2019-04-17 Thread timy sebastian ettumanoor
Hi dear friend,

Please try this method:,

1. Focus the comment.

2. press alt key and navigate to insert menu, and press enter over there.

Press tab until jaws announce, comment and, press enter there.

Now, once the comment pain got activated, activate the context menu.

You will get the extra options such as, reply to comment, delete comment etc.

Press enter on delete comment, the comment will disappear, from your document.

Note:, jaws will not give any conformation message, while deleting the comment.

Please try the above step and let me know.

Thanks in advance,

Timy.

Note:, Iam using office 2019, hope this will be same for 2016 as well.

Re: [AI] UDID portal-audio captcha status

2019-04-09 Thread timy sebastian ettumanoor
Hi, glad to sea this kind of discussion in our access Indian family.

Yesterday I was telling about the question based capture.

Yes, this type of capture is really accessible to visually impaired
users and, it should be only in text based question, should not be
like some, image or something else.

One of the kerala website, I have seen these kind of question based
capture like I mentioned yesterday,

the benefit of this capture is, no need to provide our mobile number
in the website and, the capture is so safe as well.

How we can asure that, the OTP capture will work always?

no, we cannot.

The questions should be simple and, easy to answer as well.

For example:,

Who is the prime minester in India?

how much is 2 + 2?

Yes, this will work if someone will implement this type of capture in
the website, no doubt.

Hope for the best.

With regards your friend,

Timy.

Hi,

my suggestion is that, instead of audio capture, solving some
questions will help the screen reader user to complete there task
without any issues.

I have seen this practice in one of the kerala site and, really I
like that approach.

2019-01-29 Thread timy sebastian ettumanoor
Thanks for the reply.

I don't no, why, more than 14 days took to activate my account.

Yes, really it is strange and, irritating.

We should fource theRBI to create a proper roole for the account
creation for the bvisually impaired in any bank.

If I didn't follow properly, I AM sure that, they will simply ignore
my account creation.

So, Dear BGFI and other organization who is working for the visually
impaired, I request you people to take this matter very ceriously, and
if possible, please conduct some awareness classes for the different
banks staf.

Re: [AI] Report on Accessible notes

2018-08-19 Thread Timy Sebastian
Hi all,

In my view, Along with different shape and size, A braille kind of
marking should be present specially in the notes as well as coins.

No doubt, both will be helpful for a blind person for identifying
notes/coins easly

Note:, the braille kind of projection is alternative and, cannot depend always.

I have seen one of the plastic kind of note which is printed in other
country, and, it is easly identifiable to blind person through braille
embossing, so, that is also a welcome suggestion

The benefit of plastic kind of note is, the braille kind of projection
will remain long time!!

Remember friends,

Something is better than nothing.

Hope some changes soon.

Hi all,

I also use xl sinuma today and notice that, it was a wonderful
experience for watching a movie with audio description.

Watch showlay movie with audio description directly from the youtube.

No doubt, Sukshom team done there part well we can say.

the sad think is that, only two movies are available under movies section.

we xl sinuma users are expecting all regional language movies in the future.

The interesting thing is that, after muting the audio of the movie as
well, we can listen the audio description without any problem.
No doubt, that experience is excelllant.

One suggestion is:,

Without connecting the headphone also, we want to listen the audio
description, if possible.

Hope that facility will be available in the future versions.

[AI] Sharing some of my bad experiences as a visually impaired person when I aproach sbt bank reasonly, for applying netbanking and checking my ATM card currend status!!!!

2016-12-30 Thread Timy Sebastian

Hi friends, hope all are enjoying your holidays.

after a long time Iam writing a mail to access india.

Reasonly, I when to sbt bank in kerala for applying net banking facility
and checking my ATM card validity.

When I give my ATM card to check it validity there, they told that there
swiping machine is showing that, the account holder is a visually
impaired person, and the transaction is got failed.

here my question is:, how the transaction get failed, if the account
holder is visually impaired person?

not able to understand that logic.

not only that, when I applyed for the net banking facility, they
provide me the net banking kit after asking that, are you able to do the
same? I told her, yes, of cource, Iam working in hcl company in noida,
with the help of screen reader and everything I well explained to them,
but, after half an hour, they call me and told me that, when they
contacted there help desk team, they told them that, the visually
impaired person cannot do the internet banking, if he wants to use the
same, he has to produce a letter, and the letter contents should be
like, as a visually impaired person, I will be responsible for anything
happend to my account, and the bank doesn't have any responsibility in
the future etc, etc.

First I agreed,

But, after that I contacted some of my friends and they told me that,
don't give any letter like they said.

then I call me them back and told that, Sorry mam, there is an RBI
circular is saying that, whatever facility that should be provided to
visually impaired person without any discrimination, and so many blind
people are using the same, and so many blind people are working in the
banking sector as well.

then she replyed that, that I know there is a circular, but, the there
is no braille facility is available for using internet banking, that is
the reason we are saying that.

I told her that, if your having any doubt like this, you have to ask the
organization, which is working for the wellfare of the blind community,
not to your help desk team.

They doesn't no what the visually impaired person can do, see mam, am
also working in one of the MNC company that is HCl, I already told you
before.

again if your saying that you need some kinds of letter like your told,
I will share some of my blind friends those who are working in banking
sector, and my organization people wil contact you soon, then the
cituvation totaly will get change, I said, now tell me, is letter required?

then she replyed that, no sir, I Will do the needful, don't worry.

Finally, net banking is get activated in my account today!!.

Here, I would like to share some suggestions regarding these kinds of
issues.

in the training time, the hier authorities should teach the trainies,
how to deal with a visually impaired custamer, and which are the
facilities they can provide them respectively, then only these kinds of
issues we can avoid in the future.

2. All managers/ officers should have clear idea about, what are the
facilities vi custamer can use without any trouble.

Thanks for reading my mail and suggestions.

With regards,

Timy Sebastian.

[AI] some doubts in html codes, experts please reply

2015-07-17 Thread timy sebastian ettumanoor

dear friends, hope all are fine.

someone please tell me, how can we make radio buttons or combo box
status read by our screen readers?

for examble in a combo box, it should read like this,

year: combo box, january, 1 of 12.

if it is a radio button, it should read like this,

male radio button not checked, 1 of 2, female radio button checked, 2 of 2.

experts please tell me which are the code we can use for this?

an another doubt is:

once we submit a form, we should get the alert if we missed something,
for examble,

 Think for a while,
I have given 5 dijets, instead of my 10 dijit mobile number and submit
to any of the free sms sending website, then I should get this dialog box:,

alert, 5 dijets are missing, please type the ten dijet numbers and
retry, ok button.

here also I would like to know which is the suitable html code for this.

expecting answers from our experts at the earliest.

with regards your friend,
Timy.

[AI] Visually impaired boy dons role of TV news presenter

2015-05-02 Thread timy sebastian

taken from the hindu/thamil nadu.

It was more than a dream come true for 10-year-old visually impaired
schoolgoer T. Sriramanujam to don the role of a news presenter on
television. At 5pm
on Friday, the boy became probably the first visually impaired
newsreader in a satellite television channel based at Coimbatore. I was
trembling with
fear when I read the first news. But, on reading it, I gained confidence
and read the remaining 30 news items in my half-hour slot covering
topics such
as national, sports and entertainment news, he said. The news team of
the channel extended support to the boy to help him learn the art of
reading news
over the last three days, before the news was finally recorded on
Friday. The boy from Paraipatti village in Palani is the son of a couple
who are farmers.
He started listening to news from the time he turned nine-years-old. The
boy, who is now staying in a hostel at Thondamuthur, studies with 22
students
in the government school for visually impaired students. Overjoyed by
the opportunity he said he would read news for the channel at 5pm on
Fridays. G.K.S.
Selvakumar, Chairman of Lotus News Channel, said that the channel became
the first to introduce a transgender as a news reader. The transgender
reader
Padmini Prakash (40) reads news at the 7pm slot everyday. Following
successful outcome of the earlier attempt, we made an attempt to involve
a visually
impaired news reader, he told The Hindu. It was then the idea of
involving a school student struck him. We have seen many families where
visually impaired
children are not sent to school. Those boys and girls, denied education,
were left to depend on others for a living, he said and expressed
confidence
that such parents would be motivated by Sriramanujam. The news team had
to play a very important role in making this effort successful. While a
team was
preparing Braille scripts for the boy, the other trained him to face the
camera though he could not see the cameras, lights and the recording
process —

and it was quite a challenge for them too.

[AI] How Technology is Helping this Visually Impaired Journalist See and Report

2015-03-06 Thread timy sebastian
Only last night, I finished reading ‘Lights Out’, a brutally honest book
by my former journalist colleague L Subramani, who has written about
gradually going blind at 18 from a degenerative retinal disease called
Retinitis Pigmentosa; and this morning, I have this sudden desperate
desire to speak to him. I manage to get his number from a common friend
and call hesitatingly; it’s been 10 years and I am sure he has forgotten
who I am. “Hi Mani, I’m sure you don’t remember me,” I begin. “Hey
Rachna!” he cuts me short, and a smile touches me all the way from
Bengaluru. “Of course I remember your voice. I used to like it.”

Mani

If I don’t mince words with politically correct phrases; I can tell you
bluntly that Mani is completely blind. He wasn’t born that way but
that’s how he was when I met him in ‘Deccan Herald’; walking around the
office with a cane, running into furniture sometimes, cracking jokes,
editing reports, sharing coffee when the evening kapi cart came rolling
down. Oh yes! Even accidentally sitting on a skinny young intern’s lap
once (an incident that alarmed him more than it alarmed her). Tall,
broad shouldered, gentle and soft spoken; slightly bent and with a
hesitant walk because he was extra careful about not walking into
something or someone; that was Mani as I knew him.

A little later into the conversation when I pull his leg about how he
couldn’t possibly have recognised my voice after all these years, Mani
tells me I’m wrong. “For me, hearing a voice after 10 years is just like
seeing an old friend walk down the road is for you. It might have aged a
little or acquired a new texture and tone; but unless it has changed
drastically, I will recognise it.”

*Mani’s story*

Read his book and you will know him better than my article can tell you.
It’s the amazing story of a kid who faced impending blindness with grit
and, more importantly, came out of it with his dreams, his zest for life
and his sense of humour intact.

At 15, as a young schoolboy who was called four eyes by his classmates
because he wore glasses, Mani couldn’t believe what his ophthalmologist
told him gently after a routine check up: that he would be going blind
slowly. It might happen in a year, or two or more, but it would happen.
His mother’s faith in God’s curative powers had Mani being made “to beg
for forgiveness and be cured” by astrologers, swamis, godmen and even
rolling in a wet dhoti at the Kannudaya Nayaki temple of the devi who is
believed to be the protector of eyes.

Nothing worked. He slowly started having flashes of blindness –
sometimes on his way to school. Once when he was getting in a cinema
hall with his classmates for a film show and once walking back home from
a temple after dark. As his eyesight slowly started failing, Mani
underwent a terrible phase. He would see flashes of light and then
complete darkness. His vision was blurring. He started losing
confidence. He would walk with a stoop, so that if he fell he wouldn’t
be hurt so badly; he would go around with knees bent in apprehension,
fearing he would bang into something; he would live in constant fear
that his eyesight would go completely. “If anyone had told me earlier
that blindness would come as a relief, I would have laughed at him. But,
at that time, anything seemed better than this hell,” he says,
confessing that he welcomed his blindness when it finally claimed him at
18 years of age. And that is where Mani’s book ends; but if you ask me,
that is where his real story began.

*Zero technology days*

Mani

Mani tells me that when he started looking for a job, the top option for
him was to become a telephone operator in a bank. “It was a popular
career for blind people since it gave you a regular salary though there
would not be any promotions. For me, it was completely uninspiring.” A
chance to edit documents translated into English from Japanese came his
way since he knew Japanese, but it was boring too. “My trip in life
wasn’t about earning money,” he says. Sports journalism was where his
heart was set but the first question editors asked him when he went
looking for work was: How will you do it? It was a difficult question to
answer but eventually he showed them how.

Right from 1998, when he first went looking for a journalism job, all
the way to 2003; Mani worked without any accessible technology. He would
sit at tennis matches and ask for the shots to be described to him. “I
could hear the ball. And since I had seen tennis in my school days I
could visualize the shot when someone said it was a forehand cross court
or it was a drop shot, I already knew what these were, and it was easy
for me to file reports.” When he started reporting hockey, it was an
even bigger challenge. David, who used to report sports for the ‘New
Indian Express’ encouraged him to do it. “He suggested I bring an alarm
clock to

[AI] A smart way to avoid communication overload

2015-02-09 Thread timy sebastian

the hindu.

She doesn't want to own a smartphone. So, is something wrong with her?
Certainly not; she's just another person who has chosen her own space
over the constant
urge to check the Facebook page every other minute on the phone.
Smartphones, for a while now, have been on the list of basic needs of
youngsters, and
anyone who doesn't use them is considered 'left behind'. However, those
like Asaithambi (21), a major in BCA, think that without a smartphone to
hamper
them, they are actually a little ahead of the rest. Contrary to the
notion that communication gets harder without smartphones, their absence
actually seems
to make for better person-to-person interaction. 'I don't use a mobile
phone at all and it doesn't affect my communication in any way,” she
says. Youngsters
who stay away from smartphones say they do set apart time for browsing
the Internet, but do not want it to become their life. It is just not
attractive
enough for them. Meryl (19), for instance, says she wouldn't own an
iPhone even if it came for free. And, according to 25-year-old Preetha,
an 'addiction
to smartphones among my peers only scares me away from owning one.” Even
newly-converted users are not completely sold on the advantages.
Shivashankari
(18), who recently bought a smart device, says, 'I thought smartphones
were a lot of fun, but now that I've got one, I have realised it does
not live up
to the hype.” Focus on print-challenged The needs of the
print-challenged are coming into sharp focus. Karna Vidya Technology
Centre put up a stall at
the recent Chennai Book Fair to highlight the requirements of the
disabled and also the market potential for publishers to look at finding
new customers.
'More than ever before, there are several technologies on computers and
other smart devices that help the disabled access books,” says K.
Raghuraman of
Karna Vidya. 'There are screen readers that allow people to understand
and appreciate text. The time has come for inclusive publishing of all
material,”
he says. Though there is still some focus on Braille embossing of books,
the future lies in text-to-speech technology and publishing needs to be
done digitally.
A bulk of Tamil publishing still happens in print formats, but digital
formats — like EPUB — are catching up. Audio books in formats such as
DAISY (Digital
Accessible Information System) are preferred by the visually impaired.
Popular screen reader software like Non Visual Desktop Access (NVDA) and
Job Access
with Speech (JAWS) are gaining widespread acceptance among users. B.
Malarkodi, a volunteer at Kottivakkam's Worth Digitising, accesses
Kalki's Ponniyin
Selvan in DAISY audio book format through Bookshare (www.bookshare.com),
the online lending library for the print-disabled. The Western voice
synthesiser
makes the Tamil sound strange but she gets it. 'I understand it, but am
sure you don't,” she laughs. (Reporting by Haritha Mohan and Karthik
Subramanian)

[AI] Helping the visually impaired read Tamil

2015-01-31 Thread timy sebastian

source:,

the hindu.com, thamil nadu.

When she proofreads books, B. Malarkodi knows she is opening up vistas
she did not have access to in school or college. The visually-impaired
proofreader
is part of a team at the Worth Digitisation centre in Kottivakkam that
converts books to Braille. What makes the not-for-profit organisation, a
part of
the Worth Trust group, all the more interesting is its ability to
convert Tamil books to Braille. A not-so-simple task considering there
is just a handful
of optical character recognition (OCR) software available in the market.
Most of them do not have a high accuracy level when it comes to
identifying the
Tamil script and converting it to digital format. At Worth Trust, the
workers, all of who are disabled in some way, use an OCR software
developed at the
medical intelligence and language engineering (MILE) lab of the Indian
Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru. The OCR software, developed by
a team
headed by A.G. Ramakrishnan of the department of electrical engineering
at IISc, is considered to be one of the best for Tamil, and has been
provided free
of cost to Worth Digitisation. Several blind students approach Worth
Digitisation for conversion of Tamil books to Braille. Most of these
requests are
for textbooks and other academic work. The organisation charges students
only the cost of the A3-sized paper on which the Braille embossing is
done, at
the rate of Rs. 6 per page. Ms. Malarkodi handles the last part of a
chain of work by the team. It starts with scanning the books, then using
OCR to digitise
the text, then converting the digitised text using software like
Duxburry Braille Translator, and eventually embossing the books. The
project has been
active from 2008, but awareness has grown only in recent times. With the
help of MILE lab's OCR software, the number of books being converted has
also
increased substantially. They used to emboss 10 books a month some years
back but today they are able to handle between 100 to 150 books a month.
Worth
Digitising has also taken up converting popular Tamil magazines into
Braille. Publications such as women's magazine Mangayar Malar and
children's magazine
Chutti Vikatan are being converted. Malarkodi remembers the first Tamil

[AI] Using Google Glass, Elementary Students Learn How Blind People Live!!!!!!!

2015-01-30 Thread timy sebastian

Source :,

http://www.fastcompany.com/3041196/body-week/using-google-glass-elementary-students-learn-how-blind-people-live

Forget Glassholes. A new program using Google Glass helps students
develop empathy, set goals, and achieve digital literacy.

By Mary Pilon

Ever since its introduction three years ago, Google
http://www.fastcompany.com/company/google Glass has endured
http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/05/03/the-shine-starts-wears-off-google-glass/?_r=0
more than its share of haters
http://www.fastcodesign.com/3025586/google-glass-gets-more-fashionable-but-not-fashionable-enough.
While many Glassholes lamented the announcement earlier this month
that Google would end consumer sales of the face-computer-slash-eyewear,
others eagerly eulogized the Segway of spectacles.

But Glass still has plenty of non-consumer applications
http://www.fastcompany.com/3040788/google-glass-is-not-dead-yet-augmedix-a-glass-for-doctors-startup-raises-16-million
for its technology. One of Glass’s more unusual and poignant uses was
well underway on a recent weekday morning in Julieann Cappuccino
http://www.fastcompany.com/person/julieann-cappuccino’s fifth grade
Northwood Academy Charter School
http://www.fastcompany.com/organization/northwood-academy-charter-school
classroom in North Philadelphia. There, students clustered around iPads
and laptops, completing another lesson in a multi-month curriculum using
video and insights from Glass to learn about, of all things, blindness.

We can see what he doesn’t, Bryce Stevens, a student said, pointing to
a map of the Olympic Training Center
http://www.fastcompany.com/organization/olympic-training-center in
Chula Vista, Calif. Stevens and his teammates were trying to chart a
course using beacons for Lex Gillette
http://www.fastcompany.com/person/lex-gillette, a blind Paralympic
silver medalist. He shows us how he uses his phone, runs on the track,
and walks around. It’s like we’re there.

Lex Gillette

The concept is a bit counterintuitive. Gillette wears Glass, records
video, and then sends a feed to roughly 120 students in California,
Philadelphia, Indiana, and Louisiana. They then prepare questions for
him (What is your favorite color? How do you achieve success? or Do
you drink coffee?) and via video chat, and Gillette answers them while
offering demonstrations of how he goes about his day.

The larger goal, according to organizers with Classroom Champions
http://www.classroomchampions.org/, a nonprofit focused on connecting
Olympic and Paralympic athletes with students at high-need schools, is
to use Glass to increase children’s empathy and goal-setting skills.

When I first heard about this, I thought ‘How is this going to work?’
Cindy Carey, Northwood's principal for fifth through eighth grade, said.
But since implementing the Glass program at the start of this year, she
said she’s been pleased with the results. It’s fostered such a sense of
community with the kids. They really feel connected to him.

In April, Google put a call out to nonprofits for ways in which they
would use Glass to pursue their mission. Five winners would receive a
free pair of the glasses, a trip to Google for training and a $25,000 grant.

Steve Mesler http://www.fastcompany.com/person/steve-mesler, an
Olympic gold medalist bobsledder and chief executive of Classroom
Champions http://www.fastcompany.com/company/classroom-champions, said
he heard about the proposal from a board member and Gillette immediately
came to mind.

Gillette said he was interested, and realized that the students he would
be mentoring were roughly the same age he was when he lost his vision.

I thought the idea was amazing, Gillette said. I wanted to give the
insight into my daily life and change their perceptions of how they
viewed blind people. But I also wondered if I was going to look like
someone on /Star Trek/.

Typically, Classroom Champions had relied on Google Hangouts, video
lessons, social media http://www.fastcompany.com/explore/social-media,
and in-person athlete visits to pair Olympians and classrooms. Last year
during the Olympics, 3,925 students in 44 schools engaged in the video
chats, alone. Classroom Champions submitted its application along with
more than 1,300 nonprofits and 500 developers and was one of five
winners announced in July.

We were impressed by Lex's ability to mentor and inspire students
through his work with Classroom Champions, Jessica Sapick, a marketing
manager with Giving Through Glass, said. Their proposal to let students
see the world from Lex's perspective worked well with Glass, since it
also allows you to share your point of view with the world.

95% of teachers who participated in Classroom Champions said that the
program improved their students’ digital literacy.

Mesler said he doesn’t anticipate the cancellation of Glass consumer
sales to stall his program. In fact, he’s hoping there may be excess

[AI] Controversy As 12 Year Old Girl Accuses Blind Guardian Of Raping Her!!!!

2014-09-12 Thread timy sebastian

Sourse:

http://teebhabzie.wordpress.com/2014/08/19/controversy-as-12-year-old-girl-accuses-blind-guardian-of-raping-her/

The police in Lagos are investigating a visually
impaired man who has been accused of rape by a 12-
year-old minor (names withheld).
While some policemen at the Satellite Town Police
Division found it difficult to believe that a blind man
was capable of raping someone who had no problem
with her sight, others insisted that the minor was too
young to lie.
The Network on Police Reform in Nigeria, a non-
governmental organisation, felt that the indecision by
the police was a way to bury the case at the expense
of the victim.
It was gathered that the minor started work
as housemaid with the visually-impaired man,
identified simply as Kingsley, in January 2014. It was
said that the agreement was that Kingsley, who is
married with three children, would sponsor the
minor through school while she would assist the
household with domestic chores.
Trouble, however, started when the minor was
unceremoniously returned to her aunt last month on
account of what her guardians termed her unruly
behaviour and her tendency to always run away from
home whenever she was scolded for wrongdoing.
But the minor told the aunt that she ran away from
home after Kingsley raped her. The furious aunt was
said to have invited the police at the Satellite Town
Police Division and Kingsley was arrested.
Narrating the incident to the police, the minor said, I
ran away from home because daddy (Kingsley)
attempted to rape me a second time.
Before I ran away he had called me into his room to
help him read a text message from his phone. In the
process, he forcefully had sex with me. I ran away
when he attempted to rape me another time.
But the suspect said the minor's claim was false. He
wondered how possible it was for a blind man to
rape a girl who could have escaped.
He said that the minor was scolded for
wrongdoing and she did not return until the next day.
Kingsley said, The rape was an afterthought by the
minor's aunt to punish me for returning her
unceremoniously. It is a set up. The girl in question
could hardly read or write. As a blind person, my
phone is enabled with a software package that
enables me to make calls and read text messages
without assistance. When she ran away, it was our
landlord that brought her the following day. She did
not mention anything about rape as her reason for
running away.
She and her aunt must have cooked up the rape
issue to punish me. The medical test that allegedly
proved that she was defiled was conducted when
doctors were on strike. I will want this matter to be
taken to court because my name has been smeared.
However, NOPRIN said the police had compromised
on the investigation.
A statement by NOPRIN National Coordinator,
Okechukwu Nwanguma, said, Curiously, the police
are the ones echoing the argument that the alleged
rapist is visually impaired as if that will negate the
possibility that he could have committed the offence.
But the state Deputy Police Public Relations Officer,
Lelma Kolle, denied any complicity by the police,
saying justice would take its course.
He said, The matter was first reported at the Satellite
Police Division and the suspect was arrested. He was
granted bail because of his condition. The incident
has been transferred and is still under investigation
at the State Criminal Investigation Department.

[AI] Using YouTube with a screen reader

2014-09-01 Thread timy sebastian

 Introduction

This following information will be helpful for people using screen
readers as it explains the steps for using YouTube with screen readers.
A screen reader is a software application that identifies and interprets
what is being displayed on the computer screen. This information is then
presented to a blind user as speech. Visually impaired or blind people
use screen readers. This article provides step-by-step process for using
YouTube making it easier for a new user to explore YouTube.

lightbulb icon *Please note:* The experience of using YouTube may not be
same with all screen readers due to inconsistency of support of
technology by the various screen readers. To learn more about using
YouTube with a screen reader that supports Adobe Flash accessibility
extensions, please see this accessibility feedback page
http://www.google.com/accessibility.

Read on to learn more about using YouTube with a screen-reader and
discover which keyboard shortcuts are available for the site:

 Creating a YouTube account

A Google account is needed to sign in to YouTube (ex. Gmail or Calendar
etc.). If you do not have a Google account then you can go ahead and
create one using the following steps:

1. Go to www.youtube.com http://www.youtube.com/
2. Click the create account link (located at the top of the page
   after the search button).
3. Complete the requested steps. Once you've signed up you'll have an
   account and can get started.

Having an account allows you to sign into YouTube and take advantage of
YouTube's community features. You can upload videos, comment on videos,
save videos to playlists etc.. These are just a few of the benefits of
signing up for a YouTube account. You do not need to sign in to use some
/basic/ features of YouTube. Such as, searching for videos, viewing
videos etc..

 Searching YouTube and Search Results

   /Searching for YouTube videos/

1. Navigate to www.youtube.com
2. Navigate to the search edit box at the top of the page.
*Please note*: Though the search edit box does not have a label,
it is located at the top of the page, has a search button after
it, and is the only edit box on this page.

3. Type a search term and press enter.

   /Search results/

 * The search results page has a did you mean section which
suggests proper words if you misspelled the word(s).

 * Prior to the search results, various sorting options are
provided to help you sort through the results.

 * Each of the search results has the following information:

1. A title of the video along with the duration of the video
which is a link and a graphic. Hence, navigating using
graphics would help navigating to and through the results
quicker. Clicking on this will play the video.
2. A + sign which is link. Clicking on this will play the
   video as well.
3. The text added to queue.
4. The title of the video which is also a link. Clicking on it
will play the video as well.
5. A snippet of the video.
6. Name of the individual who posted the video.
7. How many years ago the video was uploaded and the number of
views it has had so far.

Sometimes you will find a heading level 2, Related
searches with heading level 3s below it. These are other
search categories related to the search term(s) you typed.
Clicking any of these search categories will take you to

[AI] Visually impaired pull off prize-winning march

2014-08-16 Thread timy sebastian
Students of Shree Ramana Maharishi Academy for the Blind at the
IndependenceDay parade in Manekshaw Parade grounds on Friday

Mumbai Mirror
Maruthi K N was 11 when a bout of typhoid took away his vision. A large
number of surgeries could not restore the light in his dark world. Now
23, he was eagerness personified as he prepared to take part with the
team from the Shree Ramana Maharishi Academy for the Blind at J P Nagar,
in the Independence Day parade held at Manekshaw Parade grounds. Draped
in the red-and-yellow team uniform, he said, I know the look of awe
people have when they see a parade because I have seen it before. But
for me now, the satisfaction is in hearing the thunderous applause the
audience gives when we parade in front of them.

The students at SRMAB prepared for over a month for the day. Their
coach, Thimmaiah, who is also their mobility and physical education
teacher, spent at least three hours with them every day, teaching them
things such as uniform marching and 90 degree turning - things that are
basic for the visually gifted. Thimmaiah said, Since most of the
students cannot see, we place in the front the partially-sighted ones
who hold long canes which the students can hold in a line till the back.
This way, the students at the back know when to take turns. Then we have
to teach them to raise their arm and legs in unison with the rest of the
contingent at a certain angle. But it is very pleasant to see the
students pick up the activities as fast as the visually gifted students,
and of course it is a matter of pride to see them perform this well in
the Independence Day parades.

Thimmaiah has been with the school since 1992 and they have been taking
part in the parades for the past 22 years. Except for thrice - when we
came second twice and third once - we have bagged the first place 41
times including the Republic Day parade. This is the 41st time we have
received the trophy and that is no small feat, said Thimmaiah holding
the trophy for first place in the specially-abled category.

S Eshwarappa, 18, was born blind and has never known the riot of colours
that surface during Independence Day celebration. He said, I have been
blind since birth and while I do not know what the celebrations look
like, I do like the sound of applause. That encourages me to take part
in each parade year after year. When Thimmaiah Sir asked me to take part
in the parade for the first time, I thought it was a very difficult
task. But he showed us the way and today we have come this far only
because of him. I could never imagine visually impaired people taking
part in such celebrations, but Thimmaiah Sir and the entire team at
SRMAB have made it possible.

The five-foot deep ditch in front of EnAble India on Sarjapur Road,
Koramangala I block, into which Timy Sebastian fell headlong and broke
his arm
A 31-year-old blind youth was lucky to survive with a broken arm after
falling headlong into a 5-foot deep ditch; now he has taken on BBMP's
callousness with an FIR
Even for a person with 20/20 vision, it is quite a feat to safely
cross the three-foot wide, uncovered shoulder drain just outside the
commercial building that houses EnAble India, a charitable trust for
persons with disability, located on Sarjapura Road in Koramangala I
block near Wipro Junction. Imagine then, the plight of a blind person
who uses a white cane to move around.

Misfortune struck Timy Sebastian, a 31-year-old blind postgraduate
from Kerala, who had come to the city to attend a computer training
programme at EnAble, when he fell inside the five-foot deep drain and
suffered a fractured humerus on the right arm and underwent a surgery.

While EnAble is housed in the second floor, the building is also
occupied by a medical transcription company, Lake System, in the first
floor. Concerned over the difficulties being faced by the visually
impaired people coming to EnAble India, staff at the medical
transcription company had made repeated requests to cover the shoulder
drain which was kept open for almost two months for desilting work.
Had the BBMP not turned a blind eye to the dangers of the uncovered
drain, Timy wouldn't have faced such a near disastrous mishap. And in
a pointer to its callousness, the spot where the mishap occurred is
still lying partially uncovered, even though Timy's visually impaired
friends are still frequenting the EnAble trust.

MISHAP MOCKS AT HC RULING

Timy, a native of Kottayam in Kerala, had come to Koramangala to
attend the training programme two months ago. He was put up at a
paying guest accommodation in the vicinity, which was almost one
kilometre away. Though completely blind, he is independent and uses a
white cane for mobility.

He is also comfortable using public transport as well as other
facilities. On July 25, around 12.30 pm, Timy had finished his class
at the institute and was stepping out to have lunch. Descending from
the steps and stretching his cane out to find his way on the road,
Timy noticed his cane wasn't coming in contact with solid ground. But
alas, it was too late to prevent that fall, said Timy's family members
speaking to BM from Kerala.

He fell headlong into the almost five-foot deep drain and broke his
right arm. Hearing his shouts for help, the owner of a departmental
store on the ground floor of the same building came running out and
rescued Timy. He was rushed to a nearby private hospital where he
underwent surgery and was hospitalised for almost five days. Since he
has been advised bed rest for almost two months, Timy was brought back
home to Kerala. The victim has also filed an FIR against the concerned
BBMP officials with the Koramangala police, the family members added.

The mishap occurred just two days after the High Court of Karnataka
ruled that pavements are the exclusive domain of walkers. The court,
on a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by city activists Jennifer
Pinto and Priya Pinto, had directed the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara
Palike (BBMP) to remove all encroachments on footpaths within the next
three months. Specifically, the court empowered the civic agency to
clear obstructions to make the city pedestrian-friendly. But looks
like instead of clearing obstructions, BBMP seems to be putting them
up, as seen in the unfortunate incident involving Timy.

When contacted, Jennifer told BM, Timy Sebastian's case indeed
vindicates our stand. In fact the Association for the Visually
Challenged had impleaded in our PIL. I appreciate Sebastian's decision
to file a police complaint as people normally forget and move on. I
think sooner than later the court must make BBMP responsible for such
mishap and improper footpaths across Bangalore.

In another five days, Timy would have completed the training. He has
already found a job in a software firm for which the training was
mandatory. He would have been placed in any of the firms either in
Kerala or Bangalore from August. But now, we do not know what will
happen. After Timy recovers, he will be sent back to complete the
training. We are hoping that at least by then, the open shoulder drain
will be covered, his family members rued.

His medical expenses have totaled nearly Rs 1 lakh, which we have had
to bear. We hope this amount will be reimbursed to us since Timy was
an innocent victim, they added.

Sunil, the owner of the departmental store who had rescued Timy, said
that work was going on for the last

[AI] Physically-challenged girl mauled to death by dogs

2014-07-21 Thread Timy Sebastian
if this is the case, I don't no, how we visually impaired people will
escape from streat dogs, specially in banglore and other places.

please read the news from below and understand how cruel it is.

Physically-challenged girl mauled to death by dogs

 Special Correspondent

In a gruesome incident, a 17-year-old mentally and
physically-challenged girl was mauled to death by a pack of six stray
dogs at Kotha Venkojipalem in the city on Monday morning. The deceased
was identified as Mary alias Nookaratnam, daughter of Appala Reddy and
Lakshmi.

Apart from being mentally and physically challenged, she was both
speech and hearing impaired. Because of all the illness, the girl was
very thin, just about three-feet tall and was totally immobile.

While her father works as a security guard, mother adds to the family
income by serving as a domestic help. It was the duty of the couple to
feed the girl in the morning and leave her in a makeshift cradle in
the verandah of their hut, before going to work.

At about 10.30 a.m. on Monday, six stray dogs attacked and mauled her
to death. The pathetic thing was that she was neither able to fight
back nor scream for help. They even pulled her down from the cradle
and tried to drag her into the bushes, adjoining the hutment.
According to a neighbour, Ramalakshmi, “Whenever, she would feel
hungry, the girl would cry. When I heard her cry, I thought that she
was hungry. But when it continued for some time, I came and out and
saw six dogs dragging her away. I tried to chase the dogs away, but
they attacked me also. I called for help, and a few others joined in
chasing the dogs away. But by that time Mary was dead and her body was
torn open at various places.”

According to Appalanaidu, a neighbour, the dog menace has increased in
the hutment located on the hill slopes after GVMC let loose some dogs
in the neighbouring cremation ground, about a month ago. “The dogs
returned to lick the blood even after the body was taken away by the
police for post-mortem. We are afraid, since we have small children,”
he said.

[AI] Braille isn’t ‘embattled’

2014-05-23 Thread timy sebastian

sourse:

http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-opinion/braille-isnt-embattled/article6038895.ece

Imagine a situation where you walk into your favourite restaurant and
ask for the menu, only to be told it isn’t available. Chances are it
wouldn’t stay your favourite for very long.

As a braillist — someone who uses braille — the dream for me is when the
opposite happens. A small number of chain restaurants offer menus in
braille; sometimes, they’re even up to date.

It is difficult to over-express the sense of liberation at being able to
browse and choose your preferred pizza independently. And in Co-op
supermarkets, where some of the own-brand labels feature braille, there
is pride in being able to identify a bottle of wine from a label that
few if any other people in the store are able to read.

All too often, though, finding anything in shops is a matter of random
selection, peering in earnest, or asking for help. And just when it
seemed the situation couldn’t get any worse for braillists, along come
headlines suggesting the end is nigh for braille, that this
communication lifeline is about to be cut off.

This week, Dr Matthew Rubery, curator of an exhibition on alternative
methods of reading for blind people, described braille as “embattled.”
He went on to say its biggest threat “is computer technology, which
makes it much easier not to have to learn it. A lot of people fear
braille won’t survive because it will be read by so few people. The use
has declined and there are concerns about funding to keep it going.”

This seems to me a rather glass-half-empty view, although there is some
evidence to support his argument. Anecdotally, it is claimed blind
children are no longer being taught braille. This is said to be owing to
sighted teachers who believe computer technology, and in particular
synthesised speech, has rendered it redundant. Therefore, the teachers
don’t need to learn braille either.

If this is true, and no other factors were to come into play, then the
outlook might really look bad. But, like print, braille has gone through
a process of evolution. It started out in classrooms as the equivalent
of the slate — my five-year-old hands punched out each dot individually
through a sheet of thick manilla paper. We learned to write it backwards
and read it forwards.

Then Harold Wilson’s “white heat” age of technology ushered in the
mechanical era. Classrooms echoed to the deafening collective rattle of
15 or more braille machines — the Stainsby, the Perkins, the Lavender —
pounding away at dictation or composition.

And now, like print with its tablets, Kindles and touch screens, braille
has gone digital. And it is my belief that this could well mean it
becomes more widely available and infinitely more useful. This is
important because it means all children in future will be able to enjoy
the same degree of literacy, not to mention the same levels of
liberation and pleasure, as I do now.

Think of this: I am writing and editing this piece on an Apple computer
using braille from an electronic display that drives pins into the
correct shapes to form a line of braille text. Once the piece is
published I will be able to go to the Guardian website on my iPhone or
iPad, use Bluetooth to connect up a portable braille device, and read it
along with you. The main problem currently is the cost of the
braille-reading equipment: the cheapest is £900.

But, fellow reader, we are now in the age of the app and of haptic
technology, which communicates through vibration and touch. It is
already possible for me to download an app that will create on my touch
screen a virtual braille keyboard on which I can compose texts, emails,
tweets and Facebook updates in braille.

Meanwhile, the search is already on for the holy grail of braille — a
means of creating dots without using expensive mechanical cells that
make the shape of braille characters using pins. Then the world would
truly be at our fingertips.

What is needed is an app that would turn digital text on your device
into electronic impulses in the shape of braille characters, transmitted
by the screen of your iPad or other tablet, to be read by touch. To go
back to my restaurant quandary, all I would need to do would be to call
up the menu online, put it through my haptic braille app, and read it on
my screen.

Add into that mix a scanning app, and I could point my device at what
was on the supermarket shelf and have the haptic braille app produce the
package information.

And if you think this is hopelessly optimistic pie in the sky, it’s
worth remembering that less than five years ago 96 per cent of all books
produced would never be turned into forms accessible to blind people.
But with the advent of e-books and existing technology, I am now able to
read pretty much any book I want to in electronic braille.

So rather than seeing the end of braille, we could be entering a golden

[AI] Google Glass and the blind market an interview please read it!!!!

2014-05-22 Thread timy sebastian

*18 May 2014*

*Roberta:* Once thought the stuff of science fiction, smart glasses that
put the digital world right in front of your eyes are becoming a
reality. A new project from Telstra is seeing apps for Google Glass
changed the lives of people with disability. And here to tell us more is
Online Editor for Media Access Australia, Eliza Cussen. Welcome Eliza.

*Eliza:* Hi Roberta.

*Roberta: *We have talked about Google Glass on the program before, but
to refresh our memories could you tell us just what it is?

*Eliza:* Sure. Well basically Google Glass is a brand new type of
device. It's like a smart phone but shaped like a pair of glasses. I
think it's the best way to explain it. So it's a pair of smart glasses.
So these are designed for you to see through, connect to the internet,
and control with voice commands. In a similar way to people using Siri
on an iPhone.

*Roberta:*Now what kind of application does this have for blind and
vision impaired people?

*Eliza:* Well this is where it gets really exciting. As with most
devices the joy comes from the apps that people make for it. And as the
apps for vision impairment go, the sky is the limit with this device.
The potential is just astounding. And of course the voice activated
nature of Google Glass makes it perfectly suited for a blind or vision
impaired person, even though that wasn't the original intention of it.
So Google has started to release the product to developers so that they
can start to make apps and software for it, and we're starting to see
some really interesting projects. And as you said in the intro, one of
these has been sponsored by Telstra, here in Australia, and a company
called b2cloud has developed an app which basically turns Google Glass
into a voice activated OCR camera. So they've released a little
promotional video and in it we see Kelly Schultz, who's a Telstra worker
who's blind. She uses Google Glass to identify things like bank notes
and tell the difference between, in the video she's choosing between
standard frozen peas and minted peas in the supermarket.

*Roberta*: Gosh.

*Eliza:* And the Google Glass it reads the packaging, identifies the
difference, and announces it, This is a packet of minted peas. I know.

*Roberta:* This is great.

*Eliza:* I had goosebumps watching it, Roberta.

*Roberta: *I'll bet.

*Eliza:*Well Google Glass will also be able to help with navigation and
orientation. So as we've talked about lots of times on the show before,
Google Maps provides turn by turn navigation for pedestrians, which I'm
sure a lot of listeners are already making use of, getting around the
city. And Google Glass being able to recognise things like buildings
you're standing in front of it will be able to tell you exactly where
you are in the real world. So this is the game changer.

*Roberta:* What are the benefits of something like this over specialist
technology made just for the blind market?

*Eliza:* So for me the magic of this is that it is a mainstream
technology. It's something that's been marketed to everyone, but also
happens to have huge benefits for disabled people. And I think this is
really the future. Rather than creating specialist devices that are very
expensive, that only blind people can use, it's about making mainstream
technology applicable to blind people. And so that means that it isn't
just the tool for access, it's a tool for inclusion. And what we really
need to work hard to do is get app developers realising the value a
device like this and helping to realise its potential for the blind and
vision impaired markets.

*Roberta: *Now the big question: how much does it cost, and how do we
get our hands on it?

*Eliza:* I cringe when you ask me this Roberta. I'm afraid these little
beauties are harder to come by than hot cross buns in Spring. Yeah.
Google, there's a real aura of mystery around this. It's all very James
Bond. Google has only released a few hundred of them through the Glass
Explorer program, which is currently only open to Americans. I've
actually only ever seen one in the wild, so to speak, and that was in
San Francisco, so I'm pretty sure the man wearing it was in fact a
Google employee. Eventually these will be available in Australia. It is
a matter of time. And we're expecting a price tag somewhere in the
ballpark of $2,500. It is still a hefty investment for sure but I think
it's one that could be worth considering for a lot of people.
