Log Files Size Limit

2008-06-13 Thread Bulls-n-Bears
AR Gurus,

I'm running AR System 7.0 on Solaris 9 , and my logging is turned on
for filters , sql and api. Within a few hours ( ~ 10 hrs ) , my filter
logs are reaching 2.0 G and not taking any more log messages.

we havent configured the log size limit from Admin tool. Is there
anyway I can configure the system to keep pumping more log messages ?
or rotate the logs ? move after limit reached and use new one etc?

Cheers,
BnB

Hi,

I just saw the same thing at a customer site. The maximum file size seems
to be 2 GB on their Unix-server. Maybe this limit can be increased on the
OS level?

If you turn on rotating log files, you can backup the file at an interval
that makes sure you does not loose data.

You can then remove any duplicate rows by looking at the previous backup
file.

Re: Form must have a web-alias error

2008-06-13 Thread Remprof
Hi Chintan,

Assuming that you have created a Archive form and you had rearranged the
Archive fields, then trying to save the form.

If the above assumption is true and you are getting the Web alias error,
then you have do the following.

1. Open the Archive form
2. Do the required changes
3. Click on the form tab in the menu and look for the Set Web Alias option.
4. Click on the Set Web alias option and input some alias name
5. Click on Save button.

The issue won't come this time. :) Give a try and let me know.

Thanks,
RemProf

What am I doing wrong? Anything else I am missing?

Hi,
For sure I logged in as the ticket's assignee/manager and they had
respective roles Infrastructure Change Assignee/Infrastructure Change

This is just a guess. The people who you set up as Change Managers must
be in the Change Management group (whatever you are calling it) and they
must also have the Infrastructure Change Manager role assigned and they
must also be set to Available.
Keep us posted - I am making certain assumptions here on the setup in

Gary,

The theory is correct. However, the practice might be that a Submit
actually also does a Modify.

You need to check the actual workflow to identify what is failing.
Also keep in mind that Submitter mode Locked is not the only
requirement. The fields may need to be Open at Submit, or the user
may have to have explicit change authority to the field to be able to
supply a value at all for any field that they are setting, and at
least all Required fields.

My guess would be yes since the BEST solution is to put a mid-tier on the
Crystal server to handle reports, complete with crystal viewer, and have your
primary mid-tier configured to point at BOXI/Crystal Report Server 11 on a
different machine with Midtier - that offloads reporting, and removes the need
for the .rpt files to get shared between the mid-tier server and the crystal
server.

The only machine I have IE 6 on is my old 2000 server desktop that was my
complete console into ARS 5.1.2, so there is no way to compare speed. It is
still set up with the 5.1.2 User and Admin Tools. It is something like a P III
800, so it doesn't do anything quickly. I don't have access to an current
hardware XP machine with IE 6. I just tested it (remoted in same subnet - I'm
over in the server building), and it is still faster (IE 6 on 2000 server) than
the User Tool on XP, and in fact it was faster than IE 7 on XP (remoted in from
mac over wireless) although the XP box has Outlook 2007, PowerPoint 2007,
Outlook Express and another IE 7 session already open (not bad for 1 gb) with
both hitting mid-tier simultaneously. Maybe IE 6 is faster... you'll need to do
some testing on equivalent platforms.

 Chris,

I figured that much because there is no way the Mid-Tier would outpace
the User Client if all were together on one server. Now that this
information on what your environment is out there can you tell me 2
more things before I retire tonight:

If we are running 2 load balance Web Servers each with: Quad Core Xeon
3.0 with 16GB or RAM as the Mid-Tier Servers, and we are running a
third Web server with matching hardware specs with Crystal Enterprise
XI 64-bit (SAP said BOXI Ent will run totally 64-bit) then:

 1. Will I need to install 32-bit JVM to run the mid-tier Crystal Viewer
and a 64-bit JVM to Run Crystal Enterprise XI?
 2. Will my Mid-Tier if accessed through IE 6 scream passed the user
tool in terms of performance like you said earlier by 10-15%?

Thank you everyone for your help...seriously!

No - and think I barfed up the specs on the AR server two messages ago
 - that's the SQL Server. Three separate machines for most functions.

 Mid-Tier, Flashboards, and Kinetic Webs:Win2K3 Enterprise R2 x64 on
 a DL380G5 2 x Quad Core 1.87 ghz Xeon and 12 gb Ram
AR Server, AREmail etc.; all apps except RKM: Win2K3 Enterprise x64 on
 a DL380G5 2 x Quad Core 2.33 ghz Xeon and 12 gb Ram
 SQL Server 2005 x64: Win2K3 Enterprise x64 on
 a DL385 2 x Dual Core 2.6 ghz Opteron and 10 gb RAM

A couple of 32-bit Win2K3 Enterprise servers on older DL380s host AIE
7.1 and RKM 7.2 on one, and another mid-tier with Crystal Report Server
XI just for reporting on another. They do not play well with others, or
in the case of CRXI won't run on x64. Every web server except CRXI is
Tomcat internal catalina (5.5.20 or 5.5.26); CRXI is on IIS and .NET to
stay out of the java world.

HTH.

It is true she doesn't, but if your submitter mode is locked, then you don't
need a license. What am I missing?

Re: Can't move the Change ticket's Status beyond Request For Authorization.

2008-06-13 Thread Lisa Westerfield
Sorry to jump in so late, but I would probably check the Approval
Process Mappings and see what status you have set to move to if there
are no approvers. This is where you can set the status defaults for
each stage.

Also, if there is a 'Business Approval' stage/phase, and there are no
approvers defined, the change remains in Request for Change status and
requires the Change Manager or Change Assignee to move the change
forward. (Sounds like you may have already tried this one.)

Also, if you want to run an arlog I would be happy to look at it to see
why the status isn't changing.

Thanks,
LisaD

One of the primary factors will be the languages you can/will support
on the web server. Try narrowing it down using that: java, php, ruby,
python, etc.

Well, what we have been tasked with is to find a blog that we can add to our
website. This particular website is HTML. The blog would need to be embedded in
our HTML.

We are hoping to change the above requirement to allow us to link to a blog
that is hosted by another site, but that is still in negotiation.

Error 193: 0xc1 when starting Remedy services

2008-06-13 Thread Steven Pataray
I wanted to track this issue which I resolved since I only saw one
occurrence of it in the arslist archives that did not have a solution.

My HelpDesk staff periodically reboot my remedy application server just to
clear any memory errors. They happen to do a reboot while I was on vacation
and had to contact me because the Remedy services didn't start. It kept on
getting this strange error:

Could not start the AR System Portmapper service on Local Computer.

Error 193: 0xc1

I checked my logs and it never clued me what the problem was. I went as far
as bringing up my DR server into production and contacted support for
assistance. We tried reinstalling the Remedy applications but as soon as the
install completed we would get the same error. No luck. Searching the
arslists did not show any assistance.

Well to make a longer story short, three days later I decided to Google the
error and found this.
http://www.brainlitter.com/archives/2006/07/error_193_0xc1.htm

It said that this guy had this same error when starting up MS SQL, not
Remedy related. The problem was that he found a file on his D
drive D:\Program. Hmm... Well I looked at my D: drive and low and behold I
found this same file. I looked at the create date then renamed it to
something else. I went to services and what do you know all the Remedy
services started right up.

How it got there? I was developing a batch file on that date a few weeks
ago and on one run I forgot to surround the path D:\Program Files\.. with
double quotes. So when it was run it created a NULL file called Program.

So like I said I wanted to track this error, because this very STUPID
mistake of mine wasted 3 days of my time trying to figure it out when it
could have been resolved in like 2 seconds. Well at least now I know my
Disaster Recovery process works.

2008-06-13 Thread Pierson, Shawn
I'm a big fan of Joomla (http://www.joomla.org/), although it's got lots
of functionality in addition to just blogs. It requires PHP and MySQL
and I've gotten it working on both Linux (Apache) and Windows (IIS),
although Linux and Apache are the easiest.

On another email, you mentioned that your site is pure HTML. I would
also suggest that if you do implement Joomla or something else, you
migrate all of your HTML content to that application. Pure-HTML
websites are considered outdated and difficult to maintain. It's like
using vi to edit Word documents.

Hey now we're talking about something that I can help with.

First of, you can use a standard html to display a blog provided by a third
party service, though you would have to use javascript and some ajax to pull
the information to you site. This gets a little messy and is not really the
best solution, though I have done this before and it gets the job done.

A better solution would be to use a third party app that's integrated into
your site. For this first decided on what language is good for your
environment, php, asp, asp.net, or cold fusion. This will most likely be
determined by your current envirmonet. If you end up going the asp.net route
I can recommend quite a few good applications that are worth looking into. I
have alot of experience with asp.net and ajax development so feel free to
email me off the list if you want.

OT: BBQ tour

My son just graduated from HS, and will leave for the Marines in October.
Sometime between now and then, he and I are going to drive cross-country on

We're still planning the specifics, and here's where all y'all come in:

I would love to know THE places to go in your part of the country (assuming
it's one I mentioned above - this will be almost entirely SOUTH of the
Mason-Dixon line) for outstanding BBQ, whether they're famous or a
hole-in-the-wall. We'll stay away from big chains for the most part (we
have Famous Dave's up here), unless it is a local/regional one with a good
local reputation.

Question: Permission Issues with Infrastructure Change Management 7.x

2008-06-13 Thread Bilinski, John

I am running into some permission issues while I am testing Change
Management 7x. For example I created a user chgmanager. This user has
is in the proper support groups and has the proper functional roles as a
Change Manager and Change Assignee. But when I open certain change
Requests I am getting this error:

ARERR [332] You do not have write access (at create time) to field :
179

ARERR [333] You have no access to field : 7 then a second error: ARERR
[313] Data types are not appropriate for relational operation:

Field ID:7 is The Status* field but I cannot find 179. What makes me
confused is that the Status* field is General Access. What gives?

Also when I go to another existing Change Request to update it when I
save the change it gives me this error:

ARERR [330] You do not have write access to field : Address

Here are the Permission groups my chgmanager user belongs to:

Asset Viewer
Infrastructure Change User (Fixed)
Contact Location Admin
Contact organization Admin
Contact People User
DSL Viewer

AR Permissions: Floating AR User License.
Access Restrictions: Unrestricted Access

Has anyone seen these permission errors before? Is there a white paper
on Access controls for ITSM that gives the low-down on permissions and
access?

Thanks.

2008-06-13 Thread Decou, Candace M
Yes - good point, we didn't ask whether any of the approval process
mappings have been changed or if they are as is out-of-box. But I still
think you need to specify that the Change Manager has role of Change
Approver - even if they are not specified as an approver in the Approval
tab, they still may need that role permission to 'Approve' the request
in this sense in order to move it along. Anyway, it wouldn't hurt to
give the Change Management Approval role to the Change Manager - try it
again and see if that works.

are no approvers.

Thanks,
LisaD

ARERR [333] You have no access to field : 7 then a second error: ARERR
[313] Data types are not appropriate for relational operation:

Field ID:7 is The Status* field but I cannot find 179. What makes me
confused is that the Status* field is General Access. What gives?

Also when I go to another existing Change Request to update it when I
save the change it gives me this error:

ARERR [330] You do not have write access to field : Address

Here are the Permission groups my chgmanager user belongs to:

I know this much, that I am on Change Management v7.0.3. As for the
patch level, that is a little tricky because I had an issue that I
discovered when I tried to install the data Management Tool where the
Data Management Tool installer could not find the patch level of any of
my ITSM installed applications. I called Remedy Support and they were
like don't worry about it and sent me a shared properties record to
import into the Share Application Properties form so the installer would
read patch level 6. Because of this I can't really tell you what patch I
am on.

Are you suggesting to download the Change management patch 7? I thought
it was only on patch 6? These error are not good because I know how the
Permissions structures are in Change 7 and these error just don't make
sense. I will download and try to install it unless you have run into
permission errors on Incident or Problem that are like this?

Thanks.

Re: Reporting from Mid Tier

2008-06-13 Thread Decou, Candace M
Yes Kathy - you can create and export ARSystem reports to csv from the
mid-tier. Go into Reports and set up a standard AR system report. Save
it, then Run it, but when you run select Run to Destination - File and
in Format select csv. This should automatically set the Character
Encoding field to windows-1252. Click on Run - then when prompted for
the Report File name give it a name and save it where you want. That's
about it. The only problem I sometimes encounter with this is that I am
prompted to Save the Report twice before it works.

Now there is also a way to 'export' the Crystal reports. Open up a
Crystal Report and once you are in the view of it, select Export Report
(this is a little icon under the File menu item). You can select the
format, including Excel, to export to. As for the errors you got when
you tried this, not sure - it could be an environment variable - a bad
path statement - who knows, so without more information I probably can't
help with that one.

Let me know if you need any other help with setting them up.

:-)

Re: Question: Permission Issues with Infrastructure Change Management 7.x

2008-06-13 Thread strauss
I would definitely download and install patch 007 to ITSM 7.0.03 - ON
DEVELOPMENT FIRST, and make sure that it does not affect anything that
you have in production, or circumvent any customizations. I came up
with pages of post-patch 007 actions that I had to perform, where patch
007 had reactivated workflow that I had disabled and replaced with
custom, or updated disabled workflow so that I had to carry that update
into my custom objects. It also wiped out Incident Patch 9002, so I had
all of that ready in a post-patch action checklist when I applied 007 to
the production server. I can hardly wait to do that all again at the
end of the month or in July, after patch 008 comes out.

I have had some permission errors on the Problem Investigation module,
specifically Known Errors, but these may have been resolved by adding a
global assignment rule for Problem Management. Most of these
applications require a LOT of configuration, not all of it documented,
before they work at all. As I said, I have yet to put my toes in the
water on Change Management... it's coiled up on my server like a water
moccasin, waiting to strike.

BTW, I haven't heard anyone else chime in with patch 007 to Change
Management fixed my problem(s), so I don't know if any sites have
applied it and seen improvement.

discovered when I tried to install the data Management Tool where the
Data Management Tool installer could not find the patch level of any of
my ITSM installed applications.

Thanks.

Just out of curiosity (I have not started the process of configuring
Change Management on our system yet - was too busy getting IM, SLM, RKM,
and Kinetic Request implemented, and still have PM to go), are you on
patch 007 of the ITSM 7 application? Patch 007 consisted _primarily_ of
fixes to Change Management, so I would not want to even attempt to
configure and test it at a lower patch level.

Management 7.x

**

Is there a white paper
on Access controls for ITSM that gives the low-down on permissions and
access?

Thanks.

Hey Rick - if you end up just hitting 5 to go south you will probably
miss this, but just in case my favorite is Back Forty BBQ. They have
about 4 or 5 locations - all in the northern California area (more north
even than I am - I have to drive almost 60 miles to get to the closest
one). It's Austin Texas style and I go out of my way to buy their sauce
- ymm. You may not make it there, but you never know. Have lots of
fun and lots of adventures. See their site:

Rick,

Congrats to your son and you too! And what a great idea! Ever watch
Feasting on Asphalt on Food Network?

Lots of Chicagoans prefer Russell's Barbeque - they've been here since dirt
was invented and have a several locations. But if you want to hit the road
over the 4th of July weekend there's a shindig called Ribfest Naperville
which attracts resturants from all over the midwest (which apparently
stretches to include Famous Dave's and several Texans). Bobby Flay's been
here, Alton Brown too. Check www.ribfest.net. Fireworks, secret sauces,

Yeah, I know that opinions can get kinda heated if people insist that
there's only ONE kind of PERFECT BBQ. That's why I'm taking the view that
cooked meat on my plate is rarely bad. I'm looking to try the best from
everywhere, and enjoy it all, especially the people we meet along the way.
We'll be taking some pics and video along the way, too, for posterity.

Thanks to all who've contributed so far. I look forward to more, too!

Re: OT: BBQ tour

2008-06-13 Thread David.M Clark
Since you're going to drive all the way over to North Carolina (which you of
course just HAVE to do if you're on a legitimate barbecue tour), I recommend
Bob Melton's BBQ in Rocky Mount... although I'm not sure that they rebuilt
since one of the hurricanes flooded them out. If that place is gone, you'll
have to make do with Jim Gardner's BBQ on Hwy 301 where that town is concerned.
Since you're on Hwy 301 in Rocky Mount anyway, drive twenty miles or so south
to Wilson, NC for Parker's BBQ. Order family style. Highly recommended, and
there hasn't been a President through there in years who hasn't stopped to eat.
(The Secret Service agents leave with bags of takeout.) You can't go wrong
with any of those three, so long as you realize that pork BBQ is the only REAL
BBQ... a fact no one will tell you until you get past Louisiana. Have fun on
the trip.

-D

P.S. Since you're that close, you might as well get over to Nags Head for the
beach.

Walking table, reading and setting hi-liting rows

2008-06-13 Thread Dwayne Martin
Dear List,
I am sure this is spelled out very plainly in the documentation, but I can’t
seem to find it.

I want the user to be able to hi-lite table rows, save the entry, and have
those same table rows hi-lited when the entry is re-displayed.

So the user will cntl-click several rows to hi-lite them. Then on save, an
Active Link Guide will walk the table, and if the row is hi-lited it will write
the Entry ID for the row into a Char field.

But how does it know if the row is hi-lited?

On Display, another AL Guide will walk the table, and if Char Field is LIKE “%”
+ ‘Entry ID col’ + “%” it will hi-lite the row.

But how does it do that?

Actually, I’d be happy if somebody could point out where this is explained in
the manual.

Get all results from a SQL call

2008-06-13 Thread Brittain, Mark
Hi All TGIF,

I need to do a SQL query to a database outside of Remedy and gets all of
the contact records for a customer and drop them into a field in a
ticket. Of course I can get the first or display a list if there are
multiple. There has to be a way to get all records that meet the
criteria.

ARS 6.3 patch 20
Oracle 9.2
SunOS 5.9

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hey Rick,

If you are indeed heading south on 5 towards Cali, in Portland there is
Buster's Texas style BBQ. One of the best I have seen in town, but I
like the Hole-in-the-Wall type places myself.

1. Create SQL view of the data from your Remedy database.
2. Create a View form in Remedy using that SQL view
3. Create a table field using that new View. Now when the table refreshes it
will have a local copy of all of the records and you can table walk it.

Re: Walking table, reading and setting hi-liting rows

2008-06-13 Thread Andrew Fremont
You could use the keyword $ROWSELECTED$ for to check if row is selected.

Extract from the manual
$ROWSELECTED$
 --
Evaluates if row in table field is selected:

   - 0 = Not selected
   - 1 = Secondary selection
   - 2 = Primary selection

This keyword is only valid in the context of a table loop guide.

So the user will cntl-click several rows to hi-lite them. Then on save, an
Active Link Guide will walk the table, and if the row is hi-lited it will
write the Entry ID for the row into a Char field.

But how does it know if the row is hi-lited?

On Display, another AL Guide will walk the table, and if Char Field is LIKE
 % + 'Entry ID col' + % it will hi-lite the row.

But how does it do that?

Actually, I'd be happy if somebody could point out where this is explained
 in the manual.

2008-06-13 Thread Frank Caruso
I do not have the 7 docs handy but I know there is lot of information in the
6.3 docs about table walking, specifically about what you are asking.

1. Remedy knows if the row is selected using the $ROWSELECTED$ keyword. I
believe it even knows which row was selected as the primary and which was
selected as the secondary.

2. In order to highlite a row you need to reference the table name and a row
number in a set fields action.

Page 659 in 6.3 basic guide has everything you need to know. Look for a
Workflow Extras section in the 7 docs.

The thing about $LASTID$ is that it can only be called in an Active Link,
because it grabs the last record created by that client. The form involved
is set by the form name on the AL that calls the action.

Re: Can't move the Change ticket's Status beyond Request For Authorization.

2008-06-13 Thread Lisa Westerfield
Regarding Functional Roles: All they should need is the Infrastructure
Change Assignee role or the Infrastructure Change Manager role in order
to move this change forward.

Also -
I just went back and read where you stated that the Status field is
disabled. This is eerily similar to an issue I experienced during my
first Change implementation. We found a couple of problems during
troubleshooting, so maybe I should take you down that path as well. The
tool obviously thinks that there is an approval necessary at this point,
which is why the status field is disabled, so let's try this:

1. We found a problem with the approval process not running completely
- To verify that the Approval Server is running, or to audit Approval
Server activity, you can turn on Approval Server logging in
AP:Administration form to check this.
2. If you are using the OOTB approval process configurations, which
process name are you using (for example: Change Level CI - Business). I
can compare these administration settings to what I have OOTB to see if
there are any differences.
3. What are the phases in your approval process configuration, where
the starting phase is Request for Authorization?

Thanks,
Lisa

Yes - good point, we didn't ask whether any of the approval process
mappings have been changed or if they are as is out-of-box. But I still
think you need to specify that the Change Manager has role of Change
Approver - even if they are not specified as an approver in the Approval
tab, they still may need that role permission to 'Approve' the request
in this sense in order to move it along. Anyway, it wouldn't hurt to
give the Change Management Approval role to the Change Manager - try it
again and see if that works.
Lisa - am I wrong on this?

Sorry to jump in so late, but I would probably check the Approval
Process Mappings and see what status you have set to move to if there
are no approvers. This is where you can set the status defaults for
each stage.

Also, if there is a 'Business Approval' stage/phase, and there are no
approvers defined, the change remains in Request for Change status and
requires the Change Manager or Change Assignee to move the change
forward. (Sounds like you may have already tried this one.)

Also, if you want to run an arlog I would be happy to look at it to see
why the status isn't changing.

I have seen something similar when 1)we ran out of float licenses, 2)the
ARS permissions were Read, 3)the EA chaining order was incorrect, 4)the

applied to the user appropriately

3: If you are authenticating, check this setting in the server
information AR Administration Console/System/General/Server

4: The best way to check #4 is to delete the People record, and
completely re-add the person. Then check the licensing details on both
the people and user forms.

5. Check the license that is being applied to that user when they log
in. AR Administration Console/Application/'Users/Groups/Roles'/License

Candace - We had tried turning off customer notifications by also
setting the 'Notification Availability' to No. It didn't work though -
the customers were still getting their default notifications (request
submitted successfully, request resolved, etc.).

The entire Notifications tab appears to only apply to support user
notifications.
Also, the Default Notify Mechanism only applies as a backup notification
method if the primary default method is not available.

Yes, what you want is doable - here is how
1. No you can't set up 'User' defined notifications for these users but
you can turn off the notifications. Go to the Notification tab in the
People form and under the Notification Availability, select 'No'. In
addition and/or instead of that you can also select something other than
Email in the Default Notify Mechanism. That's going to turn off all
notifications for that person though, so again if you want something
customized on a per-person basis you are probably going to have to build
extra workflow. So this option is pretty much all or nothing - and you
need to have your users understand that.

2. Take a look at the form NTE:SYS-Define NT Events. This form holds
all the possible notification events - but again this is for everyone or
no one (either non-support or support), but it will help you understand
what is triggering the notifications.
Take a look at all other NTE forms too. Not that they will help.

For the rest I will have to research and get back to you - I have a 2
hour meeting that I need to attend now.
Hope this helps!

Candace,

Thanks for your response.

What specific type of notifications are you trying to configure for
these non-support people?

I want to create User notifications for the non-support staff people
so that I can turn off the OOB default notifications individually based
on if the individual customer does not want to receive certain
notifications. Can I do that?

I don't necessarily need to change the wording of a notification I just
want to allow our help desk staff to turn off some of the individual
notifications for Non-Support Staff customer profiles upon request from
the customer. So if a customer does not want to receive a Incident
Closure notification I can modify their notification list to turn that
off only for them.

If this is not possible what form connects the Events to the actual
filters that fire the notifications so I can get started with these
customizations. So far I have found the forms with the NTE: acronym on
the form names. These seem to be the back-end forms form the ITSM
Notifications but I need help finding the form that connects the
Notification Event (NTE:LoadNotifiationEvents form) to the actual filter
that fires off the email. What are the filter Names? You don't have to
give me all maybe just one or two so I can start my investigation.

Thanks.

I thought I read some where that you can now specify the Form that you
want the LastID from - is this true - or am I just wishing :-)

 THANKS!

Hopefully you'll hit Dixies' BBQ there in Bellevue before heading out.. that
is some good stuff, Meet the Man!

If you make it to Atlanta, Slopes and KC Pit are both excellent and about a
mile apart:

My son just graduated from HS, and will leave for the Marines in October.
Sometime between now and then, he and I are going to drive cross-country
 on
a BBQ tour. We'll start and end in Seattle, but we intend to hit all of
 the

South, North Carolina, Memphis, Chicago, and Kansas City.

We're still planning the specifics, and here's where all y'all come in:

I would love to know THE places to go in your part of the country
 (assuming
it's one I mentioned above - this will be almost entirely SOUTH of the

have Famous Dave's up here), unless it is a local/regional one with a
 good
  local reputation.

  Thanks in advance for sharing!
