You have to be careful with this line. It intertwines quite a bit.

Just took a peak and the baptisms before year 1815 are not available.

Please read Gayle's email re CITCEM.

I will. I can not find the surname “Caixo” in the Sao Roque do Pico records in
CITCEM. Do think it was a nickname? What does it mean?

Doreen,
This record states Jose is the son of this particular couple who are naturals
of Santo Antonio's Parish.  If within the right time frame, It's likely, they
are the same couple, however just make sure you find Jose's baptism to confirm.

Doreen,

I’m reading 2 of the 3 components in agreement with CITCEM. I see Jose
Goncalves (Glz) Caixo. The database shows Coelho instead of Caixo. I’m looking
at my smartphone. Maybe someone using a larger screen can clarify this record
better for you.

Doreen,

I’m reading 2 of the 3 components in agreement with CITCEM. I see Jose
Goncalves (Glz) Caixo. The database shows Coelho instead of Caixo. I’m looking
at my smartphone. Maybe someone using a larger screen can clarify this record
better for you.

Agree with Gayle Machado's reading except for the last name Is Coixo,

I have a Jose Furtado Laurenco from Ribeira das Tainhas and died circa
1922. He was married to Maria da Gloria Resendes who died circa 1918 and
he subsequently remarried to an unknown woman almost immediately and died
shortly thereafter. Most of this information is from the recollection of
his grandson. This could very well be a relative. I'll have to remind the
grandson, who is in his seventies, to see if he can find his birth
certificate to determine if correctly remembers the name of his grandfather
just to double check. I've asked before but it fell by the wayside as we
don't see each other too often.

I'll make a note of this.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Researching in São Miguel

2018-07-14 Thread Rosemarie Capodicci
Gloria, Gayle is right about prior to 1922 all of the family under 18
(usually) became citizens along with DAD. When you say you have all his
Nat. papers, was it after 1906 and if so did you ask for his Declaratioin
of Intention? That is the paper (after 1906 when the Feds took over) that
will have the most info not just his Naturalization paper.

Gloria,

I’m a little late to this thread , so forgive me if my comment has already been
made. But, I noticed your comment about your grandparents’ naturalized. If your
grandfather naturalized before 1922, his wife and children also became citizens
without additional paperwork.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Joao Moreira from Sao Miguel island, late 1800s

2018-07-14 Thread Cheri Mello
I would say Maia. The document was probably misread.

Go to Tombo.pt (click on the British flag if you need to navigate in
English). Scroll down the left column to Azores/Açores, then Sao Miguel
island, then Ribeira Grande, then Maia. Go to 1868 and start looking for
your ancestor born to those parents. You may need to broaden your search to
a year or 2 before or a year or 2 after.

If you don't read Portuguese, there's a guide on the Azores Genweb to help
you bumble your way through. When I get back to my computer, I will provide
the link. Or maybe someone will beat me to it.

I have found an immigration document showing John Moreira retuning through
Boston from St Michaels,in this document his birth place is listed as Maid. He
is listing Rhode Island as home and this fits my other records

His birthday is about 1868 and parents are listed on his last child’s birth
certificate as violante A. And Joao Moreira.

Is Maid, Maia? What would I do next to see if I can find more info?

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Researching in São Miguel

2018-07-14 Thread Cheri Mello
Gloria T,
The link I provided explains the naturalization process with both 1st & 2nd
papers. You have already written and received from the USCIS the FULL
naturalization packet?

Mosteiros is a different freguesia than Ginetes. Just like Las Vegas is a
different city than Reno. You are going to have to decide if she is from
Ginetes as Elaine found on the passenger list or Mosteiros that you found
on the marriage in America. On the marriage in America, the bride and groom
are providing the info. Sao Jose is a church in the city of Ponta Delgada.
I'm staying not to far from it and walk by it everyday.

The link that I provided also explains how to bumble your way through the
records and provides key phrases. We are have a conference in June of 2019
(next year) where we will teach how to work Tombo.pt and "read" the
records. You should go. You would learn a lot and have fun with us.

Also on the link I provided is a list of researchers for hire if you don't
want to do it yourself. None of them would be able to "finish" your tree in
a month however. They are probably working with other clients and would get
to you in the order that they serve their clients.

Gloria,

Dates and places can be very misleading when doing research.
Here is what the US Census and City directories show for Maria / Mary Antone
and their family.

1920 New Bedford b 1897 immigrated 1909
1930 Passaic, NJ b 1898 Immigrated 1912 ( Yes this is them )
1940 New Bedford b 1898
1949 Fairhaven ( Still working at K Mills ) Living at 29 Alpine St

Death Cert 1950 d Merced CAb Nov 1, 1898

These are for her family as they all list the children also, but as you can see,
birth years and immigration years can change.

I did not find any intention to become a citizen or naturalization record as
this would tell her birth town in the Azores.
And I did not find her on any passenger list

Hope this helps

You need to do more research in the U.S. (I assume) before jumping over to
Europe. No, the archive has no type of island index. Everything in Europe
(including Portugal and the Azores) is organized on the village level. You will
find multiple Marias in all 70 churches on Sao Miguel. The records for 1899 are
online at tombo.pt/en

You need Maria's birthplace and most likely her parents' names. For a list of
ideas of where to start, try this: https://goo.gl/dGG4Ar

You really need census work to see if you can figure out her immigration year.
From that, you might be able to use the Passaportes LEAVING the Azores.
However, the port of Ponta Delgada has missing records. So you may still need
to use the other sources that I posted in the URL above.

Good luck,
Cheri
