504, 505(1)(B), (C).

For these 3 bac to back airline casess, which involved women. See the
section 509. which will of course, also include the above given
sections.

Hi,

It can convert text (unicode) to audio. I tried Hindi and Marathi with
Lekha. You should have TTS (Indian language) installed on your PC.

It only supports windows OS.

Re: [AI] Being addressed as 'aap'

2012-03-05 Thread Vamshi. G
Hi Mohith,

I am tempted to ask you whether you are older to your class mates?
Some people take up education a little late, and hence age gap between
classmates. Ignore this question if it isn't the case with you.

Second, if you like to be addressed as thu instead of aap, the
best thing is to tell them openly that you don't like to be addressed
as aap. I'll give you my own example.
I worked as a lecturer for about 6 years before joining the bank.
When I introduced myself as a lecturer, doing PhD, completed a few
master degrees, etc., everyone in the bank started addressing me as
sir. I felt they were not close with me. So, I told each one of
them openly that I like to be addressed by my first name. Then even
my peers, who are at least 5 years younger than me, started addressing
me by my name. Even now whenever there is a new employee in the
branch and starts putting extensions like je after my name, I tell
them my wish. If one starts doing this, others also start doing the
same.

Where ever you go, whatever you do, remember to communicate openly.
Never expect others to know you without you telling them what you are.
So, when a girl addresses you as aap, tell her that she can call
you thu if she really feels you are her friend. Tell this by
addressing her as thu. See the change!

On 3/5/12, Mohit Shah Shah mohit.shah...@gmail.com wrote:
 Hello folks,

As usual, I have a really weird and unique question.
I have often observed that all my classmates, and even some of my
friends, address me as 'aap' instead of 'tu', which is how they
 address each other.
I somehow feel that this has something to do with my visual impairment.
Perhaps, my classmates find it hard to be as open with me as they are
with others, so they try to talk to me in a respectful manner in order
to ensure that I don't get offended in any way.
And I've observed that this is more applicable in the case of my
 female classmates.
So, what can I do to make them feel at ease and treat me in a normal manner?

 Best,
 Mohit

Re: [AI] Being addressed as 'aap'

2012-03-05 Thread akhilesh
Nice question.
I still remember your question regarding the peeing in western toilet.
As vamshi ji, oh sorry, ha-ha.
vamshi, replied that if you're older to your class mate there is no
need to worry. And it has nothing to do with your blindness. I also
faced similar kind of so called respectful treatment during my college
days, and even now a days as well; lots of very senior lawyers call me
that way.
A lot has been written in previous mail. However, to ad to something
from my experience, just start asking them as to what is the reason
for this nice treatment? Just ask casually. Tell them openly that you
don't feel comfortable with this AAP thing. If things still do not
work, express yourself that you know the reason of this amazingly nice
treatment!!!

To end to this mail, I congratulate you for bringing such nice
questions to the list!!!

Thanks,

Perhaps, my classmates find it hard to be as open with me as they are

And I've observed that this is more applicable in the case of my

Re: [AI] how to find antilog values?

2012-03-05 Thread Umesha Economics
I think there is no antilog function in excel. but you can use power
function instead. for example, if we assume your log value is in A1, your
formula will be like this:

for common log, =power(10,A1)
for natural log, =power(e,A1)
of course, you have to give an approximate value for e.

activate jaws window by pressing insert J.
select options menu and then voices submenu.
if you want to modify it for a particular cursor like PC or jaws cursor,
select individual adjustments.

if you want to change it for all cursors, choose global adjustments.
in the dialog that opens, select global unless you need to change it for the
current program.

tab to punctuation combo box and choose all or most by arrow keys.
hit enter on OK button and you are done.

Make sure that, dropbox is working properly.
For this, you can through the terminal, use this command: dropbox status.
If dropbox is working, then, you will hear idle.
Otherwise, try this.
Through the terminal, type, pkill dropbox.
then type dropbox start.
Oh! forgot. must press enter after you type the command.

The writer, in one of his school's classrooms.
By WILLIAM JOHNSON
Published: March 3, 2012

I AM a special education teacher. My students have learning
disabilities ranging from autism and attention-deficit disorder to
cerebral palsy and emotional disturbances. I love these kids, but they
can be a handful. Almost without exception, they struggle on
standardized tests, frustrate their teachers and find it hard to
connect with their peers. What’s more, these are high school students,
so their disabilities are compounded by raging hormones and social
pressure.

Related in Opinion
Op-Ed Contributor: Shame Is Not the Solution (February 23, 2012) As
you might imagine, my job can be extremely difficult. Beyond the
challenges posed by my students, budget cuts and changes to
special-education policy have increased my workload drastically even
over just the past 18 months. While my class sizes have grown, support
staff members have been laid off. Students with increasingly severe
disabilities are being pushed into more mainstream classrooms like
mine, where they receive less individual attention and struggle to
adapt to a curriculum driven by state-designed high-stakes tests.

On top of all that, I’m a bad teacher. That’s not my opinion; it’s how
I’m labeled by the city’s Education Department. Last June, my
principal at the time rated my teaching “unsatisfactory,” checking off
a few boxes on an evaluation sheet that placed my career in limbo.
That same year, my school received an “A” rating. I was a bad teacher
at a good school. It was pretty humiliating.

Like most teachers, I’m good some days, bad others. The same goes for
my students. Last May, my assistant principal at the time observed me
teaching in our school’s “self-contained” classroom. A self-contained
room is a separate classroom for students with extremely severe
learning disabilities. In that room, I taught a writing class for
students ages 14 to 17, whose reading levels ranged from third through
seventh grades.

When the assistant principal walked in, one of these students, a
freshman girl classified with an emotional disturbance, began cursing.
When the assistant principal ignored her, she started cursing at me.
Then she began lobbing pencils across the room. Was this because I was
a bad teacher? I don’t know.

I know that after she began throwing things, I sent her to the dean’s
office. I know that a few days later, I received notice that my lesson
had been rated unsatisfactory because, among other things, I had sent
this student to the dean instead of following our school’s “guided
discipline” procedure.

I was confused. Earlier last year, this same assistant principal
observed me and instructed me to prioritize improving my “assertive
voice” in the classroom. But about a month later, my principal
observed me and told me to focus entirely on lesson planning, since
she had no concerns about my classroom management. A few weeks
earlier, she had written on my behalf for a citywide award for
“classroom excellence.” Was I really a bad teacher?

In my three years with the city schools, I’ve seen a teacher with 10
years of experience become convinced, after just a few observations,
that he was a terrible teacher. A few months later, he quit teaching
altogether. I collaborated with another teacher who sought psychiatric
care for insomnia after a particularly intense round of observations.
I myself transferred to a new school after being rated
“unsatisfactory.”

Behind all of this is the reality that teachers care a great deal
about our work. At the school where I work today, my “bad” teaching
has mostly been very successful. Even so, I leave work most days
replaying lessons in my mind, wishing I’d done something differently.
This isn’t because my lessons are bad, but because I want to get
better at my job.

In fact, I don’t just want to get better; like most teachers I know,
I’m a bit of a perfectionist. I have to be. Dozens and dozens of
teenagers scrutinize my language, clothing and posture all day long,
all week long. If I’m off my game, the students tell me. They comment
on my taste in neckties, my facial hair, the quality of my lessons.
All of us teachers are evaluated all day long, already. It’s one of
the most exhausting aspects of our job.

Teaching was a high-pressure job long before No Child Left Behind and
the current debates about teacher evaluation. These debates seem to
rest on the assumption that, left to our own devices, we teachers
would be happy to coast through the school year, let our skills
atrophy and collect our pensions.

The truth is, teachers don’t need elected officials to motivate us. If
our students are not learning, they let us know. They put their heads
down or they pass notes. They raise their hands and ask for

Hi Nareshji, After pasting the file to be uploaded in the public folder
open the context menu by right clicking or pressing the application key,
arrow down to dropbox submenu and open the same using right arrow, press
C and the public link is copied to the clipboard. You can paste this link
in the e mail. Ensure that you are connected to the internet when you are
performing this task. If the file to be uploaded is to large, wait for
some time till the file is fully uploaded before sending the link. You
can check the status of the uploading process by selecting the system

Subject: [AI] Being addressed as 'aap'

 Hello folks,

As usual, I have a really weird and unique question.
I have often observed that all my classmates, and even some of my
friends, address me as 'aap' instead of 'tu', which is how they
 address each other.
I somehow feel that this has something to do with my visual impairment.
Perhaps, my classmates find it hard to be as open with me as they are
with others, so they try to talk to me in a respectful manner in order
to ensure that I don't get offended in any way.
And I've observed that this is more applicable in the case of my
 female classmates.
So, what can I do to make them feel at ease and treat me in a normal
 manner?

 Best,
 Mohit

Re: [AI] Being addressed as 'aap'

2012-03-05 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
Interesting.
I do agree it has often to do with our visual impairment that people put us on
a distinct, maybe a higher pedestal.
The issue made me nostalgic when I entreated, urged, and quarreled with my
writer in tenth to call me TUM, as I called her, instead of AAP.
We were same age and she called all her friends as Tum or TOO, but not me...
She wanted to, attempted, rehearsed at home, but come what may, could not bring
herself to call me Tum.
Finally, I gave her ultimatum while dictating board exam of tenth class, on my
birthday, by stopping me in between and refusing to proceed until she corrected
herself.
I was ready to put my board exam in jeopardy!!
The impasse continued for about half an hour before she obliquely relented.

So, I too think the best way is to try to be one of them and reminding them
that visual impairment does not make us utterly distinct and worthy of respect
by default...

 Best,
 Mohit

Re: [AI] how to creat subtitles in dvd movies???

2012-03-05 Thread Mujtaba Merchant
Hello Timy,

This is comercially being addressed. There is a company in Bangalore called
digicaptions that does subtitles for movies mainly Hollywood. Having the
subtitles is going to become a rage soon as the movie can be appreciated across
the world without the language barrier. The movies can also be appreciated by
the hearing impaired. Although, that is not the main objective of captioning
the movie. I have a feeling that this can be turned into an employment
opportunity for the visually impaired. Need to explore more on how it is done
and how accessible the software used to do this is.

Sorry, this did not address your concern. Just wanted to shed some light on the
subject, hence my 2 cents on the same.

[AI] Differently-abled people seen as threat by aviation security

2012-03-05 Thread Vikas Kapoor
Differently-abled people seen as threat by aviation security
Aarti Dhar

Differently-abled people seen as threat by aviation security
Aarti Dhar
Share · print · T+ Share It's an outright insult, says Disabled
Rights Group

The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) regulations say that there is high
probability of differently-abled people carrying weapons, explosives and other
dangerous materials with them, and therefore, there is ample reason to be more
alert and wary.

The Disabled Rights Group (DRG) has described the regulations as disability
insensitive and outright insult and violation of the human rights of persons
with disability.

According to the regulations, Screeners should be thoroughly briefed that the
possibility of carrying weapons/explosives and other dangerous materials
through such passengers is higher than a normal passenger and therefore, these
passengers need to be checked with care.

RTI query

In reply to a query filed under the Right to Information by the DRG, the
Airports Authority of India said: There is no scope for leniency in respect of
invalid/disabled/sick persons during the pre-embarkation screening/procedures.
On the contrary, there is ample reason to be more alert and wary. As a result,
disabled passengers face undue harassment at the hands of untrained security
personnel. More often than not, disabled passengers using a wheelchair are
asked to stand up or transfer from their personal wheelchair to
sub-standard airport wheelchairs. What the security personnel do not know is
that most wheelchair users use customised wheelchairs and cushions.

The U.S. scenario

In contrast to the Indian scenario, the U.S. Transportation Security
Administration (TSA) has a dedicated helpline to assist travellers with
disabilities and medical conditions. Passengers can call 72 hours ahead of
travel for information about what to expect during screening.

TSA Cares serves as an additional, dedicated resource specifically for
passengers with disabilities, medical conditions or other circumstances or
their loved ones who want to be prepared for the screening process prior to
flying. When a passenger with a disability or medical condition calls it, a
representative either provides information about screening that is relevant to
the passenger's disability or medical condition, or refers him/her to
disability experts at the TSA.

Nowhere in the world will a disabled person be asked to take off leg braces,
or explain medical attachments like a leg bag that holds urine, said DRG
convener Javed Abidi.

Rights violation

This is not only humiliating but a violation of human rights. We are not
asking for any leniency in security procedures. After all, civilised nations of
the world have developed systems to ensure that disabled passengers are frisked
with due respect to their dignity, he noted.

Although, Directorate of Civil Aviation guidelines clearly mention that a
passenger is allowed to take her/his own wheelchair to the boarding gates,
security personnel bully those who are not aware of their rights.

What is even more shameful and embarrassing is that countries that have a
greater security threat and stricter security programmes have defined
guidelines for screening passengers with disability. At no airport in the U.S.,
the U.K., the European Union and even countries like South Africa, Malaysia,
Hong Kong, Korea, Thailand, and UAE will a disabled passenger using a
wheelchair be asked to 'get up' from her/his wheelchair, Mr. Abidi said.

[AI] Harassment of the disabled people by the Airlines .

2012-03-05 Thread purnima jain
Hi Akilesh ,I really don't think that the sections you mentioned would
apply in these cases .However the point which I wanted to raise was
that there is no specific law which would declare these acts as
offences .You may be aware that the Parliament has enacted a statute
for SC/ST namely the Protection of Civil Rights etc I don't remember
the exact name .This was done to make the provision under Article 17
more effective which deals with untouchability .I am of the view that
if we are provided protection under the Constitution than it would
make such acts of harassments an act infringing the fundamental right
.Apart from this I had argued that a separate law should be enacted
where there would be specific provisions defining the offence
,providing penalty ,making provisions for protection offecers to deal
with such issues etc as has been done in the above mentioned Act.
