a little gem I only recently discovered

Hey folks,So this is by no means a new game, hell I downloaded it ages ago and it's been sitting on my hard drive until I finally cracked it open out of curiosity the other day.I'm talking about Preludimals by the developer Aprone.it's a deceptively simple game, all you have to do is lay down tracks to guide an arm in to squishing rats and avoiding mice, but it is a lot more challenging than it sounds!I have beaten the game, completed all 24 levels and the included challenge, but I freely admit it took me a couple days!I'd recently been watching Markiplyer's video's on youtube and had a bit of a desire for a track building game after watching his review of bridge builder and this perfectly filled the spot.On top of these features that challenge your brain you also have a built in story that gives you a glimpse into some of the crap poor Aprone has gone through over the years, written from the perspective of three amusing, if slightly mad, gamers. the references to his other games are very tasteful and it's overall definitely well worth a try.Once again that's Preludimals: https://www.kaldobsky.com/ssl/audiogames.php

Re: In the midst of rage, we found a place in the cosmos.

Hello folks.Following my post on I believe page 1, I wanted to publish the new Cosmic Rage message of the moment which is, if you like, a public statement from the hosting team.Fundamentals.It's a word that means basic, building blocks, going back to the very beginning.Activities are a building block of what makes Cosmic Rage, Activities are what makes and breaks most games. Puzzles, progression and performance fill people with a sense of learning, of joy of making new goals and achieving new heights within a project, game or otherwise.Through communication with our Host to Player Liaisons, Newbie helpers and various players on a strategic planned and competitive level it is our intention to outline and implement a restaged activity front. Removing the dead wood of crumbling, unplayed and unwanted activities and replacing them with ground breaking and market leading pathways to allow you, and your character to develop on unique, exciting and involved pathways.Cosmic Rage claims to put forth an image of unyielding faith in our player's and in our ability to set high targets and it is through the changes to activities that we intend to prove this claim as the ultimate truth. It is vitally important to the hosting team that we listen and understand the complaints, the joys and the wants of both our current, our former and our future players. To be able to mould these desires into a game that is thriving with ideas is a true pleasure for both builder and coder alike.By firming up the foundations of Cosmic Rage it will allow us to open up and expand previously untouched systems, answer questions that have been left hanging for very long times and complete our transition to a fully realised exploration and combat balanced game.Seguing smoothly into this subject, further investigations are going to be launched into the current combat system and more specifically missions with the idea of cosmic rage also taking the lead on involved, impactful changes with missions that require not just who can output the most accurate damage, but who can output the damage at critical moments? The third but none the less extremely important changes that you can look forward to on the mud that cares is giving you the power to develop your character through the use of timelines, developmental quizzes and explanations for what happened and where.Cosmic Rage intends to break new ground in the level of detail we provide to you and the level of enjoyment you get out of the game.Join us.Join us in 2021 on the mud that cares.

Re: reflections from a former developer

2020-11-12 Thread AudioGames . net ForumGeneral Game Discussion : dardar via Audiogames-reflector

Re: reflections from a former developer

There are some really interesting thoughts raised in this topic and in particular I admit to enjoying the views people have xpressed.I've hesitated on posting simply because of well, what to say!Especially as a lot of people already covered what I would say. I think it's important though to point something out.Something I've seen several developers do, and something they continue to do:code for cash. They know they're not going to get rich. But they'll slap a project together, hell it might even be a solid 6 out of 10. They'll charge for it, 5 bucks, 10 bucks, and... After about 6 months or, more usually, the first bad update... They disappear. Only to repeat the cycle a year later.I've seen this done over and over again and it really leaves a bad taste in my mouth if I'm honest. So, yes, that's problem number one: People code for cash.Problem number two: Legalities.there is, quite frankly, no enforceable legality on this forum, or really in audiogames in general. As has  been stated, most developers (me included) code as a hobby because we like to help out. Whether it's a game or some software, we do it to make a difference. If it gives us a rep as a great person, or if our name becomes known, then great, bonus! but for the most part, it's just to be helpful. Indeed, based on this we're not making any cash off of the audiogames, and even if we were it'd be probably a max of about 200 bucks. To enforce any kind of legality you need a lawyer. If you walk into a lawyers office with 200 bucks, they'll let you shake their hand, give you a cup of coffee, put their arm around you and walk you carefully out of the door again.Big company's can employ many, many developers because when they hire a developer they sign an NDA which if they break, they know they're in deep.Audiogames developers have no such facility.Problem 3: I have this new... oh. Oh he's done it now.We are a small community. As such sometimes, developer's ideas overlap. Let me give an example, about 6 months ago I was very excited to crack open the coding book and get started on a magic the gathering accessible card game adaptation. I was extremely excited to do this, right up until I saw another developer put up a new releases that they'd done it.Obviously this takes the wind out of your sails a bit. And all credit to him/her and my full respect and congratulations in that regard. I was lucky, I had other projects to fall back on (far too many projects if I'm honest). But for younger, less experienced developers that can spell the end of a career, right there.Problem 3: Respect. Now obviously there's the respect of developers, but there's also the respect of users. Too many developers develop (ha ha) a holier than thou attitude. That is wrong. The deeper you get into the knowledge of code, the further you withdraw from being a gamer. You lose that spark of what makes gaming special.I've been out of the audiogame development for about... It has to be at least a year since I released shuffle cars and the last "game" I made before that has to be trick or eat. Have I given up on audiogames development? No. Of course not. but what I have done is lost touch on what people want, and what I, as a gamer, enjoy doing. I'm not about to disrespect the community by throwing together something I don't enjoy.Problem 4: Ego.Might seem an obvious one, right/ but To be a developer, you need ego. you need enough ego to stand up and say, this. This is a good project! But you also don't want enough ego that when someone says, okay, it's good but... You end up ignoring them.I've rambled on for quite a while because this is a topic I have lots to say in if you get me started, but I want to finish off by briefly touching on video games v.s. audio games.I whole heartedly believe it is possible to make a video game styled audio game.I most certainly believe it is doable, no questions asked.Do I think anyone in this community has the experience or patience to do it? Maybe, but it's a very, very few and none under 25, that's for sure. And yes, that includes yours truly. The simple fact is video games take months, if not years to come up with. When a company makes a video game it's the *entire* company. Making an audio game that is on a level with a video game is  undoubttedly possible, but it will take time, at estimate? I'd say a year. At best!Could I do it/ Doubt it.I have the coding skill to do it, sure. But could I stay focussed enough on that one lone thing? No. I'm not interested enough. And that's the problem if you ask me.There are very few, if not none, developers in this community who are interested enough in video games who would take that length of time to reproduce such a high quality product to be on a bar with the mechanics and story of a video game.To round off I do want to disclaim something: I have not played AHC, but from what I have heard it is possible AHC is actually on a level with *some* video games. But

Re: Any way to play the VIP gameszone games for free?

Hi, so I wanted to put my two bucks worth in for the sake of it and all.Vipgamezone is an interesting case because in my mind I always think, okay you purchase a licence you have purchased for a single registration of that product for lifetime use without condition. That being said though it's interesting that if you have registered the game, you still can not play it. That rubs me the wrong way slightly. Is VipGameZone's old website available on the wayback machine? I'm actually not familiar enough with it to figure out how to use it, which is sad!Overall though I do think that the rules set up above must clearly be set out. This article sets out some interesting details on abandonwear:https://bit-tech.net/reviews/gaming/pc/abandonware-the-ethics-and-essentials/1/#:~:text=Firstly%2C%20a%20game%20can%20be,of%20Lucasarts'%20first%20graphical%20adventures.In short though:1. Pick a period where the game creator is no longer supporting or distributing the game (I suggest 5 to 10 years).2. In order to be abandonwear, the company's website must be down, (for period), the registration and licence details must not be renewable or purchaseable (for period).3. The developer can not be reached through any reasonable means *attempts up to 3 months of effort).GMA for instance would not be classed under abandonwear as their website is still available, and keys are still obtainable (go lone wolf!)This is a very, very very serious matter as while I respect the fact people want to archive games for everyone and that our community is small and classic games are no longer available, I am also extremely extremely aware that whether you like it or not, these are game works that people put a lot of hard, time and effort into it. Making that game free when it was not could cause untold damage in the long term to the confidence, desire and mood of the developer. Sure, you'd argue well if they want their stuff secure then stay supported, but I'm going to use the same argument: If you wanted the game, you should have bought it when it was available. Now, I'm not in any way saying don't archive it, I'm simply wanting to make sure that clear, clear guidelines are set out here and that the archive is painfully aware how much damage this can do to developers if a mistake is made. Archiving is good as it preserves old beauties, but it is also bad because without those old beauties, would people be motivated to make newer, supported and better games? Who knows.

Re: Let's Talk Combat

2020-09-15 Thread AudioGames . net ForumGeneral Game Discussion : dardar via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Let's Talk Combat

So from my perspective I often find complete turn based strategy completely and utterly boring. At the risk of bragging, the down side to turn based is, even with the time element, you still have plenty of time to sit back, take a drink of your tea and predict exactly what everyone can and can not do.I admit I've not played many of the rpg's mentioned in this topic, say for entombed, but one thing I always felt the audiogame community lacked was real actual engagement. take assassins creed, in that game you have to actually time yourself to avoid guards, you have to get a shot exactly lined up, and I kid you not in one mission you had to flip off of a roof, through the air, just to slice someone as you passed. Now that's not to say coding something like that is easy. Far from it I'd imagine, hell just coding a realistic fencing slash v.s block system for a sword was enough for me to sit back and go damn. I need more time than I want to dedicate to this right now.Going off of frameworks I am familiar with:tactical battle was turn based and I got so bored with it it was unreal.Time of conflict was turn based with a time elemnt, which held my interest for  a while and still sometimes does, but the fact there are a few logistics problems (no resistance within cities, no spies and you have to kill every, single, enemy unit) eventually lead to me shaking my head and walking away. Finally from the real time area I admit I did thoroughly enjoy soundRTS for the longest time. That real time element, that while you're building footman, the enemy could be building archers, that really was a thrill. Naturally the problem with soundRTS is it is still a whee bit primitive and the AI becomes predictable after so long. That in my opinion, is what no audio game or mud has yet to create, an AI that is actually, you know, intellegent.Jayde, you mention it above and a big problem I could see with playing your proposed game is I'd play it the first time, likely die, but from then on I'd just predict everything. The AI has no... Okay, this failed lets try this instead!AI in audiogames are nearly always coded with a hardcore single track mind. AI's need to be flexible, to have multiple paths they can take, that's what makes good combat.

legacy BGT games

Hello community,A while a go, like over a year at least, I slammed the door on BGT games I had developed. The long goal aim was to have these translated into python and reuploaded, perhaps with some improvements. The reason this was done was due to the BGT triggering anti-virus... thing. I can not think of a better word than, thing.Due to the BGT *thing* I personally was of the opinion that consumers, IE your good selves, would never quite be able to trust me, the developer. Over the years less trust worthy people have used BGT for nefarious deeds that range from the sublime to the damn right rude and I have always been very, very careful to ensure that 1, none of my games do this and 2, I am a developer everyone can trust.Trust was a big factor in me removing the BGT games from my website and I still maintain the fact in my mind it was the right choice to make.Recently however I have noticed that requests via email for old BGT games are not going down.At first I thought it was one of those "end of sale" rushes kind of things. People were worried they'd be gone for ever. But really, over the last year the demand for them has staid pretty constant and that is from those who want them badly enough to get in touch, rather than just saying well... that sucks, and moving on.So this is my question I present to you all:Should I return them to their own page?Games like against the clock have already been ported over, but such things as peaches and cream, deal or no deal, p's and q's, fist of fury, Nate's word hunt of doom, Boat simulator and the like have yet to be ported over to python. The original plan was to do so and remains still, however life and my explosion into the software industry rather put a firm back burner on it.So, would you like me to put them on a legacy page?If so, what measures can I employ to ensure they are safe for you and you trust the games within? My thanks in advance for your answers.

hi folks,So I've been wondering about this for a while, what are everyone's thoughts on endless v.s goal orientated?Allow me to explain:Endless: A game that continues on forever, there's no "congratulations you won" no final battle, no final boss, it just goes on... and on... And on... And on.Goal orientated: This is the opposite, a game that has achievements to get to, things to unlock and at the end a big "thing" for you to complete to beat the game. Examples of this would be q9, tank commander, shades of doom, things like that.there have been a recent uprising of new releases that are the endless kind, but not many of the goal orientated ones and I was curious what people thought of that.Is this symptomatic of lazy developers and a poor audiogame standard?Or is this a fresh market and people really like that sort of thing. Thanks a lot!

It's Cosmic Rage's fourth birthday, are you going to be there?

Birthday number 4 is today. Will you be there? It's finally here. Cosmic Rage, a MUD that from day one has been built for and around its players, reaches its fourth birthday.Every year, on the first of July, the staff of the game put on a huge celebration to commemorate a successful anniversary of change, successes and fun.In the past, we've had specialty quests, huge handouts, OOC celebrations and not forgetting, of course, last year's huge smashing of the all time peak. It was not only smashed, it was shattered into tiny pieces, trodden into the ground, and laughed at.So what about this year. What's the plan? The hosts have been extremely hush hush about the celebration plans for this year, though it has been noted that every single one of them has been seen at one point or another running from one end of the admin area to the other as they cook up something spectacular. But we always say that.Oh, it's amazing. It's one of a kind. Haven't we beaten that horse dead by now?We can't help the truth, you know. From what we do know though, or at least, what we've managed to capture from the various shouts, unlike previous years there is actually going to be an in character event of some kind and not a small one, either! There have been explosions, flames and earthquakes around the host kitchen which can only mean Billybob is preparing to do a stream of some kind. The Lara cupboard is suspiciously quiet, leading many to believe she's not only escaped, but has been sprinkling pixy dust over everything, could this be leading into an overhaul? Who knows!Eye-witness reports say they've seen huge amounts of confetti being shipped in by Amazon drones and one even claims to have seen someone cooking up a cake! You best log in, if nothing else than to keep the hosts under control. So why should I. I've played your game before, I don't play it any more. Isn't that a hint I won't be there for the birthday celebration? It could be, but it is also a chance for us to show off some of the big changes that have taken place over the last few months and tease you with the tingles of upcoming advancements.Farming: Farming went live back in April, the overhauls to it finally done and has proved to not only be a fantastic hit, but several players have named it as their favourite relaxing activity so far!Gone are the single room, boring million chicken farms and in there place is a system that features animal breeding, worker management, a farmer's market, plant growth and so much more. Not only that, I heard tell the other day of plans to, in the next year, incorporate it into the cooking system which means:Grow your own food!Have you met the newbie? Have you met our newest host, Elijah Perez?Bursting onto the scene almost four months ago, he has already made a reputation for himself as a fun loving, patient host, having held several description building classes as well as roleplay classes in cooperation with our much loved Brandon red Designation.Host side, he's also brought many pieces to the table, including a fantastic drive for the upcoming deep space exploration push in which Cosmic Rage will enter our chips into the discovery game.He does not disappoint on quality either, consistently scoring 9's and 10's in helpful assist rating and always lending a hand to help solve issues other members of the team might be having.Come say hello! We listen. Acting on feedback from the players we've simplified the Asteroid Processing activity somewhat, making it far easier but none the less fun and thrilling. We also re implemented our rewards scheme where you can receive massive rewards for recommending new people to the MUD, something it's nice to see has already been taken advantage of several times.Origin positions had some love, including automatic rerunning so you don't have to be hyper aware of what day it is.Continuing on, we also made things a lot more comfy for newbies, including cutting down teleport lists and relocate locations so they wouldn't get themselves stuck or unexpectedly killed.I can spell. No really, I can. Not only did we implement a spell checker to assist players in their description making, we also added more functionality to it including:Punctuation checking,Capitals checking,Repeated words,Force rp termsAnd more!but wait, there's even more!*reset and deletion restrictions were almost entirely lowered,*space combat received a few more clean ups to make it just that much more amazing,*more radio streams have been held of late with great success,*lots of default descriptions added for factory rooms to save you the effort if you're not the describer type*social changes: You can now follow your social with a question mark or exclamation mark to change the ending.*bioplasma harvesting got an all command for several instances.*citizen planets now greet their citizens different to others.*landing pads have way cooler ambient messages.*so much more.

Though I admit, once I got 4 cruisers and 2 battleships and starded bombarding the hell out of the coastal cities... well... Things got a bit one sided. But that's besides the point. As far as I can see, using alt y and exploration around the map I have captured all the cities on the map, but don't actually appear to have won the game?Is this a bug in the game or am I missing something. Many thanks!Commander general wannabe dardar

Hi!So I was thinking the other day which got me to wondering, are their awards for accessibility? What sort of things do developers and gamers aim for in the audiogame community? For example, over on l-works website it mentions they won the 2016 top games for accessibility. Are these still ran? What makes this sort of thing worth it?For instance I could say tomorrow alright, lets run a competition, best action game made in 3 or less months. The winner gets a special picture which says you won on it. does that make it worth it?What enspires these competitions, and who runs them? Thanks

Re: bgt games, strangest deletion of all

I think @11 goes into bgt to python on a holy complex level, and want to disagree a little bit in certain regards.Yes, so the sound support is more limiting, but by encouraging the use of specific sound formats, ogg over wav for example, are you not by and large encouraging smaller sound formats and distribution sizes and therefore a faster game?At the end of the day, as well, as long as all the user sees is my_sound=lib.sound("bob.ogg") my_sound.play() they really don't care what's under the hood most of the time.if they care that much, they'd make their own. That all being said I agree that distribution python products is a main in the tail, for if no other reason than sourcecode protection is a joke.Though things like cython are huge leaps in correcting that, I guess the aim is for to make us live in an open source universe, full of happy skipping bunnies. In regards to what you mentioned about build instructions and such, surely a simple (relatively) setup.py script would take care of this? That's how the libraries you install through pip handle it.I feel like this post has come off as a bit... Feh, but I think for the most part I'm just a bit grumpy this morning, Python to bgt is not as hard as it looks, even if you do have to put a little leg work into how you go about writing the code, but it does unfortunately require a complete rewrite.Talking about the alert function in bgt does make me wonder though, I wonder if you could achieve a bgt-like effect if you combined sound_lib, accessible_output and wx python. Seems a lot to work around, seeing as pygame could probably do a better job in a smaller size and all, but that's the sacrifice you make for trying to convert two totally different languages together just to please the masses I suppose. The point is, BGT and python are two different types of programming language, evidenced most strenuously by the fact bgt uses braces, python uses tabs.Hell, if you want something similar to BGT's ideas and concepts, go learn c++.

Re: Alter Aeon: a credit lottery started by the night people

Wow! I never new this topic would be so explosive when I clicked on it to see what it was.I was like, huh, Alter Aeon is running a lottery? that's cool I woo *gets blown backwards out the door*.Amusement aside, I wanted to contribute my own 2 credits worth to the conversation, (and that's virtual credits, not AA credits!)I come from a background on Cosmic Rage where I can empathise with Dentin in many respects, in the fact that the staff on cosmic Rage all have equal slices of the authority pie. This, often, prevents favoring, biasness, and is all around a fantastic system. this also means that each of us has the power, should a situation occur, to step in and say wo. Take five, and lets rethink about this.I must admit, right through reading all that kept circling around in my head was "communication breakdown" right up to where Dentin said it, and I just nodded to my computer screen like "yep."I think the thing is, there are good and bad points to this entire thing, and its such a shame it ended like this, if I may, I'd like to summarise and see if I understood the entire thing:*good point: This was a great idea, and for a great cause*bad: Should have waited for Dentin's go ahead, before publishing anything public at all.*good: Opinions are taken account of, and, while I skipped a couple of earlier posts, concerns about transparrency seemed to be being addressed*bad: Shadowfax's reaction may have been slightly over the top, however! He may have been acting within strict guidelines, for example: He could have, instead of removing the post, temporarily hid it with a message like: "this message has been hidden until approval from Dentin has been reached." Now, he may not have done this, because AA may not yet have the facilities for this.*good: Dentin is aware of this issue. It's always good for the Big Queso (that's big cheese), to know of problems like this, and to be able to trace them right through.*bad: Why is everyone jumping on Jayde? I feel like I'm being left out. I like Jayde and feel like I'm missing something every time I read a "lets jump down on Jayde" post. Don't like feeling left out. Sniff. If I may make a suggestion to both sides to finish up this post, I hope it will find them in good standing!1. Nocturness: In the future, perhaps make sure, when grouping with other muds or organisations or business, to get their 100 percent, signed and dotted paper okay to go ahead first, before announcing anything public and getting your fingers burnt. I can't tell you how many times I've done this, and now learned from it. Companies have various policies, rules and licences and may not be willing to grant leeway on something, but others they may. Better to ask first, rather than have to disappoint others.2. Dentin: May I suggest an internal assessment, just to ensure all the members of staf are fully up-to-date with Alter Aeon customer facing policies and guidelines, to insure misunderstandings and such like this through tone don't happen again?thanks for reading, and sorry for mangling the spelling of everyone's name other than Dentin. Y'all should have nice to spell easy names. Like Bob.

proposed solution to app store issue

Hello everyone, developers or otherwise,As you may have seen recently, Orial Gomez (sorry on the spelling buddy), put up a post regarding releasing apps on the app store, and the massive $100 a year price tag on the developer account.I imagine he is not the only developer  who is in this situation. Indeed, many a good game have probably been crushed by the blow.I have a possible proposal to put to you all, to see if anyone would indeed be interested.I believe, having done the math, that $100 a year is not out of my price range.Great, I hear you say, so go on and hand over the cash. But, at the risk of being selfish, what about myself? If I pay for me, and orial, that's $200 a year. Then how many other developers would want in?Swiftly, we climb to budgets beyond my reach, however, what if there is another way.I will be contacting apple tomorrow to see if this solution is a viable one in their terms and conditions, and if it is, here is my offer:I am proposing that I will happily set up an app store account, under a name yet to be decided, but perhaps under Games for the Blind, Audiogames4All, something that is specifically exclusive to any developer.I will foot the cost for this store.I will then open it such that any developer who wishes to publish a game, app or otherwise on the app store, and can not afford it, may apply to have it sent through this account. The reason I use the word apply, is this would be an account for quality.I would ultimately be laying down a large sum of money, and, frankly, refuse to have that wasted.Aplle willing, this would then allow developers to get their names out on the store, get their games played, and under a free  scheme.I would open it up to contribution based, $100 is not a small amount after all and if 5 developers contributed, over the year, $20 then quids in, as us british say, next year paid for.Is this a scheme the audiogames community would be willing to support?Obviously further conditions, such as what to do with commercial products may have to be a different matter, but at the moment this is a proposal.I will approach apple tomorrow and find out if this is allowable. Please let me know your thoughts.

Hi there,Self promotion ahead! If you are a roleplaying newbie, Cosmic Rage is a great place to start. We hold regular roleplay classes, as well as provide encouragement for emoting, example emoting, and more, all wrapped in an expressive, in-depth world in which newbie helpers, htpl's and hosts alike are all willing to take time to teach you how to roleplay the best way you can.Our rpHelp category is stuffed full of nuggets of information about this very topic, all with the purpose of promoting you from an rp newbie to an rp expert. We've actually done this for many people, and a lot of CR players actually say that they have found it a good environment for growth. We also have an RP OOC channel, which you can ask questions on and get advice on roleplay plotlines. The staff of the game are relaxed, so if you make an honest doosey of a mistake, they won't snatch up the ban hammer and clobber you over the head with it, instead, if it is clearly an honest mistake, they might send you a notice, and in that  there will be advice on what you could have done better.CR also contains many features to help you get into the mind of your character including the ability to set a job role, rp points, rp nominations, optional profiles, an rp reward system of points, I.E, if you roleplay, you level up, and more.Information can be found at: https://cosmicrage.earthHope to see you soon

quests in audio games

Hi there,So this question comes from a quest game nwbie, both in terms of text games and otherwise. I've always been rubbish at them.In muds and text adventures, quests usually consist of looking at the right object, examining the right noun, ETC.But how does that work in an audio game?I'm assuming most audio games have beeps and such to indicate where there is an item, or a ladder ETC.So doesn't that make it pretty obvious? What was the best audio game quest you ever did, and what made it great?

Re: Cloning games, how much?

Here's my own take on things, for what it is worth.I come from a background of not being into pokemon, and so never tried that other game, and never, tried egg hunt, huntation, or anything like that. When ever I make a piece of software, or a game, I ask myself:1. who is the target market. In this case, the blind community.2. What do they already have.Lets take, as an example, a first person shooter. What do we already have?Shades of doom comes to mind.Alright, and what is shades of doom:There are doors that you open by pressing enter, you walk around, you hear monsters, you have a navi unit. Now lets look at my game here, which we'll call... um, myprogram. So I then look at myprogram and go ok, in this concept, my character is walking around, and he's in a building, and he has a gun.Alright, what about if we made it outdoor, as well, and added walls, so you could take cover behind them.Hmm, this is looking more like a trench warfare game now, so lets introduce some enemies who have machine guns.Ah, now we're getting into RTR territory, but RTR didn't have things to take cover behind, so lets make sure we have that, and by that extension, how can we make shooting a gun more interesting.First, lets find out how you actually fire a gun, there has to be more too it than point and shoot...Long story short, as I'm developing a concept for the game, I am also serving as its biggest critic. If you're making a game, and you want success, you should implement things never done before.Your character is walking? Why?Why can't he fly, or hell, why can he walk? What if he needs to hop, or swing from tree to tree. You're shoot a gun? Why? Why not a bow and arrow.Eventually, you'll wittle down your ideas, pulling each one apart until what you're left with is still the same thing(a first person shooter), but instead includes unique aspects such that you are a ranger in a forest with a bow and arrow, defending from an invading tribe whom you must slay and then help rebuild your village by gathering... You get the point. That is what the community lacks, clear thinking unique games.Taking elements from other games is great, and I commend Oh Shit, the various SB spin offs and the various characters included cross games, but at core of the matter, the reason why games like a heroes call, and the like are so successful, is they are *completely*, new.that's what makes a good developer.HTH

Hiya,If I were in your situation, here is what I'd do:I'd make the new version with the new save file, put an ident in there. For instance:write_to_file("NewSaveFileident!"+encrypted_string())Then: if(newsavefileident in savefile==False)this is an old save file, alert the user about the conversion tool, which is not open source in any way, which they can use to change over their save file.Does that help?

To be specific, my concern is not where bob copies the get_object function from Jim's game, my concern is where James releases a game called x, and then Jim comes along, swaps out the sounds, and says its a new game.HTH

Evening all,After seeing the billion millionth topic of "Here's a new game, which isn't a new game at all its an old game by someone else that I've given a new name and swapped out the sounds for, maybe not even that." I decided to put up this opinion poll.I, personally, am quite frankly just about done with these posts, they waste gamer's time, they waste moderator's time, and they waste developer's time. They're irritating, pointless, and frankly, occurring way too often.I would like to find out if you agree, and if you do, your own personal opinions on what the punishment for such should be?I'll make it clear I'm no moderator, just a very very frustrated user of the forum. I was going to post this as a poll, but it wouldn't work so meh.I hope the moderators take note, and the users take the chance to voice their opinions.Harsher action for copy paste

Interesting that you made BGT go through port 80.You could do a fix update to get bgt to carry out an http request on another port, EG, , and then have a backend to simulate the web server. It's a little more leg work than how it was without https, but this way you get https, and don't screw over paying custoers

Re: Unpopular Opinion: Audio Game Community Edition

Hi there,So I freely admit, I read posts 1 to 9, and then skipped to the end, if I missed someone mentioning me, I'm sozzles. This post really spoke to me, on a number of levels and I wanted to express this. First, the phrase, "Don't like it? Go make one of your own." Has always amused me. because I did, and the other game suffered for it. Side note: This is why that phrase is disallowed on my online game, and any staff member using it generally gets a good old fashioned ear bashing.Anyway, where was I?All I can say is, I really really agree with post 1. I had a rather humbling experience last year I think it was? I put a post in the off topic room asking if my company had helped anyone. The general consensus was, no. The post that I remember the most went along the lines of, "Nathan Tech who?"The reason I write about this is because it put things really into perspective for me. Sure, I'd made a few games, had a website and sure a few people played it, but there was an entire *community*. A *load* of people who had never heard of me, what I was trying to do, or the vision I was trying to project. That, for me, set a new goal. A new vision. To create programs that were either unique in ther functionality, or, made otherwise difficult task very easy.I think the thing that a lot of developers struggle with these days is the what I call feedback negativity.I'm not talking about the not being able to take bad feedback, as much as talking about either of the following happening:1. Gripers post, but lovers don't.or, 2. Lovers post, and gripers don't.That seems backwards, right? But situation 1 creates a feeling of hopelessness in most people, while situation 2 creates hubris.Hubris: A feeling of god-like pride.Having gotten this far into the post, I now have forgotten what I was originally going to say. So...TLDR, I 100 percent agree with post 1, and hope that if I have broken what I consider to be almost golden rules of development, then I hope someone pulls me aside and bashes me over the head with them. Also, sorry for typos, new keyboard and all.

The games you listed, and indeed others, are ultimately fantastic games. Respective of that though, it can't be denied that for every fantastic, effort-filled game there are 3 low-effort games.@5 True, but there's a good chance a virus checker could find that

My Decision for player safety, encourage other developers to do the sa

Hello all,So I wasn't going to make a big deal of this, which is why this post comes a month after the decision was already made.As you are no doubt aware, BGT, Blastbay Games Toolkit, is a a method of making an audio game that many developers did, and some still, use.BGT has one problem. Unfortunately, due to the way it is compiled, BGT flags on 90 percent of virus checkers these days. It is true, this is easy to overcome, simply add it to your exclusions and move on. This presents an obvious risk however. What if I wanted to make a program or game that is actually a virus. Not that I would, but for arguments sake. I could publish this, say it's the next fantastic new game, but it is in BGT and as long as there's a bit of game there... you'd be none the wiser until your computer went up the creak.Due to this, I made the choice to close down the games section of my website, with immediate affect. Not only were all the games bGT, but thanks to the ease in which BGT games were doable, they were also very low quality.THIS IS NOT PERMINANT.The software section of Nathan Tech has already been overhauled, with the BGT versions taken down and replaced with higher quality versions in more flexible languages that come with 0 risk to the end user. The games section will go the same way.Already, projects are under way to release new games with more involvement for the end user in the long term.I'm not delusional, the days where Nathan Tech played a major part in the audio gaming community are long since gone, however, I want to post this for two reasons:1. To encourage the end user to not use BGT games. The risk is there, and not realising this risk is only detrimental to your own computer safety, and gaming experience. Nine times out of ten, games made in other languages are higher quality, because we, the developers, are thinking, we are putting effort in, and we are proud of our products.Developers: It's time to stop using BGT. Provide your users with high-quality games where all they have to do is install it. Make your games professional by not being at risk of being a virus. BGT is a by gone time.  users trust risk free games. Users will never be 100 percent confident with a game or product they have to add as an exception to a virus checker.Overhauling current games is not as hard as it sounds and is a great learning experience for getting to grips with a new language.Users, flex your right to high quality games, and don't use BGT.I hope this post helps people in the future.

So, usually I avoid topics like this, because I have not actually got the time to play the games themselves. From the outside, it does seem like games from this developer go up, then down. then back up? then back down. then get renamed? and go back up again, then come down.Which is actually fine.A lot of mainstream games do this, I'm not even joking. The amount of times some of the biggest games in the sighted community have gone down for a year, two years, or even three and then come back is amazing. That being said, there's one major difference: a reason. From what I've read in this topic, there's a lot of speculation on, but no real hard reason for, the game going down. That, more than anything, is why I read through the thread with this here box of popcorn, to find out exactly what went wrong.I still don't get it.@jayde I have to say, thumbs up. I admire the way you explain the reasoning behind the moderation movements and think it is something we all, me included, could take note of.Anyway, this did raise an interesting thought I realised, a question more than anything:So, if a developer makes 3 games, and puts them on a website, then takes down the website. then he makes 3 more games on a new website, and takes it down. Eventually, aren't his games just going to become lost to time without the users actually meaning them to?Just my ponderings for today, and in the words of a great man:So long, and thanks for all the fish

BGT is also not just developed by Phillip. It's a combination, from what I know, and Phillip maintains not only his various products, but an actual job as well. Needless to say, he's a busy man!

your how to guide on...

Hi there,So recently, with most game releases, I have seen a lot of things which tick me off, a lot!I thought to myself, I wonder if they do it to annoy me, or if they merely don't know it is bad form?So I wondered, would anyone like a how to guide on... Well, I guess you could call it development? It wouldn't be a "how to build a program" or anything, but would cover:How to write good readme files, version numbers, how to write attractive descriptions for your games, best things to consider,my thoughts on programming languages, why copying is bad,and anything else you suggested.I just got so sick of things like:Hi!This is my new game, it's called Bob. If you want to know about Bob, read the readme!Or this one:Hi!Here's Bobv3.0, I've only fixed a bug, but what the hell! So, please, let me know if you'd like this, or if I'd just be wasting my time. Thanks!

game suite, a replan

Hello! So originally I was planning to make a Nathan Tech gamer's suite. It is my dream one day to be spoken of the same way other audio game legends are spoken of, my two idles, of course, being Aprone and the legend Jim Kitchen.Anyway, my gamer's suite was to be a mish mash of games all roled into one, including some of the older besties, like guess the number, and monopoly, to newer, perhaps unseen games before like card games. The one thing I wanted was for it to be offline. Online card and board games have been done to death. hats off to the lads and ladies at Quentin c's and RS Games, so there's no point in me rehashing that department, but we lack offline games.So... that was the plan.that plan I realised is, a little floored, I mean for 1, who wants to play guess the number anyway? And for 2, monopoly planet has sort of wiped out my ideas on what to do there, great job to those guys if it works... No idea, I've not tested. So, yeah. Now I'm asking you guys. What would you like in a gamer's suite.Tell me, I'll make it, and then we can complain together about me. Wait... scrap that last.Either way."Hit me with your best shot!"

Re: my dream, your nightmare

@gryffindor: Thank you for explaining. I keep forgetting if I have mentioned this in a previous post or not, and so am probably repeating myself somewhat. A committee of five hosts have been formed, whose job it is is to go over the current "stock" ships, ensuring they are completely spell checked, and also adding any missing upgrades too them. To use dark's example, one job of this committee would be is to ensure the asteroid hauler actually has an anchor[though I'm pretty sure it does.]@dark Get excited, because development has begun! As I promised the players, it will be a slow intigration, allowing them the time to adjust to each change. Some changes might be two days apart, if they are most asthetics, others might be a week apart, either way, this new system has "different" and "unique" in mind. The first changes are already noticeable, in that targeting, i.e, when you type t , now shows next to it where the ship is in relation to yours, heading, such that if you target a ship and it is off of your port forward, then you turn to the left all of a sudden, the direction will now adjust such that it is starboard forward.

There never has been.@Ethin Your post makes a few inaccurate assumtions, most noteably, you think I've already not successfully found a way to do it. Re: my dream, your nightmare

A very good morning to you all.An interesting idea, @dark regarding the drones. Certainly food for thought. I've not actually played land of livia, though I keep meaning too, as it looks quite fun.Talking of upgrades on ships, I'd like to bring your attention to the message boards. In the spirit of being open and honest with our players, the host post a revised copy of the minutes of their monthly meetings upon the board. By revised, we mean any personal details, or private content, is removed, but still with what we spoke about clearly displayed. One of the items discussed in the last meeting was ships. With the spell check on planets now complete, we turn to ships. A large committee, comprising five hosts, have been elected, two of whom will go over the spelling, 3 of whom will go over upgrades and install missing upgrades on ships. Sadly, this situation was unavoidable. In a game of new features, sometimes they are bound to get missed on older models of ship. We aim to rectify that over the next week or two.We are also, to the best of my knowledge anyway, the only space mud out of the big four whom will soon have multilanguage policies. To ensure complete understanding, our policies are being translated, right now, into russian and spanish and not just by google translate, either.Regarding cargo drones I find the comments interesting. There was of course, the change last night that ensured they could go to multiple cargo bays at once, but I think what interests me is your wording "useless."The cargo drones are perhaps the singularly most unuseless item in the entire game. Without the cargo drones, you can not upgrade cargo bays period. Look at any other space mud, lets take one that uses an upgrade. You pick an upgrade and who installs that upgrade, exactly? Oh, right! A cargo drone! Every ship in any universe will require some form of cargo drone, whether it be stored on the ship, following you around like a lost puppy, or sitting in someones upgrade store. When I created cargo drones, it made sense to me that, why should players have to move all their ships to one planet, to get one cargo upgrade, when they could just lead their drone around, and install the upgrade directly from it instead?Perhaps, using my explanation above, it is not a unique system, but I like to think it is not a "useless " one, either. I'd like to see people play the game without them! Dragon racing. Of course!

You speak about wanting there to be a game/mud that could do what these other games[the ones you mentioned] can do, in term of quality or actions. That's exactly what this thread is for. Hello, everyone!Thank you again for your wonderful wonderful ideas and reviews.I can't repeat enough how much you giving me your time to do this makes me feel proud. Proud to be someone who can make a difference.Already, many features have been implemented that are turning Cosmic Rage around from the collision course it was on onto a fantastic and fiery future.I usually, and will, do this in the new releases thread, but I wanted to draw your attention to certain changes that came about because of you spectacular people.*All changes and announcements are now spell checked before they get posted*spam on twitter has been reduced*The home planets are now typo and spell check free, and others are being swift to follow*background checks have been implemented to help tackle the typo catastrophe*the website is being updated, so far with the activities page having been updated and the index page ripped out and revamped*trash collecting now has some random rewards that you can get*in chargen, the longer menus have been split, such that you now get a list of the 5 most popular, with an option to view the full list, and so reducing clutter and time*an alts curve to make it easier to level up * large bank balance transfers*better message board formats*and moreThose changes are all because of you guys,. I also have some personal notes to deliver:@dark as always, your ideas are the boss and top of my list. some inspiring ideas and you can guarantee we'll be snatching them up.space combat: We are working on a tactical space combat, as I discussed in a previous thread a while back, including line of fire, big ship sizing verses small ship speeds, ETC. To ensure absolute implementation with no hiccups though, we're taking it, very, very, slow, @nocterness:Again, some good criticisms for me to chew on and digest, so thank you for that. I must admit being more than slightly disappointed, both yours and madam nightshades names make me think of a god and goddess, and part of me was really, really looking forward to seeing if you guys were going to make a unique  and exciting fantasy mud to really shake up the place. Often, I've noticed, space muds go through phases of popularity and, I sadly, think we're in a decline again, hence I was hoping... anyway, enough about that.I hope you find your Cosmic Rage experience to be enjoyable, both of you.Again, thank you everyone, and I'll do my best to keep Cosmic Rage to an exceptional standard.
