Sonic has speed-shoes and a single-hit shield, and also temporary invincibility. 3k introduces shields for water / fire / electric threats, and a double-jump ability. Megaman has a wider variety of equipment, which you obtain primarily by defeating bosses (I like to compare BK2-3 to Megaman in some ways).If what everyone really wants is an interactive audio drama with Swamp / Redspot / RTR style controls for the interactive bits, get together some voice-actors and sound-designers, and we can make a Swamp Campaign to make it even easier.I mean, that's not what I want. I like The Gate because it feels more like a video game than most audio games. It has problems (vast featureless spaces is the main one that comes to mind), but hardly anyone ever complains about those.What makes a game worthwhile in general? What is the purpose of a game? That needs answering long before money gets involved.

I don't mean to be a party pooper, but I'm sure they're using the survey as a form of acquiring user demographics. Accessible or not, it probably goes beyond the spirit of the survey and website to freely distribute the link. What people do outside the forum is their own business, but I'd hate for there to be wind of the link to bypass their survey getting back to those who are trying to obtain this kind of user data, and the fact that the survey is inaccessible is not enough excuse for us to disregard the possibility that we might be stepping on toes. I highly recommend that the mods (or the link poster) remove the link in question, in the interest of preserving forum integrity. The buzzword these days is [XR], which is a mix of altered reality, virtual reality, and combinations thereof. VR headsets come in a variety of flavours, ranging in price and novelty factor, bit of a comparison [here]. There's the ultra-cheap cellphone headsets like the Nintendo Labo VR Kit, or a few cellphone based headsets, they go for around 50$ to 80$'ish. There more of a dock with a bluetooth remote you strap to your face, so you'll need a compatible cellphone that can work with it, generally only good for some select mobile games, movies, demos.The second tier is something like the Oculus Go for 200$ or Oculus Quest for 400$, same capabilities as above, runs on android but is more standalone and doesn't need a cellphone, may support more VR style controllers. Some of the more powerful ones, like the Oculus Rift S for 400$ or HTC Vive Cosmos for 700$ need a higher end PC to connect to, but can handle dual VR controllers, then there's something like the [Valve Index] headset with steam knuckle controllers, which goes for 999$. Wide field of view, good refresh rate, meant to be worn long term, but the price is pretty steep.As for accessibility, there's a few articles around on low vision access such as [here], which talks about microsofts VR cane-troller, and googles experimental spatial audio navigation system, you can read a bit more about those [here], there's also some blind and low vision api software like [SeeingVR].I haven't played around with one, so I can't say how accessible things like menus, games, or apps are, but I'm not finding too much information on anything concrete about that, so would probably lean towards "not remotely accessible". If you're making a cassette tape simulator, it might behoove you well to go to ASoundEffect and do a search for cassette. There are very cheap sound effect libraries that you can get here, and then down sample (because you don't really need to distribute 24-bit, 96K+ sound files with your program).Kai

This trick of reading the map with the Jaws cursor applies equally well to other rogue-likes. You just have to ignore the noise you hear when you move up a line, or perhaps there is a setting to let it read you the character you land on instead of the line, I wouldn't be surprised given how customizable Jaws is.

As a   person who grew up in the 90's and had a tape player from an early age, I can promise you that when  you pressed buttons on a tape machine they did not make a digital beep. It is a mechanical device. Also, the tape going into the machine sounds were actually tapes being taken out of and put into a   case. Other than that, it was alright. Nice try though.

Sounds like you wanted it to be an everything game.  I can understand the story part, but the rest?  Why would you have modern weapons in this type of game, and why must you have a million different options.  Sometimes it's about doing what you can with what you have, and that's the point of this game, conserving resources while being aware of your surroundings and ready for anything, even if it's frustrating at times, because it feels that much better when you beat it.  If all games let you do all things, it would be pointless to even have different ones.  I mean you don't read Harry Potter expecting starfighter dogfights, and you don't watch Starwars expecting magical potions that let you shapeshift, but both are good for their own reasons.Yeah, it's hard even on easy, I won't deny it, and if you don't like that it's okay, but don't blame the game.  Plenty of experienced audio gamers were able to play it, and since adventure at c: was made by the same guy and the point was that it would be harder than all the other sidescrollers, it makes sense that this one would also be difficult.  I'd consider my self a moderate level player, and I managed to beat it on hard after a few tries, though never on nightmare.There was a demo, and letsplays, and feedback on the game's thread.  You probably should have checked one of those firstI'd suggest you go play shooter CD or Scrolling Battles 9.6 from masonasons.me or Bloodshed release the pain from samtupy.com if you want a mindless shootemup, I like those sometimes too.I mean I appreciate that you aren't saying everyone should also hate it, and there is no shame in not being great at computer games or preferring certain types, but your reasons still mostly seem pretty silly and preventable to me.

When you use x, the cursor centers on you. If you press r the cursor goes back to your position so if you get lost you can backtrack. If you move lines up+down, yes indeed you get to hear a line from your character sheet for some reason. My way of dealing with this is to simply not listen to it. If you noticed, if you move right or left it doesn't do that. So basicaly move one tile up, then immediately move one tile left or right, and if you are curious what's directly above you just move back, it will read the tile correctly now.

thanks that helps, but how exactly do I see things that are immediately next to me, I can't even see where I am on the screen, so that's a problem, also, generally when I look up or down a row, the Jaws I use reads the whole line so it is hard to keep up with where things line up to one another, could you give me a few tips on that?I actually use the x and ctrl+x features a lot, especially the second, though I don't quite get how I use them to navigate and get my guy up to who I want to kill.Thanks for the startup help, but if you could help me a bit more with that, I'd be very thankful.

Hey. I'm trying to answer your questions. 1. Now it is a bit tricky, because you need to use the x command (map view mode), which lots of people have problem with, it is not that hard in my opinion. Basicaly when you are getting hit one of two scenarios are happening: You get hit from one tile afar, which is not that hard, just use x and look in the nine corresponding directions, and if you found the culprit just bash away. The second is that you get hit from two or more tiles afar. Well, use autofight or some combination of controlled blink+allies+ranged combat to hopefuly take the threat down. Or just switch off the autofight restrictions, which i do not suggest. They are a good way of tellingif you're in danger of dying or not, i have it that when my hp drops below 50% i need to manualy fight or look for an escape route. 2.: If you want to go tactical and worry about dungeon positioning, the only suggestion i can offer is to use the map. I know it is not a lot, but everyone has his/her own map exploration ways. Usualy the only time i get tactical is when i have a huge pack of idiots piling upon me, or if i need to dig a killhole to lure off dangerous casters in elf for example. 3. Use auto explore, when it says done exploring, press ctrl+g, then press >. It will take you down one level in the current branch. You can travel in this way to every level of every branch, for example, ctrl+g, press l, and then 5, it will get you to lair 5 only if you know the way down of course. 4. Use every means in your disposal to kill the monster, for example lots of people forget about god abilities and try to use them when they're at 10 hp. If you know that there is a dangerous monster, try to deal with it in asap, not wait and say: Oh, i have 150 hp still, i won't be dead. Some monsters are supernasty.

@darkThe sage at the beginning gives the wrong advice to newbies. i have suggested much more better quests for him to direct new players to and the staff quickly agreed with my idea and were working on it.Do not be discouraged by the quests at the garden. those are actually for  level 5, even 10 or above, in my personal opinion.In fact, @dark, i thought this is a  great game towards your preference. I know you like exploration, no PVP, relaxed atmosphere and open world, plus the  staff and community are just brilliant. I'll write a review about it later but for now if you can stand a game without a soundpack, give this a try because it is quite unique. It has its disadvantages but compared to what it's got, it's worth playing.

Yeah the servey is totally bs, had to use ie and hit random things to get it to work.The sound lib is not free, you just get a web code to paste and order it.But hmmm I suspect pro sound fx is a bit expensive for what it is, lets see, 50 us bucks for 93 tracks?The only reason I did this was for the free lib.The gdc conference with sonnis yealds a lot of free stuff yearly, true its not everything but its 10-30gb a year and while a lot of it is repeated its worth it.

Hello all,I've heard some of you can manage DCSS and I played it both when I could see and now that I can't too. I have figured out how to keep track of staircases and such which was a major problem for me before, but wondering about some other stuff and if any of you can answer, please let me know.1. when I am being attacked, I have trouble finding out from which direction I was being attacked from. I had used up all of my magic on my lst character but If I had gone in and ripped the guy apart, I might have won, though he was a tough guy for the first floor (a spear-chucking gnoll) but probably one more hit, even with a cruddy weapon would've finished him off. However, when your hp gets low, you aren't allowed to autofight, so was wondering what you guys did when that happened.2.   how do you figure out the layout of the dungeons, and your own position for that matter as I am never quite sure where I am on screen or how the screen is laid out. I know you should be in a corner or corridor, but don't know beyond that in order to pull that off.3.  I use waypoints to keep track of stairways as I like to clean out an entire floor when I can, but if someone knows a better way, please let me know.4. how do you avoid things when a really nasty monster is in your way.just trying to play, it's very fun but some of the stuff is proving very hard.

My problem with that sorry excuse for a game is that it was ridiculously hard even on easy mode, the progression of the story mode was making me so sleepy I had to stack up on coffee and redbull to keep me going no jokes, and although there was a variety of ennemies, the weapons at your disposal were pathetic; a knife, a bow and a sword. Oh and before you mention it, no the lightning rod doesn't count as it is only useful on one kind of ennemies, two if you count the vampire bats and crap as it's own. Like come on, at least give me some more weapons, idk a flamethrower, a gun, a hammer, a grenade launcher; I want my 1 to 0 keys to be each represented by a weapon choice, and don't get me started on the items which were non existent; health item, poison curing, arrow pouchs and zombies cure if memory serves. Honnestly the only regret I have was even spending my precious time on that piece of garbage. If you enjoyed the game, good for you mates, I certainly didn't.

Agreed with @16, which is why I set the bar kind of high with post 12.  Once upon a time you went to a store and purchased a finished product.  Even now in various mainstream circles if a game is rittled with bugs you'd better believe the trolls are gonna let you know.  Obviously perfection cannot be achieved, but I also think the standard certainly has to be there and does not include taking shortcuts just to sell a product.  I'm a little more forgiving if your product is a freebee, but even then you're subjecting it to public opinion.BTW, this has always been my view.  The problem is that when you begin moderating a forum that has strict guidelines dedicated to limiting abusive hate-speech, you have to take some firm stances, even if you believe what the trolls are saying is true.  The bottom line here is, the customer is always right.

Lets just hope this lasts. If what happened, to Cuddley is the same as to me, it probably will. Back in what, 2017, 2018 I used to play clones, litterally all the time. I never actually cloned games, well not intirely. But i would play them, I would play cuddleys clones, I'd play charlies clones, and in the beginning I didn't know about code having been stolen, etc, but I just thought it was a fun game. Even when I did learn of that though, I kept playing them. I just thought, hey, cool game, lets play it! I even tried making an up spin off in late 2017 because I got the source from someone and that was before I knew about code theft and things, so i thought it was open sourced. But one day in the end of 2018, something just, clicked. I don't want to get into the details of what exactly happened, but after that, I realised how dumb that shit is, and Haven't played a clone ever since. It's probably good that I didn't know the forum even existed back then, or I probably would've gotten banned, .My point is, that people can change for the better in that regard. For me that change so far has remained, and I've no doubt it will. I hope the same happens with cuddley.I do wonder what will happen with the gabdillon games though, because as far as I know cuddley's a staff member and they're hosting tk, redspot, up, btb, and i think a few others. And I think ht was the one who gave them the sourcecodes, but I could be wrong there.

There is a lot of truth to what Xeron says. Although I genuinely want to create something that pleases everyone, one of my most valuable resources at the moment is time. And that time must be invested in value added tasks. Unfortunately making a PC version falls low on that priority list. However you never know what the future holds. But for now the console remains the top priority.The console is not yet released. I'm in the process of acquiring final quotes for the enclosure before putting together the investment proposal. This has taken much longer than anticipated.The more support the project gets obviously increases its chances of success. So please use the "get one"page if you would like. Or follow us on facebook or twitter. It's all positive in the eyes of an investor.It's nice to see people using and enjoying the GDE. I'm always happy to hear feedback. New features are on the way. Arnald, maybe Sync.com would work?You can get 6GB for free if you use that link, and you get another GB by doing the tutorial which is very easy.  The web interface is good but not great (significantly better than dropbox) on all systems accept Safari, but their is a desktop app for Mac, Windows, Iphone, and Android, and they are all pretty good for accessibility.It doesn't have traffic limits like DB, either, which is really nice.As for virtual navigation when reading maps in these types of games, maybe the following addons could help?Virtual RevisionandObj PadI know it's a bit clunky but, you can at least change the keystrokes to anything you want to make it somewhat more efficient.

The GDE is expressly for designing and testing games for the console. Making it have a computerized version would definitely subvert the sales model for the hardware, defeating the purpose and robbing the developer of what income there could be for the product. I don't even think we need to give the GDE reassignable buttons for this reason -- it would be promoting the software over the hardware. In such a niche market community as we are, such a move would be detrimental; why would people buy the console when they could just play the games for free in their computer emulation of the hardware?Kai

Honestly I don't think the owner of that archive is even around, I've tried emailing the address with new stuff several times and have never received a response. TTS skits themselves haven't completely died, there's a YouTube community around them and even a dedicated wiki, but as Crashmaster said most TTS skit makers in the blind community have generally moved on.

I can't speak of the Jaws curser, but with both Supernova and NVdA I always found the basic problem was that you couldn't get the damn thing to vertically read one symbol at a time, even with nethack and constantly hearing dash slash bar bar dash dash slash z slash d  didn't tell you much about where you are . I tried brogspeak, but apart from the fact the resolution seemed to be a bit bonkers making the graphics unhelpful and that I always needed to quit the game with the windows task manager, I always had a miner issue telling what was where on a basic maze level, indeed I've noticed that every roguelike access fix always tends to concentrate on having the player auto move or auto target objects, without concentrating on giving the player any idea of actual screen regions or position of the basic walls etc that make up the dungeon the way even the simplest audiogame would. What I mean is, if I'm in a 5 x 10 room witn a treasurechest, a magic fountain and exits on the north and east, or am in a corridor 3 tiles wide that branches to the north, I'd much rather the access fixes gave me that information and let me move, rather than just told me where the goblins etc were in my current range of site, since inevitably I'll always run out of targets at some point or not entirely clear on how to get from A to B successfully. I'd love to see someone appproach a roguelike access by actually telling the players the type and size of each dungeon room they were in, EG corridor chamber etc, rather than just working on auto targeting.

I've had the most success playing Nethack, SLASHEM (and its extended variant), ADOM, and DCSS while using JAWS. JAWS' free-form mouse cursor lets you explore the screen easily, and at least in my experience, it was a lot more comfortable than NVDA's review cursor.Have you also tried Brogue Speak? That one doesn't need any screen reader to play, as they've incorporated eSpeak right into the package.I do love ADOM's wilderness map and quests -- and in fact, it's for this reason that I wish ZAngband were workable, but it doesn't do cursor tracking at all, so your focus isn't on your character, it's hovering somewhere in neverland.Kai

The only problem I have with JS is th asynchronous functions thing. Let's be honest: the syntax is utterly broken at this point (and it takes the async paradigm to the absolute extreme). I can see JS as being a viable target but I can't imagine that we'll have many people (from this community) learning it considering that if you look up "_javascript_ tutorial" your bound to find a tutorial that's *not* ES6 or higher.

I tried installing android studio, and here are my results.I installed the JDK, enabled the access bridge, launched the studio, got help with enabling the screenreader in preferences, but no luck. When we tried to create an activity, I couldn't go and view the file, the only thing working consistently was the OCR shortcut, and even that was not too helpful in some instances. Suggestions as to how to setup the editor would be greatly appreciated.

I don't like JS that much. Like, I'll use it, but its an absolute and utter mess. The language has inherited so many problems from previous versions (i.e. confusions with the this keyword and so on) and the fact that it takes asynchronism to the absolute and utter extreme end of the spectrum. In JS now not only are you required to remember the amount of levels your into with braces, your now also required to remember the level of nesting your in with the asynchronous functions your using. I so do wish we had another language other than JS that browsers supported but meh...I mean, I'll use it but I don't have to like it.

In terms of ultrabooks, I've heard great things about Huawei's Matebook lineup. It might be a good computer but it's pretty pricey though that obviously depends on where you buy it.

Yay, more roguelike chat. YEah, my biggest problem is that the NVDA cursor doesn't behave in a way that is condusive to playing well. Jaws does better because its mouse cursor actually can track your position verticlaly as well as horizontally. I'm actually more a fan of playing these games on Linux, but that's obviously not for everyone.I haven't looked at any of the games in a while, being on more of a 4X kick, but they are still definitely fun and a lot more accessible than the common reputation around here suggests.

Hmm, sounds good, argh I just don|t know what to get xD.I just created a portable copy of NVDA on an older USB Stick, I'll see if I can convince a person at the electronics store to plug my stick into a win tablet so I can play around with it a bit.Can I find basic NVDA touch commands somewhere? The manual isn't really talking about touch controls.Greetings Moritz.

I have not been keeping up. It's seemed like an expensive novelty, imo. But as everyone insists it's the next big thing, and I don't know where to begin with research, and there could be more to discuss than just a compilation of articles or whathaveyou, this topic was conceived.What is the current state of VR? Products and costs, equipment, games, accessibility, availability, maturity as a technology? What do people expect in the near future? What seems plausible, unlikely, desirable, pointless, etc?What thinkst thou?
