This is a story about the BBC News Online website.

I read this story:

I saw that I had been invited to Digg it (and Facebook it etc)

So, I did. Well, as least as far as http://del.icio.us/gordo

And I thought the tags were very precise:

Re: [backstage] RSS feeds query

2007-08-20 Thread Iain Emsley
It was mainly programme data that I was after and any news/publicity stuff that
the BBC has on the show (such as renewals and so on). I realise its a slightly
different case that say Dr Who which you own so have a richer feed for. Also
(runs for cover with tin helmet) any links to watch it again type thing in the
feed (again if these exist).

Also is there an image repository or a department to contact to get
images/logos to use o a page (with the obvious mention of any pages not being
official and copyright notices).

I'm just having a play with a few things to get a feel for a small project that
I want to run on my own site.

Thanks for the other link, Carlos, I'll hook up to the feed tomorrow. More
episode information would be good though.

Ian, I'll probably have a better idea once I know what's on offer and what I
can do with it.

Iain

A quick query. Will the BBC be producing any feeds for the Heroes website at
all or BBC Three? Since the demise of the cult site, I'm trying to get the
various bits of information together in RSS form as a bit of an experiment.

Thanks,

[backstage] Inside the BBC News site

2007-08-20 Thread Gary Kirk
I am very interested in how news.bbc.co.uk runs, in terms of it's
backend and design. I assume it is a bespoke site designed and adapted
internally for the needs of the Beeb. Is there anyone I could talk to
- I'd like explanations (eg of what the URL constructions mean, as
they don't seem to be date-based). Is there any way the software
running the site could be made available to download? I'm sure many
would love to experiment :)

Re: [backstage] PVR Fragmentation

2007-08-20 Thread Dogsbody

With all the recording, deleting, pause functionality today’s PVRs have,
and the large volume of data I’d imagine its shifting around, doesn’t
the hard disk get really fragmented? Does the software deal with this,
or does it not bother because streaming the content off the disk even
when its fragmented not a very intensive task?

FWIW, TiVo uses a different and specifically designed filesystem that
has very large data blocks (compared to a home computer). This means
that programs are written across relatively few data blocks (a 30 min
program uses around 4 blocks) and fragmentation isn't really an issue as
it is with home machines.

RE: [backstage] RSS feeds query

2007-08-20 Thread Ian Forrester
There's no doubt that a rss feed for logical queries like
/worldservice/news/caribbean/weather/ would make a lot of sense but as Jason
was highlighting, different parts of the BBC are at different stages and any
pan BBC project to unite all would be troublesome at best. If you also times in
the fact most people still don't fully get RSS any work in this area would be
low on the priority list.

Now that's the negative side out the way.

Things will get better, our bbc 2.0 project will bring the cms's closer
together or at least form a layer in between so it won't matter. Also the use
of RSS is growing and with stuff like igoogle, particls, etc. We're seeing lots
more use of RSS without it being asked for by name. RSS is becoming part of the
fabric of the web.

And I just want to add RSS on a mobile phone with unlimited (1gig limit) is
awesome.

However, just picking one page at random, http://www.bbc.co.uk/1xtra/ -
this has no feed but seems to comprise of a number of stories. My assumption
is that you are using a CMS to do this - it wouldn't reduce the number of

As a big Drum and Bass fan then I would like a feed from

That would be useful if you wanted a log of when a page has

I think the idea of using xhtml with lots of Microformats or rdf/a makes better

Yeah, but if you use iGoogle or similar to monitor sites, they are
invisible without the RSS feeds!

For example, I had no idea when the Guardian changed their "home page"
design, because I never look at it - I use the RSS feeds from the sections I
want (Media, Technology) so I can avoid the stuff I don't want (Sport etc).

Also, RSS is very easy for search engines to index, and you don't get
onto the "add stuff" buttons of iGoogle without an RSS feed. Type in "drum and
bass" for example and there's no 1Xtra (sorry, BBC Radio 1Xtra).

Others may disagree, but I'm interested in why

The main reason I use iGoogle is that I have six or seven PCs that I
use over the days - a few servers, PCs in different offices, laptops etc -
iGoogle allows me to keep my stuff in one place and access it as I require.

2007-08-20 Thread Jason Cartwright
There are some screenscraping websites that will log changes to links in
pages. These could be modified to disregard links that are part of the BBC
page furniture, I suppose. Betsie does this, kind of, to a degree...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/betsie/ (Warning: very, very old page)

Of course, getting the content in state whereby it could be outputted to
different formats is the place to start. This is happening, slowly.

RE: [backstage] RSS feeds query

2007-08-20 Thread Dylan Dawes
I've worked on a number of BBC sites in a content capacity and I have to
say the number of times just the sites I've worked on have re-published
large numbers of pages (or elements of pages) with just micro-changes
(sometimes not even visible ones, ie meta-data) is immense.
So I would question whether a feed of all pages that have recently
changed would be of much value, other than for statistical purposes.

Unless you introduce ways of splicing or specifying within the dataset
of course; then you could focus on areas that might get results that
would of use.

A quick query. Will the BBC be producing any
feeds for the Heroes website at all or BBC Three? Since the demise of the cult
site, I'm trying to get the various bits of information together in RSS form as
a bit of an experiment.

Thanks,

Hahahaha.

You do know that a very large proportion of pages from bbc.co.uk (rather
than news.bbc.co.uk) are published by hand, right?

2007-08-20 Thread Darren Stephens
Yes, I too have certainly not downloaded this.

I do rememberiLincolnshire Poacher and even Swedish Rhapsody when I was
a kid, and finding them not so much freaky as stangely interesting. I
spent hours looking for that kind of thing. But then I used to find
stations other stations floating around like "Radio Sweden International
" pretty freaky, with announcers who had this weird, disconnected, ind
of flat-sounding way of speaking english. RSI had this really creepy
sounding jingle that was a bit like suicide music to be honest. Ah,
bonjour tristesse!

Creepy yeah, but I saved "scared witless" for the time when the water got
into the Air Attack Warning system once at 5am and I woke to think that the
world was going to end before I woke up...

RE: [backstage] Russia forces World Service off FM radio

2007-08-20 Thread Christopher Woods
I saw a YouTube video where a guy shows how to tune into one (using a Sony
radio which allowed you to tune to non-standard sidebands to pick the
stations up), and it had some audio... I did a lot of reading about the
Russian Woodpecker and Numbers Stations last year after one of my uni
lecturers said he was working on an MoD site in the part of the UK which the
Woodpecker was aimed it (somewhere in Anglia I think it was), and it caused
seizures in a small percentage of the local population! That's a bit
worrying...

... Though different sources say the Woodpecker was for different things -
over the horizon radar, signal jamming, or other nefarious electronic
warfare. I did find it funny that the Russians shut down their system just
after the Americans set up their own one to retaliate after being bombarded
with Russian signals for years :D Feel even sorrier for the Russians living
in the locality of the transmitters whose reception of nearly everything was
regularly disrupted!
