RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with word on marriage certificate for Charles Costa (pimental) and Violet Vasconcel(l)os
Thanks Cheri and Altino for responding so quickly. I think it might be Moranha or Morenha because the second vowel looks like other middle of the word "a"s. Maybe a misspelling of Morenha as an alcunha. There are some Pereira Moranhas that are listed as arriving in Hawai'i. Maybe someone else has an idea. This side of my family, Jose da Costa (Pimental) and his wife have given me quite a headache. Thanks again, Keith -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Keith, I think it could be Moz something, only because the R looks different in Pereira. Hope someone else can chime in. Judi, thank you for sharing the information. I'm getting help with Ancestry. My grandmother went under the name Nicolina Moniz Couto, but her birth record shows Furtado born in 1891 in Nordestinho. Her father Francisco Moniz Furtado Jr.from Nordestinho, her mother Maria da Luz Franco from Mosteiros. Further back, Francisco Moniz Furtado (Couto) (Sr) from Nordestinho and Anna Jacinta Pimentel, Joao Luz Franco de Medeiros and Rosa Pacheco. Couto and Furtado appear to be one and the same person. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Nordestinho, Sao Miguel
Hello Nancy, my grandmother went under the name Nicolina Moniz Couto, born 1891 in Nordestinho. She came to New Bedford about 1907. Her birth record shows her father as Francisco Moniz Furtado Jr. (not Couto) from Nordestinho, for her mother it shows Maria da Luz (Franco) from Mosteiros, Sao Miguel. Further back, Francisco Moniz Furtado (Sr) and Anna Jacinta Pimentel, also Joao Luz Franco de Medeiros and Rosa Pacheco.Going back to her parents marriage records, it shows Couto, not Furtado.Mosteiros is on the other side of the island. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Portugues Naming Customs - Can Someone Help Me Understand?
Although chaotic, this system sometimes can be helpful. For example, if we find a girl "Maria de Sousa" daighter of Manuel Gomes and Maria Soares, we can expect that some of the grandparents were "Sousa", and very frequently we will find that one of the grandmothers was a Maria de Sousa. If we find a rare combination of a rare surname with a rare name, we can deduce that these people were relatives, linked by some common ancestor. When I researched in Sao Roque, Pico, I found many coeval Apolonia Dias Pereira, and all were cousins or close relatives - all descendants of an older Apolonia Dias Pereira. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Portugues Naming Customs - Can Someone Help Me Understand?
After Republican times, surnamings was progressively standardized, usually maternal+paternal surnames or only paternal. Sometimes theses surnames could retain two or more names. My family carries on "Simoes Lopes" for eight generations. Before 1800's there was no standard, so children could reveive any paternal, maternal or even grandparents's surnames. Sometimes religious names were added and became inherited as surnames. A man named Joao Batista da Silva after John Baptist could pass "Batista da Silva" to their children, or even use this second name as surname, originating children with Batista surname. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Da Silva family on Sao Jorge Island
Adair, This might be a cousin link somehow. I wish my grandmother had let us meet the family and maybe this would really not be as tough in trying to find info. The Cenus records have my great grandparents in the town of San Joaquin in 1920 and 1930. They have my great grandmother's name spelled wrong. They have my great grandfather and my grandfather's name as Geo Silva. My g uncle is listed as Willie Silva. Other names are spelled incorrect at that time as well. My mother Evelyn Catherine Silva was born around 1940 in the Manteca area. She tells me her grandparents lived out in Merced county, but not specifically where. They are buried outside of Escalon. Her father's birth records are from San Rafael. Her father was a topper for one of the lumber companies when she was a child. Do you have any family that worked in the lumber industry? I do know that the Silva side of our family would have an annual reunion in Gustine every summer. I never attended it though. I will go through some of my pictures and see if any have Borba for a name. I use Archives.com, so I have the records I have found attached to the person in my tree it goes to. What sites have you used to get information from Sao Jorge? I use a translator on my phone to translate for me. My husband thinks I am crazy to be searching, but I am determined to find the line. Don't try to understand it. They took any name they wanted. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Nordestinho, Sao Miguel
Hi Nancy, My Coutos are mostly from Arrifes. Those who came to the U.S. settled in New Bedford or Fall River. Do you know the full name of the grandmother who settled in New Bedford/Fall River? We probably don't have a connection, since we're talking about different sides of the island. But it's worth a try. [AZORES-Genealogy] Portugues Naming Customs - Can Someone Help Me Understand?
I've been researching the Azorean roots of a friend of mine and have been able to trace his family tree back to his grandmother, Ermelinda CORREIRO (NUNES) and, recently, to his great-grandparents, Jose' CORREIRO and Rosa de Jesus. I've just recently learned that Jose' CORREIRO and Rosa de Jesus had another daughter, Maria do Espirito Santo (FURTADO). Not understanding the Portuguese naming customs is creating some confusion for me when attempting to research the various branches of one family. Could someone help clarify how Ermelinda and Maria were named so differently even though they are sisters? Thanks! [AZORES-Genealogy] What Happened to FURTADO'S in Fall River, Massachusetts?
A few months ago, there used to be a website for FURTADO'S Chouricos and Linguica in Fall River, Massachusetts at the same street address where my friend's grandparents used to live. Now the website is gone and the closest type of website I can find for Chouricos and Lingquica in Fall River, Massachusetts is a place called MELLO'S. Does anyone know what has happened? Thanks!
