Lorraine,

If your dad was here for the WWI Draft Registration or WWII Draft Registration
and his name was changed by then, try using that for proving his name change.
Also, what about his U. S. citizenship records? Most of the name changes were
probably not legally changed.

2014-06-20 Thread elaine sharp
Thank you, Cheri. Well I spent several days and nights researching this record
from 1864 (which would have made her 16) to 1840 (which would have made her 40
years old) and I did not find a record for her and I am about cross-eyed now.
Why is there no record?? I have no idea so I will try another posting and see
if someone might recognize her parents. As far as I know she only had this one
child. I guess it is possible there were others but I am mainly interested in
the one whose records I do have.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] How would one pronounce Bixaxe in Portuguese

2014-06-11 Thread elaine sharp
Thank you all who responded. I checked the marriage records for the island
in Croatia which are online at familysearch (easy to read.all you have to
look for is "interragato" and the name of the groom and his father and bride
and her father follow) and I am pretty sure the Croatian spelling is
Baicich so I deduce the X must be the sh sound in Portuguese at that time. I
spent the last 2 days searching from the time my 4th great grandfather was
20 until he married in Portugal in 1805, I am going to check the records
from the time he was 17 just to be sure , and no luck but I did find other
family records in the process so that was a plus. The Portuguese marriage
record said she died in Trieste, Italy, but I thought they might have
married where he and I believe she were born. I have not learned how to
maneuver the Trieste records to find her death record - not sure if they are
online and, of course, do not know the church. Working on this. The little
island the family came from has gone back and forth between Italy and
Croatia and after WWII it was returned to Croatia.

There is a Military Museum, I think it is Museu Nacional Militar, in Lisbon

will need to check where you can catch them.

Go all the way around one time to see where everything is. Then go around
again and get on and off to see those things you want to take in. If memory
serves me correctly, they have a ticket that is good for a 24 hr. period.
We took it about 1 in the afternoon so that was still good till 1 in the
afternoon the next day. We also walked all over Lisbon; sometimes it seemed
like one end to the other for hours, we also took taxi's to get to the
churches my ancestors were baptized; married in and homes they lived in..
Luckily, I still have many cousins still living in Lisbon and they took us
to many other sites in/around Lisbon and the beautiful coastline.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Working like my ancestors?

2013-10-15 Thread elaine sharp
This weekend we spent with our daughter and family and my son in law has as
a hobby a small vineyard. We spent the weekend helping to harvest the
grapes. I was very proud of my 80 year old husband in this effort. We
helped cut them off the vines and he even let us stomp a few to see what it
was like to do this. Lots of fun and a mess!! I told him I guess this is
what some of my ancestors may have done way back when and he told me his
kids will be able to tell their kids the same thing about us.

I am not sure what the up to date procedure is to stomping as we had to
leave; however, as I said before, it was lots of work and lots of fun. I do
know he did say something about a wine press in a couple/few weeks??? Maybe
I will go back after he bottles them to partake of the fruit of my labor.

***UPDATE***

Heres some information I gathered from my grandma.

My great-grandparents were Manuel Martins & Maria Evangelina Martins. Manuel
died around 1953 or so and Maria died before than. Manuel re-married and had
one child.

The children of Manuel Martins & Maria Evangelina:

Odete Martins-Not sure if she is still alive

Fernanda Martins-Resendes(Not sure if this is the correct last name). Has 3
daughters probably living in California. Names are Teresa, Paula &
Esmeralda. Joao Resendes is the dad. Again not sure if Resendes was the last
name

Jose Martins-Died

Mariano Martins-Died but his wife and children came to Massachusetts also
and had one son working with MCI(a telephone company) and he got in contact
with the family ages ago.

Norberto Martins-probably alive

>From the second marriage:

Julio Martins-probably still alive.

On a side note. My grandfather had a cousin living here in Massachusetts
that was Fillipino his name was Verba Martins and he had a daugther named
Maria Martins

Everyone hailed from Sao Jose-Ponta Delgada.

Again all this information was what my grandmother gave me today. Thank you
again for the help.

Thank you all for your suggestions and I am working on them. I did have my
husband install my printer to my mini and I was able to print it out from
there. But I still want to figure out how to do this on my laptop. I am
thinking of updating my laptop to from XP to Windows 7 and Microsoft 10,
has anyone done this? I think I can do this online. If so, any problems
doing this?

Thank you.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] FTDNA matches

2012-09-13 Thread Elaine Sharp
Cheri,

Thanks for the reply. In checking the results, it lists in the 2nd column
Y-DNA 12 but I was under the impression she had ordered 37 so I am not sure
if anymore matches from her dad will be forthcoming although she states
there are more coming? She did send to me and 2 others we connect to (she
is more DNA knowledgeable than I) - "286 tests listed for our family name,
only three have result 15 for marker DYS392" - I have no idea what she is
talking about. We did a 37 marker and the other McNeal person we matched so
closely did a 67 marker. I have worked with this person on the McNeal
genealogy recently and we believe there were 3 or 4 brothers. We can
identify 3 brothers, John, James and Henry. My husband is from James, the
person with the 67 markers is from John and this new one is from Henry. It
looks very promising that our research is correct. I did send her an email
to clarify how many markers she ordered. We are waiting for the next sale
to upgrade ours to a 67. It has taken me 10 years to identify which McNeal
family my husband came from and a lot of it was hunches we have proved
correct...Wm. McNeal served in the same CSA company as our William McNeal
Jr.'s mother's father. They came from the same area. A couple of census
records for Jr. and his mother, a letter my mother in law wrote about the
little she knew about her father's family. And a few other bits and
pieces. It was not helpful when our Jr's. marriage record said "the man has
no father." written by the bride's father.

I still try to understand DNA but do not get into it too much as my aging
brain cannot absorb it all.

Here are a couple of sites I have used in the past for help in translating

looking for it. I used it years ago to help me with translations. I did
take a Portuguese language class a few years ago. I only took one session
and it is evident I should have taken 3 or 4 more :-( but it was quite a

[AZORES-Genealogy] DNA Match in 12/25/37 same person

2011-09-01 Thread Elaine Sharp
This is not a Portuguese family member but a family member did a DNA study -
37. He matched another person same surname (first time this has happened on
any DNA study we have done so far...same surname match.he matches as
follows12 - 1 exact match, 25 - 1 exact match, 37 - Genetic Distance 1,
this being the same person in each case. What are the chances that this is
a close member of the family? I am hoping you are going to say pretty good.
He matched several others...25 - 40 Genetic distance 2, 37 - 11 Genetic
distance 4. I did email him and hope he will reply as he seems to be from
the same area as our family member came from. Family is from
Scotland/Ireland.

Needs some encouragement from the experts...since I will never understand
this "stuff."

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: JOSEPH DUARTS OR DUARTE DOB 1885 AND WIFE MARY DOB 1891

2011-07-25 Thread Elaine Sharp
OK. I believe I have found them in the 1920 lived on Moss Landing Road,
Washington, Alameda Co. CA and 1930 lived on Oakland-San Jose Hwy.
Washington, Alameda County CA They both say Joseph was born in California
and Mary in Massachusetts. Children listed are Alfred, Adeline, Joseph,
Leonard, Florence, Harry, Lorraine. Still trying to find them in the 1910
census. According to census they were married ca 1908.

Here are some birth records: mmn means mother's maiden name and on all of
these it is Mattos b. in Alameda Co. So far haven't found Leonard's birth
record.

Alfred b. 10//6/1908
Evelyn b. 10/1/1910 (could this be Adeline?)
Joe b. 4/19/ 1914
Florence mmn spelled Maltoes b. 10/8/1918
Harold R. b. 1/29/1924
Marie b. 2/8/1927 (Lorraine?)
Marie Annjessie b. 5/26/1930

Will keep searching. You might want to order a birth record for Alfred or
Evelyn. Others on this list more familiar with Alameda Co. records can help
guide you on this.

writes it as ReGuego Grade. Born March 9, 1895.

I think this is your man.

Americo C. Chrispim(sp) 13, sailed on the Romanic from St. Michael
10/14/1908 arriving Boston Oct. 20, 1908, leaving his grandfather Casimiro
G. Chrispim, Reguengo, Portugal (so now you have his grandfather's name)
going to New Bedford MA. He is going to his father Antonio C. Chrispim, 66
Howland St., NB, he has a scar on his upper lip and forehead. Where he is
born in difficult to read. If you would like I can also send you this to
your personal email addy.

His father Antonio C. Crespim 36, sailing on Canopic from St. Michael, Jan
3, 1906, going to a friend Manuel Machado Silveira, 33 Jenndy(Jenny?) Lund
St. NB, it lists his last residence as Lisbon. This manifest does not give
who he is leaving.

My family comes from and still lives in Lisbon, I can ask them if they know
where this place is.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Catholic or Jewish Roots?

Lisa,

Just go to the Archives of this list and search Sephardic Jews and I think
it will answer your questions. Also, google Azores Sephardic Jews. I
believe there are many of us on this list who are also Catholic and more
than likely have Sephardic Jewish ancestry somewhere. Proving it is another
matter. A good book is The Cross and the Pear Tree - A Sephardic Journey by
Victor Perera (this is the correct spelling - no i). Although some people,
I think question some of his writings, it is a good start.

Hope this helps.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ellis Island records

2011-01-20 Thread Elaine Sharp
Bruce,

I don't what you have for them on census records. Thus far, I found them on
the 1920 census living a 92 Norman Street, Fall River. John Tavares 49 came
to US 1897, b Portugal, parents b. Portugal Fireman/Bleachery, Wife, Mary 36
b. Bermuda parents b. Portugal, Mary 17, Minnie 15, Manuel 13, Annie 11,
Alfred 8, John 2 all b. MA. Joao Pedro Tavares and Maria Izabel Pereira
were married in 1899 in Fall River record 488/199. If you do not have this
record, someone on the list can provide it, I believe, or I can get it from
a friend. Let me know if you have/want this or not.

As suspected there are several Joao Tavares on ship's manifest. Also, ca
1897 sometimes there is not too much info on the manifest but I will keep
working on this. Let me know if you any/all census records..1900, 1910,
1920, 1930 are the US ones available.

Like you, my siblings and I were very troubled when we found out our brother
and sister only had a marker on their graves and we purchased proper
gravestones with cherished sister and loving brother and their names
inscribed on them so I can relate to how you felt. We even had to pay the
back burial costs, as my parents apparently could not afford to bury my
brother at the time (1920's), before they let us put the stone in. This was
ca 2004.

can do genealogy "on the web.through Google docs. It was a real good

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Azores DNA project matches

2010-01-30 Thread Elaine Sharp
Hi Cheri,

Thanks for the Azores DNA breakdown. I still have difficulty understanding
these things but that you had 3 that matched and they were cousins means the
system works. Since the 67 marker is a bit more expensive I don't think too
many people are in this category?

I asked question this because I have a family member, predicted haplogroup
is R1b1b2 of German-Volga descent and so far he has had 9 12-marker matches
and 25 25-marker matches and within both groups most are
English/Irish/Scottish, not German or Russian. Since his gfather was not
named on birth record, I am beginning to assume he was a foreigner passing
by although there were a few other nationalities living in the German-Volga
area of Russia I am told. He was the only child of this union. We have
traced his mother's father and they left Germany 1766 for Russia under the
invitation of Catherine the Great and this relative's grandmother and father
left Russia in early 1900's for the USA.

There is one Cabral in the bunch and it does list 1 Portuguese.
Interesting.

Thank you, Carlos, for the translation. It is difficult to read the writing

believe it means the person had no mother i.e. the mother was deceased.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: VIERA FAMILY in New Bedford, Massachusetts

2009-06-21 Thread Elaine Sharp
Carmen,

I believe the ones Michelle and I have found are the correct ones. You
will note she is Maria Gloria Vieira on manifest. Shandrie is a nickname
for Alexandrie. I think you need to update your webpage as you now have
lots more to add to it. You have Luiz's parents wrong as noted on previous
email of Passportes from Sao Miguel. Do you have a genealogy program? I
use Family Tree Maker but you can download a free one from
www.familysearch.org site These programs
are the easiest way to keep track of the relatives and on mine I also enter
the obit information in the notes feature. I will try and find Manuel and
Adeline's manifest record for you later today. If you are on Ancestry, you
can also access the NY records, it is under Maria De Gloria Vieira, but I
sent it to you from Ancestry. There are other Vieira's on the ship, a
couple of Manuel's but I am not sure they are the right ones as I don't see
an Adeline-what is their child's name and I hope it isn't Maria. Since the
first group came to an uncle, I have a feeling Manuel might have come after
April 1903 but before July 1904 when the parents came.

Sorry to send in bits and pieces but I am recuperating from an operation and
can only sit for so long and some of the research takes quite a while to
find as Ancestry is not known for having exact spellings of Portugues names.

I want to thank everyone for their help on this. With your input, I managed
to fill in quite a few blanks and find the exact date of death for Manuel
Duarte Mello, Sr. on Ancestry using the NB directories. I managed to find
the death of Francisca within a 2 year span and have ordered their obits
from the New Bedford Library and also requested a couple of the children's
birth records. If this does not give me an exact place in Sao Miguel, I
will then try to get their marriage application from NB Vitals. Still
scratching my head as to why they changed their surname from Duarte to Mello
ca 1920?

Thank you all so much for your help and I will keep you posted.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Book Shepardic Jews

2008-12-27 Thread Elaine Sharp
Because of my interest in genealogy, I received a book for Christmas I had
not seen before. It is not a new book and if anyone else is interested in
reading it - it is listed on www.addall.com with
prices ranging from $1.66 plus shipping. The book is called "The Grandees"
America's Shepardic Elite by Stephen Birmingham. It has quite a few
Portuguese names in it, among them Mendes, Cardozo, da`Silva, da Costa, de
Fonseca, Pacheco, etc.. It states on the book cover "back in medieval Spain
and Portugal, to which they trace their origins, the Sephardic Jews
considered themselves the elite, "the nobility of Jewry. They still do."
Has anyone on the list read this book?

I have not read it yet but intend to do so soon. It even mentions the Dutch
in New York from which my husband descends. Thought I would pass this along
to anyone else interested.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Library records

2008-12-04 Thread Elaine Sharp
Here I am in Salt Lake City at the Library and having a great time. So much
to research, so little time. I have found several of my family records and
have much more to go. Unfortunately, the library is only going to be open
tomorrow from 8-11 am as they are having a funeral for a church member. But
I planned some shopping time so will do it then. I did not look up any
Azores records as I would have to go through every island, every church to
find my grandmother's records - obviously, I do not know where she was born.
I am having success with my family from the Lisbon/Faro areas. Also, found
out exactly where in Ireland my son in law's family came from so plan to
visit there on our Europe/Azores trip in April/May.

Love our hotel, right next door to the Library, plus they pick you up and
take you back to the airport so we did not have to rent a car. Weather here
has, thus far, been great and the Christmas lights at the Square are
unbelievable. Tonite we went to listen to the choir practice, very
impressive.

[AZORES-Genealogy] SATA from Sao Miguel to Lisbon and Sao Miguel Hotel Thank You

2008-11-24 Thread Elaine Sharp
Thank you all for your hotel suggestions. You always come through. I have
made a reservation and we are on a wait list for a Hotel Avenida
cancellation. My next question: I had planned to stay in Sao Miguel until
May 12, BUT, when I look at the air schedule for SATA that day, there is
only one flight that leaves Ponta Delgada at 21.24 and arrives in Lisbon at
.30 just after midnight and this is just not an option for us. I notice
that May 11 had many more flights. Is anyone familiar with the SATA
schedule? Is there only one flight on May 12 to Lisbon? If this is the
case, then I will have to cut my time in Sao Miguel short and leave for
Lisbon on May 11 on the late afternoon flight in which case I have to change
my hotel reservation :-(.

This trip is proving to be more difficult than I thought.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: SLC Family History Library

I emailed the Family History Library in SLC and gave them the dates I will
be there and they replied that they are ordering the VAULT films I requested
and told me where they will be located so they will be available to me when
I arrive. This was a great hint for me -if I would have waited until I got
there, chances are I would have left before the films arrived.

In the 1920 census on 105 Fourth St., there is the following:

Guimal wife 20

George son 1 4/2

MARY ROSE 60 came to US 1911 b. Portugal

Roseta Pacheo (could be Pacheco??) dau. 18 b.Portugal came to US 1911.

Do you think that maybe Mary Rose never married the father of these other
children?

In the 1920 census at 65 Gore Street there is the following:

Joaquim Almida (sp) 22

Wife Ceciltina 23 came to US 1907 b. Portugal

In the 1923 Cambridge directory there is the following:

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Salt Lake City records vs. Azores Archives records

2008-08-27 Thread Elaine Sharp
Thanks, Cheri. Well, my Victor family genealogy started in Italy and
mainland Portugal and doesn't start in the Azores until late 1860's, when
their first child I have a record of was born in Calheta, Sao Jorge to
1898-99 when they came to the US, although one brother remained in Faial
according to a 1936 US obit. So not a very long genealogy there. I am
still trying to find my grandmother's baptism record but I do not know where
she was born or baptized. US records say Terceira, Sao Miguel and Rio de
Janeiro (which I rather doubt). Her siblings were born in Terceira, Faial,
Sao Jorge, and the adopted sister said she was born in Flores, but I think
the Pedro family who adopted her lived in Flores. One sister was sent to an
orphanage in Sao Miguel and I have been in contact with her descendants and
we still have not found her baptism record either. This sister returned to
Sao Miguel before her death looking for the records and did not find them
either so I don't feel too bad. She did get the orphanage records.

So I guess I would have to look at all the Archives in the Azores? That is
why I was wondering if I might be better off in Salt Lake looking for birth,
death records, but if they only go to 1880's, that won't do me any good
either. And since I don't speak the Portuguese language, don't know how
much I can get done in these Archives, but I can read the records as I
usually look for the fairly unusual surname somewhere in the document.

I am trying to plan a trip to the Azores going to the 3? Archives although I
would like to visit as many islands as possible and stay only 1 day on the
ones that do not have an Archive. My new found cousin who lives about 1 1/2
hours from me, born in Terceira, visits each year with her family
that still lives there, of course, that I have never met them. We share
same grandfather, different grandmothers.

Sometimes I just get a little frustrated not finding this one record that I
promised my mom I would find. This grandmother died when my mom was only 11
years old. You would think having a circus and high wire act over there
there would be something, somewhere in old papers? I don't even know where
my great-grandparents died over there - family history says they died while
performing and I can only guess it was ca 1891 when the last sister was born
and the other sister was sent to the orphanage. My mother always thought her
mother's surname was Machado when it was really Victor, so I can only assume
the other siblings were taken in by a Machado family after the parents died.

I am going to contact a recommended travel agent and see if I can work
something out.

Thanks (not so frustrated).
Elaine
