[AFMUG] from Paul - List hosting

2018-06-06 Thread Paul McCall
Hi Everyone,

I wanted to jump in and let everyone know that we apologize that we are no
longer able to stay on top of the Amazon instance associated with the list.
Amazon has been great as a platform, it really has worked well, all up to the
point where the hackers have caused us more grief than we are equipped to deal
with any more.

For the record, AWS has been 100% (and I mean 100%) flawless in performance and
consistency. The problems a couple months ago and now, are of a nature of
hacks from the outside world, of which we were able to mitigate them last time,
and to some extent, again this time. My main staff member who managed this, is
no longer accessible to me, so problem solving on these hacks has been slower
and less effective than I am comfortable with. Therefore, it seems beyond the
scope, long term, of what makes good sense for the list, for us, or for Chuck
to have to deal with.

Pride is a funny thing, but we actually took pride in being able to provide the
service, even absorbing the cost beyond what some have said is reasonable.
Likewise, we are also proud to see AFMUG continue at its new home, under a new
"group care" and our helping as much as we can with that effort.

Thank you for being patient as we move this all over to a new home.

Paul

2018-05-14 Thread Paul McCall
Looking for a 4g LTE solution that won’t kill me if several customers on a
tower (that have the devices) start using it over a weekend while the tower is
down.

These 2 look to be suitable for tower mgmt., but not necessarily a customer

I know this has been covered before... Got hit with a pretty substantial USF
surcharge on a wave by Centurylink even after getting all taxes and fees
estimated ahead of time by Level3. USF wasn't in there but now they are saying
pound sand.

This is a wave between data centers. Just used for internet. We don't sell
VOIP.

Is there a way out of this? Is USF appropriate on a wave with no phone service
is involved? Its kind of crazy at 21%

Depends on the load and how you wire it.

For smaller sites I've been known to use a small 24VDC fan for ventilation
which consumes less than 1A, so I switch it directly with the relay.

If you get closer to the relay rating you should use an off board relay, and
then you use the on board relay to control the power for the coil of the off
board relay. The on board relay just carries enough current to power the coil
which isn't that much except for very large relays.

The relay is rated for 2A@30V, and 60W above that.

See https://www.mouser.com/datasheet/2/315/mech_eng_tx-1075670.pdf figure 1 on
page 3 for a visual of this.

I'd recommend that you test the relay operation with an ohm meter before trying
a circuit. There should be conductivity between C and NC and none between C
and NO when the value is set to zero, and opposite that when it's set to a one.

If it doesn't work, upgrade the firmware to the latest and try again. There
have been a couple of relay bugs fixed in recent memory. Also make sure that
the relay on above and below rows are set to a very high and low number since
if that is enabled it will override the relay.

My service manager seems to be struggling with using the Sitemonitor Relay

tower if necessary. So, Packetflux states that the Relay control is maximum.
30v 1amp. So a little more than half the amps at 48v.

So, in the past (lighter loads on towers) we used this to trigger an external
relay and "open" the ground to the main power feed going up the tower. At 48v,
we sometimes are around 2amp on the bigger towers, some perhaps a bit higher
still. (with a 48v relay).

We should be able to use the Sitemonitor to somehow accomplish it.

Can anybody comment on this?

Hey guys,

We're looking at fine tuning our DC power solution for sites using more than
75w of power.

We're setting in with using the Traco BCMU-360 with a Meanwell SDR-240-24 or 48
volts power supply.

If we're using the Traco UPS unit, is there any advantage to using 24v vs 48v
power supply? It will only be powering a Netonix DC switch and the BCMU only
needs a 12v battery.

Also, we're looking at SiteMonitor to monitor the battery voltage and grid
power as well. Do you recommend this or the Tycon webmonitor (TPDIN)?

Thanks

[AFMUG] RP-5AC-Gen2 success stories?

2018-04-03 Thread Paul McCall
We are considering trying the RP-5AC-Gen2 radios.

We have a couple areas of the network we need to upgrade now if possible.
Can't wait until August or whenever to get ePMP3000 APs in the air

So, I have heard that UBNT finally has their stuff together on the GPS sync. I
need to use 40 MHz channels and Frequency reuse on the first tower in question
that is currently running the original 450 series APs

Yes, I know it won't sync with the rest of the network but the tower in
question already doesn't sync with a nearby ePMP tower.

So..

Interested in others opinions on this.

[AFMUG] AFMUG Members - list problem

2018-03-25 Thread Paul McCall
Hello,

I just wanted to touch base with everyone. As you are probably aware, we have
had a problem with the AFMUG list being VERY slow, like from may hours to a
couple days behind on postings to the list.

It is something we have working through and expect a resolution to within 48
hours. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Thank you for your patience.

[AFMUG] LIST BEING SLOW - VERY SLOW...

2018-03-23 Thread Paul McCall
Guys,

Over the weekend, we became aware that the list has been very slow. We are
digging in this AM as we all had a busy weekend here. It appears that there
might be some form of attack against the list from overseas.

Steve, who did you tick off?

Anyway, we will get it figured out and back to normal. Of course, by the time
you see this, you probably wont know that we are working on it.

To be fair by the time Cambium (really Motorola) gave up there was very little
point left in it. Having a 450AP slow down enough to talk to a 2X FSK radio
at 14Mbps meant you might as well not put up a 450AP.We are finding it
painful to have 430SM’s on 450 AP’s for the same reason and are having to pull
those off the network due to the capacity hit on the AP’s. It’s nice that we
can do that gradually, but there is no way I would want to have FSK SM’s on a
450i or 450m AP.

We are using the ones that Baicells sells with their gear, but looking to

Has anyone pulled some in from China directly? We have some experience with

You can hunt for something with a regulated output, or add a DC-DC converter

I thought maybe the straight BCM 48v series would be better, but they appear to
have the same spec.

I have to think I am missing something or who the heck would they sell these
to? The industry standard is 48v (54v with float) so, outputting 44v sustained
seems dumb.

Speaking from a consultant side it can be a little tricky with a new client. I
have been burned more than once thinking I was going to “hop in and fix it real
quick”. Anymore, I want to build relationships with my clients. One of the
last ones was a guy calls me at midnight having a traffic issue. He has two
upstream pipes he wants to try and utilize and needs some BGP help. It’s an
emergency situation because he is maxing out one pipe and the other is barely
being used. So, I talk with him for 45 minutes on his drive home before he can
give me remote access. I then spend the next hour or so writing out diagrams
on paper trying to learn his network as quickly as I can.

I then make some BGP changes and see traffic change and watch it for another 15
minutes or so. By this time his prime time is starting to wind down a little so
I can’t tell if it’s normal traffic utilization or I actually fixed it. I tell
client I made changes, spent 15 minutes typing up said changes, and say I
*think* I fixed it but don’t really know enough about the network to say I did.
Send client invoice and say let me know and we can look again at no charge.

Three days later I get a nasty e-mail saying I didn’t fix it, goes on and on
how he can prove I didn’t fix it blah blah. Oh, and by the way his normal
consultant logged in and fixed it. Well yeah because the normal guy knows a
whole lot more about the network than I did.

Another off the street client had me look at some drop out issues. Again, same
story. I have never touched the network and he calls me saying traffic just
randomly stops for a second or two at a time. Start looking at things, start
from the easiest things to look at. Spend 3 hours or so making sure configs
are correct, etc. Bill client and say get back to me. Sends me a nasty gram 3
months later saying it was the switch the routers were hooked into and they had
buffer issues. Why did I not tell him to replace the switch within the first
hour?!?!?!

These are just a few examples. Us WISP consultants are a small bunch and we
all know each other. My advice is you need to find a consultant you can build
a relationship with that works for BOTH of you. My regular clients know I pick
up the phone in a pinch and am fair with them. However, they have taken the
time and effort to build the relationship on their side too. Anyone new who
calls me that is looking for someone to answer the phone in that pinch
automatically starts out with a 3-5 network evaluation. I don’t go as far as
labbing everything up, but I make sure the documentation is spot on. I still
do the small break fixes, etc. but I am much more cautious about things. We
all have our own way of doing stuff. Some people and I don’t click. Some do.
I am sure that is the same with any other consultant.

We used them once and we weren't happy. I wanted to give them a try to see how
they compared to others.
What I thought was a simple BGP issue that could have been handled with a 15-30
minute phone call ended
up taking over two weeks. They "needed" to get our router configs and
virtualize them in their network. Then
figure out which interfaces were backhaul links, etc.

They then came up with a crazy network design that, to me, made no sense. After
them burning a lot of hours
on that, a simple call at the end of that process amounted to just creating a
single EoIP tunnel to fix the issue.

So my thought is they want to burn hours whenever they can.

So, IPArchitechsis there a current consensus on whether they are worth
investing time with? We are looking to layer BGP within (or upon) our OSPF
network to better control traffic between towers, subnets, etc.

IPA talked a good game, but we didn't roll out with them.

Any thoughts?

We will replace them for $ 45 each if you have a few of them to do at once and

Re: [AFMUG] Considerations for upgrading passed SAF Lumina link

2017-10-27 Thread Paul McCall
When I say 270Mb, it means the modulation is on the edge with 3ft dishes which
was a conscious design suggestion / decision 4 years ago because of the extra
tower cost and wind load.

I thought the Luminas (at least the ones I have) can only do 56Mhz or
something, as opposed to the new ones that can do the full 80 mhz? If I had a
Lumina where I can jump up the channel size, that would be ideal, another 30%
throughput. Couple that with another link on the same antenna would be hippie
skippy 

Subject: Re: [AFMUG] Considerations for upgrading passed SAF Lumina link

I have exactly 1 SAF Lumina link, 6GHz at 30 miles, that does ~360Mbps
(56MHz/256QAM weak-FEC ACM). I have fiber on both sides of this link, so the
full-duplex is needed. And even if it wasn't, I'd still want it for the
sub-millisecond latency, and rain fades on other paths causing traffic
reversal. We'll probably end up upgrading that to an IP20/PTP820 within the
next year or so.

So when you say 270Mbps... is that a 40 or 80MHz (56 usable) channel? But I
thought 40MHz would yield ~250Mbps on a Lumina? Anyway... if it's 40, can you
re-coordinate for 80? I'd also agree with what others have said, get another
set and do 2+0 since you want to keep the same antennas. I'm sure you can still
find an OMC or whatever SAF calls it.

[AFMUG] Remote Access from China Yes / No / How?

2017-09-30 Thread Paul McCall
I have a need to use RDP to my desktop from China, and googling the subject
seems kinda scary. Seems the Chinese government on ALL Internet connections
is off the chart with intentions to infect wherever and however they can.

Like maybe they would sniff that traffic / passwords etc. and attack the
destination aggressively. I suppose I could have someone on the local (US) end
changing the password daily from a predetermined chart, but that seems like if
they wanted to come right back in behind you before a PW was changed that they
could inject whatever they wanted quickly.

Of course there are VPNs, which they are now getting aggressive on blocking.
But, if you could establish a VPN you are potentially giving them even more
access directly to your LAN. Some of the other advice is don't use your
regular phone (buy a burner with WiFi calling ability) and then when you are
done toss the phone. Don't put anything on it with passwords etc.

I don't know but the whole thing seems a bit daunting. I have a need for about
10 days, so I need some connectivity back to the home front.

Anybody have real world experience on the subject?

Thanks in advance!

Re: [AFMUG] Pauls cashflow with afmug

2017-09-15 Thread Paul McCall
Thanks Steve,

I was thinking of that also. It’s actually more than that, we kept the support
only because there wasn’t a decent pay per incident plan with anything that
added value to solving a problem.

So, its around $ 200 per month. Last time, we got in $ 950 (approximately). I
don’t mind a difficiency (meaning PDMNet pays a decent part of it). And, we did
it the first 2 years fully bearing costs.

We really don’t mind doing this. I know there was a discussion last time about
options. My simple statement is “It works great” one less thing to deal with,
yet getting good results.

Any contributions are certainly welcome, especially at this time. We have
heavy losses with customer gear and recovery costs. The largest part of our
coverage area got 100mph+ gusts. A very large tree came apart (probably a
tornado) and blew that and a bunch of other stuff into a Rohn 25G 150ft. and
brought it down. Trashed everything on the tower also. So, there is a $ 15K
hit to get a new one up (Rohn 45G) and they just got the land cleared
yesterday, trying to get new foundation work done.

It was a tower site that we acquired and the foundations turned out to be
substandard, so we have to start from scratch and the property owner is not
contributing as he “Doesn’t make enough money from it”.

Re: [AFMUG] Storm recovery in Florida

2017-09-06 Thread Paul McCall
Yes, we have a coordinated physical disconnect from the power grid (and pull
the fuse on the batteries. We have utilize locals to help on the
non-commercial towers (and a few of the commercial ones… hh) .

We advise customers to unplug all their gear and that we will be doing the
coordinated shutdown, etc.

So, in theory after the storm, it starts with re-alignments of tower BHs’s from
the inside outwards and dealing with any wind damage. Praying we don’t have
actual towers down.

So, yes, those are great suggestions that we have implemented since the first
major hurricane we had in 2004. Customers are pretty understanding.

But, we will of course, have a lot of customers with misc. issues, from dead
radios / routers because they didn’t unplug it, or misalignments or wire damage
where something came loose and rubbed on something else for hours, or enough
for water to get in. Those kind of things take a lot of the recovery effort.
Its just a lot to cover with normal staff.

Everyone’s Internet has become s important (in most cases legitimately)
that after 3 or 4 days customers start being very vocal, some wanting to cancel
etc.

Wondering if you shut off to all your equipment and physically remove the power
from the grid where possible if it will help? Obviously there is the wind
damage, but I would think minimizing any strikes or power surges could save a
lot of headache after. Let your customers a couple hours before landfall, the
network will start going offline from south to north and then come up in that
direction as soon as the storm is over. I know it is a lot of area to cover,
but it might save your ass.

The Guest Wifi is on a complete different network (with rules) so no worries
with Hippa etc. The data sync service runs at night (on a different port –
with rules etc.). I guess mentioning that was irrelevant.

I think you can force OpenDNS with a Mikrotik rule that redirects and DNS
requests to OpenDNS (I think you can)

Re: [AFMUG] Any SOHO router (cost effective) that does SFP+?

2017-08-05 Thread Paul McCall
Yes, at least a couple ports. I suppose I am looking at a CCR that has enough
SFP+ ports to support 2 or 3 PCs at 10Gbit connection.

This is all a bit down the road (90 days) so perhaps there will be a lower cost
multi SFP+ port CCR out by then. Right now, the CCR1009 at sub $ 400 would
have one IN and one OUT.

I may be thinking a little ahead of my time 

At a minimum, I would isolate your ground bar from the tower and run your own
down conductor and then ground all your mounts and equipment to your ground
bar. If that doesn't cut it you could try adding isolation between your mounts
ant the tower but I doubt that is really needed.

equipment area, bond to the tower at that height, and go down from there?

On the “bonding everything together” scenario, if the tower ground is not as
good as the other grounds going down the tower (mine, the cellular companies,
etc.) won’t the differential in impedance cause the lightning to 1) likely take
the lesser impedance path down and/or 2) have the voltage not rise and fall
together and bad things happen from that?

On 1. it will be really difficult to completely isolate a piece of equipment
unless it is designed to float but good luck. If you are truly going to isolate
everything from ground then you won't need to worry about #2 as all will float.
You should check that the antenna you are using don't require a ground plane.
On 2. I Cadweld a 2/0 jacketed to an 8' rod at the top of the tower, not
isolated. I then bond (15 ton Hydraulic Crimp) it to a bus bar 5' below the top
for equipment grounds. Anywhere else there is a cluster of equipment I also put
a bus bar. I then take that 2/0 to the bottom to the last bus bar and then into
the ground ring.

  1. Wondering what materials people are using to isolate their mounts? What
is sufficient? Would the rubber from a thick radiator hose be enough to keep
the lightning from coming through? Double thicknesses?

One consultant recommended starboard, but I am not sure how I will craft that
into a work piece that would mold around a tower leg and be able to grip it.

  1. What size wire should be going down the tower to bond to my tower /
electrical ground?

I am assuming it should be insulated but is normal THHN jacketing enough to
have it truly isolate from something jumping over or does it have be in conduit.

and run the 2/0 down the tower. So, would you, just do a 2/0 starting at your
equipment area, bond to the tower at that height, and go down from there?

On the “bonding everything together” scenario, if the tower ground is not as
good as the other grounds going down the tower (mine, the cellular companies,
etc.) won’t the differential in impedance cause the lightning to 1) likely take
the lesser impedance path down and/or 2) have the voltage not rise and fall
together and bad things happen from that?

I was told they are isolated by the climber, using the red rubber isolators.
However, not ALL of the carriers do that. The subcontract from the cellular
company we are using said that also some of the tennis have harden plastic (or
similar material) at the bracket attachment point, thus isolating also.

For what its worth...

Well, somehow this cellular guys survive these direct tower hits. Tower # 1
from the weekend is a 500' tower that we are at 410 feet on. Two cellular
providers right below us and a FM station and Lojack above us, and we were the
only ones hit. Cellular guys have isolated ground bars at the top that are
connected to the outside shield on their large coax cables, with a "wrap kit".
At the bottom of the tower, they have another isolated ground bar and attached
the same kits to get the ground to the ground bar, then have their own grounds.
MOST are doing it that way. I will send pictures of 2 different carriers on
the same tower doing it differently.

Tower #2, is a 130ft water tower with Verizon. They are at the top of the
tower, have the same exact type setup.

This picture is from a 3rd tower (bottom) that I took pictures ... same thing.

We do have fiber and 48vdc to the top and 48vd protectors (Polyphaser) at the
top at both these towers. Everything blew, including the polyphaser that is
grounded to the tower itself (on both towers). Obviously, that isn't working :)

Nothing stops a direct hit. It will blow up everything that gets in its way.
You are probably seeing induced surges from nearby strikes.

Fiber to the top. Surge suppressors on the DC conductors.

We have two 500ft towers that get hit a bunch, and a water tank that gets the
same treatment from mother nature.

Anybody doing full isolation of all their antennas, equipment etc. at the top
of the tower and then running your own ground down the tower?

So theyre protecting themselves from a strike to the tower coming right into
their gear on its way to ground with an airgap? The induced voltage that does
get on the transmission lines will just shunt to ground via their isolated
ground?

Re: [AFMUG] Tower Grounding - carrier 1 pictures

2017-07-24 Thread Paul McCall
Well, the pictures are what the cell guys do at the bottom. In both cases, at
the top the cell guys ground to an isolated bus bar.

In our case, at the top, we ground to a bus bar (not isolated). So the center
lug on the ePMP gets a 6 awg cable attached to it run to our bus bar (all at
the top). Or EP-S16 also gets a 6awg cable running from its ground lug to the
ground bar.
