I had the incorrect record actually. My bad translation skills. I think the only connection Lillian and I could find was through the DeMello family which makes sense if Lillian does not share DNA with my Aunt so it has to be on my maternal line. With all the information JR posted on the Furtado Lawrence family(s) I need to find out what town in the Azores Antonio Furtado lawrence of Plymouth was born or lived in first, then look for the connection. My great grandmother told my mother that this Lawrence family were cousins when she was growing up and my mothers paternal Furtado family is from Vila Franca and other places but not Ribeira das Tainhas. The maternal line is from Ponta Delgada. I wonder if this Furtado family possibly descends from Andre Costa Furtado born 10 Sep 1701 in Vila Franca? Thanks. Keep me updated. I'll contact Lillian again soon. I remember we could not find the connection through the Furtado line though. Lillian and I are related on both sides of our families so we share a lot of DNA. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Antone F. Lawrence of Sao Miguel Azores
So it was Ribeira das Tainhas. I have been trying to link up all the old cousins my great grandparents said were family and everyone drifted apart to today where I have cousins that I did not know were cousins. Thanks for all of this. If anyone has any extra info please let me know. I'll try to expand Francisco Furtado Lourenco's line. When did the Lourenco surname come in? [AZORES-Genealogy] Teves Family in Plymouth
I was talking with friend an old friend of our family in a nursing home about her ancestry and I am sure she is a cousin through my Teves family from São Jose, Ponta Delgada. We never knew we were related. I am trying to find the connecting ancestor in her family to mine. Her ancestors were: Marion Teves lived at 323 Prince Street in Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States in 1932. His wife is listed as Maria Louisa Teves. They had a child Maria Carmen Teves, born 23 Sep 1894; died Aug 1976. (My mother would visit the family at Prince street when she was a young girl) I think that Marion Marion Teves must be a child of my third great grandfather Jacinto De Teves (more information below) but so far I have not turned up anything on the CCA site yet. I do not know if anyone else has these families in their ancestry or can help. Jacinto De Teves, Birth: 7 Dec 1802 São Jose, Ponta Delgada, São Miguel Island, Azores, Portugal Married to: Ana Cândida (De Jesus Souza), Born 28 Oct 1811 São Jose, Ponta Delgada, São Miguel Island, Azores, Portugal. I have 2 children by them: Maria De Jesús Augusta Teves, Birth 13 Jun 1850 São Jose, Ponta Delgada, São Miguel Island, Azores, Portugal Jacinta De Jesus Teves Birth 1860, married Francisco Jacinto Any help would be appreciated. If more information is needed let me know. I am trying to get this family to take the Family Finder test while it is on sale. [AZORES-Genealogy] Marian & Maria Teves, Plymouth MA
Does anyone have this couple in their ancestry? They are from the Azores but lived in Massachusetts. Marian Teves, residence in 1932 was Plymouth, Massachusetts. Wife was Maria (Louisa?) Teves. They had a daughter Maria Carmen Teves who I think was born 1909 and died in 1976, she married Augusta Furtado possible b. 1892, d. 1973, Plymouth MA. I do not have any other information. I just had a conversation with an old relative who I did not know was a Teves so I am guessing she has to be descended from my Teves family, all from Sao Jose, São Miguel, Azores that lived in Plymouth and were descendants of Jacinto De Teves b 1802 and his wife Ana Cândida De Jesus Souza. All I have for records for José Botelho is his marriage record: On 6 April 1874, in São José, Ponta Delgada, São Miguel Island, José Botelho, 32, single, seaman, legitimate son of João Botelho and Jacinta Cândida, married to Maria Augusta, 23, single, seamstress, legitimate daughter of Jacinto de Teves and Ana de Jesus, both native of São José, Ponta Delgada, where they live in Rua deSanta Clara. Witnesses were Jacinto Inácio de Medeiros, who works in a grocery store, married, and Francisco de Teves, single, seaman, both living in the same street. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Lourenço Antonio Bonito Viera married to Ana Julia Linhares
I am going to start to look for all the siblings of Luis in Ribeira Quente. I figure start looking 2 years above and below 1856. It looks like the Viera surname came from the maternal side, not the paternal like I originally thought. I just want to make sure as I always thought the Viera surname was paternal. Out of the two that Cherri found it would seem like *Lourenco Antonio, son of Jose Antonio de Medeiros and Anna Francisca married Anna Julia, daughter of Joao Vieira and Angelica Maria on 10 Jan 1839* would be the correct family because of the matching Ana Julia and the Viera surname must of came through that lineage. Let me know what you think. Thanks for all the information and help. Thanks Sandra! I do like trying to translate these records these and I am trying a new tactic with two monitors and an ever growing list of common Portuguese words and their meaning. I have tried to tried to translate the record you mentioned and this is how bad I butchered it: *20 7 in September in thousand 8 hundred 70 Ponta Delgada dioceses? Of Manuel Correia De jesus what know the come all the* *Impediment?* *Not married* *Husband or wife was 20?* *Lawful * *Fransica Carreiro natural of Jesus* *Rabo de pexia Julia de jesus natural * *Not married legitimate daughter of Joao Correia and ? De jesus* How bad did I do? There were a lot of words I could not make out at all or find the meaning to. Now that my work has slowed a bit I have more time to devote to trying to learn more. I see your Maria de Jesús Augusta Teves, born 13 June 1850 but São José, Ponta Delgada is not listed (it came through blank so you might want to reupload your Gedcom). It also says she is the daughter of unknown unknown but goes back several generations. I'm guessing when you did your Gedcom export you made some details private, so this every other generation of unknown is really sitting there in your tree. As for the list of records, I'm not sure what you want anyone to say. You didn't say that the first record is for Maria, daughter of so-and-so. If you can help clarify, I'm sure people can help you. [AZORES-Genealogy] Records for Jacinta Teves 1860
Hello I am very new to reading these records so I might need a few tries at this. The writing on some of these is really hard to read. Others not so bad. I am looking for Jacintha Teves birth record born around 1860. Later on she would marry a Francisco Jacinto but I do not know the year or the village. Maybe São José, Ponta Delgada also. Parents are: Jacinto de Teves born 1802 Ana Cândida De Jesus Souza Born 1811. I believe these two immigrated to Hawaii but that is another story... I think Jacintha Teves is my great aunt and sister to my great grandmother Maria de Jesús Augusta Teves, Birth 13 June 1850 in São José, Ponta Delgada because my mother was told that they were related back in the Azores and I am looking for the connection. Francisco Jacinto is my great, great grandmothers godfather. Do I have the correct records: http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PD-SAOJOSE-B-1860-1864/SMG-PD-SAOJOSE-B-1860-1864_item1/P27.html http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PD-SAOJOSE-B-1860-1864/SMG-PD-SAOJOSE-B-1860-1864_item1/P25.html http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PD-SAOJOSE-B-1860-1864/SMG-PD-SAOJOSE-B-1860-1864_item1/P29.html http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PD-SAOJOSE-B-1860-1864/SMG-PD-SAOJOSE-B-1860-1864_item1/P36.html http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PD-SAOJOSE-B-1860-1864/SMG-PD-SAOJOSE-B-1860-1864_item1/P37.html Are any of these correct? Allen On Thursday, June 21, 2012 1:32:54 AM UTC-4, Cheri Mello wrote: Here's some screen shots from their Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs): http://goo.gl/Rhrvw There's the Home page, the Matches page, and the Population Finder page. The FAMILY FINDER HOME PAGE that you see in the link above is just a home page. The MATCHES page: You'll see that the first match on this page is Mark Doe. IF this were a real person on your page, you could click on his name to get a little bit more info that he filled out on his profile. Email, location, research interests, haplogroups (if tested Y or mtDNA), etc. Under his name you see an envelope which is another way to email Mark Doe. The orange icon says TiP. That's an acronym for Time Prediction. It's the Time Predictor Calculator (a real statistical thing) for those who have taken the Y-DNA test and want gory detail on the Time to the Most Recent Common Ancestor (TMRCA) is. Or sometimes you see MRCA for Most Recent Common Ancestor. The 3rd button is green with a check. It was a notepad with a pencil but this one has a note on it. If you matched Mark Doe, you may have put a note that says Common ancestors are Manuel Silva and Maria Furtada, or whatever note you want to make about the person. The blue button under Mark's name lets you know his Gedcom has been uploaded. THIS IS CRUCIAL FOR FAMILY FINDER PARTICIPANTS! Click on the button and start exploring Mark's family tree. After the buttons, you see Y-DNA 111 FMS. Mark has also tested his Y-DNA up to the 111 marker level. He also took the Full MitochondrialDNA Sequence (FMS) test. The next section has headings. Match date: The date that your match appeared. Relationship range: A suggested range that the geneticists thinks your DNA falls into. Suggested relationship: What they really think the relationship is. Shared cM: Total shared centoMorgans. A centoMorgan is a unit of measure, like an inch or a centimeter, but something microscopic. The total helps the geneticists with the relationship range and the suggested relationship. Longest block: The longest block you and Mark Doe have in common. This too helps the geneticists with the range and suggested relationshp. The screen default is sorted by this field. You can click on the top of any heading to sort by that heading. If it's backwards, click it again and it will reverse sorting directions. Known Relationship: Once you figure out this is your 1st cousin, aunt, wwhatever, click the button and chose the relationship. The other person has to accept the relationship too. Known Genealogy: Ancestral Surnames: Here's the CRUCIAL PART. You can upload your Gedcom and FTDNA will compare your surnames to your matches and the bolded ones on top will be your common names (not shown here). Or you can go crazy typing them all in by hand. A lot of people do neither. As soon as someone orders a DNA kit through the Azores project, the welcome letter goes out that suggests you get your Gedcom in order. The Gedcom can be uploaded before your results come in. I recommend this. That way, when your results do come in, your common surnames will be bolded and on top (unlike the screen shot shown in the URL above). Now, if your match is Judy Thompson, and Judy has NOT uploaded her Gedcom, you may just skip over her looking for some other Portuguese name. Thompson isn't Portuguese, but her maiden name is. You would not know that by looking at the name Judy Thompson. Unless you remember her posting here. It's pretty time consuming (and I'm pretty behind), but I try to email people and tell them who their Portuguese matches are. You can tell instantly if you upload your Gedcom. And Judy has uploaded her Gedcom (although there seems to be a glitch on the FTDNA side - I reported it) so when her results come in, you'll see which surnames you match her on (sorry for using you as an example, Judy)! FAMILY FINDER - POPULATION FINDER page: This is the 3rd screen shot in the URL provided above. It shows you your ethnic percentages and a map where the poppulation geneticists think you came from. This is in beta. Only 4 western European populations have been tested: French, Basque, Spain, and Sicily (I think). At the genealogy Jamboree a couple of weeks ago, Bennett Greenspan, founder and CEO of FTDNA said the Population Finder is undergoing revision. I think I'll learn more at the DNA conference in November. FAMILY FINDER - CHROMOSOME BROWSER (not shown, but attached as a file). I've attached my dad's Chromosome Browser. I chose to display his match to Shirley Allegre (in orange) and Altino Demelo (in blue). You can see where my dad and 4th cousin

There is a George Jesse in that picture, I wonder if this is the same Jesse family I remember growing up in North Plymouth. George had a wife Maryann. It was said that my grandfather Joesph Furtado and George Jesse were cousins from a family connection back in the Azores but I do not have access to and cannot read the records in the Azores to see how. Do people on this forum have access to those records? He is not into computers and I don't live in Plymouth anymore so I don't get to see him at all so most of what he told me about Frank and his wing of the Jesse family was verbal and in my memory. My mother's sisters have recently provided us with verbal recordings (tapes) of their early family history which I have not fully processed yet. They were all very fiercly proud hard workers, middle income, which was quite an accomplishment in the early 20th century for Portuguese immigrants to America, so you can be proud of that. They provided for their families as boat builders and fishermen. They had their own boatyard in North Plymouth. The Jesse boat building business survives to this day. They all lived on Castle Street in North Plymouth, Ma. They have many descendants who are still strongly populated in the eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island area and many of the cousins are very strongly connected. Our wing of the Jesse family (Antone's descendants) ave a family reunion every year in August at a campground in New Hampshire. My mother has told me her grandfather and grandmother (Frank's parents) were John and Mary (Jesse) that they came to North Plymouth in the late 1800s, around 1880 or 1890 from some kind of vessel by way of Bermuda. It is confirmed they came from Azores (San Miguel) but before that Portugal and even before that from France (the name Jacinth has French roots) but we have not been able to trace that far back. They are all buried in Vine Hills cemetery in Plymouth, Ma. There are many Jesse graves there, that I have visited and examined myself. A distant relative from Plymouth has given me a database and photos he was working on of the early family tree. I have been combining this with the verbal recordings and our own family photos. I would be glad to send everything I have to you if you provide me with an email address (privately). There is also a wealth of information in this blog posting that I did not have which I will pencil in concerning the Azores connections and locations. The pre-Plymouth history has always been a great mystery to us Jesse descendants. Our parents simply do not know, and the 1st and 2nd generations have all long since passed and kept no records. So it's up to us children to piece it all together! I have attached a photo of the four brothers, which I am told was taken on my grandfather's wedding day in Fall River, MA, sometime in the 1930s. Frank is the one with the dark moustache. They also called him Blackie Jesse. On Wednesday, March 4, 2009 5:56:26 PM UTC-6, Aztec wrote: I am new to this group so please be patient.
