Braille won’t work on notes.

Notes are subject to degradation passing through so many hands. When they
become even slightly softened, the dots would have significantly faded.

here, we are talking about those people who have minimum education, and, have a
minimum living. But, there in our country, India, we have mor visually
challenged people who are not educated, and, even cannot afford any type of
smartphone or these vollets. What for them?

don't you all think, that, we should make a online petition. For RBI, so, that,
they can print these notes in braile.

RE: [AI] How to know good brands and latest trends

2023-12-26 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa (Yoganathan Khandoo)
Amar,

I believe sighted people’s preferences change very quickly as they “view”
things on-line. We cannot really keep up with our wives in that regard. Fact is
we may even fail to realize how much we do not know by not seeing their world
change as they daily feast their eyes through the various digital shopping
world!

Personally I won’t try to chase up. If you can’t beat them, join them. “I want
to get something you really like or need, so tell me and we’ll do this together
for your birthday” is an example of how I would start that conversation.

She does all sorts of shopping from brands be it online or offline including
clothing. And I am on the other hand a kind of a person who has his outlets and
brands fixed and don't like taking too much of pain to shop!

Yep-have been trying simpler things-as I know I can mess things up when it

Amar,

Each brand has its own influencers though watching their videos will usually
not yield much useful information. How does your wife track her brands? Does
she, for instance watch a lot of short videos???

Your favorite search engine of choice would yield you the top brands in
whatever category of product you want. If it is clothing, look for seasonal
collections. I think that brand is Tommy hillfigure. See

2023-12-26 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa (Yoganathan Khandoo)
May be y’all will find this strange, Amar and all on this thread, but here goes
how I do it.

I usually don’t buy my wife gifts, and I don’t expect her to buy me gifts.
Instead we express our desires to each other about what we desire to have, and
we work together to get it.

This working together, planning towards each others needs I find even more
rewarding because it’s a collective effort that is sustained for us both. Not
only the day the gift comes is it a nice exchange. That exchange happens from
the moment one of us says “I wish I could have this thing”. The moment the
other partner says, ok, let’s save up for it, the chase begins to satisfy the
spouce.

Anyway just my ways, each for his own, but just in case someone wants to
consider this as an interesting addition to your nuptial fun with your sighted
or even blind spouce, …

RE: [AI] Using whatsup app on windows

2023-12-23 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa (Yoganathan Khandoo)
Hi,
If I remember correctly support for Whatsapp App only starts with Jaws 2022 or
2023.
If that's what you have you don't have to do anything else.
Open Whatsapp and you can immediately hit Jaws key plus H to hear the shortcuts
available. Or you could arrow down the latest chats, or type in the name of
someone then arrow down to the nearest hits. When you press enter you're
immediately at the edit field to type to that person. Alt H takes you to the
messages of that chat so you can arrow through them. Alt C returns you to your
original list of chats. Use Jaws key plus H to learn about more cool features
like making an audio call, recording voice messages Etc while you are in a
chat. And if you don't want to learn the shortcuts, tab and shift-tab also gets
you to those buttons or controls.
Hope this hehlps.

[AI] UDID related questions

2023-12-14 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa (Yoganathan Khandoo)
Hi friends,
A few questions if y'all don't mind:

1. I've been hearing about two things: UDID, and disability certificate. From
the context of discussions it appears they are not the same thing. In that case:
1.1. Why two separate documents are necessary to prove disability?
1.2. Which of the two is most important?
1.3. Can you get one without the other?

2. Now that I have Aadhaar card, what is my next most important step towards
legal recognition of disability and inclusion in India? What is the procedure
to follow that step?
3. From former discussions here it appears the whole country is not on the same
page as central Government, so that some states rebel from Central Government
regulation. For example there was talk of West Bengal not accepting UDID
procedure or some sort. I'm in Mathura Vrindavana. Is there any
location-specific context I should be aware of here?

Thanks friends.

Wow Vaibhav, you are observant really - you caught that one - good catch!
Fortunately I linked to the correct circular, but I should have linked to the
paragraph as a "this page link" specifically like so:

https://www.rbi.org.in/Scripts/BS_ViewMasCirculardetails.aspx?id=9862#9

Any way too late - I already sent it yesterday, but they are probably not as
efficient as you are to catch the mistake! But let's hope they are
scared enough that a blind person is not usually some couch potato who can take
anything one throws at us. I think the worse thing people do with persons with
disabilities is to relegate us to the status of living entity with lower
consciousness, much like animals, even if they do not realize they are doing
it. In fact I know people who do this even though they do it in a kind-hearted
way, much like a child will take good care of a bird in a cage.
And as usual I digress.

Yamuna,
the part where you've quoted from Section 2(1)(A), it is not in the 1st July

Dear Shashanki,

This is Yoganathan Khandoo, your NRI account holder blind customer formerly
from South Africa. I opened my account along with my wife Sherry Ann Khandoo. I
trust you are well.

As I have been living in Vrindavan for over a year, I now wish to close my NRI
account and convert to local account. I also now have acquired Aadhaar card to
facilitate this process.

Before doing this, I wish to clarify that for my local account I wish to use my
own fingerprint to sign all account opening documents. Previously when we
opened my NRI account it was suggested by you that my wife must sign all my
documents. I have since learnt that as per RBI guidelines, people who cannot
use pen signatures such as the blind, illiterate or dyslectic may use an
alternate form of signature including fingerprint signatures. I wish to avail
of this option only to assert my dignity of independence as a differently abled
individual. It places me as a male authority over my own family, affording me
the right to exercise my own choice and in terms of human rights afforded by
Indian legislation which I choose to avail of. For me it is a question of
dignity, wherein I stand in support of people with disabilities at large.

In support of my own case, please find the following National legislation and
RBI Banking circular references for your information:

1. Paragraph 9 and 10 of RBI Master circular on customer service in Banks
dated 1st July 2015:

section 2(1)(A):

iv) If a Blind / visually challenged person is illiterate, or literate but
unable to sign uniformly, his thumb impression should be obtained as a rule on
the account opening form, pay-in slips and the withdrawal order forms and all
the other precautions prescribed for the opening and conduct of accounts of
illiterate depositors will be followed.

v) However, if a Blind / visually challenged person is literate and he is in a
position to sign uniformly, he may put his signature on the account opening
form, pay-in slips and the withdrawal order forms.

2. Banking facilities for senior citizens and differently abled persons dated
9th November 2017:

3.7: Wherever thumb or toe impression of the old/sick pensioner is obtained, it
should be identified by two independent witnesses known to the bank, one of
whom should be a responsible bank official.

It's wonderful that you had good results with your friend. Each small win is a
big win for the whole blind community. We must celebrate each others' success
by feeling glad in our hearts for each other's success against discrimination.
The legal people among us will have better luck if we keep one heart as a blind
community, because collective consciousness helps collective goals, even on a
subtle level.

God be with us all.

you are right sir, but what to do, without any document, if you will approach
to the higher authority, they will try to deny, that there is no such
application received. I had encountered the same while helping out one of my
completely blind friend. later I told hhim to give a loan application with the
quotation and fill all the details to purchase car and let the bank deny. but,
finally they have sanctioned and disbursed the loan.

2023-12-08 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa (Yoganathan Khandoo)
Yes that's excellent advice I did not realize is possible here - apply
electronically and have them reject it that way on record. Brilliant. Still,
thereafter you need to have somewhere to take that evidence to who can hold
them accountable anyway, and without you giving an arm and a leg to accomplish.

I've learnt the hard way that while I might get excited about collecting
evidence, often the channels we have don't really care about justice. That
happened when I lost my job at First National Bank in South Africa. They first
appeared to innocently rename my role as back-office assistant by first
narrowing it down to switchboard operator, then revoking that as a bank
function which gives way to IVR systems.
I recorded my exit interview which proved they were only box-ticking past
accessibility requirements. Still, I could not fight because they had money and
power and I had none.

Apply for banking facility you want on their prescribed format, and let them
deny. you can ask them to reject your application on writing.

Unusual reading access preferences (was RE: [AI] Scanners or cameras for large books OCR?)

2023-12-08 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa (Yoganathan Khandoo)
Hi Pranav,

Thanks for a lot of useful info here.
You asked which books I wish to read: Much of the books I look to read are not
easily accessible for download, because they derive from platforms that
challenge the status quo.
If I start here it wouldn't end, and Harish as our list moderator would be
pressured to bark me off the list!
But just to give you an idea of the unusual kind of content I read not readily
accessible:

Alternative treatment to diabetes or other health challenges which big pharma
derides because it challenges their profit-model. Heard of Master Mineral
Solution by Jim Humble? It's banned in the US but very amazing for over-all
health. I use it and it keeps me very healthy otherwise. Can't find it in India.

The question of vaccines in general as a killer of the human race. Covid
vaccines only tip the scale of a long history.

The attempt of the current globalist world-order to hide other civilizations
from us by portraying our world as an isolated globe spinning in outer-space,
when in fact it belongs to a multi-dimentional planetary-system 4 billion miles
in diameter (this is the Vedic version rarely corroborated by explorers like
the Norwegian Olaf Jensen from the 1800s who travelled far along the north pole
to another civilization.

The denial of early aptitude-based educational system of the West which
introduced undirected detailed topics into education which took influence even
here in India which deliberately aims to dumb down our children into dosile
consumers, and the global powers behind such a "Jack of all trades, master of
none" as it happens in our high-schools.

The powers master-mining the globalist world-order expertly coordinated by the
highest proponent, called Kali in the Vedic world-view, Iblis in Islam or the
devil in Christianity - who are these agents of that authority of this age? The
Rothschild's are no accident in their influence!

Call me crazy if you will, but even the least thoughtful people in society
these days will admit that something is seriously wrong with our civilization.
The fact that this is true the world-over, from law enforcement to food to
education and everything inbetween tells us there's more going on with money
only as a temptation that meets the eye. Better have blind eyes if you won't
see it! Pardon the pun for this list. And that keeps me right on-topic for this
list!

Still I'll admit that AI has reached fascinating levels of advancement, even
for me to contemplate while having a technical proclivity and interest. The
level at which it can appear to "understand difficult questions, research
appropriately on it, "think" and respond thoughtfully is mind-blowing. GPT4 is
now somewhat accessible via Bing BTW. Google's Bard has far more access to
Google-based up-to-date content though.

Yes. My E-mail has poked into every fascet of life. That's my fickle mind that
makes me so unpopular. Perhaps most people silently dislikes me for this - it
does sadden the heart I'll admit. My eagerness to share things I know about may
appear to be pride, arrogance Etc, but I honestly say it is none of that. I'm
just passionate about things and have eagerness enough to keep me chattering
about everything, unable to control my speech. This is a fault. The
Bhakti-upadesamrta-sindhu by Rupa Goswami proposes that among other sensual
controls, the limiting of one's speech to the essentials is a saintly quality
that displays purity enough to influence the world towards spiritual pursuit.
I've got a long way to go. But since I'm trying to practice spiritual life, I
can only hope I touch others with some value with the things I have to say.

Anyway now you know why I would like to find dedicated ways to read printed
texts.

Kind regards,
Yamuna Jivana dasa

Hi Yamuna,

Camera scanners are quite good. Ditch the Kurzweil 1000. There are add-ons for
nvda that allow you to interface with scanners. Jaws does so natively I
believe.

You can still buy fineReader which is the best OCR in terms of accuracy.

Having said all the above, have a chat with the SaralX sales team, NAB Delhi,
the people at XRCVC, who may have better ideas.

I too have been looking for scanners that support at least a3 paper or cameras
with a wide angle view.

There are plenty of those around as well, some have been developed in India.
For a4 text, phone cameras are enough. The tricky part though is mounting them
and getting the lighting right. You can go for a dedicated phone scanner stand.

What kinds of books do you want to read? I ask because at least for fiction,
the majority of books are available on amazon kindle or are being sold by
individual authors from their own

My Thoughts on Screen-reader accessibility (was RE: [AI] Which is the best bank with regard to accessibility)

2023-12-08 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa (Yoganathan Khandoo)
Hi Folks,

It may be obvious to some but still worth noting from time to time:

Just because a website is accessible does not imply the company is
accessibility friendly. It only means the developers happened to use standard
controls and native off-screen models in apps which screen-readers know how to
navigate.

When they make modifications to the controls from their developer toolkit, then
they leave the screen-reader unaware of such modifications. An example of this
is ICICI Bank’s App. They have implemented multiple tabs, only the last of
which is the main one we use for actual banking purposes called “Transact”.
Talkback does not know it is an independently activatable item. Prudence
somehow can see that it is.

There are two important keyplayers that need to participate in accessibility,
the first of which is more important in my view:

1. Screen-reader developers. They need to keep adding newer standard
control types into the screen-reader’s awareness portfolio. They also need to
include newer off-screen models that gain in popularity. They have the most
important part to play, failing which lobbiests for accessibility will have a
harder time at pulling companies into conformity. If the screen-reader
developer keeps up with the more popular components of the developer toolkit
controls then, as we have already observed, interfaces of companies become
accessible without even knowing or caring about accessibility. This is true for
any screen-reader on any operating system, both computer or mobile devices.

2.The software developer. These guys are the hardest to reach by
accessibility lobbyists. They function behind a money-focused corporate
bureaucracy. Yet, if they break accessibility design simply by modifying
interfaces for visual appeal without breaking accessibility, then the damage is
done, and fixing the problem becomes a messy reach up the corporate ladder,
often involving legal pressure to force decision-makers at the top to simply
give the order. Often they simply don’t care because they don’t feel they have
to. Arrogance can only be crushed under pressure and does not lend itself to
mere good naturedness.

Even while knowing these things, for me to get involved is a disaster because I
am the worse diplomat you can find. Even for my own needs I have perhaps
frustrated those in the position to help me by leaning too strongly on their
support. I apologise for that, but in absence of good judgement for when or how
to navigate difficult situations I tend to pressure too much those who might
otherwise care. I offer a public apology to people like Amar Jain on this list
whom I probably drove off the wall while struggling to get Aadhaar during an
urgent need time of my life. Unfortunately my Aadhaar is now here, but, too
good, too late. Such is life.

Anyway I digress as usual.

Kind regards,

Hi,

The majority of HDFC Bank’s services are accessible.

I have not seen any explicit commitment to accessibility but as of this
writing, I have not had a problem. Their newsletters though are primarily
graphics based.

You know these front-office staff will never comply and give a written letter
stating such. They are not under obligation to provide such a letter and so
they won't in the name of having the next client to see. It's not a useful
dynamic. Better to get the name of the person and officials here might be able
to take it on. Good luck.

[AI] Scanners or cameras for large books OCR?

2023-12-08 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa (Yoganathan Khandoo)
Hi friends,
I'm currently researching hardware options for reading large books as quickly
as possible by processing text to OCR.
Is there a recommended option that can function under both Macs and Windows,
and perhaps even from Android or IPhone?
Preferred is of course Macs and Windows platforms that the hardware can support.
I've come across Kurzweil 1000 and the Perl camera by Freedom Scientific.
I've got no idea how these would work. I wonder which is better?

When I was growing up and going to university in the 1990s, back then we had
flat-bed scanners. You would place the page on the glass, making sure they are
very straight, hold it down firmly at the book binding, and press the scan
button on the computer software. The scanner would then take around 30 seconds
to scan a page, and then the software will ask you to turn to the next page.
The scanner used to be called Arkenstone and the software was Openbook. This
means you take many days to scan a 300 page book, and by the end of it you are
exhausted. At the end it would recognize the pages for some time, and the OCR
results were reasonably good, provided the text was quality printing and no
hand-writing.

Obviously things must have improved by now? Of course accuracy of the OCR is
also very important. I'm even thinking what if you could scan a computer
screen, a bank card, and other non-book-page items?

Have the phone cameras become effective for us to use via software that can
detect if the whole page is in focus, to guide the blind person to move the
book so that all the text is displayed and not cut off Etc, before scanning?
That sounds like it will take too much shuffling around. May be the dedicated
hardware for the blind works better for us?

Sorry I'm thinking all over the page - I mean place, now!
And I'm also going down memory lane, excuse me. We used to have a device called
an Opticon, which is a camera that you place on a page, and connected to
another device which represents the shape of the letter under your index finger
of the other hand, using tiny pins that slightly lift and vibrate to shape the
letters that you can feel. So, with one hand you slowly move the camera around
the page, and with the other hand index finger inserted into the Opticon
device, you feel the shape of the representation change under your finger as
you move the camera. It was quite a nice device for its time. Ah well. I'm
getting old! What to do!

Any thoughts?

Kind regards,

Yamuna Jivana dasa

Hi friends,
Is it true that some banks have talking ATMs in India?
Are those really accessible? If so please can someone share more information on
which banks offer this and how accessible the functions really are?
Mainly I need to do cash deposits. Is this possible without sighted help?

Thanks.

RE: [AI] how to handle mouse oriented events in NVDA & JAWS

2023-12-08 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa (Yoganathan Khandoo)
Hi,

There are a few ways you can use the mouse, depending on what you need to do.
For example in Jaws you can use Jaws cursor (Numpad Minus in Desktop layout),
then arrow keys to read the mouse position. These days lots of Apps do not use
a standard form of screen-draw so it doesn't work, but in that case you can OCR
the screen (Insert Space Bar, then O, then W), then arrow around to read the
result of text recognized.

If you want to hear what is under the mouse as you move the physical mouse
around, press Insert Space, then E, then O to turn on this function. Now just
move the mouse and hear it speak. Sometimes works but sometimes depending on
screen-draw you can also have problems, in that case use it in combination with
OCR described above.

But I think what you are really asking about here is in a web browser with
Virtual PC cursor (Jaws) or Browse mode (NVDA), sometimes you get different
things popping up when the mouse is pointing to something on the display. For
that you get the virtual cursor or browse mode onto the item you are interested
in, then route the mouse pointer to it using Insert Numpad Minus (both
screen-readers), then return to browse mode or virtual cursor. Now if you arrow
around again you should hear the context of the item under the mouse.

Next year I'm seriously thinking of continuing teaching accessibility again.
Anyone interested please write me outside of this list.
Click here to mail me directly on my E-mail address: ykhan...@gmail.com
I already have lots of students from South Africa so not sure how many I can
accommodate further, but I'll be prioritizing on the order in which requests
are received. Cost will be 500 Rands which is 2,000 Rupees per month. That's if
I do proceed with this. My family are fighting for me to retire but I'll out of
my passion if I do.

Subject: [AI] how to handle mouse oriented events in NVDA & JAWS

Dear Friends,

I hope you all are fine.
In most of the websites, they are giving importance to mouse oriented events &
tasks.
Because, it is easy to sited persons to use the mouse better than the keyboard.
They will simply move the mouse then click or double click or drag & drop
efficiently & easily. using mouse for scrolling also seems to be easier for
them. Even slider movements also can be done easily with mouse.

But, In our case all of these things seems to be tricky. We have to struggle
for handling these operations. Is it possible to handle these operations in a
easier manner using our screen readers.
I want to know how to handle mouse oriented tasks or events using screen
readers.
Can some one guide me in these matter.

2023-12-05 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa (Yoganathan Khandoo)
I'm not sure about Windows 11, but in Windows 10 use Insert Shift B to read
battery and network status from Jaws or NVDA.
To adjust system volume press Start button with Windows key, type Sound Mixer
and press enter. This should open the panel to make those adjustments.
Hope this helps.

[AI] RE: NVDA versus Jaws [was AI] Regarding how to use WhatsApp in laptop)

2023-12-03 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa (Yoganathan Khandoo)
Hi, Wow! that is fantastic! Jaws for Whatsapp also has some shortcuts scripted
for it, but not nearly half as many and useful as NVDA!

I suspect scripting for NVDA’s Add-ons are probably somewhat harder to do than
Jaws scripting, and there is not yet an equivalent of HotSpotClicker for NVDA,
but I won’t be surprised that some users could end up building such a front-end
clicker, possibly even Jim Snowbarger himself!

Jaws users should start getting used to NVDA because I think Jaws with its
business model cannot last under this level of competitiveness. NVDA is going
to make Jaws redundant in only a few years from now. Just my prediction but I
think it’s a fair one. Any thoughts?

We hope NVDA continues to remain freeware and I have vowed to donate even
though in my tiny Rupees currency.

[AI] Accessibility to activating Airtel's Value-added services like Disney HotStar and Amazon Prime Video

2023-12-02 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa (Yoganathan Khandoo)
Hi Friends,

Anyone knows of an alternate way of activating Airtel’s Value-added services
like Amazon Prime and Disney Hotstar, where the Airtel Fibre plan supports it?
To my knowledge the only way to do this is Airtel Thanks App, which as we know
is inaccessible.

I tried logging into the Website at https://www.airtel.in/manage-account/ but
there it only shows the main plan details for the services like Fibre and Sim
plans. I cannot find for value-added services.

Or am I missing something?

Thanks.

Subject: Invitation for awareness session on g mail standard view with NVDA

Dear Friends,

I hope this message finds you well. As most of us are using Gmail for our email
communication, we have found the basic HTML view in Gmail to be incredibly
accessible to screen readers. This feature has greatly facilitated our email
management, making the communication process smoother and more efficient.

However, we want to inform you about an upcoming change: Google plans to phase
out the basic HTML view within the next couple of months. In light of this
development, we are preparing ourselves to transition to the standard view in
Gmail. The good news is that the standard view is also very accessible, and we
can continue managing our emails with ease.

To assist everyone in adapting to this change, we are organizing an Awareness
Session on Gmail Standard View with NVDA. This session will take place on
Sunday, November 26, 2023, at 7:00 PM. During this one-hour session, we will
focus on using the standard view in Gmail specifically with NVDA, the popular
screen reader software.

Session Details:

Date: Sunday, November 26, 2023
Time: 7:00 PM
Duration: 1 Hour
Session Agenda:

Introduction to Gmail Standard View
Navigation and Features with NVDA
Tips and Tricks for Efficient Email Management Q Session This session aims to
provide valuable insights and practical knowledge for NVDA users on Gmail. We
are offering this session free of charge to ensure that everyone can benefit
from it. To participate, all you need to do is enroll using the following link:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfGvuAwQ4vEd9cMB-jdiSa2rq_m8BtPLOJ9VSQ8OQSAMmHBaQ/viewform?usp=sf_link

We will send you the session's joining link via email on Sunday around
5:00 PM, enabling you to join the session promptly at 7:00 PM.

Your active participation in this session is highly encouraged. It will not
only enhance your Gmail experience but also empower you to navigate the digital

RE: [AI] Inquiry with regards to bank accounts

2023-11-18 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa (Yoganathan Khandoo)
Hi, I cannot do that because I need AADHAAR card to convert to local account.
I am having so much problem getting AADHAAR card fixed. They wrote my Surname
wrongly and although I have made Update Request number over and over again,
they keep marking it as case resolved but fixing nothing. I have 10 or 11 URNs
already repeating the same mess. As a blind person to get to Aadhaar Kendra
centre every time is difficult logistically.
My friends of authority even from this list have become fed up with my case so
that nobody feels inclined to help further. I don't blame them. Now even I am
giving up: trusting in God's plan is superior to over-endeavour.
So I will have to stay with NRE/NRO account because local account means you
need Aadhaar. Of course that is not desirable because tax is 30% of earned
interest, what to speak of the requirement to give up NRE account for local
after reasonable period of time, just not possible without Aadhaar. And no I am
not returning to South Africa again except if my mother or sister passes away,
and then I return to Vrindavana immediately after performing their final
rights. This is my personal sankalpa. So I do not plan to leave India except
for short periods in case of these emergencies.

Kind regards,

Yamuna Jivana dasa

2023-11-18 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa (Yoganathan Khandoo)
Hi Sagar,

I am also OCI holder and have opened NRE/NRO account for NRIs at ICICI Bank.

The Web interface is accessible with screen-reader such as Jaws and NVDA.

Without sighted help, I have used it to add payment recipients, make payments,
view account balances, downloading detailed transaction history by specifying
dates and other download criteria, and buying airtime for my phone as well as
for validating Netbanking payments from external providers.

I also like the fact that you can download transaction history in XLSX format
and not only in PDF format.

If you wish to open with ICICI Bank, I can show you around with Jaws Etc.

Thanks.

Hi,

You say: “Not possible to describe in a write-up.” Why not? Everything said so
far is meaningless in terms of functionality, as has already been pointed out
here by others.

To my mind, this comes across as simply a lack of transparency, giving me an
instinctive feeling not to trust in the first place. I hope I’m wrong.

That’s just my honest feeling. Consider this if you will in your marketing
strategy, if you really have a valuable product to offer the blind community.

Hi,

If you cannot afford a human translator then these App translators can do quite
a reasonable job as I have seen.
Personally I don’t agree that they are “meaningless and horrific”. If you write
the original text using colloquial slang language or is full of local dialect
and phrases, naturally the formal language translations will struggle. That’s
the exception.

I’ve had many occasions to communicate with a French guy where he would write
to me by translating from his French to English, and I from English to French,
and we managed to have important discussions that way. You of course cannot use
idiomatic expressions and such things, expecting them to translate to the
intended meanings. Naturally you must respect the fact that you are using
machine translation and follow sensible sentence construction in the source
language while composing your text. Doing this can yield excellent results.

Just my 2 cents.

absolutely meaningless and horrific assignment

What is the meaning of converting a document from English to Hindi?

Is Hindi a file extension to convert?

It is the job of a translator.

translating 200 pages of a document would take a considerable amount of time
and machine translation is usually faulty.

even if you take the help of machine translation like Bard or google translate,
you need to spend considerable amount of time to proof-read it.

then get its print copy.
I don't know the hindi typing at all, however my task would be

rest work may be taken care by other colleagues. Therefore kindly
advise me how to do this task.
I have the following tools:
Windows PC and laptop with jaws 2022 and hindi tts.
Android mobile phone with Envision AI, EYE D pro and few other apps
those can OCR hindi (but not translate)
I don't have any hindi OCR software in my windows based PC or laptop

Though here the issue is not doing hindi OCR, but doing translation
from english to hindi primarily. Kindly help

RE: [AI] Surgeons Perform World's First Eye Transplant

2023-11-10 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa (Yoganathan Khandoo)
Hi all,
It's interesting this was posted here today by Shahnaz, because just two
nights earlier I was chatting with Google Bard's AI project, and learning
about current trends in optic nerve regeneration in people born blind who
have never seen previously in their lives.
There are now non-invasive magnetic stimulation procedures to force the
brain to recognize light activity even if the person had never seen before.
Coupled with stem-cell treatment and regrowing or repairing the optic
nerves, amazing results may be possible. Can you imagine seeing for the
first time - a feeling, a sensation you have never known before? It's like
magic to a person born blind. Perhaps those who lost their sight later will
never understand the excitement of dealing with the unknown in such a
positive possibility.

Just in case someone might be interested, here's my chat history with Bard.
I hope list moderators will consider this on-topic, relevant and
appropriate. If not please advise me further. List members are welcome to
write me directly further as well or even discuss on voice call:

My discussion with Bard

Yamuna Jivana Dasa wrote:
Can the optic nerve be extracted from a person to re-use in a defective
case?

Bard replied:
The optic nerve is a bundle of nerve fibers that connects the eye to the
brain. It is responsible for transmitting visual information from the eye to
the brain. The optic nerve is a very delicate structure, and it is not
currently possible to transplant the optic nerve in humans.

There are a number of challenges that need to be overcome before optic nerve
transplantation can become a reality. One challenge is that the optic nerve
is a very complex structure, and it is difficult to accurately reconnect the
nerve fibers after they have been transplanted. Another challenge is that
the optic nerve is susceptible to damage from inflammation and scarring.

Researchers are working on developing new technologies that could overcome
these challenges and make optic nerve transplantation possible in the
future. For example, some researchers are developing new surgical techniques
that could help to minimize damage to the optic nerve during
transplantation. Other researchers are developing new biomaterials that
could help to protect the optic nerve from inflammation and scarring.

In addition to optic nerve transplantation, researchers are also exploring
other ways to restore vision to people with optic nerve damage. For example,
some researchers are developing new stem cell therapies that could help to
regenerate damaged optic nerve cells. Other researchers are developing new
brain implants that could bypass the damaged optic nerve and directly
stimulate the visual center of the brain.

It is still too early to say when optic nerve transplantation or other
treatments will be available to restore vision to people with optic nerve
damage. However, research in this area is progressing rapidly, and there is
hope that new treatments will be available in the near future.

from birth, now 47 years old, and wish to experience any form of sight
possible for the first time ever. I have bioptic atrophy and my blindness is
absolute.

Bard replied:
Research on stimulating the visual cortex of the brain in blind people who
have never seen since birth is a rapidly developing field. There are a
number of different approaches being explored, and some early results have
been promising.

One approach is to use electrical stimulation to directly stimulate the
visual cortex. This can be done by implanting electrodes into the brain or
by using non-invasive methods such as transcranial magnetic stimulation
(TMS).

Another approach is to use optogenetics to stimulate the visual cortex.
Optogenetics is a technique that uses light to control the activity of
neurons. In this approach, researchers use light to activate neurons in the
visual cortex that are responsive to visual stimuli.

Both of these approaches have been shown to produce some level of vision in
blind people. However, the results have been mixed, and there are still many
challenges to overcome before these approaches can be used to restore
functional vision to blind people.

One challenge is that the visual cortex is a very complex structure, and it
is difficult to accurately target the specific neurons that need to be
stimulated. Another challenge is that the brain needs to learn to interpret
the electrical or optical signals that are being used to stimulate the
visual cortex. This learning process can take time and may not be complete
in all cases.

Despite the challenges, research in this area is ongoing, and there is hope
that new treatments will be available to restore vision to blind people in
the near future.

Here are some specific examples of research on stimulating the visual cortex

RE: [AI] Request to participate in a survey for assessing the accessibility of E-database resources (gentle Reminder)

2023-11-08 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa (Yoganathan Khandoo)
Dear Masoom Reza

I have just submitted a response but using the Google forms interface.

I did this deliberately because others have struggled with accessibility so I
wanted to help evaluate why in the first place.

My thoughts if you don’t mind.

The edit fields all appear as read-only edit fields when the screen-reader
particular Jaws is in virtual cursor mode (browse mode in NVDA). However they
are not read-only fields but are wrongly reported by the screen-reader, and
when turning on Forms mode with Insert Z in Jaws, or Focused mode in NVDA with
Insert Spacebar, you can then enter data into these text fields. Tab will
navigate to the next control in this mode, but radio buttons cannot be changed
with arrow keys. The user has to again turn on virtual cursor with Insert Z in
Jaws or Browse mode with Insert Spacebar in NVDA, find the respective radio
button using text navigation with up-down arrows, and press spacebar to select
it.

Using these work-around methods, we can still navigate the form interface.

This should be reported to the accessibility guys at Google. By the way I would
like to get involved. Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Kind regards,

[AI] RE: Hope may be here for accessibility of iMobile App of ICICI Bank! Please read!

2023-10-22 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa (Yoganathan Khandoo)
Hi friends,

If you have ever tried to tinker around with the iMobile App from ICICI Bank,
and you found yourself disappointed, fear not, because working together I
believe I might be onto something useful. Please read on as I have interesting
news to share.

Taking sighted help from my son, I managed to navigate the iMobile Pay app of
ICICI Bank with some very limited degree of success.

However I discovered from this that Talkback itself may be configured to make
the ICICI Bank App more accessible to us.

But first I need to describe the interface so you will understand more clearly.

After logging into the iMobile App, there are main tabs:

“Transact”, “Travel and Shop”, and “Discover”.

Under Transact:

“Send money”, “Bill payment”, “Recharge”, “Account and FD/RD”, “Cards”,
“Loans”, “Invest and insure”, “UPI Payments” and “Services”.

The above-mentioned sub-menus of the first "Transact" main tab are
context-dependent, so that they appear only when you touch the main "Transact"
tab. When you tap on Transact, Talkback activates the menu, but does not then
see the sub-menus below it, except the Services sub-menu item.

However, if we roter to navigate via links (swipe up and down in with Talkback
until we reach the navigate by Links), then we can swipe up to navigate by
links to reach the rest of the sub-menu items.

However, when we find an item we are looking for, let's say "Send money", then
if we double-tap on it, Talkback does not activate the item. I also tried using
the Talkback menu with 3 fingers single tap, going to Links, here it sees only
the active link, in our example "Send money" because that was where we last
landed on, but if we execute it from here also it does not activate.

So, If we can get Talkback to activate such context-dependent menu items, I
believe this will be the beginning of accessibility of the eMobile App of the
ICICI Bank, even if it will require navigating and activating the sub-menus of
the Transact tab only by links navigation.

We know that Talkback navigates through these as if they are links. If it can
then execute the item the way it activates links, we may be onto some
accessibility here.

Anyone familiar with the Talkback development team here?

Looking forward to some exciting possibilities. To conclude, if a developer
refuses to adjust the build of their App for accessibility needs, then if at
all possible if we can make slight modifications to the screen-reader to see or
activate such items, it can actually make a difference to other Apps also using
similar controls used in the development toolkit, if Talkback learns how to
see, navigate and execute those newer controls.

Looking forward to further replies. If you wish for a more technical discussion
you may instead write me off-list.

Kind regards,

Yamuna Jivana dasa

Hi,

I just went through the PDF file. Very useful stuff here. Thanks for sharing.

One small correction seems to be in order.

After pressing enter on a message to read it, and you turn on virtual cursor
with Insert Z, then you have finished reading the message and turn virtual
cursor off, you cannot arrow down to the next message. You first have to press
the Back command of the browser which is Alt Left arrow. This is because you
will still be in the opened message and need to return to the message list.

Hope this helps further.

RE: [AI] Microsoft: looking for user connects

2023-10-20 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa (Yoganathan Khandoo)
Hello to all on this thread.

For Narrator to become a screen-reader of preference, the most important
consideration is that it must be customizable for Apps that have not been
specifically designed with standard Windows controls, tab-orders, and labelled
graphics to name a few. The screen-reader must have features to allow the user
to search for specific parent and child windows within applications, build hot
spots, apply shortcut keys to reach that spot and or interact with that spot in
specific ways as the mouse user would, to label graphical buttons, Etc, so that
interactive interfaces can be customized for unfriendly Apps. Failing these
things Narrator will remain an emergency-case screen-reader for simple tasks
like installing and configuring Windows, or for launching a more customizable
screen-reader.

I have been a technology accessibility trainer in South Africa for many years
until last year November when I relocated to India. You are welcome to contact
me for further discussion if desired.

Hello mam,

I am a hardkore NVDA user.

The thing with Narrater is that, it doesn't have the robustness or reliability
like an NVDA or even JAWS.

You cannot be confident that it will work everywhere and so is preferred only
as a backup screen-reader.

Also, the shortcuts are not easy to get used to.

It would be great if Narrator had a practical tutorial like Voice Over instead
of this long webpage with shortcuts listed on it.

Basically, I mean, Narrator has to become a very robust software which works
everywhere and is very appealing to use which could lead to change in
preference.

So if I am an OCI holder, am I not classified as an Indian citizen (albeit an

further qualify me for UDID?

Thanks though, I'll keep looking, and hopefully eventually build my simple

If I am not wrong, talkback uses UEBC (Unified English Braille Code) in its
Braille Keyboard.
List of all UEBC commands and their print equivalent letters are available
online.
Just search for UEBC Braille code you will get it.
If you are using Orbit Reader, it is also available there.

[AI] Complete list of Talkback braille keyboard commands for QWERTY keyboard

2023-10-18 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa (Yoganathan Khandoo)
Hi friends,

I’m thinking about compiling a Complete list of Talkback braille keyboard
commands for the QWERTY keyboard.

There are many use cases for this. For example someone may want to include the
` character in a password, which is next to the number 1 key on the QWERTY
keyboard, easy does it, but when using the Talkback braille keyboard on the
phone, they will need to know how to duplicate that character for the password
in braille.

Since most blind people from birth use Grade 2 (contracted) braille, I’ll start
with this first.

If it’s already been done please let me know. Otherwise if you’re interested in
collaborating with this effort please contact me. I’m still trying to find the
braille commands for many of these for myself and can do with some help.

For now I’m looking for the Slash and Backslash commands which I need to use
most often, particularly for typing URLs in braille, or for representing
Windows-based folder paths in braille, respectively.

Thanks guys.

Re: [AI] Using ICICI Bank's iMobile App with Talkback, and UPI Setup

2023-09-26 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa (Yoganathan Khandoo)
Thanks very much Harshit. Your explanations are methodical and well
articulated . Gives me confidence to take the plunge into Google Pay, that I
don't need to access the bank's iMobile Pay App to set up the UPI ID and
PIN.

So just to make sure that I'm understanding this correctly enough:
So long as the same SIM phone number inserted into the device is on record
with the bank, Google Pay can create the UPI ID and UPI PIN from the ICICI
Bank account, and fetch those for me to see, save, and to supply the UPI Id
to others who will be paying me. Correct?

Do I need to be logged into the same Google account using the same SIM phone
number for Google Account verification from which I will be activating
Google Pay, which shares the same SIM phone number in the device matching
the bank records?

Thanks a million once again.

Hi,
UPI is strictly a mobile-device payment method. The pre-requisite is
that the SIM of registered mobile number with the Bank should be in
the same device on which the UPI app is installed. You can use any UPI
app such as bank's own app or third-party UPI app like PhonePe or GPay
or Amazon Pay. When you register for UPI on any app, you will first to
have bind the app with your device which will be done using SIM
present in the mobile device. Then you will have to select the Bank.
You need not type the account number. By matching the mobile number
and Bank, your account will be automatically fetched. Then you can
create UPI id which is usually in the format mobileNo@UPIHandleOfApp.
Then you can create UPI Pin using debit card credentials of the
account being linked to the UPI app.

Do you find it inconvenient to adjust the volume of JAWS while attending a
virtual meeting or watching a YouTube video? In the past, you had to navigate
to the system tray and locate the volume icon to modify the JAWS volume
control. However, JAWS has introduced a new feature that allows to adjust the
volume on-the-fly.

How to Adjust JAWS Volume On The Fly

1. Press INSERT+SPACE followed by the letter V for volume.

2. Now use the letter J for adjusting the JAWS volume.

3. Next press UP ARROW to increase the volume and DOWN ARROW to decrease the
volume.

4. You can also adjust the system volume by using the letter S instead of J.

5. Use PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN to adjust in larger increments.

Re: [AI] accessibility of MAC systems

2023-09-10 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa (Yoganathan Khandoo)
Hi Saurav,
This tutorial is more for demonstrating to sighted people how blind people use
Apple devices.
It does teach that the Command Options D combination takes you to the Doc, how
the Voiceover modifier is Control Options combination keys, and to turn on
Voiceover is Command F5. Other than that it is more for demonstrating to
sighted people, not designed to teach us how to use Voiceover as a specialized
goal of the video. Better to use Applevis website for that.

Re: [AI] accessibility of MAC systems

2023-09-09 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa (Yoganathan Khandoo)

Hi Saravanan,

Here is the Contents page on Apple's Website for using Voiceover on the Mac:

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/voiceover/vo2682/mac

Voiceover is the built-in screen-reader for Mac, just like Windows has
Narrator as its built-in screen-reader. But Apple did this long before
Windows so that Voiceover is a far more powerful screen-reader natively
built into Mac computers. Unlike Windows as you know we have Jaws and NVDA
as better alternatives. On the Mac, Voiceover is the screen-reader everyone
uses.

Hope this link helps get you started on the Mac with Voiceover.

Hi Saravanan,
MACs are fully accessible and reliable too. The screen reader used in Macs
are Voiceover. You can shift very easily from Windows to Macs. To help you
in this regard, there are a number of videos and tutorials available in
Youtube.

Re: [AI] MA Update | Progress on the CCPD Notices to Inaccessible Service Providers

2023-08-23 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa (Yoganathan Khandoo)
Hi,
Can you confirm that Airtel, one of the biggest phone and network providers are
among these entities sent final notices before action will be taken against
them? Will be great to hear if that is so.

Kind regards,

Subject: [AI] MA Update | Progress on the CCPD Notices to Inaccessible Service
Providers

Dear All,

We want to provide you with an update on the progress made over the CCPD
notices sent to over 70 inaccessible platforms based on the list submitted by
MA. Over the past two months, we have received responses from approximately 18
service providers. These responses include government entities like the
Ministry of Law and Justice, RBI, SEBI, and the National Health Authority
(NHA), as well as private entities such as Reliance Industries, Sodexo,
Network18, Zee Entertainment, and Flo Health UK, among others.

Among these 18 responses, entities like RBI, NHA, and the Indian Navy have
asserted the presence of assistive features on their platforms. However, upon
our inspection, we identified some lingering issues on their websites,
prompting us to request the CCPD to issue orders for rectifying these
persistent problems on their digital interfaces. Further, companies like
Reliance Retail, Sedexo, and Sinhal Udyog have submitted their Equal
Opportunity Policies and have committed to taking steps to ensure that their
websites and applications become accessible.

We are currently in the process of filing rejoinders to each of the responses
received from these service providers. Additionally, we are sending out
reminders to the remaining service providers, urging them to submit their
replies. If they fail to do so, we will be initiating legal actions against
such platforms.

Thank you.
