Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Is there a trick to searching the Portuguese Newspaper Collection at UMass website?

2015-07-16 Thread IslandRoutes
Hi Sonia,
Yes, it was me who posed the initial question. You might have missed my
follow up post. I don't use the browser buttons when in the database. I
use the controls in the top menu.

Yesterday, I did a test using both Firefox and Chrome. What I found was
there was a long delay after viewing my first page and selecting my second
page. What is happening is when I click that second page to view, I still
get the first one that I viewed. Then several seconds after the new page
will render.

In one case, I left the page open and then about two minutes later the page
that I wanted to see replace the first page I had viewed.

Perhaps the problem is on my end because I have slower DSL. I'm not sure.
This never used to happen and that about 3-4 months ago it began.

Thanks again for you help,
Mel

Bill,
Okay...I don't use the browser buttons.  I know about the page 1-25 button and
I use the Show previews/Show Document toggle.

I believe there is some sort of delay going on.  Because I am having the same
problem.
I click on a document
I view the PDF
I toggle back to the previews
I click on another document
I get the exact same PDF file that I viewed the first time.

The only thing I can think of is there is some sort of delay.  Because if I
just leave it alone, wait a couple minutes and then go view another page, I
finally get the new PDF.  And, if I just leave the screen on the new PDF that I
wanted to view, after awhile it just appears.

A cache isn't clearing in between views and it is holding that old image.

That is what I think is going on anyway.

Thanks for your help!

You're welcome!
OK, I configured Chrome back to normal (I had disabled the built-in PDF viewer
in favor of downloading and viewing in Acrobat).  Browsers are going through a
transition period where old plug-ins and Active-X will no longer be supported.
Going to different search result pages (as indicated below) can work, but only
if you have multiple pages (more than 25 search results).
In playing with both Chrome and Firefox and the built-in viewers, the same
option worked.  After viewing a resulting PDF, click on the "Show Previews"
button.  It will then toggle to "Show Document" and the search results are
displayed.  It is a toggle.  Also, if you want to look at a previously viewed
PDF, select the "PDFs" option to scroll through or select a previously viewed
PDF.
See the attached picture for the highlighted options.
Good luck,
Bill

Melody, I tried it and got server error when I tried to go back to the results.
Usually you can go back and the results show up again.

I can't go back to my main list of search results either (using Firefox).
Maybe Sonia Pacheco at UMass will answer, but it's after 5 pm there.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Is there a trick to searching the Portuguese Newspaper Collection at UMass website?

2015-07-13 Thread IslandRoutes
This is the database I'm referring to:
http://lib.umassd.edu/PAA/portuguese-american-digital-newspaper-collections

Every time I search the database I can only do one search and look at one
page. I go back to the result list and it won't open a new page for me.
It always opens the first page that I touch.

I end up having to exit the whole website. Then, go back in and do the
same search again.

Is there a trick or something I am overlooking? It happens on Firefox and
Chrome

Thanks!
